Experimental Branch: 0.48 Discussion
hells high replied to Super_Duty's topic in PC Experimental Updates
Uhh yeah they are running persistence testing on Experimental, have been for a while. -
KOS implies shooting someone immediately. Trying to communicate has usually lead to the people I'm trying to talk to going silent and either hunting me down or waiting to ambush me. I tend to hide from anyone with a weapon, nobody really needs your help in DayZ, things are too easy to get.

does anyone find the crossbow underpowered
hells high replied to hellzbro's topic in General Discussion
I tried to kill 2 zombies with it and was severely beaten. Maybe some more practice but I'd rather use an axe or a firearm. -
One of my friends seems to like getting one shot by zombies. What was your status like? Was your screen blurry (indicating low health) or was your screen desaturated (indicating low blood)? What sort of clothing were you wearing? A couple times I've noticed that desync can cause zombie hits to build up, so a zombie swings and misses on my screen, then swings and hits and its almost like I was hit twice. Could just be me though.

What clothing set/weapons would you add if you could?

People forget that we live in a globalized and modern world, and that these countries aren't 50 years behind in both tactics and equipment. -
Chatacter wipe next stable build(.49) possible

That might be the most original defense for duping your gear I've ever heard. You are actually rationalizing exploiting a bug that lets you magically create new entities of your items? You are doing that right there, in that post? Oh man.- 143 replies

Experimental Branch: 0.48 Discussion
hells high replied to Super_Duty's topic in PC Experimental Updates
Its hard to rely on gunshots 100% of the time. Often my friends will shoot a deer or something just to mess around, and all you hear is the "sss -thud-" and it sounds like we are being sniped. This is something that will likely be worked on when a dedicated effort is put into the sound engine. Hopefully they'll take some inspiration from other projects doing indepth sound work. -
Yup, with new loot being added all the time, plus the recent new implementation of the respawning system you have to expect that it won't be perfect yet. Plus in a recent interview Chris Torchia mentioned that a simple, small error caused the SMERSH vest to not spawn. It happens. :) Good work on the research as well. Honestly one of the biggest issues is duping, its really hard to tell exactly how the loot is working when dupers with packs full of 75 round drums are roaming the military bases.

Nope actually the 240 is about 12.3 kg while the PKM weighs in at around 7.5 kg.
-
Oh man, I wanna chop the rear section off a multicoloured Lada and mount a PKM on that bitch. Although its worth noting that the PKM is one of the lightest weapons in its class, its not uncommon to see soldiers shoulder firing it at enemy positions.

Its a known bug acknowledged in the patch notes. -
"persistence enabled" servers = new character slot?
hells high replied to Stafftiner's topic in General Discussion
Same regular character for me. The persistence servers are a test run, they hope to push it to the rest of the stable servers (including hardcore) by the end of August. -
How does one go about joining the dev team as an apprentice?
hells high replied to billyangstadt's topic in General Discussion
From their jobs page. Unfortunately most companies are looking for skilled multi-talented individuals with years of experience in the industry. If you can find a company willing to do an internship that would probably be a fantastic foot in the door. A lot of game developers start out as free content creators who show that they have a passion and a love for doing their thing, just keep working on your craft, building your portfolio, shopping your talent around, and most importantly NEVER STOP LEARNING. Your more basic items are pretty good, fully mapped and textured. The Glock however has a lot of very bizarre geometry and very little function aside from trigger movement. I'd suggest watching a lot of various tutorials, modelling basics, or even just someone that recorded themselves working on a project. Self teaching can only go so far when the systems are designed to work a specific way, and polygons have a lot of nuances that you need to be familiarized with. The best learning I ever did was watching various artists go through the motions, talk about the problems they were encountering, and discussing how they were going to solve them. Take tutorials that say "How to model a Glock" or something not straight forward (there won't be tutorials for every single item you want to make), but as a learning opportunity to see how that person works their way through a model. Best of luck, never stop practicing and never stop learning! -
The first tent my friends and I tried to place was bugged or something. We deployed it randomly in the trees just to test it out. We were unable to pack it back up after emptying the contents out again.

There's a very interesting bug with the loot respawning systems happening. All these items spawn exactly where the other did, so it looked like one item. But when you looked in vicinity or spread them out it became apparent how many items there actually were. My friend and I found a box of 5.56 in a UAZ that did the exact same thing. I think we spread it out in the ground and found it was about 15 boxes. Same thing happened with an AK101 mag, or so we thought it was just one. We went to Chapaevk and killed a whole lot of zombies.
-
Right here I guess, chasing my newspawn buddy out of Solnichniy. Walk into Chapaevsk and kill one zombie with your firearm. My friends and I like to go there if we have a bit of extra ammo and feel like having a good time, if not a tense one. Good place to test your marksmanship if you aren't super into shooting players when you don't need to.
-
How many ammo do you carry?
hells high replied to HeroAtDay BanditAtNight's topic in New Player Discussion
I usually carry 1 mag in my main and sidearm gun plus two extras for each in my pack. Then I usually have an ammo can filled with mostly primary ammo, sometimes more secondary if I'm shooting zeds. Sometimes I'll carry a bit of extra 7.62x51 if one of my group is using a Mosin. -
I experience a lot of these "leg explosions". Usually in buildings near objects, but sometimes they occur in open rooms. Before the latest patch, my legs would break, my boots would become ruined, the pants too, and every item in them. Recently though my boots and pants have become ruined, but the items have sustained minor damage. Its very bizarre, because it only seems to happen to me, while my friends entering and leaving the same rooms at the same time with the same items on the ground don't. I think a select few of us are cursed. :P

You sure are pulling that card all over the forums today, taking up a new hobby? You appear to be confusing experimental with some kind of alpha test and the stable branch as some kind of finished product. Experimental is the place where radical changes happen regularly and the team can test major changes in a public gameplay setting. This doesn't mean its going to be bug free and polished to perfection when it hits stable branch, its still a testing branch after all. You click "I Agree" to that every single time you launch the game. Don't like it? Wait until the game comes out. Back on topic: On a persistent server (in the name it will have "Persistence: ON" and a name like "DayZ NY 2-16" to indicate it is an official server with persistence) my friends and I had looted a military base, dropping various items we didn't require or swapped out. Later that day, after a fair period of gameplay and a few restarts, we had returned to the base and found a few of the items still there. Whether or not the items that were missing were looted by other players or degraded in some fashion is unclear. However it does appear to work on these servers in some capacity. Persistence is undergoing stress tests, on both stable and experimental. The reason persistence is limited to official servers is because they are expecting bad things to happen when the multitudes of public players try and save their stashes of precious loot. That is a lot of data to keep track of, and a lot of stress on servers. I haven't had a chance to test item persistence across multiple days yet.

DayZ is literally unplayable at the moment
hells high replied to private-pile's topic in General Discussion
I've logged back into the same server after a reset without this issue. What kind of servers are they? Hardcore or Regular? Persistent enabled or not (meaning official BI servers or not)? If not is it a specific provider that you are logging into? And most of all is it stable or experimental? Instead of telling the OP that its testing try helping to figure out why, you know, like testing. -
Can someone translate? The road sign is in a strange language...

Take a gander at the first post again. -
Just spitting ideas here, what if its a precurser to items being able to become dirty? The same way the new bandanas are able to be done up as face masks as that feature came available? I'm also thinking the recent removal of rotten fruit could be a precurser to fruit rotting over time. This of course is speculation, just spitballing. I like that these kinds of things are being added, though personally I don't use it as the colour of the burlap sticks out too much and covers the iron sights. The model could be improved as an artist finds time (as it covers the rifle's action completely), and the functionality could be added to other weapons which would be sweet. Have you never wrapped anything cylindrical before? You don't need to attach it, friction of the fabric on itself holds it in place. You should also try considering with the high fidelity of other assets that this is a placeholder item. Take a step back, and relax. Chris Torchia is the art lead, meaning he very likely has a hand in all the assets in the game. He also appears quite aware of how firearms work. Stating an opinion without going on the offensive is possible, please try it in the future.

Tents not spawning in stable (hardcorde/ "first person"-mode)
hells high replied to timedance's topic in General Discussion
Keep looking. I've found one they are there. -
Servers will have "Persistence: ON" in the server name if they have persistence enabled. Just filter for that in the "host" area.
