    anti riot shield & more

I like the idea of huddling in a corner using the shield to fend off hordes of zombies while your buddy comes with an ax to try and get them off you. Equipping the knife would be good, give it lousy range and Makarov-level damage so you're pretty much guaranteed to get hit trying to use it on zombies or players.
  2. I like to think urban maps with enterable buildings could become practical. Technology is getting stronger all the time, but it seems to me the engine would have to have very intelligent culling. What games are out now that do this best?
  3. Yeah, flashlights, maps, toolboxes, all that stuff counts as weapons in the tent. I got into some trouble when I had a weird match fetish. I didn't find a single box of matches for the first two weeks I played, so when I finally started finding them, I'd put them in my tent. After a while, I had a hoard of matches and no place to put guns.
  4. I agree with Oldy. Take all the suspicious stuff out of the tents and put it into the Ural, then save all the tents so they won't restock on the next server restart, then go destroy the Ural full of ill-gotten swag somewhere. Helicopter is best used for sweet flips.
  5. I'm friendly to a fault as well, but only as long as I'm essentially harmless. There are plenty of people who will be your bros when they don't have a weapon, and even after they find one, they'll often continue to trust you on account of they had no choice but to give you a chance to prove you aren't a jerk. But when a group of strangers has been together for a few hours, and they start having some loot, then you start getting shot in the back for a camping tent or AK-74 Kobra. I'll pal around with randoms while we both have a hatchet, but if I check a barn and he checks a barn, and my barn has a CZ 550, I take it out the other side and don't look back, because a scoped rifle is just the sort of thing that would make a friendly newb go all Treasure of the Sierra Madre on me, and I don't need that kind of grief. When you have something that people are willing to kill you for, you have to expect people to be willing to kill you for it, and that puts you squarely in the realm of paranoia. Until I get there (Lee Enfield and ALICE pack seems to be the best gear you can carry without everyone wanting a piece of you) I'm a very nice guy. When I pick up that AKM or Coyote pack or M24, it's creeping and shooting whenever I meet someone that has so much as a Makarov or Hatchet.

DO YOU KNWO WHAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS

I remember a time I was trying out Utes (needs work) and some kid came up to me (new spawn, no weapons) with an M4 and starts telling me over voice how I need to not move and he'll shoot me if I disobey him. So I chuck a flare at him and zig-zag for the trees while the zombies swarm. I find him, hours later, when I have an AK-74u, and we have a nice little engagement. The rules are fluid, you need to use the resources at your disposal to come out on top. Walking into a building that contains a hostile armed player is almost always a bad idea. Turn down the suck.

Why is the M14 so overlooked?

Quick question, hoping not to derail the thread: I know I can turn a 1-shot revolver clip into a 7-shot M1911 magazine, so can I turn four 1-shot M24 clips into a 20round DMR mag? Can I turn a 1-shot DMR mag into four 5-shot M24 clips? Haven't actually tried it, figured someone might have done. M14 remains a great gun, and if the dot bothers you, just score a DMR for long-range shenanigans and you're golden forever.

    American Weapons and Russian Weapons

VSS Vintorez is a weapon built by assholes, for assholes, and when you equip it you actually sprout additional assholes, because you are an asshole. No way is that okay in DayZ. Asshole.

How to salvage the Czeck Vest Pouch

To make room for the tuna.
  10. Smash 'em up. Tractors are terrible, the only conscientious use for a tractor is to ride it into Cherno beeping the horn and declaring that you are Farmer John and you are thrilled with the year's harvest of shambling undead. Then drive into a wall so the dumb thing blows up and maybe something useful spawns, like something with two effing seats.

DO YOU KNWO WHAT REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS

That's why God invented fragmentation grenades. At least then you'd have died in a hilarious accident, rather than a lame gunfight.

Why are dayz players so hated?

DayZ's style of play and even the general mechanics are not up to the standards of hardcore ArmA2 players. Not that DayZ players aren't good players, it's just that it's a fundamentally different game. It's like having a World of Warcraft player roll up on your Warhammer 40k game and want to jump right in. "I know all about Orcs," he might say, or, "I have tons of experience with complex damage calculations." That's all well and good, but your game, with all its nuance and character, is not going to prepare you for this other game, with it's nuance and character. Plus you're not taking it seriously enough. They get uppity, and they kick you out. Meh, if you're really trying your best to enjoy ArmA, then it's probably their loss. I myself want to get into the more technical aspects of ArmA, but all the coolest things, like artillery and remote UAV target designation, is too hard for me to figure out easily on my own. I'll have to buckle down some time and learn it.

Intro for standalone , movie by Rocket.

ArmA has some pretty good cinematic tools with it, doesn't it? I feel like the mission editor can do cutscenes for intro and outro with some pretty clean scripting and camera control, although I've never tried it myself. I'm surprised there isn't more DayZ machinima. Is there any? I remember seeing a trailer for a story about a helicopter repairman living through the initial zombie outbreak, but the voice acting was spotty and I couldn't find the full episodes, so I forgot about it.
  14. hatfieldcw

    Evacuation mode

I definitely think this could be done. It might not even require a mod, I'm pretty sure the ArmA editor has all the tools needed to make this sort of gametype a reality. I was trying to make a short mission along these lines, where I and a team of my buddies would fight through Chedaki fighters on Utes and get to the dock at Strelka, then signal our position with a smoke grenade so a PBX would come pick us up. Couldn't figure out the script for the smoke signal, so I made it a radio call, and then I couldn't figure out how to have the lousy boat take off when everyone who wasn't dead got aboard, and then I couldn't get it to leave without our douchebag sniper who wouldn't get out of the stupid lighthouse so we were all getting murdered in the boat while he collected ears. Dickhead. In short, my mission sucked, but a non-sucky mission editing guy could make the mission you describe without a lot of difficulty. I like the idea of starting out on Chernarus, getting exfiltrated by chopper to Utes, where you have a second mission to defend the chopper while it refuels at the airstrip (with secondary objectives like getting files from the ATC and grabbing weapons from the Utes base). There are lots of ways to add narrative to ArmA missions. You could get some voice actors in on it and really do it properly.

How to salvage the Czeck Vest Pouch

I say make us start with the 6-slot and have the 8-slot spawn in supermarkets/residential zones. Make them more common, and make the assault pack more common in military zones, then make czech pack, ALICE pack and Coyote pack rarer proportionate to their size. It's dumb that the only real backpack upgrade anyone ever has to think about is going from the ubiquitous ALICE pack to the rare Coyote pack for those four extra slots.
  16. Are they making a new engine for it? If BIS is running production, I would expect it to be some form of the ArmA3 engine, which should be modern and robust. They'll likely be able to use the same team of developers on both engines, making improvements quick and effective. At least that's what I'm hoping for. I love the ArmA3 videos I've seen, it looks absolutely bangin'.

    Please..... no killing trees again!

Ditto me. I don't snipe much, so I don't spend a lot of time mashing myself prone back into pine trees. I understand that this is a common pastime for some, so they probably run into the glitch frequently. I also never have trouble with ladders, and I've only ever shut a door on myself once. Shock, fracture, maybe a thousand blood lost. I guess I'm just lucky, except I've never found NVG and in the ten or so helo wrecks I've found, I only ever got a stinking Bizon.

Give Me a Reason To Kill Zeds

They drop beans and Pepsi. Once I killed a military zombie with my last M14 bullet, and it had a DMR mag on it. Awesome. Points are for winners. Gives you someplace to put that pile of tin cans and wood so you can hide it and not have a big heap of junk outside the industrial site you're farming for fuel tank parts. Ever since Resident Evil 2, I've supported the notion that zombie hordes are endless and there's no way to make a serious dent in them, so you just shoot the ones that are directly in your way and get on with the task at hand. I'd like to see the zombies in DayZ able to force fights sometimes. maybe by running faster or by tackling or whatever, but that would be a humongous jump in the game's difficulty, and the community may not be in an emotional place where that sort of thing is tolerable to them.

Why is the M14 so overlooked?

M14 + DMR is a winning combo, for sure. Ammo's plentiful and interchangeable, and as long as you have a sidearm that can use SD mags (M9, G17, PDW), zombies aren't really a problem for you. I'd say the Mk. 48 mod 0 beats the M14 in pretty much every category, though. 100-round belt that takes as much inventory space as 40 rounds of DMR ammo, automatic, same sight, power and noise. I hate the idea of my guy having the big MG though, it's like the .50cal rifles, it's just aesthetically jarring. M14 was my gun of choice in hardcore CoD matches, and it's my gun of choice here. Heck, I'm thinking about buying one so I can see how great it is in real life. Not a cheap rifle, though.

    American Weapons and Russian Weapons

Catastrophically, or magnificently? Either way, using advanced anti-aircraft missiles seems a little out of place in DayZ. It's already a little weird that everyone who washes up is a capable helicopter pilot, and knows their way around a sniper rifle, but I'm guessing the Strela requires a huge amount of training to use. Maybe not. I'd prefer to get away from the universal soldier situation we have currently, not deeper into it.

Why do people put tents in tents ?

If the standalone gets better inventory metrics, I hope it'll become possible to have loaded packs in other storage containers, so I can have my food/drink/medicine bag for normal play, my SD/smoke/empty space bag for barracks raids, and my flares/chemlights/space bag for night raids. Having a "starter kit", like an ALICE pack with a rifle, ammo, supplies and tools that I can have in the back of my truck to give to newbs I recruit would be handy too.

Why do people put tents in tents ?

Maybe they found a tent and didn't need it yet, so they stashed it in one of their existing tents, where they store their legitimately obtained gear for future use. It's possible that they had something in mind other than getting robbed when they set up that tent. What's the matter with you that you get angry when people don't structure their stockpiles to make your life more difficult? Do you feel like they aren't taking you seriously? Do you feel like they don't have enough respect for random dudes who will come and take their stuff? Are they making you feel like your style of play is not sufficiently acknowledged by the community at large? I don't see why you're so busted up about this. It's convenient, it's good, you got some rare items from a guy and didn't have to face danger. WHy complain about it on the forums?
  23. hatfieldcw

Just Curious on which gun I should have taken

If you have a tent or truck or something and can have a gun stashed for special occasions, I say get an M203 and some flares. They're just fun to put up in the night sky. I wish they'd cause zombies to stop and stare upward so they'd be momentarily blind and deaf, but it's enough just to enjoy the light show. And yeah, the M14 is a boss gun. If it weren't for the Mk. 48 mod 0 beating it in every category (except style, obviously), I'd never use anything else. Up close, far off, the M14 solves problems.
  24. That's true, but since the guys who owned it probably have decent infrastructure and a strong presence on the server, they'll be online moments after the next server restart either standing at each helo spawn or zipping between them on ATVs or dirt bikes to reclaim their whirlybird. They'll have all the parts in a truck or boat and they'll get that sucker up and running inside of twenty minutes, and then they're back in control of the skies.

Hero skins have bullet proof vests?!

I've been wearing the camo clothes. I like the pants. Vest makes me look fat, though. I've only ever seen a few guys with hero skins, and they've all been dickheads.
