suggestion to people whining about snipers
rossmum replied to harryzhe's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This is a joke, right? I mean, this has to be a joke. There is no way somebody would actually believe this, surely? Neither Harry nor myself are American. In fact, we live in Australia, which has some pretty tight gun restrictions. Guess what one of the most common rifles here is! Guess what rifle you can get in almost any country where guns aren't completely banned, and easily at that! Even in places like the UK people can get the R700. It is a civilian hunting rifle and an extremely prolific one at that. Play a little less CoD (I can only assume that this is why you seem to attach some mystical reverence to the R700 and thus elevate it to "OMG CIVILIANS CAN'T HAVE THEM EXCEPT IN AMERICA" level) and spend more time fact-checking before you make idiotic sweeping generalisations. By the way, which country do you live in? I bet you can get R700s there. In fact, I'd be pretty much certain of it. I can't think of a single country offhand which is advanced enough to have widespread internet access, yet where basic bolt-action hunting rifles are not legal. Because that is what the R700 is, a basic hunting rifle. The M24 is just a more rugged, standardised version of it. -

At a distance where grass doesn't cover you, the game will actually 'sink' you into the ground mesh to make you less visible. It isn't perfect, but it's better than running around in the open. Crawling everywhere is a real life thing that doesn't translate perfectly to the game, but it can help since your silhouette is reduced so much. The big key is to move first, hit the deck, then move again. Don't just do the usual ArmA AI thing of proning on the spot the moment shots are fired. -
So just to get this straight, you're talking about sniper rifles, right? Not hunting rifles? You mean the military-spec rifles which, in many cases, are built off of hunting rifle actions (Remington 700 -> M24, M40, for instance)? You mean those, right, not the scoped hunting rifles which are commonly available in any country where guns are not completely banned, and which make up the overwhelming majority of privately-owned firearms in said countries? The sniper rifles, as in the hunting rifles that are built to withstand a little harsher treatment, and with standardised parts and optics? Modern military sniper rifles and civilian hunting rifles are very similar. I would be fine with less SVDs, DMRs, and .50 cals floating around, but to say all scoped rifles should be removed is idiotic, unrealistic, and downright ignorant. Terrible thread, just like every other thread where someone complains about "sniper rifles" because they're too careless to check an area before they go sprinting into it, making a lot of noise and running about in the open. The CZ in particular is too rare now - I haven't seen one since the patch where its spawn rate was severely nerfed. It should be one of the most common weapons in the game, realistically speaking.

Correct thread. The only people who see fit to complain about "sniper rifles" (news flash, modern sniper rifles are usually built off of common hunting rifles, just to military spec - there is very little difference and no argument that they are 'rare' or even 'vaguely uncommon' in real life) are those who are careless, oblivious players who go charging into the open without even stopping to think. In addition to what Harry's already said - all of which is solid advice - I have some, too, also as a bandit who hunts other players for sport: If a shot is fired, your immediate reaction should be to sprint for maybe five paces in a random direction (not 'at' the direction of the shot), dive to the ground, start crawling for maybe another 10-20 metres in a different direction, and only then do you observe the situation, find a target or likely target location, and return fire. When you know you are being watched, you should only run in short bursts, then dive down and crawl again, always changing direction so you pop up in a different place. Never use a road. If you need to navigate by one, parallel it some distance away, preferably in a ditch or treeline. Only visit large cities if you just spawned and need loot, or if you want to PvP. If you want to carebear it up, there is no reason to go into Cherno and you're an idiot if you do. The same loot can be had at much less dangerous locations around the map, and even though it may take longer, you won't end up getting shot. Raid at night. Moonlit nights are the best time to be out, as you don't need light sources to see and the shadows will hide you really well. Also, several sniper rifles in the game don't play nice with night vision. -
Is M9SD Stealth kills of 2 players in ghillies under fir trees likely a hack?
rossmum replied to nepereta's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I have walked right up to players and shot them before without being noticed, including one sniper in a ghillie who I didn't even notice until I practically stepped on him. I doubt it was anything suspicious, more likely tunnel vision on your part and good luck on his. -
Yeah, I'd love to be able to read the kinds of things people somehow made it through until they met me.
-
Of course, but thoe vehicles serve a separate, distinct purpose; the 1895 with a suppressor would be ditched in favour of the M9 SD by almost everybody, so it'd just be going to waste. Again, though, the regular 1895 could be useful as an early-game weapon.

Scorped rifles need to go or become ULTRA rare
rossmum replied to Mutonizer's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Why are scoped rifles somehow irrelevant or not fitting for this mod? They are perfectly fitting, in fact I would argue they are more fitting in this mod than any other. Players can observe and deal with zombies or other players from concealed, relatively safe positions, rather than having to run in close and then get swarmed the second they fire a shot. As it is, the CZ pulls zombies for a pretty impressive distance. By the way, someone who knows what they're doing with the Enfield - a common weapon even in starting areas - can just as easily hit people out to 3-400m, if not further. -
Make it so that the person has to actually perform an action on you, like the old greeting/intel dialogue system from ArmA 2, before they can see your name - and it resets on death. Even having tags pop up at ten metres is something I would hate to see implemented.
-
Don't like being killed by bandits? Don't go near them, don't run around in the open like an idiot, avoid other players unless you've been observing them for some time and know you can trust them. There is nothing wrong with the current system and bandits absolutely do not need to be put at any kind of disadvantage at all. If you die to bandits lots, it says more about your own playstyle than it does about the game.

Except it's not really all that random, since it's scripted to happen. The only 'random' part is when/where it happens. I don't see any point to adding scripted events of any sort to the mod. They will destroy the reason it is unique and popular, while contributing virtually nothing worthwhile to it.
-
Well you got me there, but how many other people do you think share that skillset, let alone in a pretty backwater post-Soviet republic which is now infested with zombies? As for the existing suppressors, they're already very rare, as they should be. It's not a thing I can see really being worth the effort versus how few people would find it and use it when there are more modern suppressed offerings.
-
I think he was referencing the pretty immensely low chances of finding an 1895 with its suppressor.
-
Being able to actually write something when I feel like killing time, which players will then see if they find my body, would be pretty sweet. Might add a whole new dimension to being a bandit, too. I get to read all sorts of stories!
-
Melee does not play nice with ArmA's engine. At all. It plays even less nicely with the netcode.
-
If I could have a nice little .22 and a 91/30 PU, I would be happy as a pig in shit.
-
Why do you want to add enforced, scripted encounters when the whole thing that makes this mod unique, and the reason it is so popular, is the utter lack of those?
-
No. Why should this - assuming it gets implemented - be any different from the other calculated risks you take? Every time you stop for a drink, stop to refill your water bottles, stop to grab loot, stop to reorganise your pack, stop to go for a piss in real life, or whatever, you've (hopefully) weighed up the positive aspects of that action against the risk that someone is going to find you and shoot you. Why should lighting a campfire and sitting down to play a guitar that can be heard by humans and zombies alike be any different?

But that role is already filled by other players you randomly encounter, not a scripted event enforced on everyone in the server. It's a lot scarier since you have no idea when or where it will happen. -

Also, for someone who claims to be so knowledgeable, you seem remarkably unaware of the massive difference between a .22 (what kind? Long Rifle? CB? Short? .22 WMR?) and much heavier, much faster rounds out of hunting and sniper rifles. Wind does not effect all projectiles equally, and there are no .22s in the game right now, so how that is a fitting example is beyond me. Maybe if you'd used .308 or the 9.3x62mm the CZ-550 has ingame, you'd look a little less like a poser. -

All this not even accounting for the fact that the draw distance in this mod, by my estimation, is 500 metres... e/ Beaten. I did, however, just reference off the map's grid squares. Draw distance is not more than 500m. -

You're fucking delusional if you assume anyone who doesn't agree with your view 100% has never shot. In fact, I'm actually beginning to wonder if you're the one full of it, since you appear so hung up on being the one true authority in here. I own two rifles, my family owns a further four and a shotgun, all of which I shoot regularly. I spent time in the reserves as an infantryman. I have probably done more shooting than you have, and while I can't claim to be a state champion and wave my giant shooting dick around on an internet forum, I can shoot averagely at worst. Can I hit things 700m away? I've never tried, but I hope to soon. Do I regularly take shots past 700m ingame? No. The longest I've shot at someone in DayZ was about 300 with the CZ-550, and even with an F88 with the standard 1.5x optic at that range I know I can hit a man-sized target in real life in anything up to a fairly strong wind, because I have done it. Most of the time when I shoot players, they are within 150m of me, usually point-blank. I much prefer creeping right up on them, it's a lot more challenging. You are making a giant fuss about people making 700m shots in a game, at which distance they still have to account for ArmA 2's rendition of ballistic drop (when most gamers are used to hitscan weapons which may as well be laser guns), leading players due to latency, and they have to actually spot the player at that distance in the first place without being killed. The furthest I have been fired upon and hit from by another player would be around 300 metres, and on all occasions but one it took them several shots to finally get me. While I would fully support the integration of wind, it is a comparative non-issue and certainly does not warrant removing scoped weapons from the game. I have been hit, and hit people at, over 50m with the PM consistently in this game. LMGs reload unrealistically fast. I think there are a lot more pressing issues than scoped rifles not being entirely realistic. -

Do not want to see this at all. If I wanted to fight with other players against a horde of zombie NPCs I'd go play L4D. The whole appeal of this game is that it DOESN'T force arbitrary, scripted events on people. -

Ah yes, I disagree with your ridiculous demands so clearly I am lying about owning rifles, lying about shooting them regularly, and lying about having spent time in the military. As opposed to you, who felt the need to justify their holier-than-thou arguments with "I'm an SSAA state champion, I have trophies to prove it". You are acting like a spoiled child and I would be surprised if you are older than your late teens, since no mature adult I know of feels the need to belittle anyone who disagrees with them and then claim to be the sole source of knowledge and experience in the matter. Here's a news flash for you: this is a game. If you want the shooting aspect to be 100% realistic, go outside and shoot, because as far as I am aware not a single game to date has portrayed shooting beyond 500m accurately enough to really mimic reality. I am not disputing that longer-range shooting in this game is unrealistically easy, which you would know if you had any reading comprehension whatsoever and could see past your own perceived superiority. I am saying that it is a non-issue, because vehicles in this game are not realistically hard to repair, helicopters are not realistically hard to fly, and you can reload a belt-fed LMG in the same amount of time it takes for someone to reload an M16. By your logic, we should remove vehicles, repairing, and machine guns. Your argument basically consists of "I am a champion shooter and none of you know what you're talking about, scoped rifles need to be removed because they are not 100% realistic, if you disagree you've clearly never shot". Great attitude, mate.
