Gamasutra - May 2013 - Interview with Rocket
Element47 replied to SmashT's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
i read it in Claudia Black's voice... -
the ability to use markers is set server-side, and disabled on many. do you have this issue on every server?
-
from what i read, OP aint bragging, but making a point against the need for high-powered weapons. i tend to agree. also, i once killed two snipers on a motorcycle (and the motorcycle) with one bunny. from nearly one click away.

Element47 replied to jaydupuis25's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
nevertheless beans to good gal Sara for not having lost the faith and still trying to help in "banned for no reason" threads... -
reading the topic i somehow expected tear gas and rocks being thrown. disappoint.

releasing an unfinished product "into the wild" always bears a risk. however, involvement of the potential customer base/user community into the early development can provide very useful insights, allowing to tailor the product for the real-time needs and wishes of the users while at the same time profiting from contstant user feedback of a large user base. the social networking factor additionally provides a public relations vector, allowing to succesfully market a product to the target audience long before its finished. again, minecraft is a very successful example of such a product. there are, of course, risks associated - disclosing valuable info to the competitors, losing novelty factor, creating social media clusterfucks, losing track of development by trying to listen to the community too much, etc.. in the end, it depends on the individual product, market situation, community and company, whether its a good or bad idea to go public at an early develoment stage.. as for DayZ, i think its doing pretty good with its current strategy. and it definitely should take its time rather than rush.

there are no exact stages at which alpha becomes beta, this often differs from project to project. -generally- alpha is considered under active development and not feature-complete, while beta is mostly feature-complete but needs bug- and stress-testing.. major bugs may still lead to larger changes.. EDIT: as you see, there is no consensus :D in my understanding, one of defining points of an alpha is, that its not feature-complete. if your code contains all planned functionality, you can enter beta-testing to test for bugs stability and performance EDIT.2: also, you cannot name a fixed timeframe between alpha and a rc or final version, as this obviously depends on how successful you are in the develpment and bugfixing. persisting issues can prolong development phases.. Minecraft was in alpha for 1 1/2 years, beta was another year until a milestone release was presented as final stable.

Can you die in green field?
Element47 replied to mraidanpreston's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
the "debug plains" are actually part of the map. if you have enough drink and food, you _could_ run back to chernarus, if you run constantly east, it will take several hours though. i havent yet managed to survive the plains, i always died from hunger and dehydration before reaching the "official" part of the map, but i know other people had the luck of spawning there with enough provisions to make the run. it is however not an easy task, and usually its better to log out and log into another server, which most probably will spawn you at one of the default spawn points -
Theres obviously a communication Issue
Element47 replied to BloodShifta's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
you cant fix stupid. Multiple bans means: he either uses hacks, or he buys his game keys from shady sources which sell keys multiple times, or his computer is malware-infested and thus his keys stolen and then in turn sold to hackers. also, DayZ is not being developed by a company, and the developers are not earning money from it. Your money-grabbing argument is invalid. -
you never have enough stuff but i only download biodegradable quality porn from a certified regional provider, so never had any issues. maybe this should be added to the list too...

I would love to see specific graphics settings locked
Element47 replied to UVF Reece's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
why do i even bother, OP deserves nothing more than a facepalm pic.. nevertheless: beside the valid points already mentioned here against that idea, if you cannot conf the settings according to the performance of your machine, you will have people with lower-end machines suffer from performance issues and thus be at a disadvantage, you thought about that? -
knowing your bearing will finally make the compass useful....

How do you feel about donation bonuses?
Element47 replied to colekern's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
donation perks have no place. mind, i am not opposed to micro-transactions for cosmetic items as part of the financial model of the SA. but it has no place in community-run servers. its fine if you as a player want donate to the people who run your fav server to support them. but not if you expect special treatment for it. do they? i run a few dedicated servers, on which i host Trackmania Nations, Warsow, TF2 and HL2DM gameservers, plus TS3 servers for a few clans. I would host DayZ if there were proper linux server files. its part of my gaming hobby, my passion, and hence my expenses. others do spend similar amount of money on parties or other leisure activities. i used to spend much more on sex, drugs n rock'n'roll in my youth than i do now on servers. i do not expect others to pay for it. it doesnt have to be a single person who pays for a server, it can be a clan, or a bunch of friends, who band together and agree on sharing the costs. but you shouldnt expect your players to pay for your server. and you shouldnt entice donations through perks. thats my understanding of "community-run" servers. -

...and if you used morphine you would enjoy some dreams instead of having instafixed broken bones blood bags (and broken bones + morphine) are representatives of a gameplay mechanic using assets from the original game this mod is based on. they are not entirely literal. just like broken bones symbolize an "immobilized" status, and morphine is the agent to counter that status, are blood bags representative of a healing item, with added mechanic that it needs to be applied by another person than the patient himself. there is nothing you need to "force" - you can harvest meat easily, just running past an animal, hatcheting it, there is no effort or challenge involved - if anything, implement a mechanic which makes animals flee so you need to actually hunt and shoot them properly instead of just walking up to an animal and "harvesting" it..
-
first, let me say i dont see blood bags as literal blood bags. to me, they are symbolic representatives of the healing mechanic, like medpacks or healing potions in other games. that said, i can see several possible venues for improvement. i disagree with you on two important points though: 1. i am absolutely in favor of the two-player mechanic, in which it needs another player to successfully apply a healing item and a healing procedure to the patient. 2. i am absolutely in favor of concentrating medical supplies in certain regions, thus effectively creating traffic to that points. military, medical and industrial loot spawns are beacons, waypoints of routes on the map.. spreading everything evenly will break the dynamic.. good multiplayer maps are not boringly equal in every place - they guide players on routes to create encounter dynamics - and thats an important function of the hospitals..
-
aesthetics, not prostethics! unlockable skins seem pretty easy to accomplish.. and they should not carry over. people do not care about dying because they can regear within an hour or even less.. if you however unlock that cool skin for your hatchet or you got that beard or that cool hero scarf for your char, and you know you go back to that noob look again once you die, people would actually start to care about surviving instead of playing instagib with their AS50s in elektro gameplay-affecting unlocks though are a big no-go
-
1. go for industrial spawns to pickup an axe (and maybe a windscreen or two) 2. depending on spawnpoint, plan a route north with general stores and deerstands as waypoints. Focus: map, hunting knife, matches, tents, possibly compass for the luxury not having to look up to the clouds.. (did i mention windscreens?) 3. depending on spawnpoint and resulting route, hit NWAF and Stary or NEAF and Bere (there might be rifles.. and windscreens) 4. usually one to two hours passed now since i spawned, and i'm decently geared. depending on my plans for the evening, either tour highvalue industrials for vehicle parts or hospitals for medical supplies or airfields and heli crash sites for highvalue military loot. en route check vehicle spawn points and typical hideout places, find vehicles to repair and then utilise them for further supply&logistics ops.. (you never know where you find a windscreen) 5. dump loot in a cache, resume scavenging.- you never have too many windscreens
-
hmm.. i didnt know i was such a rare specimen.. i am mostly friendly, i play the game not for the PvP but for the survival and scavenging (i am a loot whore deep in my heart, if i founded a clan, it would be called "Your Inventory is Full") and i dont avoid hotspots. i run around with my hatchet, benny hill theme playing in the back of my head, around in bere, cherno or elektro, always on the lookout for "moar lewt" - especially those gorgeous, shiny windscreens... i also run around the plains and look for heli crash sites.. not because of the guns, but because hatcheting the pilots is fun and they might drop NVGs which i could give away or trade for windscreens.. and as for the SA, i hope for two things: massively higher PvE difficulty, and - you guessed it - massively moar lewt! PvPers? i dun care for them.. sometimes they kill me, sometimes i kill them.. after all, its dayz :D i really, really would love to see ammo of ANY kind become as rare as high-grade military weapons are now.. where every single bullet is worth a dozen full jerry cans or half a dozen windscreens...
