I like the above discussion and think that Katana's proposal is not only modest (no overt nonsense at least) and reasonable, but probably inevitable and here's why: I couldn't say if Dean Hall and his team conceptualize it this way, but I consider the whole architecture redesign to symbolize an attempt to add the fourth dimension into the game. The 4th dimension is time. Some games feature aesthetic notions of time but most games don't deal with time in a real way at all. And when we talk about baseball bats degrading from zombie bashing or a player dressing a bandage quickly because it is the fiftieth time he/she's done it, we are simply speaking of a time mechanic. Most things fall under actions that belong in the realm of the x,y and z axis. But there's a whole subset of programmable experience with the time axis. So we see the harder notion already implemented in the SA. Inanimate objects have their own life: usefulness degrades over time and in some cases can be repaired to restore maximum usefulness. Well that's a compelling concept in a game! Seems the more mundane possibility is the developer thinks about time and the player first. (One could say of course that is true with DayZ, the whole game might be about a person and time.) How well would I reload some random gun on the first day I experience a zombie apocalypse? Not well. How well would I reload a gun after 100 dayz? Probably a ton better. Makes sense to me. Especially if the experienced gained is lost upon player death. Reminds me of when I used to frequent the lonely towns of Chernarus to shoot zombies just for the practice.

I think the question uses the term dlc loosely. They mean some sort of new content. I see instead Dean taking the opportunity to make a firm statement about all fracturing of the community, which includes mods of mods and pay for play stuff (donater perks?). Point is, so much more fun when we all play the same exact game. Notoriety, public shame, stats exceptionalism, all that stuff.

Too bad the entire map won't be available initially, oh well, still kick ass though because "tidying things up and hiding parts of the map that aren't yet functional" is the clearest sign of "habbening imminence". Latest screen shots really show off the beauty of the new engine. I think that will be the big surprise. I can't say I'm not a little incensed by the negativity (know it is inevitable) but after the last few pages here I'm really wishing there was a method to restrict players. If you ain't grateful for all the fun you had in the mod, if you can't prove you're a true believer, I'm at the point right now where I feel like these folks should be prevented from ever purchasing the game. Sorry to get swol, but where's the gratitude folks? Okay, I'm over it. You may now return to your endlessly pointless semantic arguments about what is an "alpha" "beta". . .

Awesome news! So happy for you guys. Having once developed a retail business, I know how gratifying it is to open for business on that first day, despite the mountain of challenges still to be met. Once again, so glad you decided to take this route of creating a whole new infrastructure. Really excited for the long term possibilities this opens up. Can't wait to get in there and start identifying bugs, but more so excited to get my hands on some of the new mechanics so I can take part in the refinement process i.e. tweaks, improvements, changes.

My point as well. There was a suggestion to ban LeeHarvey from the forums. As you said, Rista, these are all Arma mods with their own rules. But not rules that constitute the breaking of some Bohemia Interactive holy law. However DayZ as its own mod, does have some rules that are applied almost across the board, such as scripting. Scripting is explicitly not allowed. If LeeHarvey admitted on these forums to scripting, then yes, ban him from the game and yes, maybe ban him from the forums. But he posted a bandit story within the bandit campfire section of the forums. I don't agree with his actions. I wouldn't go into a server to break their rules. I think he made a dick move, but not an illegal one. He broke a rule without circumventing the core code. If for instance, this non-pvp server in question had changed its code so that bullets fired from a gun had zero effect on other players and he scripted a cheat to break that code, then we might have another discussion. But I'm assuming this is a non-whitelist server that relies on the good intentions of all players, so they assume the responsibility of policing their server pop. Yes, he broke a private Arma mod server rule. That is between him and that server. If he wants to share his "bandit-minded ethos" in the bandit section of the forums, more power to him. -

Excellent point and thanks for bringing this up! I remember clearly last year some discussions about admin tools and the admins quite strongly claiming they had very little power when it comes to tools. Recently a friend purchased a server and gave me admin rights. Holy cow, one can do everything! Did admin tools change since last year? If conditions remain the same, then I am completely one sided on this. No private player should ever, ever be allowed to own a server and have admin rights if he/she expects said server to be connected to the public hive. I truly hope BIS maintains all public servers. I am positive there are some honest server admins, but they have godlike powers and the temptation is too great.

And . . . To be a little controversial and play devil's advocate. I want to make an argument in favor of Lee's act. This isn't to say I believe this but simply to add some more ideas here. I would make a distinction between server rules that are explicit within the original design of DayZ and what I will call "aftermarket" rules. DayZ was designed with pvp as an essential element. Things like not scripting, or not using racial epithets in side chat, are explicit rules that have existed from day one as well. These are rules that will get you banned from every server. No-pvp is an aftermarket rule that is, at least in my opinion, completely contrary to the vision and design of DayZ. And when a server owner attempts to institute rules that are contrary to pure DayZ, they should expect that folks will disregard those rules. In a simple way, if it was proven that LeeHarvey was spewing racism in any server, he would rightly deserve a ban. But he broke a special rule applied only to select servers and he wouldn't rightly deserve a global ban for that. Imagine if one knew absolutely nothing about DayZ. If I told that person, "no pvp!", that would seem as completely arbitrary as if I told that person, "no hatchets!". The only reason we, as players, even have any feelings towards this is because it contains context for us. But what if LeeHarvey told a story about logging onto my server where I have a rule that says, "No hatchets". And then he relates that he went to some far off barn and picked up a hatchet just to spite me and my server rules. Would any of you really give a shit? I don't think so. The reason why is because he broke an extra rule that I decided to dictate that is expressly contrary to the original design of DayZ. -

Morning everyone! I would never condone breaking server rules. However I recognize I am reading a tale written by a forumer named LeeHarveyEnfield, which informs me much and I take it with many grains of salt. There's no way to know if he really did the deed or not. My interpretation is that this is mostly or all fabricated. More of a satire, a literary way to express his dissatisfaction with carebear types. A dedicated bandit worms his way into their little heaven and brings chaos to say, "Nowhere is safe you carebears!" Next, he posted a bandit story in the bandit campfire section. I'd say his story is most appropriate for that. One expects to read about dastardly acts. And as a result, that bandit should expect some rage back at him for his dastardly acts. As KoS says, this is philosophy of DayZ; it is the eternal fight. So long as forum rules are followed. I say let LeeHarvey triumph in his dickishness and let Raymond rage back at him. Once again, so as not to get any warning points myself, A NICE ARGUMENT ABOUT STUFF IS WONDERFUL SO LONG AS FORUM RULES ARE OBSERVED. -

I'd go for this. There's definitely a click whirr thing that happens with locked "treasure chests". Is it Skyrim that has that fun little pick lock mechanic to open chests? Definite sense of gratification when one opens one of those. In fact, what a great way to tier the loot. Not only does one need to be at the right place for a certain item, but they might need certain tools as well-adding some nice depth to looting.

Awesome idea, but maybe an idea to implement a couple years from now? With a new map, I suppose they could code buildings in a way that they are treated like the reworked inventory. So buildings are no longer part of the map, but spawned in at server start allowing them to have the flexibility like with SA clothing, etc. where they can degrade and all that. This would allow the server to quickly respawn the buildings so that folks couldn't burn the whole map down. Thinking about Lord of Flies (and dreaming big here), how awesome would it be to take advantage of strong winds to start a massive forest fire to either kill or flush out an individual or group. Also, considering the relative lushness of Eastern Europe, I would want this to be difficult. Wet, rotting wood doesn't necessarily ignite. It might simply be too wet to accomplish this. -
Werd. Imagine yourself in this situation in real life. Are you gonna build an entirely new cabin or fortify an existing building? Surely the latter. Katana, I'm fairly sure there is a door on that hut in screenshot Aporis shared. Look closely you can see the door casts a shadow behind it on the wall :)

I'm not a huge supporter of base building, although think there is something that could be done. I'd like first to see as much done as possible within the sphere of camouflage and hiding. I may own a vehicle on a server and let's say, for example, I go on a business trip for two weeks (irl). Well that's great for me to know my car is totally secure that whole time I'm away but I still feel like I'm robbing the server and the players on that server of an important playable item. I see this problem on well worn Epoch servers. If you are new to one of these Epoch servers, one can find it unnaturally frustrating because one is locked out of a great many normal buildings with valuable loot because folks have boarded them all up. And it's not like they out competed you. They simply started playing that server before you did. Your best option is to start on a relatively empty server where that hasn't happened yet. But then you're all by yourself on this empty server, hoping it will eventually attract a player base. Also, if you allow a mechanic that easily counters a locked building, then you sorta negate the whole premise. One decides it is better to well hide items as opposed to storing them in a building that is relatively easy to break into. Unless it is Dubrovka, lol, no one goes there . . . so it is like locking it in a building and hiding it at the same time! lol I don't mind if my base get raped every once in awhile, but not every 3 hours like in a hive server. I don't mind if someone steals my well hidden heli after a few days, but not literally 20 minutes after I log off. Anyway, I think we should see what a lack of scripting, no duping and an expanded map do to mitigate this before we start seriously considering base building. I suspect the issue might not be as significant as it seems.

Awesome, I've been thinking much along these same lines lately. Here was my thinking-Remember those VR helmets from back in the day ('80s&'90s)? What a joke, right? Now if you'd asked me a few years ago if we'd ever see another I'd say very unlikely. But now we have this Occulus Rift. Also, I'm intrigued by Smellovision from the '50s. For those that don't know, essentially certain smells release into the theater that correspond with the scene and the purpose is to enhance the experience. I wish I could have been alive to experience this for myself to know if there might have been any potential with it. I'm guessing the reason it never became ubiquitous is because it was never implemented properly. Imagine a sort of counterpart to a hypothetical Occulus Rift, however instead of providing visual information to the eyes, this device sits comfortably over your mouth and nostrils and provides temperature and olfactory information. With changing the temperature of incoming air, a device could perfectly simulate elevation change. For instance, one would feel the true effect of sitting on top of Black Mountain. The air reaching you mouth and nose would be cold, dry and thin. A device might be able to adjust CO2 and oxygen levels to simulate elevation change. Imagine catching the slightest wiff of decaying flesh. The device can simulate air currents so you even locate the direction. As you approach the body, the scent becomes stronger until you're beside the body and the smell is almost too much to take. You loot that body quickly and back off.

When Dean says he "doesn't care about the numbers", I think he's speaking about work philosophy generally. Being solely focused in a goal oriented way often leads one astray, as opposed to being process oriented. As an analogy, a sports professional doesn't focus solely on a championship. Instead they focus on the process, the steps by which you create a foundation to achieve a championship. One can become absolutely sick listening to the endless cliches from pro sports interviews- "taking it one game at a time" "I just went out there and focused on making good pitches" "I've been trying to simplify my approach and focus more on swinging at strikes and watching balls" (sorry for all baseball examples, but you get the idea). Pro sports teams know that one can't simply desire to be #1, one must focus on the right steps to get there and put the ultimate goal out of one's head and trust that it'll happen if one is focused on all the little things to get there. The ultimate goal is to make money. After all, BIS and Rocket are making a product. Products are for sale. And sold so that the owner receives a profit. The ultimate goal is money. But if that was kept as their guide post the game would be shit. I can think of no better example of this than that game that shall not be mentioned. Those folks were solely focused on end goal: money. Sure they made a little money, but because Dean and his team are focused on process, instead of outcome, they will make a superior game and will make a ton more money.

I love fixing up vehicles. It's one activity in DayZ that has a clear finish line, a definite sense of achievement. It provides a reason to go looting, get into harm's way, that's not about just looking for a guy to kill. However, I do agree with the problems that vehicles present. Fixing up the vehicle is more fun to me than using it. To your point, it's all about rarity. Getting a vehicle or even seeing a vehicle pass by should be an "event". I'm glad the dev team is waiting to implement, starting from the ground up instead of porting over from the mod. So much stuff to rework.
