When are larger servers being brought in?

working as intended, i'd say. i'd be complaining if postapocalyptic countryside would be busting with people like rush-hour new york.
  3. so... i haz returneth from ze holidays. since i finally managed to purchase the SA after the financial clusterfuck called christmas season, i also spend more time here on the forums again. my impression so far: game is great, but did the "Stop KoS" threads just explode? is there a raised awareness regarding murderous playstyles? do we have more players again who do not follow the path of the sociopath? i mean, im not complaining. higher diversity of the player base is great, and since high-pop vanila mod servers often resulted in spawn-kill-die-respawn loops, having more players who actually care about their character is wonderful. the kill-die-respawn mentality was horrible for the medic business.. so, has there really been a shift in the community, maybe through influx of new players? whats your thoughts and experiences so far important notice: please discuss percieved change in community and player base towards KoS playstyle, do not discuss pros and cons of the playstyle itself, we have enough threads discussing this already
  4. i dont understand what you're talking about. to me, having an axe means being fully geared.
  5. +1 for a sanity meter - as long as being insane does not put you at a disadvantage towards sane players

PvE Server - Killed by a Human

oh i agree that people enjoy different things. i absolutely love infinite diversity in infinite combinations. but if someone does not enjoy open world pvp, maybe he should not turn to a game, where open world pvp is at the core of gameplay design. people have different tastes. but if you order a Cuba Libre, expect it to contain alcohol and lime. If you dont like either, maybe you should just order a Coke from the start.

    System to Punish KoS

no single playstyle should be specifically punished by game mechanics. and judging by the comments in threads about KoS, 80% of the community wants to hug&kiss anyway. seriously though, the interaction dynamics are what makes this game so enjoyable. i remember when everybody was crying out loud about killings and hostility in the mod, and Doc Wasteland suddenly singlehandedly changed the metagame by going out and healing people, against all odds. the community response was immense, and suddenly everybody and his aunt wanted to become a medic, or a medic bodyguard. as evidenced by the overwhelming negativity towards people who dare to consider KoS a valid playstyle, there is more than enough players who are not murderous bastards. maybe its not as horrible as some butthurt rump-rustled tushy-tantrumed players want us to believe

PvE Server - Killed by a Human

As someone who has been gaming online since you could dial into MUDs with a 300 baud modem: people my age (40+) are the least mature players ever

PvE Server - Killed by a Human

i disagree. one of the core mechanics of this game is the danger of other players. learning how the game works means learning how to survive - survive the elements, survive the infected, and most of all survive the hostile (or as i call them 'potential friendly') players. i am a carebear, i shoot back only when i was shot at first. but i would not play this game if there was no danger of hidden snipers or trigger-happy random encounters.. the threat of people killing you on sight - or backstabbingly killing you after they chatted with you and pretended to be friendly - is what makes the friendly encounters so valuable and enjoyable.. people like KoS or ZedsDead are the spice that makes my carebearing enjoyable. and i am grateful for that. learning to live - and enjoy - it, is learning to play DayZ, and this should be experienced from the start.

Hacker just Teleported me to middle of water.

30 minutes? when i was young, we ran 5 hours from debug plains to kamenka, just to be killed by the bridge catapult. #getoffmylawn seriously though, i agree there should be a suicide&respawn mechanic for the purposes of alpha testing..

Airfield loot ruins this game. Please Read

and ever since people have complained about the overabundance of military loot and had high hopes that the SA would bring a change. loot system needs a lot of love in the future anyway.. i dont mind the current availability as stuff needs testing, but later development stages should see military/high quality arms become very rare and spawn spots become less predictable
  12. Element47

    Stop changing spawns until....

it may surprise you, but loot system and spawn points both are WIP.. that said, i actually think that spawning all players on top of each other in picked-dry high-traffic areas might provide valuable data, namely what routes the players take after the most obvious areas are sans loot, and how different spawn locations influnce the map flow full disclaimer: author loves walks on the beach and hiking trips in the hills, and spawning at solnichny was the best experience he had since meeting his wife

    Realistic version of a Radar.

you tell me, in my post it even forgot how to fontsize :D i agree that signal triangulation is possible with more crude methods, but it will have a severe impact on precision.
  15. Element47

    Realistic version of a Radar.

well, i tried to analyze what you'd really need for a system you propose: - a well-engineered (means high-quality engineering, not bending a bicycle fender) antenna array (this means multiple antennas) for optimized reception in the exended 2-meter band and the lower UHF frequency, combined with a digital compass and GPS reciever - a software-defined radio (SDR) consisting of an RF fronend, analog-to-digital converter and programmable processor backend. For our purposes, the SDR must be capable of processing signal detection and direction-finding data for thousands of distinct RF channels located over tens of MHz of bandwidth. - RF reciever, signal processing components, and wifi communication components - robust networking system which allows operators to network with one another and share information. you'd need at least three units for precise geolocation - a computing unit running the dedicated software and of course its not enough to have the parts, they need to interface each other and run the highly complex software which, as classified military material, isnt usually found on random laptops in rural chernarus

    Realistic version of a Radar.

the wolfhound system is nothing you can weld out of two tin cans and a radio. it uses military-grade transmitters and recievers, specialized antenna arrays and combines them with complex alogorithms and networking to create a deployable triangulation solution, mobile enough to fit in backpacks. its high-tech well beyond whart is available in chernarus.

  19. maybe im totally wrong, but either me or some of you slightly misunderstand the purpose of admin tools. though i have not admined DayZ, i did so for other games, thus, what i would like to see from an admin tool (in general), from the top of my head, would be: - obviously the default functions: start, graceful shutdown, kill, restart, maintenance mode etc. - CPU (Core) Load monitoring - GPU Load monitoring on a second thought, probably irrelevant for the SA as the server app probably wont utilize serverside GPU acceleration - Network Load/Bandwidth monitoring - HDD Load/Space monitoring - secure user management incl. granular user priviledges (regarding admin interface access, not players) - File Management - Profiles for conf files - update manager - detailed log management incl. the ability to create custom filters (regex!), save logs for a customizable amount of time or space - granular player access control: provisions for multiple access lists based on diverse parameters: GUID, IP range, Client version, latency etc. - ideally a secure scripting API to enable custom-written 3rd party plugins/tools like for example status monitoring/emergency shutdown/restart from mobile OS those are a few that come to my mind.. as for those features cited above as "power tools" prone to be abused: those are sometimes the same tools to empower server admins to fight exploits. but as i have not the slightest idea how the servers in the SA actually work, i cannot make any prediction in this regard

    medic bloke off the forums

been there, seen that, got shot at. this is actually a typical story from the medic training book. a situation every medic should count in. to avoid it, dont go solo. have control over the area. place one or two snipers on overwatch, who are ready to neutralize the patient if he chooses to betray you. and of course, as kichi stated - dont heal people who are dicks from the start :) i read better stories from you, LHE, but thanks anyway for posting this prime example as a warning to all aspiring medics. also, if a patient turns on you - dont rage. its unprofessional. edit: also - most medics i know heal people no matter if they're heroes or bandits. most bandits i met have in turn the honor to respect the neutrality of the medic. i acknowledge the fact that as a chosen murderer and sociopath, you do not follow such concepts or have any regard for them - but the carebear in me cannot condone such deeds, so no beans for your story this time.

a study of the carebear (ursus cura)

seriously, no looting tents, gear refund if shot as server rules? such a server shouldnt be advertised as DayZ on the server list. But it was, so Its not "some random Arma II PvE mod" we are talking about. But as you said, its between him and the server, and imho not the main subject of this thread. it cannot be denied that his stories are enjoyed by bandits and carebears alike. from what i see, he really adds value to the forums with his stories. This is the very essence of the bandit campfire, stories of ruthless, vile conduct, making carebears gasp in shock and horror and gritty killers nodding in approval. full disclosure: author is fulltime carebear medic playing main hive, who doesnt shoot people even at NWAF.

a study of the carebear (ursus cura)

if you really want to open that can: non-pvp servers isn't the way the game was meant to be played. but who are you or me to judge, how people should play? i am a carebear yet still enjoy LHEs posts more than your constant attempts at telling others how they should play.

  24. beans for a humble, polite, well written help request. glad to hear your problem has been sorted. NEVER be afraid to ask for help - or ask anything for that matter. not asking is the dumb way. Welcome to the community - its always good to see new people find their way into Chernarus - and welcome to DayZ. (oh, and dont get attached to your gear)
