    Some variants of headwear.

I guess, that would be sad, if the vast majority of players would wear mostly the ballistic helmets. Logically, Globalization also had touched this area, as well takes place a convergence of the fashion (see the youth of big cities in different countries). But something is still present (though a little less, than in previous years). So i gathered together some examples of of civil headdresses from the ex-ussr. Some kind of newsboy caps, flat caps, taxi driver hat, hunter(worker)hat, etc. The last is a cossack's papakha. They wear them on "patrols" in many Russian cities. Although Chernarus is not Russia, the Cossacks somehow represented in some republics. The penultimate hat is a Turkmenistan's telpak. If you have seen movies about Russian Civil war in Middle Asia, you saw that the majority basmaches wore these hats. They work in two ways - protect against cold AND against heat. If we will see in DayZ the big mountains region (the northern mountain ridge), they may fit there good, imho.

    Some variants of headwear.

Yet some hats, which once was used in the army and later obsolete. After that they was widely used by civilians (without badge). Mostly by fieldworkers, geologists, foresters, gamekeepers, hunters etc. It is logical, what not all those who came from games with pile of name tags, huds, friendly fire off and so on, can understand that it not a question of fashion. It is obvious that the most distinguishable part of a outfit of the person is his headdress. This ain't nothing new, look at uniforms from previous eras. Yes, would be highly anticipated the armbands in different colors , which can help to distinguish teammates at a short distance. But at a middle distance (and especially in bad weather and in the bad lighting etc) the effect of diffrent colors decreases drastically. But at the same there are distinctions of a form (that's why in the wars rival armies prefers helmets in different shapes). Now if we add here 150 expected players on a map, of whom at least 4-5 will be as small gangs, then is obvious, that distinguish of teammates on mid to long distance in bad visibility isn't simple. But instead of whining to add bright nametags and all such unreal hud elements, is better pay attention on that how was this problem was solved in the past IRL. Yes, someone wants to wear beer hats and such stuff, but, imho, they get only one result - much more frequent waking up on the coast. But I heard jogging is good for your health.

    Horses, the almost perfect "vehicle"

My humble opinion is, that before addition of horses, Cherno needs extra large piece of land mass, presumably on west. The mountainous, wooded, rough area, with the narrow mountain roads and trails. Area, where horses have preferences if compare with vehicles and if even walking on foot. Then this big rough area would be as kind of hiding place for horses and riders. They needs it, to be capable against more faster vehicles and in era of semi-automatic and full-automatic weapons. Because without this, would adding of horses be only a big slaughter fest, imho. Logically, depend by devs, whom they want to attract more, having added horses, fans of a slaughter or admirers of riding. If to speak about tactical use of horses, then i see them as fast transport on rough area (as i described), for small gangs, who will make fast raids on any village and then quickly retreat to safe mountains. A rough picture about the proposed area.

    Remove Payday Masks from Game

Original soviet carnival masks. I think, they would be even creepier.
  6. IMHO, M4 have its place in Eastern Europe, because some countries there already use it. Though not in very big numbers. And AK-74M need to be at least in comparative numbers. A little offtop. If something might be replaced, then FNX 45, as service pistol in Eastern Europe. Yes for .45 cal Colt1911 as civilian gun in living houses. But in the army, police and in prison system i would suggest only these handguns, which use 9mm Luger and 9mm Makarov ammo. Glock 17 in the army (with threaded barrel), and Makarov in Police and in the prison (if we will see it).

DayZ Spawn Points - Mass Suicide

A sandbox doesn't means, that is all choices by beginning. Maybe someone will spawn not in the apocalypse setting, but in Cherno Life. The story, as survivors are from the sunken ship, it seems rather reasonable. Maybe in passing the character partially lost memory.

DayZ Spawn Points - Mass Suicide

People do suicides because they have a choice and hope to a good spawn. Need to remove the choice and the game will become what it should be - a hopeless survival simulator.

No, that's a German helmet. Nowaday.

How to make the map more engaging.

In addition, some quarries and trenches, in various stages of readiness, for burial of the dead.
  15. Yep, VBS3 supports the rivers and my humble opinion is, that DayZ developers must really to be interested to implement such "feature" in DayZ, "no matter what". Such details as the rivers, wind and the visible grass from long distance could play in the survival simulator much greater role than in a milsim. Because in addition they are bound with getting of resources. Although visibility of the grass on long distance, appears to be the most difficult problem. The small river in VBS3 looks decent (in video from 2:42), though don't know how hungry to resources it might be in game.

DayZ Weapons - What To Expect

    The AK-74M uses 5.45×39 cartridge.
  17. gregor (DayZ)

How to make the map more engaging.

First what come to mind, is too little evidence of the panic, disaster, the attempts to evacuating. Furthermore, seems believable that many people will be mentally broken. They lost its family, friends etc. Not all will have purport, to fight further. Consequently, apparently we should see the aftermath of many suicidal acts. In addition people who hanged themselves, when they had felt first symptoms of an infection. One more thing. The DayZ world needs, imho, the burned-down houses. Somewhere maybe even the district of the burned-down houses.

    Polaroid Cameras

Here are some Polaroid cameras which were made under a license in the USSR since the 1989th year (and later in the Russia).

Could DayZ be done better on a different engine?

I doubt. Though would be interesting to see DayZ on the WWIIOL engine, with its capability hold thousands of players on a single server and on a large map (iirc 52 000 km2), and with the very decent ballistics. But the engine itself is very old, with the graphics "from the previous era" , and therefore requires huge investment and reworking. I really doubt that it would be a feasible task. Maybe in the next DayZ we will see the Outerra-scale engine and with many other features, if BIS would come to an opinion, that just DayZ is their the most essential income.
  22. gregor (DayZ)

    The game needs nametags

    No.
  23. gregor (DayZ)

    Seasons

I doubt about the seasons in Cherno. Some rare events, such as short-term snowstorms, could somehow fit. Because the zeds in DayZ isn't the undead or yeti, but sick people, who may die by cold, imho. What is DayZ without the zeds? But the additional map in the north, behind the Mountains, with more harsh climate, why not.
  24. gregor (DayZ)

    The Soviet Connection.

Military locations / training barracks needs such schemes / posters..

Why is the goal; servers able to support 150 players?

That's from an one old interview. Logically, something could change now, but "hope dies last". I hope, that a "portal" system allow also adding new areas to mainland of Chernarus.
