Dear Newbies Wandering The Coast
hoorah (DayZ) replied to DEOVONTAY MCSLANGA's topic in New Player Discussion
This is exactly why people get all butthurt and complain when they get killed as a new spawn on the coast, or with a hatchet. DURR IM FRIENDLY I HAVE NO GUN WHY YOU KILL ME? Because the second you turn your back on those tards they'd take everything that wasnt nailed down. Freeloaders are the reason everyone has a shoot on sight policy. -
I know it seems like there are people that sit out there all day waiting for the one guy to walk across the field, but I really don't think it happens that often. Some people are just better at spotting other players. I've spotted plenty of people out in the field while both of us are running to a destination, likewise, I've also been spotted without knowing where the fire was coming from. I'll parrot what others have said a dozen times - stick to the trees. They really do a much better job of hiding you than anything else. Think about this - you're running north and you spot a goat moving two fields over. Thats how easy it is to spot a player when they're running through a field in the open. I like to run along ridgelines alternating sides for a few minutes at a time. Anyone who sees me will lose visual periodically and theres a chance I might throw them off. Learn the zombie AI. Learn how far out zombies spawn. Its exploiting the AI, but everyone does it. If you see zombies in some random podunk town, and you're outside of range to spawn them - someone is in there. Keep in mind that just because a small town doesn't spawn M249s and 40 cans of beans doesn't mean it is useless. Geared, experienced players have cars, bikes, and ATVs. Those require fuel. Guess where they like to get fuel? Small towns that have refueling stations, as they are less risky. Ever stumble across a tent in the woods? Someone, somewhere put that there thinking no one would ever find it, and here you come. Same thing with players - its a big map, but people find each other.

Cz550 good to clear zombies?
hoorah (DayZ) replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
Its not what I would consider a good gun for clearing zombies. The audible range for zombies is only 180m, but I guarantee you a player will hear your shots much further out than that, so you're not being particularly sneaky with it. If you just want to kill zombies to make an entrance into a town, you'd do better by sneaking up behind them and popping them in the head with a makrov or m9. -
Ive never DCed while driving, but the time I DCed while in a car and the car had not moved, I logged back in standing in the same space as the car and it immediately killed me.

i'm new and i get killed by everyone, even when i say FRIENDLY PLAYER in the chat screen.

Wait until you are the one with the ghillie suit, some new spawn with an axe asks for help, and then tries to hatchet you to death to take your guns after claiming to be 'friendly'. -
For all "NEW" players! Our server is getting a reset so all Vehicles will be Respawnd
hoorah (DayZ) replied to smKes's topic in New Player Discussion
Free bump for a server that has an associated teamspeak. I feel thats the only way to foster any sort of communication in this game. -
Keep in mind there is some goofiness when it comes to 'saving' tents. I can't remember which, but I think if you put items in a tent, then save it, and the server restarts, every time the server restarts it will have that inventory. Nothing new, nothing lost. Correct me if I am wrong, please, but I believe thats whats happening. Funny story - I found a tent that had 6 jerry cans in it when I was on an ATV - JACKPOT! I took 4 of them, a cooked meat, and a car wheel, thought I head footsteps, and booked it out of there real quick. Came back the next morning after a server restart and the tent had the exact same inventory. The dude probably had no idea I raided his tent! Careful with this. Write down your map coordinates on a piece of paper at your desk - do not make a note in the map. EVERYONE on the server can see the notes on the map. I like to put notes that there are heli crashes or tents up at the far left corner of the map. I'm sure I'm keeping someone busy doing that :)

Moving Solo, Slow+Cautious or Fast+Reckless?
hoorah (DayZ) replied to Obsolescence's topic in New Player Discussion
It depends on what you're trying to avoid - players? Or Zombies? If zombies - f it. Run like hell, all the time. If players, you have to take it a bit slower. If I'm a fresh-ish spawn (say, low tier gear like pistol or double barrel), I'll generally run around in towns, going from building to building to lose aggro, and each time, looking out the windows to see if there are other players around. Not too worried about being hit by a sniper, and if I run into another player, I either call out to them if I'm in a mood for shenanigans, or try to gain tactical position if I'm not. If I'm a fresh spawn in the woods - again - f it. Run like hell. If I've got decent gear, and I'm not in a big city (redundant, I know), I play much more carefully. The MOST IMPORTANT thing you need to learn is HOW, WHEN, and WHERE zombies spawn. If I'm going into a new town, I try to get a view of the town from far out and use my binocs to see if zombies have spawned there. If they have, there is another player present. If there are no zombies, the town is safe-ER, but not totally safe. Tiny towns I generally dont (or do a very quick) scan of the treeline for snipers. A place like stary sobor - oh, I'm definitely scanning the treeline for snipers there. I've also heard that zombies will generally wander in the direction of the person that spawned them, even if not aggro'd. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but if it is, watch where they are wandering. If they are wandering up a hill, you probably have a sniper up there. Running in between towns out in BFE, I generally run flat out, but try to stick to the tree-line. Ideally, I'm running along the peak of a ridge, alternating sides, such that if anyone is tailing me, they're going to lose my position for a few minutes at a time at least. -
So I was just outside of Gorka the other day (night, actually) with my FN FAL NV that I had recently acquired. I had actually just gone into gorka, refilled my jerry cans, looked for car wheels, and headed out when I saw a survivor headed in. He stopped right when I saw him, so I dropped to the ground, and in doing so, lost my view of him. When I came up to a crouch, I looked all over, but couldn't find him. Then, all of the sudden, his name came up on my crosshair. I usually don't play on servers with this on, so it was a bit of a shock. Anyway, I'm looking through my scope at the spot where his name came up, but he wasn't there. I brought the scope up, down, left, and right and found the 'center', but it was just an empty field, no person. I figured the dude was in a good hiding spot and must have seen me, so I waited for him to pop his head out. After about 3 minutes, the nametag just disappeared. Shortly after, I head a pistol firing. Guess he didn't actually see me, and had gone into the town. I made a wide circle and got back to my atv and left. I suppose I could have hunted him down, but, meh. So, TL,DR - How much leeway is there in the survivor nametags? Do they stay at the last known location of the survivor, or are they always on the location of the survivor? Do they work through hills?

Got a question about nametags
hoorah (DayZ) replied to hoorah (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Much appreciated. That explains why I kept seeing the nametag but no player. I knew the guy was around me, so I made a wide circle to come and try to flank him and/or cover the town from above. I had every intention of letting him live so long as he didn't see me, but I wanted to find out where he was so I didn't get surprised. Unfortunately, that was the time my wife decided to ask me about 15 various questions, and since I couldn't concentrate, I decided just to book it out of there. Guy probably shit a brick when he heard my ATV take off. -
How do you survive for more than a few hours?
hoorah (DayZ) replied to ZePlague's topic in New Player Discussion
You can't find out who killed you unless the server has nametags on and you happen to see the guys nametag before he kills you. Either that, or get killed in a 2 person server..... -

hoorah (DayZ) replied to ZePlague's topic in New Player Discussion
In the short term, yes, you will die quickly. But he will gain the experience needed to keep him alive so much faster. How many players spend days in the forests, barns, and cities to the north only to be nailed by the first player they come across because they didn't realize how exposed they were looting the supermarket? Then they get on here and rage up a storm about how they had full gear and some a-hole just killed them out of nowhere and 'this is why the game sucks.....' Sure, zombies are easy to ditch and don't really pose a threat, except now he's going to learn that aggro'ing zombies will give away his location to other players. This way, he is going to learn that he can't run and shoot at the same time, why the high ground is so valuable, what the good vantage points are in the city, and how to spot other players before they spot him. -
Can players hear you if they are NOT in Direct communication?
hoorah (DayZ) replied to SnakeEyes (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Happens to me so frequently I wonder if my mic isn't working. People will run into your building as you're telling them that you're going to kill them, and they don't even enter carefully - they just immediately run in looking for loot without their weapon even being drawn. I almost feel bad killing them, but if they run into me I'm not taking the chance. Are these people playing with their speakers off or something? Or are there THAT many non-english speaking people playing the game? -

hoorah (DayZ) replied to ZePlague's topic in New Player Discussion
I'd recommend you stick to the coastal cities and learn how to find a lee enfield (or better, if you're lucky) quickly. Then, move around the city *carefully* looking for loot, but more importantly, not getting shot. Don't worry about getting fully geared up at first. Learn how to move unnoticed, how to get the drop on other players, and how to cut off lines of sight from elevated positions. This will also teach you the layout of the towns. When you die - learn from it. Did you get killed by someone in mutual combat? Or do other players keep spotting you before you spot them (not including snipers). This is going to get you up to speed quickly. You don't want to spend 3 hours running through the forest getting loot only to die to a player because you weren't careful enough. -
Depends on if you play with other people. I don't, but I carry 2 blood bags in the off chance I happen to run into someone I'd trust (which is pretty rare). Anyway, I'd drop a blood bag for an extra morphine. I'd also rather have more steaks than 8 primary mags, or scrap the two secondary mags in the pack. Some people carry a second weapon in the backpack, which I think is only useful if one of them is a sniper rifle and the other is for up-close work.

Can someone explain some PVP mechanics for me?
hoorah (DayZ) posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Had a situation in the fire station today and I was wondering what I did wrong. Saw a trail of zombies headed in, I was on the 2nd floor of the fire station. Figured I had a player on his way in. Hear footsteps on the stairs, figure I've got the drop on the guy. He comes up, swinging his enfield around (I had the same). I hit him first. He runs downstairs, gets on the mic and says 'yo dude, I'm friendly'. I don't trust him. So I say "alright, fine. Leave me alone. Leave and I won't shoot at you, but dont come up here' Not sure if he believes me, but FWIW, I was telling the truth. Anyway, he says "okay, fine" then immediately heads back up. I shoot him again. He runs downstairs, again, and says 'dude wtf stop shooting me'. I told him not to come up. So he comes up a third time as I'm about to go up the stairs to the next level. As soon as I see him, I fire, but the gun doesn't do anything. I start absolutely mashing the fire button and nothing happens. I know I had ammo in the gun as I had just reloaded and was sure I had 10 rounds. He hits me once and I go down, knocked out. I don't remember exactly how much blood I had when I started, but I want to say it was 9000+, and when I was knocked out I had 1500 ish, after which I died (obviously). When I made my way back to my body and picked up my enfield again, it had 6 rounds in it. TLDR; 90% sure I hit a guy twice with an enfield, he didn't die. Also, after 2 rounds, had trouble getting enfield to fire. What did I do wrong? -

Yeah no kidding. "Don't come up here" "Okay, fine" comes right back up the stairs into someone's line of fire. Kid should be dead, but oh well. There have been worse injustices. -
Please, DONT add a bandit-indicator in this patch

What I would like to see is making the direct coms work further out. I like the voice chat in the game, and I can usually get a feel for the other person just by listening to their voice. If someone sounds like they have decent intentions on the mic, I'll usually give them a chance and not kill them. So far, I've only done this with unarmed people, so that doesn't say much. If they sound like they're 14 on the mic - F that. The 14 YOs are fcking sociopaths. In my experience, those are the ones that are most likely to call friendly then shoot you when they can better line up the shot. That said, I'd like to see the direct coms work further out because using the mic gives away your position too easily. If I get on the mic and talk to a survivor, he knows I'm VERY close (and therefore, can probably see him), and usually just logs out. I'd like to think that with longer range coms, I can chat with people in the city and get an idea if I want to team up with anyone without giving away my position. Maybe it would work out to be a terrible idea, who knows? I'd still like to give it a try though. -

I honestly doubt he was a cheater. He seemed pretty surprised that he killed me when he was talking on the mic. Not sure who he was talking to, maybe someone below him? Not sure. But he was definitely bleeding, because from my unconscious state, I saw him try to bandage and saw the blood coming out. I guess I just hit him once and it wasn't enough, which pisses me off. I totally had the drop on a guy and put a big-ass 303 through his chest and I'm the one that dies....... -
Absolutely disappointing playerbase
hoorah (DayZ) replied to vibe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Exactly. I hate to say it, but I play call of cherno now. I got tired of heading north, finding weapons in barns, gearing up, and getting sniped by someone out in BFE. So now, I don't invest much time in my characters. Run in, get basic gear, try to flush out snipers. If I die, I'm retooled in less than 20 mins. -

But even if he had 12000 blood, 2 hits would bring him below zero, right? I'm not familiar with the weapon damage in ARMA 2. I know the enfield WAS 12,500 dmage, and I know it was nerfed to 6700. But is the 6700 ANYWHERE on the body? Im pretty sure I hit him center mass, but hey, I was also pretty sure I hit him twice and obviously that wasnt true. -

To be honest, I tried firing once, and when nothing happened, I just started mashing the left click repeatedly out of panic while trying to move. -

hoorah (DayZ) replied to hoorah (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I definitely, for sure, hit him once. I saw the blood splatter when I hit him, and then he started bleeding (dont remember if it was the first or the second shot that made him bleed). In fact, once I saw he was bleeding, thats why I wanted to run up to the next level - I was trying to draw him up to maximize his bleed out time. I contend that its certainly possible I missed him twice, (or just lagged out on the second one), but I know for sure I hit him once. Also, after he managed to knock me out, I heard him on the mic say 'holy crap, I killed him, I cant believe I got him!.....but I need to bandage now". Then, because we both fired enfields, zombies started coming up the stairs and hit him as he was bandaging. Pretty sure he alt-f4ed after that. What do you mean by double-strg? I'm thinking it might have been because my weapon was lowered, although I'm not sure why that would happen (considering I was in an active firefight). This is something I'd like to learn about so I don't make the same mistake twice. Does it auto-lower when you run? I was in first person mode, looking down the iron sights when I shot him. Then, when I wanted to egress upstairs, I switched to third person and backed up to run up the stairs. Then I saw him come back up, right clicked to zoom in( not iron sights), and tried firing - thats when I was getting nothing. I noticed one time when I wasnt in a firefight that my weapon seemed to be lowered. Since I didn't want to risk left clicking and firing, I switched to my sidearm, then back to primary and that seemed to fix it, but I had no idea how it got lowered to begin with. Thanks for the tips guys! -
Seriously this is getting stupid.. Three hours and not a single weapon?
hoorah (DayZ) replied to Hysterics's topic in New Player Discussion
You've got to go into the towns to find either. If you don't want to head into cherno/elektro, find zeleno or berezino. I usually find matches in the pubs/apartments or the market. Hunting knives are more common, but matches I've only found in those two areas. So, either you're going for beans or you're going for the animal gutting kit, but you've pretty much got to hit a supermarket. If I'm a fresh spawn, I just hit cherno right away and don't care if I die (assuming thats where I spawn). Otherwise, hit a town thats not as populous and cross your fingers! -

This crap, again? Playing a video game makes you a 'real man'? COD kiddies are 'weak'? Come on.
