    Rolling Update Rev - 0.43.116251

I turn away from the computer for a few hours to cook some tactical bacon and look what I come back to find . . mutha fucking tactical bacon! and shitloads of even more new stuff checkmate
  2. In my sordid travels of this forum, I came across a post of a guy who said he and his brother played simultaneously while in the same room. Thus they could communicate and, in fact, see each other's screens. So, yeah, meta is no easy answer. HOWEVER, OP's suggestion has merit because maybe 80% of players are too lazy/stupid to work a bypass. I could work a bypass, but I'm too lazy. Good suggestion.

    People who server hop

I appreciate OP's motivation on this. It never hurts to bring up this issue. And to hear someone express well what I feel is the point of DayZ. Which is that sense of accomplishment after you've found something through hard work not through server hopping. But adding to the chorus, been discussed more than thoroughly. I think a good road map is in place and the fundamentals are sound. We're all just waiting for the complete set to be implemented. For instance, if you fail to log correctly on a server and then immediately try again to log on that same server often times the player receives a harsh penalty by way of current anti-hopping programming. BIS/Hall/whoever knows that is an instance in which a correction needs to occur and they are currently working on it, so far as my sleuthing has gathered. Point is, there is like 200 of aforementioned tweaks that need to get done and it'll just take time. Once storage and respawning loot arrives, any "rule" or idea you have about DayZ goes out the window. As a byproduct of this, server hopping becomes pointless. (almost)
  4. You know you'r playing too much DayZ when . . . you wanna get a girl's number but you ask for her IP address you buy a can of Heinz Baked Beans to see what they actually taste like (US only) feel like Anakin should have combat logged at the end of Episode 3 because it's more accurate for the character a $1000 pc is totally justifiable you're driving around town, see an vacant lot and think, "Hurry up, Ivan." noobs think you're some sort of God when it comes to spotting other players you volunteer the disinfectant for your captors because they're taking too damn long, "hurry up, you shitty bandits." you can discourse at length the difference between a noob and a bambi you no longer even bother to direct chat with the other guy suiciding with you on the water tower at Solnichny you know exactly the farthest spawn point which will get you within 10 minutes of Elektro you know which in-game books have missing text and which don't whenever a coworker is having a shitty day you say, "welcome to dayz" (this one I actually do)

    How to Handle Large Objects

An idea to add more realism but also more flexibility to inventory storage and movement. Folks already wondering about the engine block fits in a backpack problem in regard to vehicles/parts in SA. Similar to the concept that every item is defined by a required number of slots to store, every object also might be defined by the minimum and maximum number of players that can simultaneously hold in hand. I could foresee, for example, certain car parts that could be carried by one individual with both hands with some difficulty but also carried by two individuals much more easily. So sharing the work means the player walks faster, expends less energy and has potentially a free hand for a pistol. Certain items like an engine block might require a minimum of 6 hands (3 players all lifting) to carry said object. All this is countered by wheeled carts, wheelbarrows, kid wagons like radio flyer, etc. How bout human and horse powered wheeled carts. These are options for lone players who need some way to transport large items that won't fit in a backpack or in some cases are simply too heavy to carry. Further example on this idea. Dean showed in a vid the beginnings of storage with refrigerator. Well what if you desired to relocate that fridge from let's say one house to another one in town? Well you'd have to drag that thing over there. You couldn't put that in your backpack. So in this case a large refrigerator might require a minimum of four hands and a max of eight. Now players have almost irl options for transport. Two players could carry using all their hands. They might walk slowly. Or four players could carry with only hand so all four can remained armed in free hand. They might walk almost full speed. Another combo is four players carrying with all their hands. A refrigerator being carried in this last way would allow players to walk at full speed. I think it would be neat if somehow the left and right hand were separated, from a functionality standpoint, so that multiple players can carry a large item while having a free hand. The idea came to me from an image I had of two survivors carrying, one on each side, an Igloo brand cooler full of meat and soda while brandishing pistols in their free hands. I also thought this could work well if craftable stretcher/gurneys get done. Stretcher=3 shirts, duct tape, sewing kit and wood? But then we come back to the question of how exactly do players carry the stretcher. Once again, this is a minimum of four hands and a max of four hands. However 2, 3 and 4 people can carry a stretcher. 2 people using all their hands. 3 people where one player uses both hands and two players use one hand. And finally four players all using one hand so that pistol, etc. can be equipped in free hand.

    Is this game getting worse?

Werd, don't sprint in buildings. Not too say it is a cure all, but certainly a big factor with broken legs. Definitely feel like we're in a holding pattern right now. No big deal. Not surprised there are issues considering the amount of stuff they are trying to push through. It's only been two months since release, with a significant holiday mixed in as well. Also, this is the slow part of the season for pretty much all business. I'm excited for summer when all this stuff gets sorted out. I think what we see is pretty typical and nothing to worry about.
  7. You know you're playing too much DayZ when. . . you get sleepy you look around for a tree so you can "log off" someone sneaks up behind you and you scream, "oh shit, hacker!" you're taking your dog for a walk around the neighborhood and you spot another person walking and you turn to your dog and shoutwhisper "Player!Player!Player" you get angry that real life is a first person only server you think you can fly a helicopter your right hand checks for something in your pocket and your left hand instinctively reaches out to press TAB to check inventory you wont take any stairs or climb any ladders, ever! "you wanna download my latest patch?" is an awesome pickup line

    Is this game getting worse?

Comedian takes the mic and says, "So . . . I just came from some stairs in NEAF and boy are my legs broken . ." Only two things in this world I'm scared of. First is Eastern Europeans at Riffy and second is any stairs at NEAF.

In-Game Books: What are you reading?

[post=http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Books] Heavier in the 19th,18th century it seems. Would like to see more Shakespeare. Still looking for Hamlet. That's a keeper. I have a few players potentially interested in doing a Shakespeare in Elektro youtube type thing. So more plays, maybe even screenplays. I'm hoping for lower word count items. I picked up Origins of Species awhile back and gave it a shot. But what a task! Not sure what's wrong with me but I'm far more interested in the administration and accounting functionality of DayZ versus anything weapons or hunting, lol. Must mention my hope for pocket protectors so pens and their kind are removed from traditional inventory and allowing for variety and quantity. Also binders so we can hold multiple papers in one inventory slot. Finally, I wish the cursor could act as a pen during "write note" so that we could draw stuff. Maps, genitalia, ya know everyday DayZ stuff.

In-Game Books: What are you reading?

Awesome to see other folks down with the books. I think it is a great test concept for in game entertainment. There is just so much downtime in squad play. I usually carry at least one book around for when I'm waiting for someone, etc. Add book to hotbar. Equip it. Then press tab (pretty sure). Needs a bookmark or "goto page __" mechanic, too. I'll be reading and then I'll hear something. I want to esc out of book to look around but that's a pain if you're 20+ pages into a book.
  11. First some backstory: I just typed this opus and after it wouldn't load I realized that while I was typing away the thread itself devolved and was locked. Which I am totally in agreement with. However Lok responded at one point in the thread and what he said struck me and truly impassioned me. The thread was certainly DOA but he touched on something and I felt compelled to respond at length. The original thread no longer matters and the last bit is my "f you" to the OP which is prolly better that thread was locked before it was posted but I left it in because I feel it is compelling and not too obscene, more a proclamation of my beliefs by way of retort. Thankfully I copied my rant before pressing "pos"t so I could paste it in a new thread, oh yeah! So below is Lok's post and my hypothetical reply. To summarize the post I'm doing this because there is clearly an immediate need and reality is Dean leaves in a year and I love this game and know that it needs a "face" or a "guide" or something of that nature that the player base can count on. More clearly, my suggestion is something more mechanistic, like for instance an auto post on the forums every single day if even just to say, "There is absolutely nothing of consequence to report today." Just so the community can feel that if info was available, they can rest assured they didn't miss it. Random twitters about fundamental stuff, some letsplay with Sacriel sort of suggested as a regular thing but I haven't heard anymore, maybe I missed that or didn't, who fucking knows, hopefully you catch my drift about maybe it's not so good that a DayZ player needs be a veritable sleuth to find out all the latest info . . . so sorry to be so caustic, you know I love you guys! Lok's reply to OP (again, thread was locked and I'm not interested in rehashing the thread, but simply changing it to a community plea for Rocket to reconsider his stance on "Community Management" and my general argument for why this should be) OMG, READ LAST SENTENCE OR DON'T RESPOND TO POST, PLEASE! Hello there Ill have to pull you up on that. Give us proof when you make statements like this. I too agree the mere yell of ALPHA! and (rabid fanboi-ism) is not enough in many arguments and discussions, but on the flip side nor is being a "hater" and making mountains out of molehills. I dont see where you get the snails pace of development. Compared to many games the development is very speedy. My only real gripe is the devs lack of regular communication that feeds visibly through all forms of communication. That is one area which could be IMHO improved. I dont have a solution to that though so dont make a song and dance about it. Keeping it real is a good ideal but its a blade that cuts both ways. Rgds LoK My aborted reply """Hey Lok, I can't help but earnestly reply. Especially since another mod expressed a similar thought just recently on another thread (sorry memory and skill fail me in the department of citation, maybe boneboys?) I know Dean's got a theory about community relations and "third party dissemination/dilution" problem. But I highly suggest you guys attempt a serious change in his mind about this. I love how Dean goes about things. Because I know he tries to follow from first principles to good decisions. 90% of the time this way leads him on a right path. Everything I know tells me he's a reasonable guy and he knows no single person is correct 100% of the time. It's not that his decision making is bad but that he needs to step back and check some of his premises (Randian I know, forgive me, unintentional) So one must simply convince him that excellent community relations isn't "against" or "a hindrance to DayZ" but in fact more deserving to DayZ than any other game that's ever come before. Dean's got a problem with community relations. And he's right! But not because it is a bad idea, but because no one has done it correctly yet. I agree with the desire for a "real dialogue", but that isn't just about one person or even two! There's many of us and . . . oh my regnal papa, forgive my heresy, but we are perfectly happy to have a conversation about DayZ in which Dean isn't present, genuflecting, so sorry, lol. As a too long life-long gamer, I never miss the opportunity to say how MUCH DayZ does right. So if DayZ can do so many things right, why haven't we the collective balls and temerity to think that we could also finally do community relations right as well? As a finished product, DayZ goes live in about 9 months or so, right? Coincidentally, that is also the approximate time Dean will be leaving Bohemia to do other cool shit, right? Obviously some decisions need to be made at some point; you can't argue with that, can you? SA is creeping up on 2 million sales. Wow, right? But not really when you consider the potential. All the forumers who wonder about the butt load of cash this baby has racked in so far and suspect that not all of those dollar resources aren't currently committed to development must consider that a forthcoming Full Release ad campaign is wise and necessary. Funds must be allocated for this. There is nothing wrong with 8 million sign ups and 2-3 million regular users. If GTA is a guidepost, then more dollars always means a better game. The only caveat here is that the developer has to supply the cajones to deliver. I'm tldr'ing as the kids say . . But so important this observation that although OP is certainly making a dance and creating a mountain out of a molehill, there is some faint, blinking light that OP exposes that compelled you to respond. You even conceded that. That there is "improvement to be had" when it comes to community management. In summation, I'm attempting three things here. 1. As the "typical fan", I agree with you. Improvements would be great! 2. Don't get discouraged and cop out with, "I don't have an answer". It ain't rocket science and you a cool dude, prolly smarter than most rocket scientist so I say, "Have at!" Let's get a proper media presence for DayZ already. 3. I'm writing a response directly to Lok but purposefully not a PM because I'm always attempting to generate some "pull" for where this game might be going. And always trying to find something positive and actionable out of even the shittiest of threads, lol. Because, even though OP's general thoughts are a disgust to my whole being, he does have a point. Above for Lok. Now for OP! I found some subtext in your spew that I thought was worthwhile, but your text was superficially about me! You are complaining about fanboys! Well you got one right here, homie. Here's my deal: You complain that I only praise every last tidbit. That ain't true. And that's why I took the opportunity to lay down one of my "complaints" in your thread. Just to show you that the most ardent fans have a shit tone of gripes. More than you! I can rattle off 100+ improvements I'd like to see. So yeah, I can say that dashboard is corny as fuck, but I still appreciate a Lambo when I see one!""""" So that's my peace on that. I loved the sort of "small business" cuteness of the last few years but know there is a reality where this would all be better if it assumed a more "professional" atmosphere. (using those terms loosely, don't kill me on that) I was sort of expecting at this point things like officially organized SurviverGameZ and such. I know that is a bit much to ask, but I'm hoping to generate some consensus among the more sophisticated forumers here who might go, "Exactly, great position." Just that this thing is bigger than Dean Hall and bigger than all of us, and thus requires some bigger thinking, and let's not be afraid to think big.

    Territory Control

Fire that pilot then, lol. I mean I can fly, but many dudes can really fly. This is why your clan must be the shit to pull this off. I never will. My shit ain't that good. This is why DayZ is compelling. Some people do stuff others can't. I'll never be the clan throwing the leaflet out the window of the heli, but I'll probably be the random survivor to read it and expend the time to run to Berezino for what is sure to be an interesting happening.
  13. PhilB

    Territory Control

I'm such a loser. I continue to turn on my walkie, call out in direct, and cycle through those channels, in every big town I'm in. I must believe, lol. The potential is so huge on all this. Long term I want to see super-parallelized multiservers that support a single "map" of 10x the size of Chernarus with 500 players concurrent. That way you and yo dudes control some legitimate territory within a vast world that encourages long term game play versus the fleeting enjoyment of random skirmishes that the game currently offers.

In-Game Books: What are you reading?

Also, totally cool with the fact that right now the "books" are cut and paste jobs from third party open source projects. But they contain certain coding errors which result in missing sentences and paragraphs and all sorts of meaningless symbols for instance question marks mixed sporadically and meaninglessly. Long term, would be great element to game to hail a certain sophistication with a refined and edited text for each book. Oh, some books seem broken and/or devoid of any actual text. Anyway, books are the shit. We will be quoting that shit while we execute people on the coast, fer sure.
  15. PhilB

In-Game Books: What are you reading?

I read first part of "The Coming Race". Was actually really good, anyone find this book in game give it a shot. I bet you'll be prone for a few hours reading it. Also read significant portions of Darwin's "On the Origins of Species". I created my own Steam Achievement. I'm gonna read e'ry last one of dos fuckers.
  16. Those are troubling. When I think about all the combinations of substandard pc's and substandard internet connections, working in the feedback loop that is DayZ? Who fucking knows? I do know this. Hackers always "made" themselves in the mod. They would either gloat or be overly conspicuous or be overly defensive, what have you. They had tells. My experience so far has been lag related. I'm super sensitive to cheaters (I fucking hate them!). But I haven't seen any, woot!@whocares@oblivious@what'sat?@hashtagswhatsthat@IknowahackerwhenIseeone,DayZdeservessomeloveonthis@at
  17. PhilB

    Territory Control

This will happen, don't worry. You don't see it yet. These shenanigans are only credible when done contextually, with in game assets. Otherwise they feel forced and artificial. So imagine this: You're in a clan. You guys are the shit; you're powerful. You guys take over Berezino. You have a heli. Inside the heli are players with binders (not yet) full of papers (already implemented) advertising your takeover and a challenge to any rival gang to come and fight. The heli flies over the usual areas and these dudes drop these leaflets. In addition, you've got clan mates strategically placed around the map broadcasting the news on the walkies. My point is you don't need a bunch of realism breaking meta stuff going on to make this thing really shine. I gave you beans for your stellar profile pic!
  18. I've conceded on this issue. It's a done deal. Only question is what's next. I can only hope that there is some notion of "Public" hive that holds that charm of notoriety and equanimity of stats. Meaning, "Holy shit, his 14 bandit kills and 28 day lifespan is impressive because I've played and understand the conditions under which he achieved that!" In the mod, our public hive character always held a special place in our hearts, let us not lose that.

    Tell us why we died

Werd to your wonderment about, "what killed me?" I think this is more to do with coming improvements to gameplay. My friend died to shotgun blast two nights ago. I heard it and saw it. But from his perspective he went from all good to "you are dead" black screen instantly. Because of lag or whatever, he was mystified. Thankfully for him I could fill him in on what happened. The point here is that we should make sure that all possible forms of death have a contextual and performance repeatable meaning to them. For example, you chose to walk off a cliff, you didn't lag off one. You chose to walk into the crossfire, you didn't lag into it. on and on but they'll figure it out, don't worry.
  20. And also maybe a little grist to get the mind thinking about this part of DayZ for the long term. I wonder, do you think it inappropriate to "talk shop" in the forums? I would argue that I represent two people here. One person is Phil Baggers the player character as whom I post. The other is the anonymous irl person who bought the game. They each have their own rubric by which they judge the game. This is huge to me, this thought. In part because no online game before this got me thinking about such things. Anyone else interested in this sort of madness? Anyway, I feel compelled to intermix the two perspectives at will in post format as I feel it represents a fuller picture. So I give you my adoration as a player but I also give the most horrible critical eye as a consumer. nuff said.
  21. Oops. I hadn't considered you fellas would follow me or know what I was talking about, lol. Except, please don't get me in trouble because I've learned to tread lightly and that is my intent. My attempt is to sort of agree with your sentiments but direct them in a more constructive path than just, "This game sucks. . .blah" Hope you understand. Also my DayZ purism is to be taken lightly. Yes, I may vomit at your 3rd personing, billion vehicle spawning, no join or kick ways, but I also love all you guys.
  22. I can't believe I just voted "yes" because I so want "no" to be true. However I know I'm in a minority. Simply look at the server list in mod or SA and one will see undeniable evidence. People gravitate towards donater perks and billion vehicle spawns. I guess this is how this works. Dean Hall moves the needle a lot. The marketplace forces the needle to come back to little. And now there is a niche market again for an "extreme game".

    A mysterious shipwreck up north

I like the layout up north. Looking at the street layout one can sort of imagine what it will be like. Although, I hope they take the time to add some new, unique stuff up there. I love Svetlo, but it is very much more of the same. Still hoping for a prison, how bout a stadium or theater. Utes, what's going on there? Hope they flesh out that golf course a bit, too. Forgive me purists, but the completed train tracks suggest something as well. Of all the hokey suggestions out there, this could be kinda cool. A huge underground bunker/command center, oh yeah.
  24. For those who haven't played since maint this morning, could you tell us what specifically is wrong with exp?
  25. I can agree that currently the system is flawed since it is oh so apparent that this ability to rent servers is attracting the exact type of players most of us don't want. BIS is sort of enticing them to cheat (yes I consider loot farming cheating). Some comments here are so disgusting but also the best arguments for implementing private hives immediately. If you are so anti social (you do realize you're playing an MMO, right?) and/or afraid of losing your gear (you do realize the whole point of DayZ is to be brutal, right?) then yes, please leave. Please go to your private hive. If you enjoy straight-up team vs team battles then I'd recommend another title called Arma 2. It is a military simulator with mostly all the same assets as DayZ. However it is a full release game so you won't be bothered by all the alpha glitchiness of DayZ. I believe Arma 2 features customizable servers (you can kick whomever you want, run any scripts you want). The only major thing that is different is no zombies. So basically not different at all since the zombies haven't really been done yet for DayZ. The smattering of zombies we see now are essentially placeholders. So yeah, if you hate people or can't stand overbearing rules, I'd try Arma 2 or Arma 3. You can do whatever you want on your server with your buddies. And since a common feature of "join and kick" servers is a desire to do nothing but get all loot as quickly and easily as possible and then join a busy server to do exclusively pvp, I'd recommend Arma again because you wouldn't even need to do ANY looting at all (your soldier will spawn with all high grade stuff). You could go immediately to the pvping with your buddies. As for me, I love going down to the coast to meet new survivors. There's a lot of cool DayZer's out there. I quite enjoy being an actual part of the community. p.s. 233 hrs and not a single hacker, thank you again Bohemia, I can't stress enough how huge that is for me!
