Creation of "private" RPG server(S?)?
fenrix replied to Rivler's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Only way to run a private server would be to run one not connected to the main database what with private servers being against the rules. Theres ways of getting it running via lan/privately but you cannot get it to save characters. Im sure someone will come up with one soon. it just takes ages. (also while i know how i'm not telling because i love the game too much!) there are 2 reasons rocket most likely will not do a local database version. (which would allow private servers) 1. the current version is already quite vulnerable to hacking and giving hackers access to a local database would allow them to more easily get past the mods defences. 2.because of the above. siginificant parts of the mods database system would have to be re-written securely. (which i hear he is doing) so if rocket comes up with a more secure database system I think it might happen, mainly because it would be more efficient to run a local database instance on the machine your running the server on with it only sending info and getting info from a central server by request rather than periodic updates which lag to hell. if that happens. possibly (hopefully) a lan toggle in our cfg's will appear. -
yeah if you get in a vehicle now thats not registered as created by the vehicle spawn script i think it kills you. (was messing around looking at stuff and saw it) so suck it hackers >:P

You, you and you. You are all part of the problem.
fenrix replied to The Killing Joke's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Me i simply stopped playing on multiplay servers. every 2 feet i was getting gunned down by random people who were not even bandits. and the one time i retaliated? thats right I ended up the bandit. maby I will come back now... maby this will help bring some of the trust back. I doubt it. Ill come back once the surge of battlefield and COD prats dies down. -
People allowed to host small servers?
fenrix replied to decap (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
25-20 is minimum. bit lame but. there ya go. atmosphere wise under 20 is pretty barren and lacking. great for small groups of friends to solo mission on but. not what rocket wants. -
have a look in your server RPT if you needto know why its crashing, might help

ive snapped my legs stumbling over a traintrack in the dark, it was possibly a bug, but it made me squeal with delight for a moment :D and then i had to bandage my bleeding and take some morphine... which fixed my broken bone... ever heard of a splint rocket? :)

An open letter to the silent majority
fenrix replied to Satire (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
+1 rocket, you make good games, keep it up! (I complain a bit but its only out of a wish to see the mod grow better, hopefully some of my and others complaints have helped rocket to see where issues are affecting gameplay ect.) -
Request: Allow Bans for Death Dodgers
fenrix replied to c.chris.perry@gmail.com's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
why dont you just ban them from team speak... seems a bit harsh booting them from the game server. -
ADMIN ABUSE: Admin "Karl" on TARKOVSKI server
fenrix replied to Gobbins's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
I think the fact that the developers are shutting down/ordering server owners about will foster more and more of this kind of revenge seeking complaint. complaints like these should go to the server they are about not the day z devs. they are busy enough as it is. -
Awesome +1

Game Design Analysis: Why Cross-Server persistency must die
fenrix replied to Tartantyco's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
easy enough to stop server hopping but will make getting in somewhat difficult if player structures are not restricted in locations. well my method would be this. Player places defensible structure/object. hive/login servers are notified of location and server. (or a local system which is local server only to cut down on db server loads and make logging in faster) server hopper logs in to server with defensive structure close to spawn in location hive login servers detect player and sees player would spawn in or too close. server hopper is disconnected/refused connection. that is what I would do. depends entirely how the defensive area system is working. would need to be able to join groups with leaders ect so that members can log in when inside the defensive area. this could be expanded in a messy resource intensive way by checking player locations and only allowing join if no player is within X radius of your spawn in location unless they are part of your group (assuming we have groups) -
The SP version should be allowed.
fenrix replied to robertstuartmarshall's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Heh, there will never be an sp or lite version, thats pretty obvious. at least not unless rocket makes it. -
A Concise Collection of Server Rules
fenrix replied to Mojo (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
yes very... concise... no one is going to wade through all that to get to the rules man. you should not have to explain a rule for it to be understood. a simple one line sentence is all that should be required. anything else is usually too complicated for 99% of internet gamers. still. I read it all and very good and well thought out +1 -
you realise people are scared of you locking them out of the database if they tell you to go jump oilman... Main reason I stopped running my server is I had a dev say they had recorded my ip... drew my own conclusions and shut it down. if thats how you treat server owners its no wonder there is a shortage, not to mention the prohibitive costs of doing so. server owners are all doing you a service and allowing the mod to succeed by providing expensive infrastructure you would otherwise be unable to provide. but you have all server owners necks in a noose currently. they have no choice but to use your database in order to run servers which means if they do not do exactly what you say. and lets face it you guys are pretty anal about alot of things. you will simply cut them off. granted, shared database means someone cheating in one server is cheating in them all. and that is an issue. as an extension of that philosophy you are forcing your own ideals on server owners that go beyond the realms of keeping the main database protected from hackers, farmers. ect. sure you have a vision for how the game should be played, and thats fine. but you do not own the servers and should not be going and telling people how to play. after all even people farming vehicles are taking part in an activity that would be persued by some survivors in a zombie apocolypse. while on the outside it looks like it is unbalancing. from a realism perspective. such things happen and the server will easily roll with it and be able to accomidate such things. by rigidly controlling how players play the game you are stopping the game from being truly emergant and evolving as players learn and survive in the environment you have created for them. so give server owners a chance. let them build communities, let them do what they need to do in order to keep thier little bit of the dayz environment running smoothly and efficiently. if something really becomes dead weight, you can always blacklist them. no offence, simply my opinion. ill shut up now :P

either way your looking at long load times while the server figures out who you are and tells the game server you just logged into where you were and what to give you. not sure how you fix that short of distributing your database so the servers all share it p2p style. would speed things up a fair bit and make it much harder to break... or fix if something does break. hmmm... possibly the very conundrum rocket is working through.

NZ1 has it's ping kicker set ridiculously low. like low hundreds. maby even 100. should be at least 180-200. anything lower doesn't take into account local lag spiking players. dropped in and watched from lobby for a bit to make sure and it was booting everyone in the hundreds out. Only noticed because i spiked and it booted me earlier. that and its suspiciously emptyness.

Run multiple servers on one machine?
fenrix replied to anthony_henson2003@yahoo.com's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
you would need to install a virtual machine. otherwise they would fight heavily over the processors of the server causing lag and such. also your connection might not be able to stand it. if you already have heavy traffic on your box then a second server will compound the problem. -

Food and water being used offline
fenrix replied to Jeff (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I havent checked but I would not be surprised if water is going down faster when offline than when online. in which case it could also be a bug. -
actually if i recall its a known bug with being turned into a bandit. you probly killed a survivor and got turned into a bandit which is why it teleported you.

I think the standard eve online response with modification works as a response to most complaints about this. HTFU its alpha. :) -
If you host a server please do this!
fenrix replied to TOPMO3's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
why? its there when you click on the server down the bottom in the server information. why make the server names longer than they already are? lazy much? -
no I understand the plan, what I do not understand is the reasoning for the plan... I mean international data transfer only costs a fraction more than internal data transfer. and most companies absorb the difference to give customers better deals. they should have a country blocker and IP range ban australia anyway. they will be blocking plenty of NZ methinks with ping kickers set low enough to boot australians.

limited international... but... its just data... why the frak... sigh logic fails at this point.
