Guns and gear in odd places? Yeah it's not like civilization fell or anything. As for us running like we do just assume that we too are infected. After all would normal humans be as agressive as all of us seem to be? -
Yeah basic controls could be explained. You could see society torn apart by the outbreak. I think it would add a lot to the stand alone game.

I've seen several people suggest poison. How about sugar. We could eat it to replenish blood or add it to a vehicles fuel tank to disable it. Or put it in a jerry can and leave it laying around for someone to find. -
Pity the Enfield doesn't have sights like the real thing. You'd be able to zero them...

The last two times I've logged in on an existing character I've been in pain. Both times I had tried to log into a server and gotten stuck on the load screen and had to contrl-alt-dlt to get back out.

You don't starve to death in a matter of hours so it's appetite we're dealing with in the game. Also morphine doesn't cure broken bones.
