This ties in with the wood thread.... basically, it's daft that you have to find wood piles specifically. As wood is clearly available everywhere on the map (trees, buildings, waste piles, furnature), a much better mechanic would be to make boxes of matches have a set finite number of matches in them. So, the fuel (wood) should not be a problem and assumed to be readilty available anywhere, where as match boxes are quite rare and spawn with a random number of matches from 3 to 10 or something. -

I saw nothing wrong with fires in 1.5.7. The requirement to find wood is silly, the entire map is littered with trees, woods, big forests, wooden fences, most of the buildings are wooden, then there's the scrap everywhere... Fires were difficult to light as you had to find a very flat exposed spot to do it in, which attracted Zs anyway... All that needed doing was making match boxes have a number of uses (non-infinite number of matches in them). That way the scavenging part was finding a source of fire, not the wood/fuel it's self. -

Server hopping solution.... prevent people switching servers more than once every 30 minutes or 1 hour or something. Or, have persistence of player stats/belongings work on an individual server basis. -

Water purification tablets are not for desalination (removing salts), they are for killing pathogens/bacteria etc... You would need a reverse-osmosis pump, or some way to distill the water by evaporating it over a fire then condensing the pure water and letting it run into a container. I.e. taking salts out of a solution with water is not easy... -

Ok, so it's the individual players causing the DDOS attack on the master server... well... not much you can do about that. Perhaps you could use DNS? I.e. Change the TTL on the zone file to 15 minutes. Then, when the master server is to go down, change the DNS record which points to it to point to a dump server which just does enough of the protocol to tell clients that the service is down, and to stop bothering trying to connect for at least 10 minutes. While the DNS is re-pointed, you can do the master server maintenance, then, when it's ready, change the DNS record back again, which would help somewhat, as cached DNS records will timeout at slightly different times, helping to stagger the re-connections. Perhaps I'm talking crap, perhaps some kind of round robin DNS could be used to help trickle the players back to the master server, so when the master server is brought back online, 9/10ths of the time the DNS server gives out the fake master server IP, then slowly ramps it down to 1/2 of the time, then after a while, gives out the real master server IP all the time. Maybe some DNS/bind guru could help with this...

Solution for all servers coming up at once, is, anti-DDOS code in the master server which only allows 1 new game server to connect every 5 minutes. So, it would take a couple of hours for all the game servers to become active after a master server restart.

Scorped rifles need to go or become ULTRA rare

+1 agree with OP, scoped rifles should be very very rare, or even removed from the game completely as the engine has LOD bugs at distance. -
Chainsaw would be amazing, but people are right, probably too hard to implement. A few scattered Z's in fields and woods would be a good addition, to add tension. Also, fix the lakes, you currently have to submerge in lakes to fill water bottles which sometimes looses you your backpack. Rain collectors, you should be able to construct one from an empty bottle made into a funnel, and an empty water bottle to fill when it rains. Setting up base camps, you should be able to set up more permanent camps somehow, perhaps which then get a chance of spawning a few Z's. Or perhaps the ability to fortify a building which then belongs to the player as long as they keep up maintenance. I.e. a game dynamic/mechanism which supports players setting up and defending a home base.

Tried to shoot it, failed, then it broke my leg, and I got mauled by about 20 of them. I now avoid them if at all possible, unless there's 5 max, then I'll take them out. -
Surely all that's required is a scheduled maintenance window? Say 1 hour every day from 7AM GMT to 8AM GMT? All servers could be auto rebooted during this time window, and the master server could run maintenance tasks like cleaning the database, or patching. Sure, people will moan to begin with, but they will get used to it.

Long term survival is pointless

I've been playing my current incarnation for about 3 days now, now I have 6 water bottles, a knife, matches to hunt and cook food, map, compass to navigate and know where lots of dear stands are to replenish ammo, I could survive indefinitely if I manage to avoid any bandits. I'm slowly gathering parts to fix up a Hummer, I wonder if I'll manage it... -
Sounds good. At least make @DayZ compatible with @stmovement, so that server admins can choose to allow it, and players choose to use it if they want. The movement in Arma is clunky, which may be realistic, however, when realism takes away from the player experience I think it's a bad thing.

Good idea, could it not be implemented easily by allowing only direct comms as default, but if you own a walkie talkie, it allows access to global chat/comms.

In a real zombie apochalypse situation you would have to be Chuck Norris to survive alone. The key thing that having lots of zombies in towns does is it forces people to form groups and play together. This is a good thing as it adds a whole social aspect to the game. However, I think the respawn timers need work, after a Z is dead, it should not respawn for at least an hour, perhaps up to 3 hours, meaning players can clear towns for a while, at least giving enough time to form a PVP battle over a key building/resource or something. -
I'm also totally hooked, bought Arma II CO just to get this mod, I must say, the graphics are amazing. Sometimes I forget I'm in a virtual world! No other game has ever made me be so cautious and be so paranoid about nothing happening at all, lol, quality. A few too many zombies maybe, but that's good in a way because it kind of forces you to play in teams together.
