DayZ is NOT fun for new players, which makes me worried.
Element47 replied to Murakamo's topic in General Discussion
just because you can kill the player next to you, doesnt mean you have to. there is a ton of fun to be had without shooting each other, and i experienced a lot of it in the mod, and look forward to do so in the standalone. i am a carebear medic, i dont shoot people if i dont have to, and i still enjoy it. that said, i really hope the future will see PvE elements introduced that pose real threats to players - but only in addition to the current no-rules open world. i would love to see toxic storms that force everybody who is in the open seek shelter, mutated bears that can rip apart an armed platoon, quicksand and swamps that suddenly swallow you etc. but all this without taking away the tension that the player next to you can turn on you anytime, that the player who just pulled you out of the quicksand only did so to kill and rob you -
more makeshift weapons. as crappy as Dead Island was, the makeshift weapons were kind'a neat. other than that, i'd subscribe to the list of Bakercompany above me, but make ammo very limited

DayZ is NOT fun for new players, which makes me worried.
Element47 replied to Murakamo's topic in General Discussion
in case it hasn't been mentioned yet: DayZ is not for everyone, its meant to be harsh and unfogiving. Oh wait, you knew that much already? seriously though - one of the main attractions of DayZ is that it does not hold your hand, that it does not gate content according to player level, that it is painful and frustrating if you're out of luck. all this makes those times when you succeed so much more rewarding. and the standalone in its current state is extremely easy in comparison to what it is expected to be, for obvious reasons: - loot is over-abundant - zombies infected are more scenery than threat, and extremely few in numbers - threatening conditions like infections, sickness, hypothermia have no effect so far etc. the game currently is set to difficulty level "ouch!" fire is hot?". i expect it to be set to difficulty level "Welcome back, Chuck Norris" when it releases. edit: the game is a sandbox, as you have not a set mission/plot but are free to roam in an open world and do as you wish. open world pvp and sandbox are not exclusive terms. maybe you confuse "sandbox" with "crafting" or "building", as the games you list have a strong focus on that.. GTA as one of the most notable sandbox examples doesnt have crafting or building either.. -
Stuck behind locked door in military base. How do I get out?
Element47 replied to thequantum's topic in New Player Discussion
i glitched in the same (type of) building yesterday, vaulting at the base of the stairs brought me back onto the proper side of the geometry. -
how is customization a sign of immature bahaviour - and how does that relate to CoD in any way? as a medic, i want to be able to wear the medic insignia for everyone to see. its part of the immersion. historically, even in the most dire, lawless environments, groups of people have created insignia and logos to share a common identity or ideal, from the war paints of indigenous tribes, through the jolly roger flags of pirates to the street gang signs of modern urban landscapes

words cannot describe how much i support this request.

What is the Point of the In game Map Now?
Element47 replied to dobrowney's topic in General Discussion
writing annotations on the map that persist between sessions has been suggested numerous times and iirc was positively commented on by the devs. im pretty sure it will come as for dayzdb, it is a great, extensive ressource if you want to take shortcuts - both literally and metaphorically. but its one bigass spoiler. it takes so much away from the experience that i cringe everytime when someone suggests dayzdb to a new player. when i heard about a new military base in the proximity of stary, i actually ran in semicircles around the town till i found it one hour later, all the time with the tension of danger from other potentially hostile scavengers in the area. i could have looked the location up on dayzdb and be there in 3-5 minutes, and lose all that spine-tingling experience of actually discovering it for myself. -
how many of you would kill this player.
Element47 replied to ososensual's topic in General Discussion
i cant wrap my head around "after slowly starving to death somewhere in the middle of the map that nobody goes to" as someone who thrives in the center of the map, its like the shangri-la of chernarus -
yeah, so.. graphics are shit. controls are shit. user interface is... improving from FUBAR to bearable. environment interaction is.. lacking at the least. ok lets be honest, its shit. but the miraculous thing about the game is, that despite all these flaws its amazingly enjoyable. even in its broken, unfinished alpha state it is fucking awesome, it makes me stay up all night till.. let me look at the clock.. its now past ten in the morning and i played all night and didnt even notice that its morning outside.. its that enjoyable. its a work of art created with crude, worn bulding blocks. i wouldnt mind if we had vehicle physics from Forza, cities from Watch Dogs and GTA, environment destruction and UI like in The Division, and voice acting by Johny Depp and Morgan Freeman, with a narrative by Claudia Black. But the core of fun in DayZ is not depending on polygon count, draw distance or texture resolution. Its the player interactions, and the stories that happen in this crazy sandbox. your criticism is valid to a certain point. many things could be easily improved, others are bound to stay... lets say, below their potential. but it doesnt change the fact that its thoroughly enjoyable for many people. could it be better if it was recreated from scratch in a state-of-the-art engine? possibly. would it involve more ressources and time? pretty sure. would it work at all? not guaranteed. i am content for now with the standalone being developed as an organic evolution stage of the mod. do i hope for constant improvement? you bet. i can even imagine a DayZ 2 with all the eye candy and technowizardry expected from a state of the art title. but for now, i'll settle for a fire axe and a can opener.

Rewarding players for actually staying alive and surviving.
Element47 replied to Slyguy65's topic in General Discussion
it comes at a price though, we need to eat 8kg beans every thirty minutes.. -
the current ingame assets are largely a wild mixture of "off-the-shelf" premades from the Arma depository, and custom textures. Most scenery items are russian: police cars, location/road signs, landmarks. Small objects like food/drink items have been adjusted with textures pointing to the czech origins. Of course we are at a point in development, where most art assets are merely placeholders, and devs - rightfully - concentrate on base mechanics. But somewhere in the future game art, textures and assets will need to be consolidated into one direction, and i wonder which that may be. What do you think, what rumours have you heard, what vision do you have for this game, its lore and thus, its art. Will it be a fictional former soviet republic, with the cyrillic script we have come to expect from road signs? will it be a slavic country, modeled after the "České země"? will it be something completely different?

Rewarding players for actually staying alive and surviving.
Element47 replied to Slyguy65's topic in General Discussion
levels are merely milestones within progression. and in my opinion there is no place for character progression within DayZ, no matter how hidden or gradual or 'organic'. thats all it is, my personal opinion . that said, maybe i am wrong. maybe i would love it once its properly implemented, opinions change. maybe you'd hate it once its implemented. all i can say is that currently, i am - humbly, politely but firmly - against the introduction of character progression in this game. -
rule #1: dont get attached to your gear. edit: and welcome to DayZ! :)

every project is different, and so are its development stages. alpha is generally the first stage of testing, and before becoming feature-complete. its usually confined to testing teams. in game development, alpha and early access releases have been used loosely and motivated by diverse agendas. just because the alpha stage of one project actually works, doesnt mean the alpha of another project does. i have been part of projects where alpha code was merely a bunch of source code and libraries, and we had to write our own testbed scripts, as the software had no user interface yet. i have been reconnecting with several people recently to get their feedback on the standalone alpha, and most - not all of course - enjoy it. let me be clear: the game at this stage is not functional. it is not a game. it is a raw piece of software, where future potential can be spotted by those who look closely, but thats about it. the people among my friends who, like me, paid for early access to DayZ did so willingly to support development and be a part of it from the start, well knowing that they might not have a functional game for many months to come. if you, or anyone else, thinks its not worth that, thats perfectly fine. you want features comparable to the mod in its current stage? come back in 2015. until then, this game will face many patches, issues, database wipes, data losses, gamebreaking changes that will frustrate all - players and devs alike.
