At work when suddenly, DayZ happens......
hells high replied to Ineedscoffee's topic in General Discussion
I always figured it was common for people to test batteries with their tongues, or people at least got tricked into it once as a kid haha. The DayZ forums are showing me that I may have been in the minority. -
My entire group just died... and there weren't even bandits or zombies.

Super easy to farm, with kills or suicides.

For the record there's a ton of other things to consider than simply the v-ram recommendation of an alpha build.

Have you set up any custom launch options? When launching anything on this engine you should be doing that. (first one I found on google) -> http://dayzintel.com/dayz-standalone/dayz-standalone-performance-guide Try turning off your bloom, post processing, blur, and AO. Doing that should allow you to up your other settings and help your FPS. Also I've never owned an AMD, but Nvidia has a control panel where you can force more efficient forms of AA and AO. I use those to get the visual fidelity back while maintaining performance.

Logged out in house, fell trough floor and now im stuck!
hells high replied to kim's topic in Troubleshooting
Hide in a pine tree or bush and log out, there's generally something nearby. Logging in at towns and cities is dangerous anyway. There's a period where your character is standing there as you load in, and zombies or players can easily gank you while you sit there. -
I offered a new spawn some food, started dropping it on the ground and he started punching me in the face. I pulled out my Mosin and shot him 3 times. Before that all experiences had been good.

Why all this "need hunting rifles not sniper rifles"?
hells high replied to DevilDog (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Because when people talk about sniper rifles they are usually referring to .50 cals, SVDs, Interventions, and other mili-cool shit like that. This isn't an ARMA mod anymore. Remington 700's and M40's are the same thing by the way. The M40 is a modified 700 hunting rifle that is specially modified with aftermarket components, threaded barrels, and stuff like that. -
Which DayZ Standalone resources do you use?

I have iZurvive on my tablet. Lets me and my friends plot points, plus I don't have to have other windows open. -
The very first kill. Do you remember yours?
hells high replied to skoms's topic in General Discussion
60 hrs and I've just killed my first player. I was down at Solnichniy handing out food after a trip West. All was good, even gave away an empty kitted up M4. I was headed south on the coast when a fresh spawn came running after me. I turned, waved, said hello and asked if he wanted some food. He said "Yes, yeah give me some food... please." So I tossed it on the ground and started to say "there you go" when he raised his fist and started hitting me in the face. I pulled out my Mosin, backpedaled and put 3 shots into him, picked up my food, and started walking away. -
It would be clever if you didn't just replace "South Park" with "Chernarus", like actually replaced some of the lines with things that related to DayZ.

No gun? Walk up and say hi, ask if they need anything. Gun? Get low, hide, and prepare to return fire. Very rarely have I met someone with a firearm that won't shoot you either for your stuff or out of fear that you will do the same.

I agree with Tizzle. Though I've never grabbed a ballistic helmet I usually wear TTSKO, but I've switched it up a bit just to differentiate my character a bit.

Nope, silencers don't exist; they are called suppressors. A suppressor slows down the gases of an exploding round, reducing yes the muzzle flash but also the sound of the shot (not like in the movies, its still quite audible but isn't very distinctive; making it hard to identify the noise as a gunshot but also identify where the shot came from.) What you are talking about is a flash hider, most combat rifles like the M4 and AK74 come equipped with a flashhider standard. If you didn't have the stock M4 flashhider recoil would be much higher and you'd basically throw a big ass fireball behind your round. Edit: I just noticed Bohannan posted a Hickok45 video, love that dude. :P Its a great video because it very clearly demonstrates what a supersonic round will sound like coming out of a suppressor. You'll notice even it has more punch than the stock DayZ soundeffect.

less M4s in a week... will everyone make a run on them?
hells high replied to unicornsmustdie's topic in General Discussion
Plot twist, you log in and find that your character has actually been wiped because this is an alpha test. -
I thought it might be cool if there was an inertia system, whereby swinging your Mosin around would be a bit slower than a shortbarreled M4 with a vertical grip. I know it probably wouldn't go over well with a lot of players, but it could be a way to make long-guns less ideal for house clearing (unless of course you learn how to clear buildings with them by pre-aiming into your corners, adapt and overcome and all that. ^^)

Firefighter's axe in a backpack, but not an M4?
hells high replied to subliminal_city's topic in General Discussion
Its a gameplay decision, considering this is a video game after all. I'm sure they'll work something out soon with gun bags and whatnot. Realistically you can carry plenty of M4s on your person, especially since they seem to have slings. You could also have it sticking out of your backpack. The space between your back and your backpack, utilizing the straps of said backpack, would be a great place to hang a weapon horizontally with minor discomfort. The notion that this is realistic needs to go away, its for gameplay and it makes sense to me. -
Never was one for stats. Kills, deaths, times, bleh. My character has been alive for so long I'm kind of scared to actually see it in text though.

A lot of people hate to see time and energy wasted, its just the way some of us are wired. I am absolutely that way, and had to work hard to change it in relation to video games like DayZ. As a digital artist I've lost tons of hours of work to corrupted files, crashes, and so on. These still bother me, maybe one day they won't but its hard to change the way your brain works. I have ~60 hours in the standalone with around 3 characters that haven't been murdered at spawn/close by. My current character has been to every major place on the map, and almost every other place. Minor scrapes with other players usually resulting in an apology and a trading of goods, some new friends, all of this becomes a part of your time put into that character. For people like me its not just about the gear you have, truth is I've had the same stuff since a few hours into him. All that time and energy just to go to waste when some guy shoots you a hundred times for no reason and shouts "haha faggot" over direct chat gets to some people. I've come to find the enjoyment and thrill in that, but some people cant. So, they wait for private and PvE servers. Right now I don't THINK they are allowed, but later on its great to have that kind of flexibility for people to play the way they want (as long as they can't come to PvP servers and clean house); that's what makes PC gaming great.

Yeah be sure to post the server so we can, uh, "hunt with you". :P

So why do people refuse being held up?
hells high replied to Mays (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Yeah, read back a couple of pages to my first post and see just how well you explained anything to me. First response to me was an insult and a denial. Second was you telling me to stop acting like a hero.Third was a link to your story thread about holding people up and not killing them. I fail to see any explanation, meanwhile I've explained why people would rather try to defend themselves than let you tie them up for their can of soda and half a can of beans. I've also told you what 90% of holdups result in, as have the majority of posters in this thread. I've also explained why people would rather die in a video game than play along someone that is PROBABLY going to kill them after wasting their time and acting like a douche-bag. Like I've said before, statistically and from personal experience with friends, that is what is going to happen and most people feel the same way. You asked why, I said why. You've given nothing but dead ended insults or rebukes. You're right, we're done with this conversation, but it isn't me that has a problem with understanding. -
Do you dare to give a random a loaded gun?
hells high replied to skoms's topic in General Discussion
You're breaking the first rule of DayZ. Don't get attached to your stuff. Its an interesting experiment, and I'm glad it turned out the way it did. I've given new-to-DayZ-players a bunch of food and medical supplies, along with a few fireaxes and showed them around a bit. Plenty of times I've been at a water pump or eating with them sitting behind me and haven't been axed in the back of the head once. It'd be easy, too. I guess it all comes down to the right person. You could say they were "good people" but its just a video game. Still, its nice to see people act this way in a virtual environment where consequences are meaningless. -
Could DayZ be done better on a different engine?
hells high replied to doctorbadsign's topic in General Discussion
Considering DayZ is meant to play and feel like ARMA I can't see any real benefit to recreating the ARMA feel on an engine that isn't the ARMA engine. -
So why do people refuse being held up?
hells high replied to Mays (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Yes because when someone runs up to you and says "Hey put your hands up" you automatically know that its Mays from the DayZ forums that isn't going to kill you shortly thereafter (like 90% of the rest of the people that say the exact same thing). If you are going to continue to have this discussion (replying is continuing a discussion) at least try not picking out the lines you misunderstand and replying with "oh wow" and "haha". -
So why do people refuse being held up?
hells high replied to Mays (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Are you arguing that playing as a character that is helpful to other players isn't a "hero" character? Are you delusional or just trying too hard? I'm not saying my way is the right way to play DayZ, I'm saying that my way is different and changes the way people play. The way YOU play is the same as every other asshat that ties someone up, steals their gear, then shoots them in the head. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/165282-to-my-guardian-angel-with-a-high-powered-rifle/ You should actually be thankful, if the character I'm playing right now (I change my characters each time, maybe next spawn I'll be a bandit) is helpful and kind, other players are more likely to comply to your "friendly banditry" because they'll see that not everybody gets their giggles from virtual torture and murder.
