We bought Arma2. Not because we wanted to play Arma2, but to play Dayz.BI sold a crap-ton of copies via Steam when the hype around Dayz started. Before that, nobody bought it because it's a crappy buggy game. I agree with you though. Rocket has stated many times that people should not be buying Arma2 just to play Dayz since Dayz is still in Alpha and only barely playable it's not worth the money (yet) So people only have themselves to blame for spending the money to play a mod that just barely started development.

Why would you care at all what I think?
-
Also, ... Why have this forum attached to the official web site if the devs just use Reddit instead?
-
How do you know? Do you know him personally?
-
Yeah, I have seen the other threads. I have read the "Official" statement that they will continue developing the mod. The thing is, I don't believe it. Unless the put money into two separate development projects, They have to slow down and eventually stop development of the mod in favor of the standalone.
-
Agreed. The standalone is no doubt the priority now so even if they do continue to fix bugs and add some featured to the mod, I don't expect the same frequency of updates as in the past.I'd expect updates to the mod to be less and less often as the standalone development ramps up.

Suggestion. I know that without PvP, this game would get boring quickly. But, new players just learning how to play and many others just want to PvE without *&^%*&^ sniping us right after we've spawned. My suggestion is to have some servers with PvP (friendly fire) disabled. But with a catch that may or may not be possible. Obviously players would exploit this by gearing up on PvE servers and switching to PvP later. So I suggest that charaters created on PvE servers would be unable to connect to PvP servers and vise-versa. So your character would be flaged as a PvP character at creation and cannot be changed until death/respawn. (just like your sex) Characters flagged as PvP would only be able to connect to PvP servers and players without the PvP flag would only be able to connect to servers with friendly fire disabled. Of course this may not be possible but I think it probably is. Dayz has it's own authenticaion servers so it should be possible to allow or deny access to particular servers based on the hive character data. Of course PvE only servers wouldn't be nearly as immersive and realistic and probably not as much fun in the long run. But people want to play the way they want to play. Who knows, maybe a different kind of emergent gameplay will develop on PvE servers where users cooperate instead of killing each other.

So yeah. I missed something. When you find the sweet spot and roll through the list of repairable items, you get about five or six windscreen glass, then you get the four Hull, Avionics, vRotor and Missiles. I didn't scroll past those. There were a couple of windscreen glass at the bottom I didn't see that still needed repair. Why they are split like that I don't know but the gist is that I just didn't scroll far enough to see all the items that needed repair. Confirmed. No more fuel leak now.
-
Didn't work for me. I repaired everything and then repaired everything again and it's still leaking fuel. When I found the Huey, only two windscreens were damaged, the tail rotor and avionics and of course the mrotor and engine. The Hull and Missiles were still/already green as was most of the glass. Once everything was repaired I started putting fuel in it. Had a quarter tank and was getting prepped to fly to a fuel station but when I got in it was empty again. So I started again. Thinking I missed something or needed to repair things that were already green I got 4 more scrap metal and 4 more windscreens and went back and re-repaired items that were already green.Hull, Avionics, Vrotor, Missiles. Glass is tricky. Pointing to the right spot to get a list all glass that showed up was already green but I went ahead and replaced it all anyway from the top to the bottom. Assuming the list stays in order and assuming I was pointing to the right spot to get the full list of glass it all got re-repaired. Then we quickly put in 6 Jerry cans and flew to the south-west airfield landing near the fuel tank and two of us went back and forth with 2-3 jerry cans each filling and dumping until it was full. We few around for a while looking for other vehicles, picked up some other friends and landed near the north-west airfield with half a tank left. When we came back a half hour later it was empty. Any suggestions?

All I have to do is re-boot my PC and the problem goes away for a few hours at least.

What happens when you "save" a vehicle
Hutch (DayZ) replied to blommas's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
As I understand it .... When the server is first started, all vehicles are spawned randomly within certain limits. Only x number of vehicles will spawn over the entire map. Within that number there are also caps on the vehicle types. Only z number of helos, only y number of cars, bicycles etc... Within those constraints, the vehicles spawn randomly and may or may not spawn in any given location. When the server is re-stared, everything is wiped. Unsaved vehicles disappear. Saved vehicles are respawned where they were. Hopefully with their inventory intact. Then, if there are any slots left over, vehicles are randomly spawned up to the limits. So to simplify, saving a vehicle simply tells the server to replace it where it was after a restart. Same with tents. I believe the same 7 day death rule applies as with tents. When it's first saved it's attached to the user who saved it and will remain saved until 7 days after that user dies or seven days since anyone has interacted with it. -
So I've been playing this long enough that I feel like I have it pretty well figured out. But I'm not sure if I'm missing something in regards to lowering your weapon. Double taping CTRL seems to lower your rifle but it doesn't work with a pistol. Even so I think it's just changing your stance and your rifle is still pointing forward. I have a TrackIR so I can aim at the ground and still look forward or anywhere without changing my aim but it looks pretty strange with my guy bent forward and craning his neck back up I know you can hold ALT and free look but it's not easy using the keyboard to aim at the ground and still move and look anywhere without raising your weapon. So does anyone have any creative suggestion on how best to keep your weapon pointed in a non threatening direction? Besides just facing away from them?

How to holster or lower your weapon?
Hutch (DayZ) replied to Hutch (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It doesn't work with a pistol. At least not for me. -
If I see anyone approaching that hasn't already shot at me, I take cover and take aim at them. If they point a weapon in my direction, I shoot. I learned this lesson the hard way. If all they have is a hatchet, and they come within melee range, I shoot. If they are unarmed and they come within range of looting my backpack, I shoot. In other words, if they keep their distance and aren't an immediate threat, I won't KOS.* IMO, the protocol is (or should be) Make voice contact, keep your distance and keep your weapon pointed at the ground or away from me. Any deviation from this protocol will result me attempting to eliminate you as a threat. 1.) Make voice contact. I usually don't read the text that scrolls by the bottom of the screen. I'm too busy checking my six and putting you in my sights. Turn your sound on so you can hear me and get a headset with a mic so you can talk back. 2.) Keep your distance. If you want to be friendly, fine. You can do it from over there. No reason you have to get close to me. 3.) Keep your weapon pointed away. If you have a gun pointed at my head, you're a split second from killing me and probably just waiting for me to point mine away before you shoot if you haven't already.

Public hive major let down, disconnect it.

Any data they are getting is being significantly altered by hackers. -
Public hive major let down, disconnect it.

You have my beans sir. I've made this suggestion already. There's a reason Blizzard doesn't let players move their WoW characters from server to server at will. Too much potential for abuse. I appreciate the experiment, but I believe the experiment is a failure. The Dayz dev team doesn't have the resources (yet) to make this a real MMO and they don't have the ability to make it work as a mod regardless of resources. There's just no way to fix all the problems inherent in Arma2 I would prefer to make my own dedicated server for me and my friends where I can limit access to people I trust. No hackers, no griefers, no problem. Character portability not required. This wouldn't ruin the game since PvP will still be possible and my friends will kill me as quickly as anyone else but they won't hack and the're not d1k5. It's literally heartbreaking to spend days on a character, doing everything right, only to be killed randomly by a hacker outside the context of the game and there was nothing you could have done to prevent it. PS. So how can I set up a private hive server of my own that I can password protect? Dayz devs don't make the server side code available to download unless you agree to the terms. That probably means leaked copies which means playing on outdated versions. Which is still preferable to hackers and griefers. I have my own servers so no need for hosting costs. -
US 236 Admin Teleporting players and taking weapons
Hutch (DayZ) posted a topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Could be hackers but I got the impression it was the server admin. There was a server wide announcement for some kind of "thunderdome" then the next thing I knew I was teleported to the NW airfield along with the rest of the server and my weapons were gone. I got the impression it was planned and organized. If I had any warning I would have logged off. This sucks bigtime since I was doing well surviving in the north. I had all my nessisary survival gear and have been alive for a record 4 days now. EDIT: Looks like it's happening on many different servers so I guess it wasn't the server admin. I've never seen hackers make server wide announcments before. Now I'm pretty sure it's the admin. The message comes up at login in the lobby. "Welcome to Thunderdome" Either the admin is doing it or the hackers have changed the MotD -

I was sneaking into a small town up north in daylight when a zed came too close and agroed me. I ran into a barn bleeding, dispatched him with my winchester shotgun and bandaged up. Then every zed in town converged on the barn from all directions. I ended up unloading three full clips (45 rounds) hitting at least 98% of my shots. They all went down in one shot but they kept coming wave after wave until I was out of ammo. The barn floor was literally littered with bodies. I can accept that the shotgun might draw zeds from all directions even within the radius of the whole town. But before I fired my first shot there couldn't have been 45 zeds in the whole town. They had to be re-spawning. I checked the area with binoculares from the hillside before I came into town. There were no zeds at all before I moved into town so I was the first survior in the area. They started spawning as I crept into town and from my previous experience there shouldn't have been more than 20 or 30 in the area. So either the Winchester 1866 now agros zombies for a killometer in all directions, or they were respawning as I was killing them. It pretty much makes it impossible to use the shotgun since you'll eventually run out of ammo and be overrun anytime you use it. Anyone else seen this? Is this just normal for the 1866? It was my first time using one. Next time I'll just use my Makarov.

best location for big camps
Hutch (DayZ) replied to davidecibel's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The best place to find a camp is the best place to locate a camp, and that is .... The last place anyone would think to look for it. -
Nothing will spawn in the immediate area around you. So if you log in inside a building, it will be empty until you leave beyond a certain distance and come back later. I don't know the exact radius or timing but I do know that nothing will spawn while you're next to it watching. The loot nodes are tied to the zombies so zombies and loot spawn at the same time on the same trigger. The trigger is when a player enters the area crossing some imaginary line in a radius around the loot node. So in essence, it spawns when you walk into the area, not when you leave and not if you're already there. If someome else walks in and cause it to spawn, and they take all the good stuff, it won't spawn when you walk in unless it's been more than 10 or 15 minutes. If you walk in and find someome else has already been there recently, it may respawn while you're watching if a third person walks into range past the time limit. This is only anecdotal based on my experiences. YMMMV.

Is every gun the dinner bell now?
Hutch (DayZ) replied to Hutch (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You might be right, except in this game it's not.http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/Winchester_1866 "Although in reality the Winchester 1866 is a lever action .44 Rifle, in DayZ it is a shotgun." http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/File:Ammo_1866_Slug.png looks like shotgun shells to me. -
I would suggest one way to avoid players server hopping and alt-f4'ing is to eliminate the cloud storage of character data and make it server specific. Still persistent across logins, but not global. So every server you connect would have a diferent instance of your character including it's location. This would eliminate server hopping and take away some of the incentive to alt-f4 when in danger. It would also reduce the long login times caused by the overloaded character server(s) And It would remove the need to tighly control who can run a server. Personally I would like to run a private server with local character data only, so only myself and my invitees could play on it. I would have just as much fun but wouldn't have to worry about hackers and douchbags. Ok, maybe it wouldn't be AS much fun without the element of danger that comes from bandits and other players you don't know IRL, But it would still be preferable. What happens if the server you want to play on is full or overloaded? I don't have a solution for that other than queue and wait. Not ideal I know but IMO still preferable to they way things are now. $0.02

I've done this a couple of times when I was killed by Zombies or bled out in a safe place. When I respawn, if I know where I was and I know where I am and am close enough, I'll just sprint as fast as I can to my corpse and get my stuff back. Zombies in tow if nessisary. It's not always feasable and If I'm killed by another player I assume he's looted me of anything valuble and then hid my body. Anyone else have tales of looting their own fly ridden corpse?
