    Playing solo is problematic

regarding anti-social behaviour of fellow survivors: there are many threads on this topic, and from what i gathered, this is actually working as intended. as frustrating as it may be, the game is a mirror of human society. as i said to a medic yesterday - i bet for every bandit out there there is a guy who wants to do the right thing. quite a few will try to do the right thing, but will give up because they get betrayed as reward. thats exactly how it is in real life - doing the right thing is often far more difficult and unrewarding than being that selfish bastard. but if you take a look at the medical assistance thread in this forum, you will see that its not all assholes and pvp. and yesterday a bandit posted a thread how he helped someone out - the world of DayZ is not black and white (well, maybe except when you're really low on blood) and its as diverse as the world out there. its remarkably successful as a simulator of people acting under extraordinary circumstances. maybe even better than as a bone-breaking simulator. regarding realism and out-of-game communication: first, you should remember that the game does not strive to be a 100% realistic simulation of a real apocalypse. it uses the military simulation to create a certain, unique setting, with its own rules, which may or may not align with real life. the social dynamics outside of the game are not necessarily bad. often, they complement the game. in a real world, survivors would find other means of communications - sticking small paper notes on street signs, church or hospital doors, writing messages and codes on the walls etc. there are enough examples from real world battlezones. humans are a social species, and an quite inventive, too. the internet communities around games are just another manifestation. and i disagree its severely immersion-breaking, actually i read often some forum stories of fellow surivors after work to get into the right mind setting, into character if you so will, before i play. i stop being the keyboard-wielding research scientist, and become a hatchet-wielding medical courier. when teaming up with one of the meidcs, joining a common teamspeak is not different than joining a common radio frequency. the realism of the military simulator has its limits. i cant pick up a scrap of paper, write somthing down and stick it to the church door. until this is implemented, intenet forums are a valid workaround. that said, surviving solo is possible and a viable style of playing the game, but so is teaming with others using all means neccessary - even those out of game. surviving alone is tougher. and it should be. i myself run mostly alone, as i dont want to be responsible for more than my own death in a place, where average life expectancy is measured in minutes. but i gladly team up temporarily with others, to provide help or to recieve it.
  2. as someone who also only recently joined the ranks of survivors, i would advise you to try to play for yourself a few days, and experience the world unbiased. try to find what you think you like most about this game. there are good guys and bad guys, indiscriminate bandits and elaborate killers, compassionate medics and greedy loot hoarders, zombie hunters and pvp junkies, sneaking through forests or urban warfare.. read the forums a bit, its full of great stories from all kinds of people.. great, moving stories, some sad and some hilarious.. and if you find something you would like to do, its much easier to find likeminded people.. if you're a bandit by heart, then you wont have much fun with friendlies, no matter how nice they might be.. same thing the other way round.. just my two cents :) Cheers from sunny Bremen.

    The hatchet

yay, another opportunity to further my agenda and advocate more melee weapons in the game! :) the hatchet is awesome - imagine if we had lumberjacks axes, cleavers and fence poles.. *sigh*
  4. If i am not mistaken, NL observes Daylight Saving Time as most european countries, so its GMT+2 during summer. But im not a time expert either :)
  5. this is fuckin hilarious... is actually epic. too bad you cant play the game now, since:
  6. no, to my knowledge there is currently no way to know, what time is set on the server. most servers put their timezone setting in the server descritpon, and thats what dayzcommander uses to determine whether its daytime or nighttime - however that info is not always accurate. admins sometimes change the time settings but dont change the description. EDIT: meh, Splinez beat me to it. Cheers.

    Worst Way You Ever Died

spawned just east from the Balota airstrip, sneaked upon the 'deer stands' which serve as watchtowers int he four corners of the military camp.. crawled for like an hour, since the place was swarming with zombies for some reason.. looted three of the four stands, approached the fourth.. found basic equip so far, knife, canteen, watch, food, drinks, various ammo.. what i didnt find was a weapon.. after climbing the fourth stand i see a guy running towards me, kiting the whole Zed festival behind him.. he climbed up to me, looked at me and climbed down again.. i stared for a second, confuzzled.. then the Zeds came marching in..

    WTF!!!

backpack bug is known and well-documented. use the workaround described in the respective threads, other than that remember rule #1: you WILL lose your gear ;)

    PC shuts down during play

sounds like overheating. desktop computer or laptop? check for dust in the cpu cooler if its a desktop, or check the case ventilator in case of a laptop. opening a laptop is not always an easy task, some builds are a pain to open and clean.

    GB #1337 Bandits/Hackers

i would be totally disappointed if a server with the designation #1337 had no scripters on it =) (sorry couldnt resist) i agree with the Bat, being eaten by a door or a tree is much mor traumatizing B)
  13. from what i read so far (i might have missed something) there is currently no way to determine the server time setting. Most servers include the timezone in their servername string (thats the way dayzcommander determines whether its daytime or nighttime), but that info is (from my personal experience) wrong at least 50% of the time.

    More hospitals?

oh no you didn't. nerf-plea in comic sans? that makes me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon twice. i sincerely beg to discard the OP request for obvious reasons.

    Saving fellows on the coast

i give my beans. he did the right thing and was not afraid to admit it. bandits are people too, right?
  16. guns in general should be less common. i propose more melee weapons.
  17. this has nothing to do with grammar, its orthography. capitalization as a form of emphasis is a widespread tradition, especially in print publications. it has recently found increased use in online writing, where orthography and typography are used more creatively. i, personally, write all-lowercase, which is in turn also sometimes annoying for undiscerning, naive, ignorant people who rant on the internet based on other peoples writing style... :).

    Solo play Not Welcome!?!?

you shouldnt assume this is a military simulation, just because ArmA is. Also, realism is not as important as the overall game mechanic. Surviving the apocalypse alone should be significantly harder than in a group - this is working as intended. Survival chances are slim - you WILL die. Often. More often if you are alone. This is working as intended. Everything in the game - rarity of useful items, health/hunger mechanics, being ganked by bandits - serves this core idea. If you are too frustrated with the experienced to enjoy it, this game is probably not for you. By design, it wont appeal to everybody. But for many people, its this challenge, which makes it so uniquely enjoyable in the first place. I play the game for two weeks now, still have to find matches. But i met a medic who traded his steaks for my raw meat, as he had some matches. You can play solo - but your chances of survival may rise if you interact with other. Of course you also may just get shot on sight. This is working as intended. ;)

    Spawning Battleships ?!

Love my job, spending half of the day on the forums lol

    Android/ Apple app

from what i gathered in my short time here, rocket is pretty fond of statistics and there are plans to incorporate web-based player stats. if thats implemented and the login infrastructure allows for web-based authentication, creating a mobile app will be a breeze. authenticating is here the only issue i see, but since stats is a read-only operation on low-volume text data, there shouldnt be a problem. of course, when building networked infrastructure, there ALWAYS are problems. but thats another cake.
  22. this makes me dream of dual-wielding my trusted Rusted Hatched of Bleeding and a Bent Shovel of Infection.... great idea btw. you dont need to change the geometry, just spawn a small interactable pile of dirt on the ground. we need to see improvement regarding placement of objects, other than that it shouldnt be a hassle to implement

War Z are you having a laugh?

you sound exactly like those folks who say that <insert MMO Title> is crap because its not WoW, but WoW is crap now because its not like it was 5 years ago.... I am with rocket on that topic: “I think competition is a healthy thing, and their list of features is ambitious. I’m have been hoping that the gamer response to Day Z has made a few developers, and even a few publishers, raise their eyebrows and question what we consider absolute truths in the industry. Maybe this is the start of that, in that case it is a great thing.” dont be a hater. lets be happy for the renaissance of the zombie apocalypse in popular culture instead. EDiT: the great thing about DayZ is not some feature, or the zombies.. its rockets vision. His adamant commitment to the core concept is what makes this game so unique and ultimately enjoyable.
  24. now if i could have a battleship as stash.. *nerdgasm*
