    as a cooperative player who only shoots in self defense when shot at (or for science, when conducting medical experiments on Merino) i can attest, that carebearing is perfectly fine on normal servers, no need to cripple the game

    exactly. this means being free to attack other players as well. by restricting a public server to PvE only, you remove that freedom.

    server optimization has been already suggested. we should embrace new ideas instead of repeatedly post the same over and over again. :D i think LifeStraws are a great idea, but should be rare and among military equipment, as its not an everyday item that the average chernarussian farmer keeps stocked in his barn, while i can see it being deployed to troops on emergency response missions in a zombie-virus-apocalypse setting
  7. there is no matter more urgent to me than fixing the abomination that are the controls and environment interaction that the current game has inherited from Arma. but i still have hope that its somewhere in the pipeline. until then, i embrace it as a challenge.

    the 7 SIN of STANDALONE

    admin abuse is the trade off of community-hosted servers. no matter how strict the policing, it will always be reactive. no matter how fast the servers get abandoned by the community, there will always be the next admin that acts far out, and thus will ruin a day or two for some players. its a fact, its been so since the dawn of online interaction, there has always been admin abuse, be it BBSes, MUDs, IRC networks, mailing lists, or more recently all kinds of modern online games. it doesnt really matter if it is a server with its own private hive. but servers connected to the public hive impact everybody playing this game. an abusive admin who kicks strangers to play with his peers will embrace the fact, that strangers do not join his server anymore. he and his group will be able to take advantage of an isolated, "private" server and then join other servers at their leisure, thus creating an unfair advantage. if you or me change every single aspect of our q3a, hl2 or cs server, we do not potentially affect every other player on every other public server. dayz admins on public hive however can create a tremendous imbalance, like securily equipping and transporting a squad to a certain spot within minutes, then joining another server to cause mayhem. we are in agreement here. we will see private hives with its own rules and mods and additions in the future. but official servers need to adhere to certain rules to be able to offer a consisitent service to all players, which is only fair. as for managed hosting becoming the industry standard, i cant really blame them. with the advent of social networks and the shift of video games into the mainstream of entertainment, bad reputation can make or break companies. its understandable, that they want to control every part of the user experience, and managed hosting with large companies allows them to do that. giving out dedicated server files and thus allowing server performance and thus, user experience vary massively is a gamble. i used to host trackmania servers among others, and it was fascinating to witness how two servers on machines in the same rack could offer massively different performance based on the way they were admined. i knew people who ran fxp sites on the same machines they ran their gameservers, you can imagine how network performance varied there.

    limited variety, increased amount. once there are thirty or fifty items in a particular loot table instead of one or two, there will be a difference. currently the items exist purely for testing purposes, balancing loot will probably not begin well after feature-completion, means next year in the beta

    what happened here?

    remote two story site sounds like the backpack factory near polana. the place to go from the solnichny spawn if you dont intend to stick to the coast. it has decent loot and a water pond behind the site.. its also conveniently located between berezino and sobor, so its imho a pretty good spot.. attracts all kind of ppl

    #1 combat logging - will be solved by logout delay #2 server hopping - will hopefully be reduced by a consecutive login delay #3 gamma cheating - can be tackled, but i doubt its a real issue #4 ghosting - will hopefully be reduced in conjuction with server hopping #5 hacking - can be massively reduced by limiting client priviledges and access to world data, but probably never completely go away #6 gear duping - can be easily tackled #7 admin loot cycle restart player kick abuse - admin abuse will remain as a trade off for community-hosted servers
  18. i am actually intrigued by the tales of Balota by now, as i haven't been there yet (in the SA). I think i'll give all my stuff to the next player i meet, and go to Balota wearing only a orange raincoat and a black ushanka

    there is a singleplayer mod of the dayzmod. i sincerely doubt there will be an official SP/offline mode of the standalone

    character animation transition

    everything i see at current stage is more or less directly imported from arma2 - from weapon draws to ladder actions. as stated in a thread next door, i really, really hope those are merely placeholders, and properly coded, DayZ-appropriate things are coming.

    melee key and handcuff change

    i really hope that the majority of controls and environment interactions will be coded anew properly, instead of importing the current placeholder (god i hope those are merely placeholders) horrors from arma 2. a proper melee action with whatever you are currently holding in hands would be great, as well as being able to climb things like 30cm high railway platforms instead of having to run 300m around them.. would also open new possibilites like bashing a can against a rock to open it. or actually jumping from a platform into a train car instead of "ladder climbing" across a currently deadly 20cm gap
