there are two reasons for me to hop. - pitchblack night, as most graphical issues are then not visible - joining friends - thanks to the wonderful "join game" feature of the steam friendlist

inb4 graveyard. you complain about stability, but ignore the fact that the game is in early development stage, thus unstable, broken and incomplete. you complain about ruthless pvp, but ignore the fact that ruthless pvp is one of core aspects of the game. you complain about death and gear loss, but ignore the fact that a.] persistant storage is on the confirmed feature list and b.] permadeath is a core aspect of the game.

Could DayZ be done better on a different engine?
Element47 replied to doctorbadsign's topic in General Discussion
the key is experience. everyone involved has experience with RV and ArmA. A team experienced with Unreal or Unigine could probably implement the basic concept within a year or two in the respective engine. but i think another question resulting from this discussion could be: could the game be done better in RV if it were to abandon its ArmA legacy? i think so. And maybe we will see it in future. -

Trusted Medics of the Wasteland offer training in the trade, available to everyone, not only TMW personnel, if you're interested in more in-depth experience. just post a training request at http://tmwdayz.com/ if you want to assist people in the SA, you should definitely check (TMW)Merinos video guides (if you havent already) to brief you on the mechanics of health, nutrition, blood and poisoning, those are pinned in the New Player Discussion subforum and offer invaluable info

Combat Logging - Massive Game Killer for DayZ
Element47 replied to crusader_111's topic in General Discussion
15 minutes combat flag timer. if a player logs out while combat flag active, his character remains in game, visible and attackable, until end of timer. of course, we'd need reliable means to determine whether a player entity is in combat or not. so, what could trigger combat state? after given this issue some thought, i think one possible approach could be the relative visibility: if a weapon is used while a player entity is rendered on screen, the source player and any player he is able to see recieves/refreshes combat flag. (maybe additionally any character that is within 30m range but beyond FOV) 15 minutes work fine in EvE Online, which features ruthless PvP. If you took part in a heated firefight at one of the hotspots, 15 minutes is by chance approx the time you'd need to find a safe logout spot in some foliage. Would probably help with ghosting too. as a medic, i suffer less than more combat-oriented players from this awfully cowardish plague. but a plague it is, and it needs to be addressed, as soon as balancing combat becomes an important issue on the agenda. but i am not in support of the "gief feature X nao" mentality. the issue is important, the amount of discussions - and the passion in them - show it clearly. thus i am absolutely convinced that the dev team is aware of it, and how important it is to the player base. i am sure they will react accordingly. -
judging from OPs posts (and what else is there to base an opinion on) i am perfectly confident, that if OP purchases the game in its current state, he will be massively disappointed by its current level of stability and feature-completion.

Could DayZ be done better on a different engine?
Element47 replied to doctorbadsign's topic in General Discussion
you should realize that none of the things you listed are connected to the type of engine used. as you can use the Unity Engine to create open world games like Rust or a card game like Hearthstone, you could as well use RV to create a bunnyhopping fastpaced actionshooter like Quake, or a car racer for that matter. with modern streaming tech, there is barely a limit on the region size this. -

not a better engine. a better game using a different engine. yes, the game could be much better on a different engine. and it could probably be much better on the same engine if the ArmA code and assets would be completely abandoned and the game coded from scratch. map size is often cited, but thats bs. look how well Just Cause 2 performs in multiplayer, with a much larger map, with much more players, using the old Avalanche Engine. Unigine Engine for example (which powers simulation and visualisation software apart from different games) has all the modern eye candy and physics plus the streaming capabilities to create immense multiplayer worlds. but DayZ started as ArmA mod, and everybody involved is used to working with RV and ArmA and using ArmA assets, so DayZ will in the end look like ArmA. im not happy about it, but i can live with it. -

you must have misunderstood me. logout timer IS coming, and i embrace it. i, in fact, am in favor of a solution similar to EvE Online, with a 5 minute timer when engaged with environment (i.e. fired a shot or noticed by a zombie) and 15 minutes when engaged with a player, a solution which seems to create an outrage by many. i just oppose the approach of "gief fix nao!", as balancing individual combat gameplay is not a priority atm. we have serious issues with server performance, synchronisation and world geometry, which have a much higher priority imo. -
Friend Tracker, Friendly Marker

exactly. as stated in the multiple threads tackling this or a similar issue, we do not wear any friend-or-foe-identification transponders. you have, like in reality, account for your squad and like in reality, friendly fire will occur in heated encounters. working as intended. please dont dumb this game down with magical holographic indicators. -

half of your post is acknowledging that at this point in development gamebreaking issues may persist and important features may be missing. the other half is contradicting the first, by demanding instant fixes so you can -enjoy- the game, ignoring the fact that there is a set roadmap for a reason. -
With literally nothing spent on marketing the game – “We haven’t spent a single dollar” – the game is a true viral success.

really friendly encountrers are like epic loot. they are rare, but they are worth all of the risk, because if you finally find one, its a story you enjoy long after you logged out of the game.

im torn. on the one hand, i like the general concept of little cosmetic perks for players who have been aboard from the start. on the other hand, i am not sure if it fits the special setting of DayZ. -
Did that really just happen? Am I now a inadvertent super Bandit?

sounds like another piece of shit legacy code from ArmA. hope it will be removed soon. -
oh but you ARE having fun. so its all good oh but I by all means want to have KoSing murderers in the game, and oppose any idea of artificially discouraging it. if everybody was friendly, i could as well play Sims. i just find that DayZ is not much of a skill-based shooter compared to others.
