What DayZ needs is NPC's with exclamation points over their heads. "Hello Survivor! I used to be in the recycling industry before the apocalypse. Go get me 15 bent tin cans from Kamenka over there and I'll reward you with a Makerov."

Press M. Servers differ, some will show your position (mostly Regular servers) as a blue dot with directional arrow. Others (most veteran) will not. It does not show loot locations. You'll have to check an external site for that. Not built into the mod. You have to use vent/ts/steam to do voice privately with friends. Press the "," key to switch to direct chat in game, and the type "/" to type a local message to all players, or CAPSLOCK to speak to local players. Not sure of the range...its short...like 100m maybe. You don't in all situations (like chatting with a buddy) want to do this. Use with caution! Check out the New Players forum, its for all this kind of stuff!

I really hate to even post in this thread, 'cause let me be honest - I don't know the answer to your question. But I gotta point out...ALT-F4 is not a "feature of the game." It is a feature of Windows to hard close open windows/programs...not intended as an option when under fire or in a bad situation. People get upset because obviously there are many people abusing/exploiting this. I do know what you mean, there are times when a hacker has teleported you, you are dancing and don't want to know whats coming next, etc. Anyway, carry on

I was at like 6k, then when I died I had a hero skin. But now it always starts at 0, as does my zombie kills, whenever I log back in.
-
"I re logged quickly to lose the zombie horde" Do people really play like this? I guess I am missing something, because I only re log to clear graphics glitches, or maybe if there is massive hacking going on. I stay and fight always...zombies, people, whatever. And I'm not Johnny bad ass or anything, I usually die in firefights.

Reconnecting to loose zombies makes you pass out? :D
Ramblin Hans replied to cocomut's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I thought it was a server specific thing. I have had certain servers where this happens every time I disconnect / reconnect to try and clear intense graphics glitches. -
Shit DayZ players say (contribute!)
Ramblin Hans replied to DannyFilming's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ahhahahahahaha -
Ok, had to share something bizarre that happened to me. I logged in, after having logged out safely the night before in a remote spot. As soon as I load in, I see someone standing right over me, gun drawn. I freak out bolt a few feet and spin, M4A3 snapping to his center of mass, flipping the fire mode to FULL, announcing into the mic I am not a zombie but a fellow survivor. He doesn't move, but he's wearing a hero skin like me. He must be AFK...who would expect to see someone here of all places...I didn't. I move behind him 20 feet and line up a shot, while trying to continue to communicate. But there he is, just standing with his pistol out, not moving. After a few more minutes, I decide to check him out more closely. I didn't really wan't to steal anything from his pack, but maybe I'd just peek. As I mouse wheel over him, it appears hes actually dead but in a standing position. I've seen that before, and started to laugh at myself a bit for getting so fooled. But, there were NO corpse flies at all, that's what fooled me I tell myself. Ok, lets check his pack. Hmm, couple water bottles, an AS50, a mag for it, 1 morphine...wait that's what I have in my pack... mouse wheel > Study Body... "His name was Tenebrous. It appears he died from" W. T. F. His face was not my face... he had no mustache, no glasses. In fact his face looked like it was burnt on one side. I took an AS50 mag, but was too nervous to take anything else, didn't want a curse or anything. Actually I was kinda worried the server was getting hacked or something, my friend who logged in with me said he heard a heli the second he spawned in...not a regular sight. And no, I didn't drink a Mountain Dew the night before or visit Green Mountain.

I can only confirm that I have had the same thing. Across many servers in the last two weeks have fixed an ATV, a van, and a bus, all of which disappeared on a server restart. The ATV we confirmed was back where it spawned, needing repair again. The bus and van we didn't bother. This was on different servers, and were only vehicles we fixed from spawn - not a the few other vehicles we found and fixed that we can't be sure were legit because they had been driven before. Not sure if its *every* restart, or if there are multiple ways of re-initializing/patching the server that may cause it, just know what we've experienced. it's a shame, because having to fix and maintain the vehicle was adding a totally new level of fun in the game.

Farthest distance you have crawled with broken legs?
Ramblin Hans replied to daspope's topic in New Player Discussion
Zelenogorsk to Cherno hostpital. And then, after amazingly successfully making it, getting morphine, getting out, and playing for a good bit - the server stops responding. Log in to another server, and I'm rolled back to when I still had broken legs! There I am having to crawl across the fields of Cherno again. Even more amazing is that I made it in and out of town safely the second time too. It's weird to think about that now, I felt like I had "good stuff", though now it seems silly. Even then though it wasn't that, it was not wanting to give up. It happened again but to both a friend and me together...we just crawled down the road shooting any zombies we saw until we had no ammo. Then we launched smoke grenades to call more in and kept chopping with our hatches. Just wanted to take as many with us as possible! -
Duping seems to be fixed with the new DaYZ
Ramblin Hans replied to ramatakahn's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Time for everyone to spawn on the beach! -
Do not stand in a field and try to wave them down. It is not the army coming to rescue you, or drop off food/medicine/weapons. :) But seriously, are helicopters armed? Friend and I got killed by one when we were hiding deep in the trees. Nailed me with some sort of explosives. I assume they have some sort of spotting gear, and/or rockets + machine guns?
-
Thanks. Yea, in this case it did seem extremely sketchy, but wasn't going to jump to conclusions. Trying to learn how to best react when we hear a chopper nearby.

HAX EVERYWHERE! Officially unplayable
Ramblin Hans replied to tehlolman's topic in New Player Discussion
Sadly it happens regularly. Having played now for about 3 weeks, have been mass killed, teleported to a spot along with everyone on the server where there are 20 bots with hacked weapons, made to dance, killed magically by helicopters shooting explosives into hidden spots, killed through walls, etc. Shrug it off, find a new server, start again. As you get more experience, you can gear up again faster. The game is learning curve, not a grind, there is no real "end game". Its more about learning to survive, where the best risk reward is, etc. Don't get attached to your sh%t, just learn from your experiences mistakes and improve. -
Why I help unarmed players
Ramblin Hans replied to killingwillum's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
First two unarmed guys I met...one stole everything from my pack, the next tried for 15 min to train zombies on me to kill me. Lesson learned. -
Why nobody will be buying Day Z standalone
Ramblin Hans replied to Revilo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Great, I already pre-ordered 10 copies. But I didn't know it would re-use gun models. Pre-order cancelled. -
On Game Theory and the Logic of Bandit Identifiers
Ramblin Hans replied to bazbake's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Good points, but right now I think its safe to say that everyone assumes that everyone is a bandit. People will still understand that just because one has a bandit skin doesn't mean they are a cold blooded killer. Just that it is more likely they are. Or at a minimum it will identify them as a threat, someone who won't hesitate to kill if threatened. I have avoided PvP alot as I'm learning, but I see myself in the same situation as you, as I think most players will. -
I've never found a server that has nameplate on I don't think...only pick veteran servers. I would like to be able to see someones name when looking at them...so I could try and identify people who have helped me / done me wrong etc when they are in my cross hairs, not sure if that's what it does. I like the servers that allow you to see your dot on the map as well. When travelling with someone helps you stay together and see positioning. Plus, just handy. I mean there is some fun in navigating in the wilds by visual waypoints, but it wears off quickly and just becomes tedium.

I had a very strange experience over the weekend. I'd found a small town that I was working, nothing too high traffic but enough to log in and have a nice scavenge routine to try and get some stuff. Throughout the day Saturday I had work to do, so I'd log in, play for an hour-ish, then log out, then come back a while later. Well, after a while I log in, and instantly it says I had died on the screen. But instead of the beach, I'm in a big open field, not grass / bushes / trees anywhere in sight as far as someone can see. A few animals roam in the distance, and a guy with an AK and a pack full of meat is sitting nearby. I don't have ANY equipment...no flashlight, no pack, nothing. I have the same health I had when I "died"/logged in. Well, the guy with the AK doesn't reply to me, so eventually I log off and take a break figuring I'd cool off a bit and then start over. But when I logged in, I was alive! With my same health and all my stuff. But the bad news was I had no idea where I was. Fortunately I had a map in my stuff, and it showed me as being like 50km from where I was! And on the other side of some nasty places...so I had a quite an adventure getting back to where I was. Any idea what this was about? My only thought is that I *think* I might have stayed in the lobby after disconnecting when I went AFK, rather than closing all the way back out to Six Launcher.

Weird experience...can anyone explain

Ever had a dream related to DayZ?
Ramblin Hans replied to tron34's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've only played like a couple weeks and I already have. I was endlessly scavenging a house...I dunno it might have been a house I lived in before... looking through all kinds of garbage...and then this freaky dude was staring in the window. -
I have a question regarding the use / storage of the hatchet. Pretty much the first thing one gets, it seems so far to me to continue to have a use even after you find a gun. Its ability to kill without attracting attention, effectively unlimited uses, and it doesn't run out of ammo when you're cornered ;) I understand how to take it off the tool belt and use it in my main slot etc. My issue is when I find a rifle, I put it on the belt and take the rifle. But now I can't use it anymore. That might be ok if I also find ammo for the rifle, but even so it seems one would want to swap out in certain scenarios. Is this possible? I lost two nice AR's last night trying to find a way to put the gun in my pack and use the slot for my hatchet. The gun seemed to disappear when I tried to move it to my pack. I took to just leaving a couple AK's on the ground...it did me no good to be defenseless if I couldn't find any clips first. Is there a way to store you main slot weapon while you take you hatchet for some choppy-choppy?
-
Ah excellent, thanks guys. So the newb coyote pack is only 8 slots if I recall, hence why I had an issue. good to know it is at least possible. Exactly, I can actually clear zombies to scavenge with it rather than belly crawl around for a half hour to just find empty tin cans in the shed. And the few pistols I've found don't seem to have the stopping power + limited ammo to get me out of jams the way the axe does.
-
So, you got killed after 30 minutes trying to get a gun...not really a reason to complain in a PvP focused game. You're entitled to spawn on the beach again after + a flashlight and a bandage, that's it. Could he have let you have the gun? Yea. Was it yours? Not if you couldn't pick it up. That's the nature of the game. Gotta shrug it off or walk away. I know it will get worse the more precious stuff you gather and the more cheezy the death, but that's what this is about. I personally spent two hours, got a nice spawn spot finally, and for the first time had a nice rifle and pistol. Better than that, I had a canteen, water, matches, hunting knife, watch, everything I need to go off and survive in the woods. I was so stoked. I got out of that town, and up in the treeline a ways out. I wander a bit in the wilderness, and then spot a cow in a field. I'm gonna kill that cow, get the meat, and feast and get my blood back up. One rifle shot, cow dead. Skinned, 8 steaks. Oh man, this is gonna taste like delicious win. CRACK. Rifle shot, from who knows where, instantly dead. Guy probably didn't even come down to check my body. Oh well. Took a 10 min break to eat dinner. I do kinda wish the game told you who killed you, would add to your experience and the server community IMO. If the "good guys" see Xkilla420killaX keeps killing people, they might inquire and want to find him. Even not, it would be nice to be able to identify the bandit who did you in. Oh the anger. Reminds me of Darktide.

I don't know, though you stated it early I don't think you recognize how much bias you actually have. "brainless pvp deathmatch" people or whatever you referred to is a pretty broad generalization, and pretty much again highlights you would rather have a zombie PvE mmo type scenario. There are some other categories I think you are missing. Of specific importance to me, explorers - one of the basic battle test categories. This game is attractive to me in large part due to its huge size and relatively difficult (without using internet aids) navigation. I also take issue with sandbox gamers being "mostly pve". Another main attraction point to this game is the unfettered, free nature of PvP within the sandbox. Do I want/enjoy getting sniped without seeing the guy at 700 m? No, of course not. But being able to choose our own motivations is freeing. So, using these expanded definitions, by admission I'd say I am equal part sandbox, challenge, and explorer. Honestly, the fact there are zombies in the mod are cool as a backdrop, but only necessary as much as any developer driven game plot. I applaud the statements you quote from the developer and hope they don't take a direction of making a giant pve zombie mmo.
