Is it worth buying Arma 2 Combined Operations now?
Obsolescence replied to louie9's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If you want Arma 2 anyway ---> Buy it for DayZ:Mod If you don't want Arma 2 anyway ---> Buy WarZ and play until DayZ:Game I don't think WarZ is going to be better than DayZ:Game, but I do think WarZ is going to be better than the current state of DayZ:Mod. Considering that WarZ will cost ~$10 less than access to DayZ:Mod, the only real deciding factor with less than 2 months till DayZ:Game is whether or not you want Arma 2. -
One wolf does not a pack make.
Obsolescence replied to mr_chabowski@live.co.uk's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Lonewolf reporting in: The game is too easy. Even the standalone, I suspect, will be too easy. I prefer lonewolf play because grouping makes an already easy game even easier. I will never be eager to group with people unless you make it too difficult for me to thrive by myself. Please, Rocket, force me. -
Consolidated Weapons/Equipment suggestions
Obsolescence replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
No Katanas. Don't even think about it. Also, please make sure that we have to spend lots of time running around with a shitty semi-auto hunting rifle or shotgun before we find a auto/military weapon. The best part of the game is when you have the basics you need and a shitty/trusty rifle or shotty with limited ammo. Don't lose sight of that. Nobody enjoys playing DayZ for DayZ's sake when they have a AS50/Mod 48/FN-FAL what they are enjoying is playing Arma 2 against other people playing DayZ. Trust me. Also, for the love of god, introduce some kind of weight system or endurance system. Running for 8 Km non-stop while carrying engine parts, two tires, supplies, M249 saw, PDW, and a tool belt that would make Batman drool is purely stupid and unnecessary. We can get sick from being too cold, but we can't get dizzy or pass out from a death march? -
Stop saying "friendly" and immediately trusting me
Obsolescence posted a topic in New Player Discussion
For the fourth time since I've been playing, a player said "friendly" to me. Sensing sincerity in their voice and actions, I said "friendly" back... and then proceeded to shoot them in the head when they weren't looking because they had things I needed (this situation only seems to occur when I'm a new spawn with nothing). I'm writing this as a warning to new players. Just because someone (like me) has the survivor skin and not the bandit skin does not make them less dangerous. In game, I don't need your help and I don't care for your company. If you can't survive and equip yourself on your own then you could only drag me down. Even if you are self-sufficient, I have no need or use for you because I have no trouble equipping myself solo. Until Rocket finds some way to make keeping you alive worth my while, expect to be shot on sight, unless you declare yourself friendly -- in which case I will take my time shooting you in the head so I don't have to listen to you whine and complain about it. Welcome to DayZ. Never trust anyone you don't know in real life. Oh, and bring on the flames :) P.S. This isnt a guilt thread. I was just hoping to warn new players that people like me are out there and your current strategies are not accounting for my bullets that are ending up in your brains. Did those "friendlies" I shot in the head have honor? I swear I swiped almost every item off their dead corpse but I never saw any honor. And I'm not a coward, I'm an opportunist. When you say, "friendly," I hear, "if you say friendly back to me, I'll turn around and let you shoot me in the head and take all my stuff." I never had any intention other than killing you and taking your shit. When you say, "friendly," it just presents me with a less risky method to the same end. A coward would run away. A coward would say, "friendly," because they're scared of losing their shit. I was perfectly content to have a firefight and risk death. You just provided me with a better opportunity. There is a trail of 'honorable' corpses in my wake, therefor, from my perspective 'honor' is not a selected trait in a post-apocalyptic zombie hellscape. Again, I'm not a monster, I'm a pragmatic opportunist. I have no philisophical or moral qualms with cooperation or mutualism. I've played 900+ hours of L4D/2 in my lifetime (a game where cooperation and teamwork is essential). The problem is that in DayZ there is no benefit to cooperation with strangers, unless you are a newbie and can't handle your own shit. If my goal is to live as long as possible or kill those who try to kill me, I literally have nothing to gain from grouping with strangers except an early death. I partially think this is because survival is too easy and communication is too difficult. Nobody who has played more than a couple days dies from starvation or dehydration, and randomly bumping into strangers is not a good way to find like-minded individuals. Also, being able to change your player name at any time negates the ability to build a reputation as an asshole who should be shot on sight. If in my experience, playing nice with others benefitted me more, believe me, I would be doing it.- 125 replies

1) IF YOU INTERPRET THIS IDEA AS PAY2WIN I URGE YOU TO READ THE WHOLE POST OR RE-READ THE POST. 2) THE PRICES LISTED IN THE EXAMPLES ARE NOT PER PERSON -- THEY ARE PER GROUP. Last I heard, Rocket was planning to charge people for the standalone and then charge for additional maps. I have no qualms about charging people for the standalone (following the minecraft model of pricing). However, I think there is a better way to make money than charging for maps. What if Rocket et al offered custom clothing/banners/cloaks etc with group emblems or markers on them for a group fee? For example: You're group could purchase an armband in the color of your choice for $20. Anyone you gave permission to could use this armband. You're group could purchase a helmet with a custom single-color emblem of your choice for $30. Anyone you gave permission to could use this helmet. You're group could purchase a trenchcoat in the color and with the markings of your choice for $50. Anyone you gave permission to could use this trenchcoat. If there is a crafting system, you could still force people to craft the items (so they don't get some nice or camo type of item from the start). I think this system would be better than charging for additional maps because charging for maps will inevitably split the community. I might be happy to purchase every new map, but if my friend doesn't we can't play together and get the full experience of DayZ. Also, using custom identifiers like this would allow Rocket to force no nametags on all servers, because not being able to identify your team by pointing at them would incentivize groups to purchase these items. Anyway, that is my idea. Of course, the examples listed are just a meagre sample of the possibilities using this system. Also, once a design/item is purchased it would be locked from duplicate purchases (so no two groups would have identical items). What do yall think? The charge would be a 1-time event for your whole group. If you have 10 people in your group then it would only be $5 each. If you have 20 people it would only be $2.50 each. The charge isn't per person, the charge reserves the item/design and gives you the ability to permit your group members to use it. I would agree that it would make the experience feel less authentic if you just got them at each new spawn or something. However, I'd suggest that you must find the base item and then craft it and some materials to make the unique item. In real life, gangs use unique identifying markings/items/colors to distinguish group members from outsiders. Why would we expect anything less in a zombie apoc? Without this system, there isn't likely to be any way to reserve uniquely colored/designed pieces of clothing for your group to use.

does anyone even use sub-machine guns?*added poll*
Obsolescence replied to t3hnoob's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Question: How many shots does it take to kill if you shoot them in the head? Answer: One. Based on this astonishing revelation, I suggest you shoot your opponents in the head. -
You find a can of Mountain Dew and you...
Obsolescence posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Made this topic to see what the majority of players do with their mountain dew. That is all. If you preference isn't represented in the poll feel free to elaborate in your reply :D Edit: Polls not working =( -
I've never understood how anyone enters or plays this game expecting anyone to be friendly or do anything other than go out of their way to kill you and/or take your shit. When I first started playing a couple months ago I only had a few guiding principles: 1) Do whatever you must to get more/better gear. 2) Kill those you can. 3) Run from those you can't. So far I'm still loving my survival strategy, although it does transform a bit once I get all my gear... I also feel the urge to take less risks and "sit back and relax" once I have all my gear, but I don't like that feeling so I normally just choose to go to NWAFB/Stary and try to get into fights with people until I die. Honestly I wish they could find a way to slow weapon/item acquisition in the mid-game phase. When all you have is your trusty enfield, a single mag, a can of beans, and a canteen; these are the best of times.

I have an effect suggestion: none. The terrifying part will be that acting immorally or amorally doesn't have any inherent consequences at all. Spooky, amirite?

A better way to monetize the standalone?
Obsolescence replied to Obsolescence's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Thanks for being civil about your opinion lol. I'm wondering though, don't you think most people would like to have unique pieces of clothing that they could craft to identify their group, and do you think there is any other better way to create unique pieces of clothing? -
You can't fight the people who hack in these weapons because they may well have god mode enabled and if they die they just hack all of their equipment back in and are good to go. You could fight the people who just find these weapons on dead hackers, but they wouldn't have the weapons in the first place if it weren't for the hackers. I don't think this is a good idea, and would result in more bambis being killed by this overpowered gun. Plus, thermal doesn't belong in DayZ - imo.

A better way to monetize the standalone?
Obsolescence replied to Obsolescence's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I just edited the post to make it extra obvious that the charges are NOT per person. You pay to reserve the design so that it is unique and you are given the ability to permit your members to wear it. If you have a group of 20, the $50 trenchcoat designs would only be $2.50 per person. -
A better way to monetize the standalone?
Obsolescence replied to Obsolescence's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Did I do a bad job of presenting my idea? I also hate pay2win systems (here's looking at you, Diablo 3), but how is purchasing a colored armband pay2win? How is purchasing a helmet with your group logo on it pay2win? How is purchasing a trenchcoat with group markings on it pay2win? Presuming you must still craft the items in game, and that the generic forms of these items are available to anyone, why are your complaints about this idea valid given that there is no gained advantage to purchasing these items except being able to visually identify your groupmates? I'm not suggesting they sell cloaks of invisibility or something functional like that lol. -
Does my FPS seem reasonable? [Specs Included]
Obsolescence posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
I get 50-70 fps in wilderness and 20-35 in cities. I was just hoping some people could comment about whether or not these results seem on par with my specs, because considering there isn't much room to upgrade my cpu I'm surprised that my fps drop is so huge in cities. 3.2 Ghz AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 8 gigs RAM @ 1600 Mhz Radeon HD 6970 2 gigs GDDR5 120GB 10,000 RPM HDD I'm fairly certain I'm CPU-bottlenecked because I can adjust many of the GPU intensive settings without seeing a rise/drop in FPS. I've followed all of the tweaking guides I could find and this is as good as it gets for me it seems. As always, thanks for the comments/suggestions. -
I was wondering if anyone here knew a program they could recommend to parse data from a website periodically. I hope I'm using the correct language to describe what I'm trying to do. Essentially, I want a script/program that automatically grabs an array of numbers from a website's source code every day or so. Anyone have a recommendation? Thanks for the help/suggestions.

You know you play to much DayZ when...
Obsolescence replied to jbircher96's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You look up at the clouds, expecting them to be floating east. -
Suggested Change: Make hachet's very rare (perhaps 10x as rare as they currently are). Alternative Change: Make hachet's wear down and become ineffective/break. Expected Outcome: By making the ability to chop your own wood rare, cooperative play will be encouraged because the only other way to aquire wood will be to loot cities (residential, farm, grocery stores). This means that most players will be able to kill animals for meat on their own but they will be much more likely to share campfires with strangers or friends. On the Takistan map, there are no choppable trees and so routinely I have shared fires with strangers because one of us had plenty of meat and the other found a wood pile in a house. Reasoning: Hachets would be widely sought after in an apocalypse, and so there would not presumably be very many left when you go looking for one. Also, axe heads dull and break, meaning that even when you found one it would not be all that long before it wore dull or broke and was no longer able to cut wood effectively.

Headshots: Instant Kill or Not?
Obsolescence replied to catface.jpg's topic in New Player Discussion
This whole thread seems full of scrub whiners. I normally have a 90%+ headshot rate on zombies and the only type that ever take two hits is the pilot heli crash zombies. I can confirm also that headshots work on players and are one-hit kills but I can't remember the last time / if I headshot someone with a pistol or makarov, specifically. -
Suggestion: Reduce the chance of finding backpacks, food, soda, and all tools/supplies in grocery stores. Expected Outcome: Currently, grocery stores are your one-stop supply locations where you can routinely find almost everything you need to survive in the wilderness (often you'll get an alice pack, map/compass, and 2 of the three necessary hunting gear [matches / knife / hachet]). Fresh spawns typically run straight to the nearest grocery store and are instantly halfway to being fully geared. De-focusing survivors on looting grocery stores will promote more exploration and looting of residential areas currently ignored. Reasoning: Grocery stores, 7/11's, and Wal-Marts would be expected to be the first place most people would try to go in a z-apoc. That means that despite the high chance of loot being there, most of it will have already been picked up. If you either reduce the range of loot that can be found there or if you reduce the chance of all of the loot spawning then players will seek out backpacks and other grocery store loot in residential areas.

Where are they? I haven't seen any kind of changelog or list of certain changes/developments.

I've seen several posts asking about Takistan, so now, having played on Takistan for a few days, I want to share some interesting / awesome things I've learned about this map that may interest you: 1) You can't chop wood with your hatchet! At first glance this seems terrible, but let me explain the effect it has on the game: campfires were meant to bring people together to chat, share, be friendly. Since players are unable to chop their own wood, players will often share a campfire with friends or strangers. I ran 2 Km just to meet a player who had found some wood and no less than 3 people cooked their food off that fire. They also shared some of the meat with the guy who found the wood. This not only helps people group, but it is the best way to regain blood because... 2) There are no hospitals! This means blood bags can only be found in random spawns, making them rare as gold. I get more excited in Takistan finding a blood bag than I do finding NVGs or a Ghillie. 3) There are no grocery stores! No grocery stores means no easy ALICE packs. It also means no reliable food. Both of things are fantastic if you find survival on chenarus trivial. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Take-away points: - Forced scavenging for wood makes cooking meat a social affair - No hospitals makes blood bags/epipens as rare as they are life-saving - Better backpacks are harder to come by, replacing the standard ALICE in Chenarus - Starvation is a real and haunting posibility in Takistan - Dying slowly through attrition, and desperation, is more common as blood is difficult to regain - Getting sniped anywhere is a very real possibility and you must be more strategic in how you move around the map - Zombies see much farther and more of them can see you, running/sprinting upright within 150m or so will draw zombies too you in a hurry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Takistan is for you if: You wish survival on Chenarus was more difficult You wish there was more military loot (I've seen over 18 barracks in 3-4 locations so far). You wish zombies were more of a threat You wish you'd die of starvation instead of players every once in a while You wish regaining blood was more difficult Takistan is more difficult and challenging than Chenarus, period. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say it is a better DayZ experience, but if you like your zombie apocalylpse brutal and unforgiving then you should definitely give it a go. Good luck out there (don't forget to pick up some wood!).

How To: Install & Run DayZ on Mac
Obsolescence replied to PygmyJess's topic in New Player Discussion
Love the moustache avatar, pygmy. Nothing to post of value. Just wanted to throw some love your way since I saw your thread about girls and gaming in general where you took some flak. Keep being awesome. -
If you enjoy hacking by proxy why not grow a pair and just hack yourself? Beggars and choosers, ya heard?

Stop saying "friendly" and immediately trusting me
Obsolescence replied to Obsolescence's topic in New Player Discussion
I could and would try to kill them anyway. The point is that if you reveal yourself as a player who trusts others then I can simply kill you, as I already planned on doing, but with less/no risk to myself. A cow presents no threat and never asks me if I'm friendly, so there is no advantage to saying anything to a cow. When you believe that I am friendly you become a cow: a cow that I can walk up to and execute without risk or danger. I never said what I am doing in these circumstances is difficult or skillful. I suspect the people I killed also feel that I am a loser and no good at this game. I'm walking around with their shit and they're dead on the ground. In a game of survival, I believe that is known as "winning." -
I believe it depends on your aspect ratio and FoV settings. The best thing to do is download the shooting range custom map for A2/OA and figure it out for yourself. And, no, the mildots are roughly evenly spaced and therefore cannot represent equal distances (see the acog m16 scope to see what equal distance crosshairs look like). A bullet falling is under acceleration due to gravity and travels in a parabolic arc. That some people could assume evenly spaced dots on a scope would represent equal distances is a testament to the failure of our math and science education in the U.S. if not elsewhere.
