  1. Personally I don't care because my eyes are usually on the surroundings, either scanning the horizon while running between towns or checking around corners in one.

    So, when do you shoot?

Here's how I operate: 1. Always keep an eye on the chat for FoF inqueries, especially when in towns. 2. If suprised (suddenly spot a player within around 50 meters), immediately assume hostile and open fire. 3. If you spot another player first, acquire FoF. If no response is given and you remain unseen, attempt to sneak away. If you are seen, take hard cover and assume hostile. 4. If player who has spotted you starts advancing on you, give final warning. If there is no response and the player keeps advancing, assume hostile and/or foreign. Take hard cover and open fire. 4. If FoF is acquired, let the other player approach you. Do not approach the other player as he might be trying to lure you into an ambush. Be especially wary of players with clantags, mostly bandits form clans. The important thing is not to take unneccessary risks, but still give other player a chance. And in case it wasn't obvious, if someone opens fire on you, hit the deck and return fire. And if for some reason you don't know what terms "FoF" or "hard cover" mean, shame on you.

Reply to Rocket about zombie AI

At present, I think of the zeds as more of an enviromental hazard in a PVP survival game, rather than the actual point of the game. They are mostly just an annoyance, and only become actually dangerous when you're either in a house with only one exit (with not enough ammo to deal with them), or when there are literally dozens of them in narrow city streets (when you can't run and gun so easily). Anything else and they are easily dealt with.

    DayZ Memes

First 3 pages were pretty good, after that it sort of dozed off to people that have no idea what a meme actually is
  5. I'm willing to bet that people who say (in this thread) that the night is perfectly fine the way it is, are using either NVG's or the gamma trick. I'm fine either way, make it brighter or don't, the gamma trick works fine so far so I don't really care. Would be nice if I had some colors on the screen at night though. Now that I think of it, the maxed gamma+HDR has pretty much the amount of darkness I'd like there to be, maybe around 10-20% darker than that. Because then there's light enough to move and see near you (meaning like 10 meters and a bit blurry), but still dark enough that you need some kind of light source to see farther and clearer.
  6. What time of the year is it ingame? If it's summer then I still think the night should be shorter. Though it might look more like fall, what with the yellow leaves and whatnot. And I wouldn't be suprised that everywhere in the world has more light in winter than Finland. We only have like 3 hours of daylight in winter :) Well maybe not 3 hours, but thats how it feels when you spend most of the day indoors.
  7. I find it really fucking annoying that the night comes so early, I mean in Finland the sun sets around 11pm (even after that you can see clearly without any street lights), and yet the FI 3 server is dark by 8pm, and I mean pitch black. I think that's bullshit since I usually play games from around 6 pm to somewhere around 12pm. So I only have a few hours to play before I'm pretty much forced to switch games. I don't really mind the dark personally since I'm always carrying a gun with a flashlight (Remington usually), but the rest of my group has AKM's and CZ550's so they all log off for the night, just when I get started. Oh, by the way, flashlights don't increase zed aggro at all, 5 meters away proned with a flashlight? No problem. I think it's pretty balanced that way, since flashlights are soooo easy to be spotted by players and unlike chems and flares, you can't throw a flashlight on the ground so it's always showing exactly where you are. But seeing how Rocket is with de-incentivizing playing at night, I'm guessing it's gonna be changed at some point to aggro as much as flares or something. Though I'd like the not-aggroing flashlights to stay because it allows for more tactical gameplay, with one or two players showing light to the rest of the group. Anyways, playing alone is BS to me because I'm a team player. So easy to get onehitted to unconciousness by a zed and bleed to death. And I fucking love that because if you play alone, you have to be so goddamn careful of zombies because you have no helping hand, no backup, nothing. All it takes is one lucky zombie and your ass is zed grub. Not to even mention hostile players.

    Build 1.5.8 rolling update

A bit of offtopic here: This forum is starting to grow in to a flaming inferno of people getting annoyed by Rocket calling them "carebears" because of a playstyle, and other people trolling and calling them pussies and whatnot. You'd be wise to start handing out warnings for flaming soon, or you might have a riot on your hands. Great patch so far though, can't wait until the clothes come out.

    Build 1.5.8 rolling update

What's this then? My groups camp is 2 kilometres into a forest and we have to go find a FARM to get wood? I'll forgive you though, because there isn't any loot yet outside of buildings. Pretty crap though, that from now on I can't light a fire at night just to bring light while I empty my gear to the tents, eat, drink and chill while waiting for groupmates to arrive. Not without keeping like 10 stacks of firewood in a tent, anyways.

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

Asking if someone is in Cherno is already dumb enough. Of course someone is in Cherno! Most likely a bandit with a sniper rifle. xD Well yea. If anyone actually is there, he'll be getting the fuck out because someone else is there instead of letting everyone know about it, or he'll answer and try to lure you into a trap.

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

I'm connected to my normal server just fine' date=' but there are between 1 and 50 zombies only, so no loot is spawning. It's been that way all day. [/quote'] Yea last night the server was @ 0 zombies. Eventually it went 30, untill people started killing them. Any idea what causes that? Is it because people are camping in cities? Maybe in the woods? Or is it an issue with the main/game server? It's some kind of bug that causes loot and zombies to stop spawning, it only takes a server boot to fix it though.

    Server Blacklisted: UK11

that seems like an advantage tho, not "cheating" worthy? It's caused by some bug that stops zombies AND loot from spawning, so not really an advantage. Happens on FI 3 all the time, all it takes to fix it is a server boot like Colonel_Black mentioned.

    Why bandits exist

I decided to write up a little thread about why bandits exist, and why you shouldn't complain about them. See, when something catastrophic happens, either because of nature or by man, there are those that are determined to survive by joining forces with others and rebuilding. That's all fine and dandy by me. But there are also those that turn to the other side. Those who resort to killing their fellow man to get their belongings. Those who are driven to form gangs and terrorize the remaining population. Those who cannot handle the situation mentally, who break and start killing simply for the killing. And that's why people camping outside Elektro or Cherno and sniping everything in sight is perfectly canon and befitting. Because it could happen in real life too. Not zombies, mind you, but the crazed gunman part.
  14. I dont know why, but for some reason some SE and RU servers seem to be working, but they're unplayable because of pings exceeding 200.
  15. Apparently the location reset was a short-lived fix since the problem came back after about 3 hours.
  16. So a friend of mine linked the mod on another forum and I've always been a fan of both ArmA and zombies, and I'd always been waiting for a good zombie mod for it and this looked really nice so I decided to give it a try. I first spawned in Three Valleys, south of Solnichniy, it was night time and the ambient music already made me terrified of continuing so I had to turn them off. I've played enough ArmA2 to pretty much recognize every bigger town in daylight but that didn't help me much since it was really, REALLY dark. I decided to head north since I read here that it's less populated there. I crawled the whole way to Solnichniy right next to the water, dipping in every few meters to make sure I was still next to the shore. In Solnichniy I had my first encounter with both zombies and a survivor. I saw a flare inside a warehouse on the other side of town, I got excited and stupidly started crouchrunning to it, attracting zombies. Then I just floored it to the warehouse, got in and said to my mic in direct comms "sorry man, I have a few after me". He was apparently friendly, at least he didn't shoot me or even point his gun at me. We killed the zombies, then moved out without saying anything else. Then he started using his mic as well, turns out he was british. We made our way to Orlovets with a few random incidents (first a guy runs past us with a flare and 20 zombies after him, then another guy ran to us with +30 zombies and chased us until he got bored and ran off again), and then the server crashed to I lost my newfound friend. I joined another server and kept going to Polana in the dark, with a goal to make it to the NE airport. I looted a store in Polana, found an M1911 and some other stuff, then travelled to in to the woods on the north side, then disconnected and went to bed. The next day I came back on and travelled to Dubrovka trough the woods, looted quite a lot of places there before heading out to Krasnostav and the NE airport. On arrival the airport was quieter than I would've imagined from the forum posts (everyone says they are quite populated), but I managed to loot the 2 hangars and the tower without incident. Afterwards I looted some more in the town next to it, attracted a few zombies and when I shot 2 of them I saw around 30 more spawn in plain sight and had to run like Usain Bolt back to the airport, climb the tower and log off before they reached me. I'd say this is an excellent mod. I didn't have a chance to play before the patch when the zombies were fewer, but I'd say this amount is right about perfect apart from the spawning mechanics. Would be nice to have killing the zombies actually have them stay gone for something like an hour or 2, instead of causing more and more to spawn. Also, I have no idea why there would be around 4 or 5 zombies at a random deer hut.

Good zombie amount.... with more ammo?

I agree, sneaking is a way better solution, except maybe when you actually have a huge group with vehicles, at that point it might be better just to go in guns blazing and getting out as quickly as possible (before they respawn). Or just send a few good sneakers and have the rest on overwatch incase one of them botches it. Personally I'm only on my first character, but I've stayed alive for around 10 hours with it so far, and I've only opened fire on zombies after they're alerted. I've looted 3 villages and an airport without firing a shot, although one of the villages ended with me running for my life to the closest ladder-accessable place and disconnecting on top (distasteful, I know, but there aren't any other ways to lose them so far). As for sneaking tips, here's a few: 1. Always prone, except for crouching when you can't see any zombies in the immediate surroundings (within about a 30 meter radius from you) to move a bit faster. This depends on the situation though, if there's a lot of bushes or walls around you take it slow. Though at night you can get away with prone much easier, the zombies won't notice you on grass (haven't tried with concrete or asphalt) unless they physically bump into you. Your character will panic (start hyperventilating) when one gets too close and it might cause you to panic as well and jump up or open fire, but you'll get the hang of it. 2. You can get suprisingly close to the zombies when proning, even in daylight. I like to use third person when proning trough a village, and measure the distances in my mind with a person laying down (it's easier to estimate in 3rd person). So image a line of people laying down on the ground, the number of those people is the number I'm talking about. You can get around 3 guy's length from a zombie in broad daylight and it won't see you. It might be even less, but I haven't dared to get any closer. 3. Take a while to plan your advance, and try to spot any zombies patrolling where you're going to go trough. If necessary, stay in the same spot until the zombie has gone by you a couple of times so you have a handle on the timeframe and path. This is especially needed when leaving a building with lots of zombies nearby because unless you really waited to see the zombie's path, you're not going to have any idea if there's going to be one right next to the door when you sneak out. Windows on the target building negate this slightly however, unless the server has no 3rd person. Then you'd have to pop your head up anyway, basically as bad as looking out the door. 4. If you do get spotted, run back the way you came (that way you already have an estimate of where the zombies are), unless you're leaving, then just run to where there's least unaware zombies. Run to a clear area away from anything except you and the chasing zombies (meaning farther than your gun can aggro them), then just run'n'gun them. 5. Then there's the bottle/can throwing to distract them while you sneak past, but personally I haven't needed them so I can't really say anything about them.

    Trains

Seeing as how at present the only way to get zombies off your tail is to either kill them or disconnect, I'd say hold off the punishment. At least until there is a system in place that lets you lose them by running far enough from where you first aggro'd them, or whatever system Rocket finds works the best.
