Let us load a single bullet into the Magnum and spin the barrel
rickenbacker replied to captain_morgan's topic in Suggestions
Spinning the cylinder (not the barrel, that's the bit at the front :)), then slamming it shut is a great way to destroy your revolver. -
There's a train mod for ARMA 2, so I'm really hoping some kind of moveable train makes it into DayZ.

Stahp Rocket! You're ruining teh Alpha!
rickenbacker replied to albinorhino's topic in General Discussion
Breaking the game, then fixing it is what an alpha is FOR. -
Shadow Lenin is in Polana, on a wall just north of the market. But maybe it's in all towns that have that specific house...

Just 2¢ from someone who has used these weapons in his day job

It's iconic, at least. Personally I prefer both the feel and the look of S&W (never got the "pull to unlock cylinder" on the Colts, but I can see why they went with the Python. Now give me my 4-inch S&W 686, please :). -

This old chestnut again! Why doesn't anyone ever consider that, if the semi position is at the end of the switch, it's MUCH easier to get it into semiauto in a hurry by just pushing straight through auto. -

The "Magnum", by the way, is obviously a Colt Python, probably not named that because of copyright issues. -

If you want to talk weird windage adjustments... I used a model 45 submachine gun in the Swedish army (you'd probably know it as a Carl Gustaf or Model K, but it's never been called that in its home country), and the windage adjustment on that ALSO raises or lowers the front sight, because the sight pin is just a slightly offset nub on a screw. So to adjust it sideways, you'd turn the screw, which is also the elevation adjustment, so you'd now have adjusted the point of aim both to the side and up or down... It also used a strange looking key, but at least we were issued one of these per man :). The accuracy problem in DayZ is due to the way the game simulates the human factor. Instead of making the weapon shake (well, it still does this, but only when you're fatigued), the game disperses the fired bullets randomly in a "cone of fire" type thing. This of course ruins realism, as even the most accurate rifle sprays bullets worse than the most brutally mishandled shotgun in this game. Even if you put the guns in DayZ in a ransom rest, they'd still hit randomly within the cone - which is ironic, because the ransom rest is designed specifically to remove the human factor. So the accuracy of the DayZ weapons is always going to be way, way off unless they change this system. I hope they do, as I really really hate randomness in games. It's almost never fun for the players and it's a bitch to adjust properly. Oh, and about my shooting experience: I've shot a few rifles with my dad, served a year in the Swedish army where I shot SMG's and MG's, and I'm a competitive pistol shooter. My only experience with the AR family of weapons is shooting an AR-15 for a day at a range. I found it heavier than I imagined, but very simple to operate and very easy to shoot. After a few shots I could hit targets out to 2-300m with a bit of effort, and at 100m every time. Standing unsupported I could still hit most targets from 50m, and this without any prior experience with the weapon or the sights. I bet the in-game M4 would miss half those shots. -
Didn't even use all the roads, so that's not valid. I guess we've all seen the chalk giant on the ground just north of the NEAF?

You can see anything in low-res textures. It's called pareidolia, the brain's tendency to find patterns in chaos.

Did something just happen to the character servers?
rickenbacker replied to Kushko's topic in General Discussion
"The game" isn't even in beta, so it's a bit early to talk about what it is and isn't. -
How often do you die from glitches?
rickenbacker replied to infiltrator's topic in New Player Discussion
Never. But it will happen, at least during the alpha, so count on dying every second and you won't get disappointed when you do :). -
Productive looting today(post your good/lucky finds here)
rickenbacker replied to Wolfarus's topic in New Player Discussion
That's at the airfields. I've seen lots of friendly people in the towns, but at the airfields you'd better be attentive and shoot first. -
PvE is not going to happen. It's against everything this game stands for.
-
Yes. I'd love to see some kind of modular gun belt, that you could put a pouch or two on, plus a pistol/revolver holster to add more slots. Doesn't have to be military either, look at what police and competition shooters use.

maybe in the future we should get Blank bullets?
rickenbacker replied to TheWizard14's topic in Suggestions
Because IRL people die when you shoot them. In the game, they just respawn. If you want to scare people away, why not just fire a few shots in the air? -

rickenbacker replied to TheWizard14's topic in Suggestions
As uncommon as real ammo is, blanks are even less common. Also, they'd serve no purpose in the game. -
No magic, please.

Rolling Changelog: Stable Branch: 0.32.114557
rickenbacker replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
The way the "stuffed" status seems to work in this update isn't final, I hope? Being stuffed should lead to getting the "nauseous" status if you eat or drink 2-3 more times. Being nauseous should lead to vomiting if you eat or drink anything. Auto-vomiting when you get full just isn't how the human body works, and I assume the devs know this. Unless we're all 13-year-old bulimics? -

Because they're adding much needed clothing and buildings? -
This is why you don't log out in a high traffic area.

Depends. I probably wouldn't have shot the first gun, at least not without seeing him shooting someone else (or shooting at me :)). I wouldn't have shot the other guy at all - the only reason he "looked suspicious" was your own paranoia.

So if the M4 spawns are to be decreased dramatically as civilian weapons are added then...
rickenbacker replied to Jezza93's topic in General Discussion
Probably not going to be buffed, at least not anywhere near realistic levels. DayZ simulates the human factor by making the gun itself more inaccurate, giving it a "cone of fire" (oh, how I hate that expression), rather than by making your aim shake or move. Yes, this is a very unrealistic way to do it, and it makes the guns spray bullets all over the place like firehoses, where in real life the same gun could easily put two bullets in the same hole at 100m. This makes it impossible to have accurate weapons in the game, unless you want people to snipe each other from across the map with shotguns. -
Have you met the internet? People will still use the gamma exploit, if they don't have NVG's, thus rendering them meaningless. Just as night time is meaningless in any game ever made because of this. In ARMA/DayZ you can actually see pretty well by moonlight, but if it's cloudy you're screwed. And since there is no way to stop people turning up their gamma, there's no way to play at night without being seriously disadvantaged against those who do. The solution isn't to put in NVG's, the solution is to remove night time. As much as I love it, there's just no way to level the playing field at night. Which is probably why server numbers drop slowly to zero after the server time reaches 17:00 or so.

No, but if the position updates to the GPS satellites stopped, the accuracy would start to degrade in a day or so, and within a few months (some sources say up to 180 days) they would be so far off they'd be completely useless.
