Average Life Expectancy up to 65 minutes
Udak replied to DeadOnDrugs's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I thought this was because they disabled the respawn option? Previously people would just kill themselves over and over in order to spawn where they wanted (because, seriously, forget Kamenka, Komorovo, and the entire Chernarus SW) -
Highwater mark was ~180k unique users in one day, just prior to the .4 patch...this was also just prior to hitting 1million total unique users. Now we're barely cresting 140k on the weekends. Dunno about the other posters here, but losing over 20% of your active audience (while adding over 100k unique users to the total pool) seems like we can justifiably say this mod has jumped the shark. I don't say this as some hater, mind you--this was the only game I played for the entire month of July. It was a fantastic ride and I got three other people to buy Arma2 so we had a group going. I'll probably return if/when they can get their shit sorted out(and am still eagerly awaiting the standalone).

DayZ: The state of death, and the Great Storage debate
Udak replied to The Sad Panda's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I like the idea of character progression, but I think it can't be a multiple hat-situation. That is, you pick flavors on spawn (think medical, mechanical, survival) and then the progression is done within that class; no one who chooses mechanical would be able to perform any medical work beyond a bandage, for example. Your flavor would have a specific character model to aid in identification, and within the flavor would be additional choices that would be made on further progression--think vehicle vs home construction/defense for mechanical, or assault rifles vs sniper rifles for survival. Mutually-exclusive paths, essentially Further point would be that to progress, you would have to DO things specific to your class. Expect to be killin' zombies/guttin' animals for survival and healing dudes for medical. This prevents the stockpiling (dupes?) of skillbooks to quickly ramp up your ability. Suddenly, your survival dude doesn't shoot the medic on sight, because he's at 6000 blood and has no way to heal up to 12k because you decided to focus on guns versus animal gutting. Plus, bandits can still take potshots from the hills on Electro. Everyone wins! -
Someone posted the steam autorunner on the first page, so I won't detail that little trick...instead I offer ye: The binorunner! Requires a pistol and binos. Simply crouch, pull out your pistol and then pull out binos. Just push forward while looking through binos, and voila! You're running on par with the sprint but crouched. Food/water consumption is the same for a normal crouchrun, ditto with audibility/visibility... just beware that every time you stop, you pull the binos to your face, so it's not a great tactic when you got zombies or other players chasing you.

Also means less data. If you're serious about this ending up as a good game, the more bodies in the alpha the less bugs the standalone will have.

We were at 180k unique log ins (in last 24hrs) last sunday, and it looks like we're at 170k now. This is despite the fact that we've added 50k new unique identities over the last week. Assuming even half of that group gave up immediately because it was too hard, we're at a loss of about 35k users over the past seven days.

Ammo Not Refilling On Re-Log After 1.7.2.5
Udak replied to Nick8478's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Last post confirmed it, no one would honestly admit to killing the weaponless because the better-armed occasionally kill him--but the troll is still a win because it took three posts to figure it out. -

I've also heard it works if you put nothing in the tent before a server restart; the main point is that nothing will be in the tent after the first restart but it should work beyond that.

Cherno vs. Elektro - Which is more dangerous?
Udak replied to (_BlaZe_)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Right now, Electro gets it because of how broken Cherno is. The screen tearing alone ruins the entire city for my crew. Expect things to balance back out once that gets fixed, as people realize that the residential spawns in cherno mean more ghillies/camo suits than anywhere else. -
For those who aren't aware, heatmaps typically show player density in video games--usually related to deaths/kills, though it can be tied to simple location-over-time. Seeing as how the Hive already has this data (and it pretty much has to, in order to track where you are), it'd be cool if we could see a heatmap of the full extent of Chernarus. For instance, I've had a hunch for a while that Electro's northern firehouse is more dangerous than it's southern counterpart--due mainly to the surrounding mountains that have easy access. As a counterpoint, the southern firehouse is closer to the mart, church and several houses--all of which increase the odds of encountering another survivor up close. Imagine a heatmap of where killers are in relation to cherno--find out the higher density camp spots on the heights above town, and start wreckin'. A heat map of player locations over time could help you set up your tent in a just-off-the-road location, where only 100m (and a hillside) separates you from the large stream of people heading to stary or NWAF. I feel like the data is there already, and there would just need to be some way to cull out the relevant data points and go from there. It'd also be interesting to see it change over time (imagine how many less people enter Cherno due to screen tearing). I certainly understand this would be a low priority, especially in comparison to much more pressing issues (hacking/duping/screen tearing, for three), I just think it'd be do-able, and a relatively easy thing at that.

The tactical significance of sniper rifles, accumulated rebuttals and why they're here to stay
Udak replied to ZedsDeadBaby's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
His point is legitimate, though, as 31lbs in the hands alone makes for a beast of a time, not counting the 24 items in the bags, items in the active inventory, backup weapon the back, etc etc etc. As Zed pointed out, that's more an argument for a revision of inventory/weight usage, rather than a simple item list--which is 100% accurate. I'd like to know how we're fitting these rotor assemblies into bags myself... EDIT: I've ran with a 249 and that's no picnic (and only weighs ~20lbs with 100rnds) -
POLL: What do you do once you're geared up?
Udak replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There's other things to do besides hunt children in Electro or Cherno. Medics are always recruiting, for the bored but well-intentioned. On a side note, I've started building supply dumps to facilitate my and other medics resupply. I also enjoy PVP around Stary (though not so much since the screen tearing has taken off). -

Udak replied to ZedsDeadBaby's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There's a certain type that picks up and uses a sniper rifle, and that type is most assuredly patient. If you aren't, there is a suite of weapons for you to chose from. EDIT: The kid likes bizons. There is no hope. -
If you think the heatmap would be full, you are missing what it does--it would be scalable, as any density plot is. Any heatmap should be able to define ranges (from my own limited experience, standard deviations tend to work well) for each step, so as to not muddle the issue with a large green swath across all of electro/cherno. If your argument is that there are only a 'few' most dangerous spots (and therefore noobs get too much of an advantage reading about the locations), I would posit that you're grossly overestimating things. From my own experience and depending on why I'm looking at it, I've been at least a dozen different places outside electro providing support-by-fire. Therein lays the ultimate point--if you really think that your choice locations would be so obvious on the heatmap, that means a staggeringly large number of players knows about them--which I don't think is the case. In fact, the argument could be made that it will further allow well-trained snipers to gut their lessers because you have statistical data on where the losers keep trying to snipe from, while your well-hidden (and relatively unknown) clutch protects you. If in fact there were only five or so places to snipe from into Electro, for example, then no one should be able to snipe into Electro--anyone with half a brain would simply check all six locations rapid fire, and then head into town. No, I'm looking for data that says players tend to chose the Eastern heights over the NW treeline. Not expecting (nor should anyone) a 6 digit mgrs for the loc.

NOT ENOUGH BEANS IN THE WORLD -
I hear that, but it encourages innovation. As people begin to sit and watch where they're getting shot from, it forces the old standbys to adapt as opposed to continue sitting on the same patch of 1x1 grass that's gotten them to x# of kills.

Gl, traffic is down at stary since the screen tearing of soldier bodies took off. Electro or parts of NWAF, that's your choice. -
How to not break your leg falling off the ledge in a barn!
Udak replied to zack4209's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
When spawning in Kamenka, I've taken 1.3k blood but no bone breaking for jumping off the lighthouse--they need to fix fall damage, fast. Second try broke my bones, but it still took a total of four falls (i randomly stopped bleeding, too--that was fun) to finally kill myself, interspersed with bleeding of course. -

Think of it as being locked into a battlion freq on a radio when in reality you just want to yell at the people around you. -
Bit of a deal breaker for the casual gamers. I have a three year old computer (that was a budget buy when i first got it). I dropped 50 bucks on a video card to be able to play this. I know, suffer the litany of insults and abuse upon me for daring to not spend hundreds of dollars on a computer...it's just not financially justifiable. Buying a new, top of the line computer that I make will still set me back 800+ bucks, and my only reasoning would be videogames. ...and considering the draw distances involved here, anything locking it to max would literally shut out anyone who doesn't exceed the recommended stats. Forget minimum, kids want their already OP ghillies to be even more OP.

My first Player-kill - in self defense
Udak replied to Bearhunter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm not going to try and rationalize it--people are dicks, and giving them a weapon when they have nothing turns the situation around (namely, you have things and they don't and now they can take your things forcibly). My own rule is that I gear up alone--I'll talk over comms asking if you need help (that is, medical supplies, food/water)...if they don't respond, move close to me with a weapon out, or do anything that makes me feel uncomfortable I kill them and move on with my life. -
