Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?

Damu (BI dev) stated clearly in 2012 already that they definitely want to add deferred lighting/shading to counter long-standing and acknowledged issues but that it probably wont make into Arma 3 as it means a significant change to the engine. If you want to learn more about the technique and its (often positive) impact on performance, GSCs STALKER implementation is teaching material. Read up here for example: http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems2/gpugems2_chapter09.html oh, and since i am always eager to learn: please explain to me from your vast cg experience how deferred rendering - as a screen-space technique - is impacted by world size.

Let perma death be perma death

the more there is at stake, the more sorrow experience those, who lose it unfairly - and the more rewarding it is to a griefer.some people just want to see the world burn, no matter the cost.

Let perma death be perma death

although i'd be willing to take part in this experiment - for example a 3h per-server lockout after death - i am pretty sure that it would encourage griefing, and further reduce the willingness of players to interact. and the short respawn-regear mechanic you are condemning: it serves testing purposes. the current system is meant to put gear into the hands of the players so they can use and abuse all of it as much as they want. once all mechanics are in place, i am quite convinced that regearing will become much more difficult.

Anyone else think DayZ should switch engines?

so you're not familiar with the arma feedback tracker, or the BIS troubleshooting forums, eh? i could list dozens of things that have become staple features in video games but still are not supported out of the box by RV. but it doesnt matter. RV is the engine DayZ grew from and which it by now left behind, and the more legacy code is ripped out and replaced by the dev team, the better. thats why i think that the renderer change is the best news this year. DayZ will probably be the first RV-based game with proper shadows and lighting, while in Arma3, we still have no deferred lighting and walls still cant cast shadows - something that STALKER had in 2007. p.s. - so frankly, dayz has switched engines, from rv to custom fork. /thread.

Is the attachment system bad for variety ?

I agree with Paulie though, that the attachments might need balancing to make full use of the potential.

Is this seriously the whole game?

a lot of dayz videos are edited or staged, so you dont see all the running and hiding inbetween, but only see the distilled action. to me, the hour-long solitude is an integral part of the game - if after all that hiking you finally run into another survivor, it is a far more thrilling experience than in games like battlefield, where the cycle of spawn-run-die-respawn is few minutes. especially since the game doesnt tell you if its a hostile. apart of that, the environment is planned to have a much larger impact - fighting hunger, thirst, disease, hypothermia will (hopefully) become vital for your survival. and as for the spawn points: you have to understand that loot and spawn points currently have one single purpose: providing people with an abundance of items and directing them to certain areas of the map for testing. both loot balance and map balance through spawns will only be conducted after the game is feature-complete.

oh look, another youtuber not crediting arneoog for his intro. instant ignore.
  11. excellent idea. regarding music licenses: you could let the walkman be an ingame music player. let the game read a music folder you specify and casettes consist of random tracks of your own music. thus you'd have no issues regarding licensing. you could of course still implement casettes with music from public domain.

    the future of dayz

..:: infinite diversity in infinite combinations ::.. i welcome mods. and private hives. i think it is good for the game and for the community. pewpew-faction can have their mod, disneyland faction can have their mod, griefers can have their mod.. makes the vanilla experience more pleasant with all those people gone ;)

First discount of DayZ standalone on steam

i am sure you have the numbers of sales prior and during the sale at hand to support your assumption, right?

    Some RP items and 'minigames'

a chess/checkers game would be awesome.. although considering BIs talent with user interfaces, you'd have to scroll through a list of all possible moves to choose one lol.. your move: 9-13 9-14 10-14 10-15 11-15 < 11-16 12-16

First discount of DayZ standalone on steam

i bought it to support the development, not to get it as cheap as possible. a 15% sale doesnt detract from that. if you got an issue with this sale, you need to ask yourself why you bought this game: did you jump a hypewagon? then gtfo and cry more, you deserve it. did you hope that its the lowest possible price? then you're naive, because there will always be sales in the product lifetime, you should have waited for the steam christmas sale in the second year after retail release or did you willingly shell out your money to support the developers because you have faith in their vision? well, then you probably are a happy backer like me and dont care how much other people paid.

    Torchia's Mega Vest Sneak Peak

it depends what you define as 'tricky'. creating a skeleton, hierarchies and rigging it to have a character model with proper animations and physics-affected attachments like hair, coattails, shouldered weapons or bags and holsters isnt black magic, but its a few weeks work.

What dayz could have been without zombies

im totally for more S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and less Counterstrike. but i think we will see that in future.

    Torchia's Mega Vest Sneak Peak

i recently watched a documentary about some weird hunting guys from america, their 'outfit' would be considered a terrorist paramilatry organization here, so i guess there are cultural differences what is considered 'military' :D

Want to host server in Argentina

only large, established game server providers are given the opportunity to host the alpha testing servers, under strict terms of agreement, and with significant investment (like providing a large number of public server instances at own expense). so unless you already have established a reputation as game server provider with hundreds of high-performance servers and a robust, tested infrastructure for mass-deployment of patches, you will not be eligible. the community will be able to host own servers in the future, this is not viable for the game at current stage though
  23. i would maybe consider buying Arma3 if it was part of a $3.00 humble bundle - but only if the rest of the bundle would justify that. Please do not make wild assumptions about other members of the community. Not everyone here is a fan of Arma.
