    Swimming to Skalisty Island

I was running along the coast and was near Skalisty so I thought I'd swim over and see what changes the devs have made to the island. Short answer: None. It's basically the same. First, I wasn't sure about swimming, but I made it without losing any gear or health. My clothes got a status on them of "Soaking Wet" but most dried out or changed to just wet or damp after 30 minutes. I didn't drop my pack, gun or any other gear and nothing changed durability. Update: It may be possible to lose your gear if you spend too much time in the water. See more recent post below. Wasted trip though. The houses there don't seem to spawn any loot. I'm guessing the devs disabled loot spawn there to save server lag since not many people go there. No Zeds either. There is a well pump there for water but you'll run out of food eventually. I hopped to a few different servers just to be sure but found nothing in any of the houses or boat house.

    Swimming to Skalisty Island

So before I left Skalisty, I tried swimming out to the half sunk ship off the north east shore. You can't get on board, it's not entirely solid. Aaaand, I must have spent too much time in the water because I started losing my gear. My backpack, rifle and everything in my chest rig fell off in the water and were floating beside me. I kept my axe, helmet, shirt, pants, boots, etc.. The chest rig didn't fall off, only the items in it. I was treading water next to them and could see them in the "Vicinity" on my inventory screen. I tried to re-equip therm but couldn't. So I gave up and swam back to shore hoping to rest and then try swimming out again to get it back. Only when I stood up on shore, everything magically re-appeard on me and in my inventory right where it was before. I don't know if losing the stuf was a glitch or getting it back was the glitch, but beware of swimming too long, you might lose your stuff. While I was at it I decided to watch and figure out how long your clothes stay wet. I was only really paying attention to my shirt which was "soaking wet" when I got out of the water. After ~2 minutes, it was just "wet" After ~15 more minutes, it changed to "damp" After ~20 more minutes, it was back to normal. My pants and boots were dry much sooner and my helmet is still "wet" so it seems different items dry at different rates. YMMV.

    No healing status.

I've been hit a few times and just bandaged without cleaning. my "Healthy" status never changed. You're problem may be that you're eating enough to get your water and energy levels high enough for a Healthy status, but you're not keeping your levels there. Your energy and water levels will depete over time, even if you're not moving, You need to keep eating and drinking. Water needs to stay avove 3500 and Energy needs to stay above 5000 (IIRC) These videos explain all the numbers... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9YSGX22B6Z3k9-hJzJcz4w/videos

    No healing status.

IIRC from those videos, The stomach empties at 1 per second which I think is milliliters. A canteen is 100mL, a drink form a well pump is 5mL
  7. Hutch (DayZ)

    No healing status.

You need to get your energy level up. Eating one or two full stomach's full isn't enough. You need to get full and stay full for a while. You also need to balance how much food you eat and water you drink. You can fill your stomach with water but it won't give you any energy and on the other hand you can have plenty of energy but if you're dehydrated you won't be healthy. I have a "Healthy" status and my guy hasn't complained about being hungry or thirsty for days.

DayZ's Missed Connections (Find Your Combat Logger!)

True, I would avoid logging out in any high traffic area, but sometimes you don't have a choice. "No Message Recieved for 30 seconds" I hate when the server goes down when I'm in a military building or worse yet, out in the open near one.

    Swimming to Skalisty Island

I didn't see a "sunken tanker boat". Of course if it's sunk, there would be no way to get to it. Are you taking about the shipwreck off the north-east shore? I heard that it's glitched and if you go there you'll get stuck. I might try swimming out to it on my way back to the mainland or next time I'm a fresh spawn. Update: I tried swimming out there. See more recent post below. Or are you talking about the beached tanker north of Berzino? That's on the mainland and it has Lootz a-plenty.

DayZ's Missed Connections (Find Your Combat Logger!)

How do you know they were server hopping? People have to log out eventually and then log back in when they have time to play again. Just because someone logs in, doesn't mean they are server hopping. I always log out inside a building or house, in a back room or corner, preferably with no windows. I hate logging in when i'm ouside in the open with no cover.
  11. Fear. I'm not proud of it, but I've done it. Mostly out of fear. I've tried to communicate with other players before, to avoid conflict, give them or me a chance to avoid an encounter. Every time I've gotten a bullet for my trouble. I logged in last night and immediatly heard someone nearby, inside the building. My heart jumped up to 120 in an instant. It was dark, I couldn't see well, I didn't know where they were and I expected them to shoot me as soon as they saw me. This was a military bulding so I figure anyone here is armed and dangerous. I waited without making a sound and as soon as I saw a sillouette pass in front of a window I opened fire. Panic fire, emptied half the magazine. Afterwards I was ashamed but still near panic 'cause I didn't know if he had firends nearby and even if he didn't, other players nearby surely heard that gunfire. What other video game can give you that kind of emotional experience? If nobody killed on sight and everyone was friendly, the game would lose much of it's appeal. After you learn how to survive and where to get food and supplies, what else is there to do?

How do you look around while running?

The best way is to use a head tracker ... You just turn your head left or right. http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/03-enhanced-games/game-dayz.html http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/02-products/product-videos.html or http://facetracknoir.sourceforge.net/home/default.htm

    Multiple Characters?

I expect this has already been suggested but I did a search and didn't find anything. Also, I expect this would be very difficult for the Dev's to impliment due to the hive database design. I would like to have the option to create multiple characters. At least two, maybe as many as 3-5 per account. Sometimes I want to play with friends and other times I want to play alone. It would be nice to keep a character that I play only when playing with friends or clan and another I can play any time, when I want to play solo or with different friends.
  14. Hutch (DayZ)

    Multiple Characters?

Which is why I think characters should be locked to a single server. Server hopping and ghosting will always be an issue. The only solution is seperate characters per server. Which would solve my problem of multiple characters, eliminate server hopping and increase realism. Granted, servers would need to be more stable but it would solve more problems than it would create.
  15. Seems to me the Tuna and Sardine cans are mislabeled in game. In the US, Sardine cans are rectangular and self opening, Tuna cans are round and require a can opener. Did they mix up the descriptions or is it just different in Europe?

    Flight stick support in standalone

Well, the standalone doesn't have any aircraft or any vehicles at all, YET. Once they are added, I would expect it to support whatever ToH supported. http://takeonthegame.com/

    new patch and cheaters

Not sure it was cheaters. Might be a bug I've heard other users in sidechat on servers I play on report a similar event. Always while standing on a dock. They are thrown up in the air and fall to their death. I don't spend time on the docks so it's never happened to me.

    New Zed mechanics

So I didn't have alot of time to play last night but it's clear the Zed's have changed enough that our previous methods of avoiding them don't work anymore. I was quickly killed last night more than once by a combination of Zed's and Infection. My Observations .... They are easier to agro and harder to lose once they are after you. They can hit you now while running and can knock you down while running. They can still walk through walls. They can still spawn in your field of view and can spawn right next to you now. Either Zed's can now see in the dark or they can hear far better than they used to. In pitch black, before moonrise, I was quickly swarmed by many zeds while just slow walking or crouch running at distances that were never a problem before. My visibility indicator was zero and my audibility indicator was one or two bars. It was too dark to see where they were coming from but I suspect they were spawing out of nowhere right behind me. They followed me into buildings and kept coming, or if I exited the building before they entered, they just went around the building and kept after me. I could not lose them in a pine tree with zero visibility and audibility. Coughing and near death, I decided to log off and wait for moonrise so I could see better I did a little better once I could see, but not much. Zed's appear to be able to see me from a significant distance away even with my visibility indicator at only one bar. When I would run into a building, many zeds would spawn in the building right near me blocking doorways and staircases. Previously, Zed's would not spawn within X meters of the player. This mechanic appears to have been removed so that now Zed's won't spawn in your field of view but 4-6 of them can spawn right behind you. IMHO, this needs to be changed. I appreciate that they I won't be able to see them spawn but I don't appreciate having them spawn so close to me. So what have you figured out about how the Zeds work now? What other mechanics are we going to have to get used to?

    New Zed mechanics

This happened to me yesterday. I didn't get an image of it but I think know how and why it happened.I ran around a blind corner and passed right by a Zed close enough to bump into him. I ran past him and then was hit and knocked down about 10 meters away. Had to be server lag. Loot was laggy that night and hits on Zeds with my hatchet were taking a couple of seconds to register. He must have hit me as I ran past and my game client didn't register it for about a second. But now that I think of it, aren't the Zeds and their actions all handled client side?

    New Zed mechanics

So, to get this topic back on Track. My goal here was to figure out the new zed behavior. I'm having a hard time keeping the Zeds off me and finding it nearly impossible to lose them once they agro. Zeds seem to spawn all around me by the dozens in a non-stop parade. I wait in a doorway for them to pass by and clear out but they never do. They just keep spawning or they turn around and come back or go in circles. There's literally no way out without being detected. So, I learned, My fault for going into the building too quickly before all Zeds have spawned. No way out is a realistic scenario, so is patience and waiting longer for them to clear a path out. When I get tired of crawling and stand up, even in the middle of the night with one bar of visibility, I get Zeds on me from 30 meters away. So I learned, My fault for standing up. One bar is one bar. They are not blind anymore. So I run and they follow. They follow my exact path like a bloodhound on the scent. One time, inside a building, a Zed wandered in at random but did not agro. He came directly toward me, so I moved, Silently. My visibility and audibility were zero. Yet he continued to follow my every move. Slowly, without agroing, just as if he was wandering, but every place I moved to he followed. I moved in a deliberate figure 8 pattern and he followed like a dog following a scent. If I had a hatchet I could have easily killed it, but I didn't so I was forced to leave the building. So I learned, Zero bars is not really Zero bars. Even at zero visibility/audibility, there's some small number that zeds can detect if they are close enough. This has always been true actually. Even at Zero bars in pitch black night, if a Zed wandered close enough, they would agro. One Agro shedding tip for all of you I have learned ... If you have agro and are kiting one or more into a building. Wait inside the building until they have entered, then leave. If you leave the building before all of them have entered, the ones still outside will not enter, they will pick you up on the other side (where they can't even see you) and run around the building. I suppose, they can hear your footsteps as you leave the building, so when you do leave, do it as quietly as possible. Let's not hear any more about how they are broken. PLEASE. There are plenty of other topics on that subject. Broken or not, we have to deal with them. This is a game with rules. Now the rules have changed and we need to figure out the new rules. Constructive observations and tips are what we're looking for. Thanks. I'd really like to figure out how well they can hear and see now. What distance can they hear/see one bar? You learn this instinctively as you play the game, but knowing it ahead of time helps make the game less tedious.

    New Zed mechanics

I don't think more difficult = broken. Broken implies they don't work at all and clearly they do work. I was frustrated last night but I was also scared and immersed which is what the game is about. It's not a bad thing that the Zeds are more challenging, but I do think it's a bad thing that they can spawn out of nowhere right near you. I think they were spawning in the building next to me because I ran to the building quickly so they din't have time to spawn before I got there. Still, that's really frustrating to be hit by a Zed from behind when there was nothing there a few seconds ago. My post was not a complaint but an effort to figure out how they work now so I can figure out how to play the game now.

    [DAYZ SA] - ultimate Q&A

Will the standalone engine support the TrackIR head tracker? TrackIR was/is supported in ToH but I know the DayZ team has made extensive changes to the engine. I've gotten accustomed to using the head tracker and now it's hard to play games that don't support it. The best gaming accessory I ever purchased. http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/
