there are several "iron man" threads/suggestions/rulesets by now, its a popular thing. we should condense these efforts one day in one single thread...

The Map is smaller when compared to Day Z Mod's Chernarus
Element47 replied to AG-D.Wright's topic in General Discussion
its much smaller. it fits on my smartphone screen now. running feels faster though now than it did in the mod. -
if taking part in the journey, participating in the test, giving feedback and helping shape this game is not enough for you, thats ok. come back in a year when the gameplay features are close to complete. i wish i had a penny for every "i know its alpha, but <complains about alpha state>" thread.

whether its courage or lunacy, beans to OP for trying to lead a civilised discussion on this controversial topic. and i fully agree, that not using a 3rd partys voip solution makes the experience richer, and more intensive. thats the reason why i prefer to play DayZ solo. improving the ingame voip will surely improve the experience for everyone, but it should be up to tha player to embrace it or not, to decide how far he wants to immerse himself. bad_mojo makes an excellent point of how playing with your friends removes a significant portion of the game, namely being a lost survivor trying to gather his bearings. this is why, imho, voip is on the same level of metagaming as clans and groups. but as i tried to point out in another thread, such meta not only removes experience from the game, it can also add to it. the bookclub, the trusted medics, the trading groups, all this would to this point be not possible without out-of-game meta, and yet it added so much to the game. the game cannot depict a lot of the communication and organisation possible in the real world. the out-of-game solutions make up for some of that, but it will obviously never be perfect.

i was directing this at TEST_SUBJECTs "the way the game mechanics currently are, TP IS necessary." the discussion is tainted. my point is that out-of-game communication of a team in tactical combat has a negligible impact in dayz, a game in which real, tactical team-vs-team play constitutes only a small percentage of the overall gameplay. and i take issue at denouncing everyone who uses 3rd party voip as cheaters, because thats insulting and inappropriate. you want to listen in while a quarrel with my wife who is playing hearthstone? tsk...

the game mechanics cannot - by definition - by ever adequate: on an average evening, i sit in my study, play DayZ and derail threads on the dayz forums in between switchign servers, my wife sits in the living room and plays hearthstone, two or three of my friends living on the other side of the country are playing some game together, and we all talk together on my teamspeak. at the same time i have the TMW teamspeak open in another tab, sitting there in a "poke me if needed" channel so i can react if one of my friends there requires my attention. now tell me how any mechanic in DayZ could substitute this

private hives are the cancer of this game. they have only one positive effect - the feature tends to attract the powertripping primadonnas of immature admins, which in turn improves the overall quality of the public servers
-
you mean the fact that ingame voip will always be insufficient, because it lacks the ability to communicate with people who are not in the game?
-
came here to armchair-moderate topic redundancy, now steaks all ruined it... my 2ct: the topic of pro/contra is IMHO pointless, because i - and many other i know and play with - are on TS to be able to communicate with people ingame and people who are not playing at the same time - the moments where it is deemed exploitable - for combat comms, is maybe 1% of my game time and thus irrelevant for me edit: i disagree. its metagaming - its the same as finding a playing partner, a trade or a medic on the forums. its the same as finding out about what weapons were added in the patchnotes instead of being surprised when finding them ingame. its the same as being in a clan, instead of finding new friends to play with through the game - every life anew

So what is the excuse for the poor performance now?
Element47 replied to scaramoosh's topic in General Discussion
i think that was the "hope" part.... -
So what is the excuse for the poor performance now?
Element47 replied to scaramoosh's topic in General Discussion
as i read recently, Bohemia has stated themselves on several arma 2 and arma 3 issues, that the RV engine suffers from legacy code and will continue to do so as rewriting the whole engine is beyond possibility with the ressources available to BI, so performance will remain suboptimal for the remaining life of the engine. i'm fine with that, i think the team is pefectly capable of creating a unique, enjoyable experience with the tools they have. the great german poet Goethe once wrote: "In der Beschränkung erst zeigt sich der Meister" - which Oscar Wilde referenced in "The Decay of Lying", and translated to: "It is in working within limits that the master reveals himself" and i think there is much truth to that. We shouldnt worry too much about the engine - it is the craft that determines, whether this will succeed or not. -

those are still assets from the arma editor. it made sense for a mod, but i really hope they will all be properly redone as time goes by

try everything to break the game, and if you succeed, bug it at http://feedback.dayzgame.com/ so if you get stuck in a wall, screenshot it, take note of the building and its location - and bug it.

i think it fits well together with the 1996's Quake I bleeding effect we currently have. Retro!

respawn with all equipment after desynchronized death
Element47 replied to ingegnercane's topic in Suggestions
you do realize though that this is not intended behaviour. so the solution here is to fix the desync, right? -
respawn with all equipment after desynchronized death
Element47 replied to ingegnercane's topic in Suggestions
define "desynchronized death".. desync does not cause death. -
there was a twitter exchange with one of the devs about the tremendous fun of kneecapping. so i guess yeah.

Why aren't there 'fat' characters in DayZ?
Element47 replied to TheMachine's topic in General Discussion
the reason is lack of resources. both team-wise and engine-wise. one body type, one type of gear. -
hypocrite loot farmers, why do you whine about "hoppers"
Element47 replied to mssing's topic in General Discussion
cant wait for private hives, so the vain princesses can make their own little kingdoms and leave the public servers.. -
this goes completely against the core concept of the game. what you suggest is basically the private hive concept, which will come once the core game is finished. but private hives were - imho - a cancer in the mod. having ONE character per difficulty setting across all public servers of that setting makes death meaningful in the first place.

The Current Combat Log System Dosen't Work
Element47 replied to Karmaterror's topic in General Discussion
the current system is fair, as staying in combat gives people a higher chance of survival than logging out - so we have an incentive for desired behaviour. a cancellable timer has been tested internally and found to be too exploitable. -
Spawning in after safe log out or reset with nothing?
Element47 replied to Sir Schmoopy's topic in General Discussion
well, with current stability of the server-hive connection i am inclined to give OP the benefit of doubt. and jumping to conclusions and insulting everyone who posts issues with the login system is not constructive, it will lead to people not willing to announce issues fearing community backlash. -
i admit, i am one of those spending 2,5 hours in the char customization screen when making a character. my skyrim installation has atm some 450+ hairstyles installed. so yeah, once core mechanics are implemented, i expect proper character customization. as Dean is friends with the folks at CCP, maybe he could borrow from their character editor, which is pretty awesome also: beards. braids and beards. and braided beards.
