My group of friends and I had the same issue, three times. he new update came out and we respawned else where. We'd spent days running around to find each other and get together and then this happened. The only plus side was that we still had the items we collected. After that we worked to find each other again. Most of us grouped together again and were on our way to pick up another when one of our guys logged out and logged back in. He noticed that he was waaay back where we'd shot a sheep and he'd gutted it for meat. So we decided to test it ourselves, because if progress wasn't being saved we were going to stop playing until it got fixed. We found out we were stuck back there as well. Then this morning we logged on and ALL of us respawned in different locations again! What gives? I know this is in alpha, and it's a great game, but this is soooo frustrating.
