I tried, but I still didn't have the gear, so I just respawned. -
22 day character, planning suicide...

Sorry *post deleted* -
So there I was, running around, scavenging. Brand new life, just found a military base, about 30 minutes into the game. All of a sudden, I'm in the middle of a group of about 20 people in the woods somewhere. There were about 7 tents. Most of the people seemed as confused as I was. I knew what was about to happen (they didn't bring us here to play nice) so I started sprinting away. When I'm about 20 feet out, a grenade goes off behind me and almost everyone is dead. I get up and start sprinting again, when I'm teleported back to the camp and a grenade immediately goes off, killing me and anyone that survived the first. I think that they are letting the server run for a bit, giving everyone enough time to get some cool stuff, and then teleporting everyone to them to take all of it. Is this common? These are the first hackers I've seen, but I haven't been playing DayZ for an awfully long time. I'd really hate to see this become a common issue. What would be the point of playing if everything you find is just going to be taken by hackers? Is there any plan to ban these people, or fix the hack itself?

Thanks for all of the suggestions, but my game saved wrong and, when I booted it back up, I was on the other side of the city without any of my new gear. I'm just going to respawn on the coast... -
I had to learn about the backpack the hard way. For my first 20 hours of playing, I didn't know how to use it. So much stuff I could have hoarded... Oh well. Anyway, congrats on Graduating from newbie! There is definitely a steep learning curve with this game but I agree, once you master the mechanics, it's very rewarding. I'm not quite where you are - I'm still a newbie and I know it - but I'm getting there. Learning new things about the game every time I boot it up.

I got matches off the guy, and I found multiple hunting knives and hatchets. That's what I'll do when I get back tonight - head up north and hunt. I know that I'll die eventually (everyone does) but I'm not ready to give up all this gear yet. Thanks. -
New player - I just had my first hostile PvP encounter.

I finally bought Arma 2 yesterday from the Steam sale and I spent most of today running around in Dayz. I took a little break and then went back on later and - wow! DayZ nights are Dark! It impossible to spot loot without your flashlight. You can barely see anything! I've been hearing how hostile players are in DayZ - that most shoot you on sight. I was pleased to see that in the first couple of hours playing DayZ, I had 3 pretty good human interactions. The first followed me around a bit, and then took off, the second was running down a hill I was at the bottom of and, when he spotted me, turned around and ran back up it. The third came into a hanger I was looting, let me finish, took a look at what was left, then followed me around for 5 minutes before running off somewhere. I made an observation, though. None of these players had any gear. They didn't even have any weapons. While I was coming out of a building I had just looted, I saw a flash a little bit off (It was really bright in the pitch-black) and I dropped to the ground. This decked out guy with a ghille suit and a huge rifle runs by me (didn't see me - I was right under him) and runs into the building I just came out of. I get up, and run around the back to get a better look at him. As I step into the back entrance, I just see a flash at the end of the hallway, and I go down. So, I guess I'm just wondering, is it usually the more decked-out players that are more hostile? Because they want to protect their gear? I was having pleasant interactions with all of the just-spawned survivors, but the first decked-out player I met put me down the second I walked through the door. I guess I know now to not follow experienced players. I should have just walked away. They'll just put me down and not even bother looking through the gear I spent all day gathering. It's a great mod, though. I'm not even mad that hours of gear were just wiped out in a split second. I'll just get it all back tomorrow! -
IF this was an actual game...

Definately one time purchase. I want to play other mmo's, but don't because I refuse to pay a monthly fee for a game. -

Honestly? I should have just gone prone right outside the door, because I just wanted to see if he would drop any gear for the stuff that was inside. Maybe he would have dropped something good for a few bandages. I just wanted to get pickings on whatever he left behind. And, I think that he did have nvg's, though because I still have no idea how he saw me coming through the door. There was a zombie chasing him - maybe he ran past me the first time just trying to get away from the zed? -

Yeah, I guess that I get that. You spend all that time getting gear and surviving, if someone is loitering around you with a gun and not responding, put him down. This guy was just being a jerk, though. I was about 30 feet away with only a hatchet out. I couldn't even see him. It was just complete darkness and then a flash from one of the corners in the hallway. Oh well, it's an online game, I'm gona get people like that... -

That's what I figured. I guess that I'm a little disappointed. I thought that maybe all of the "everybody is hostile" talk was over exaggeration, but it doesn't bolster the resolve to see that my fist encounter with an armed player, and he put me down without a second thought. Oh well, back to DayZ...
