    DayZ Australia

I believe the hive has been down all day. No idea how long it will be before it's back. You could try some of the private servers in the meantime. Try a different map if one is available.

For the standalone; please make the zombies a challenge

What if a group of players were skilled enough to capture an infected and chain it up somewhere? But instead of getting medieval on its ass, they inject it with whatever disease-reversing agent they've managed to concoct in the lab. (I'm referring to the SA, in which Rocket says we'll be able to develop cures for player sickness using makeshift labs). What happens to an infected once it's cured? I'm guessing we won't have this option though, but it would be an interesting game dynamic.
  3. Time: 2:53am. Subject is grey and flaccid. Unresponsive to medical stimuli. It murmured in non-english. Intentions unclear. I say, Jeeves, London will pay handsomely for a specimen such as this. ----- Actually, I dare say we would cooperate just fine in a DayZ game. I'm an awesome headshot player. Roughly 90% headshot stat before the debug monitor disappeared. I am however, wary of players who speak on behalf of the devs, who have no affiliation with them, and claim that others are "doing it wrong". I understand that some people abhor change. And that fear sometimes is translated into forum comments about how the game should be, but for the love of all that is holy, or unholy, I just wish people would stop enforcing their "this game is stressful, therefore everyone should be stressed out" idealism on other players. Yes, we know the game is meant to be hard. It's designed to frustrate. People seem to forget though, that this is the DayZ Suggestions forum. You may not like it, but hey, not everyone likes suggestions. Just deal with it without getting all Nazi on folks. My work here is done.
  4. Hey Zoey! I'm still up. These forums kill me!
  5. NoyZ, every time I read your posts, I hear the voice of Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs. "It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again..." I'm making you my personal project. To study. To observe. To prod. To write about in science magazines. I need to ask one question: By what authority do you claim to dictate to others how they should experience DayZ? Did the cool kids give you a wedgie at school, and now you just hate humankind? I'm right, aren't I?

    Player Death

Maybe this is common knowledge, but whenever my internet dies (which is not that often, but has died twice today), I get the "No Message Received" display notification, and when I log out and log in again, it treats it as if I've ATL-F4'd during combat and kills me. This is the pinnacle of frustration. I respawn with nothing. I love DayZ, but this is a gamebreaker. Fix it. Hugs.

    Player Death

Thanks Erizid. I've had this experience in the past, and you're right. Today was unusually different. I've had the "No Message Received" error before, usually when the server is struggling or rebooting without notification. I log out and in to a new server straight away, and there's usually no problem. I just thought that because my internet died, maybe it assumed I had ALT-F4'd and therefore applied some kind of punishment. Because both times, I re-started on the coast with nothing. No backpack. No items. Nothing. The first time it happened was right after I found NVGs at the NWAF. And again right after I nabbed an M14 AIM from a heli crash site. Why oh why oh why does this happen!?!?!? O_o

    Player Death

I'm just saying that it has killed me and respawned me with nothing, twice, after my internet died. Whether it's to do with the new combat mode or not, it shouldn't do that after the "No Message Received" notification. I don't know why my internet died. All the school kids finished today. Maybe there was a spike in the area that had some effect. I don't know. Internet connections do go down sometimes. That's not the issue. Normally when I get the "No message received" thing, I log out and in, and there's no problem. Since 1.7.3 this has been happening.

    Player Death

Hmm. Well, there have been no other spurious events taking place when it happened. As far as I know, I wasn't hacked. It was just that my internet died.

    Player Death

Since 1.7.3 there has been a new combat mode that will kill players who "end their game session" during combat. There's a 30 second cool down period in which ABORT is disabled from the menu to prevent combat logging. I don't combat log, but whenever my internet dies, and I log out and in again, it thinks I've combat logged, and so I respawn with nothing. This has happened twice today, coincidentally right after finding rare loot. Has anyone else experienced this?

Challenged completed - Negative 1,000,000 humanity

One day I will snap, and go from my no PK'ing hero status of Plus One Buzillion humanity, to Minus One Buzillion. At least I will get rid of this stupid white flannelette shirt.

Had my first upsetting death last night.

Smoke grenades and flares are great for distracting hordes. If you have one or more zombies already chasing you, it can be tricky trying to set one off without them still following you. Broken leg(s) is a real bummer though. Rocket is talking about having different fracture types in the Standalone. He mentioned ribs at the Eurogamer conference. I wonder if broken/fractured arms means you can't fire your weapon properly? It's gonna be interesting anyway.

Had my first upsetting death last night.

Three seconds is all it takes for things to go tits up. Whilst many players (including myself) try out the big weapons in the game, I feel I need to sell people on the idea of the Remington shotgun. It takes some getting used to, with all the partial 2Rnd ammo you need to collect to form 8Rnd "mags", but it is possible to kill 2 or 3 or even 4 enemies at once with the pellets if you aim it right. There's YouTube video of one-shot-two-kills out there, but 3 or 4 is a little trickier, but still possible. I've been swapping from AKM to Winchester to Remington and going back and forth depending on how secure I feel, but for the pure pleasure of multiple kills, the Remington is the bad-boy you need for swarms like that.
  14. Soft-soled Shoes. Was going to suggest this for heroes, but no reason why you couldn't find them as rare loot in military or even residential areas. They reduce your walking/running noise by one bar. Particularly useful for shift-walking over hard surfaces that seem to be extra loud with the current settings.
  15. It sounds like there are enough changes coming to the standalone that we'll all have to re-learn the game anyway. http://dayztx.com/dayz-news-standalone-updates/
  16. If you're below 5000 humanity (a survivor or bandit), I believe the correct value is shown on the debug monitor. Once you blood bag your way above 5000, it still keeps a tally of your overall humanity, but resets the display value to zero, which then increases by 150 every 20 minutes. When you log out, it adds whatever temporary value you've accrued during that play session to your overall humanity value. That's the current bug. It means hero status will keep increasing your humanity each game session, provided you don't kill other players. So I have no idea what my actual humanity value is. It might be 20,000 but I can't actually see it displayed. Heroes get a swanky white flannelette shirt that's bound to get you noticed amongst the trees, so it's not the kind of bonus that's truly worthy of all the effort it takes to get one, You can sprint a little faster than other players, up until the point you start panting. So you could outrun a bandit over a short distance. Not sure the practicality of this though. And you're supposedly resistant to small arms fire like Makarov and M1911, but I'm usually shot at by higher caliber weapons than those, so again, not sure the practicality of it. I don't think redesigning the hero skin is high on their list of development priorities, but I would like to see more of a camo style hero skin.
  17. Maybe you've been freakishly lucky. My deaths have been about 1/3rd zombie related, 1/3rd snipes, and 1/3rd from hacking. No kidding. The zombies and some of the sniping I can deal with. About half the snipes have been when I'm in the woods, miles from anywhere, and a high caliber weapon has taken me down. The hacking has been pretty silly. Teleported into space. Run over with the SUV or Hummer. Instakilled or teleported to the limbo island. I know how to avoid the obvious kills. I just wonder what players have to fear from the idea -- and it's an idea only -- of more close-to-medium range interaction in the game. Didn't Rocket remove helicopters in one version just to see what would happen? Then put them back? I don't know if that really happened. I'm pretty sure I saw helis in the patch that was supposed to remove them. But as an alpha test, it would be interesting to see how players would adapt if suddenly rifles and smg's etc were unavailable. As an experiment.
  18. It's all good advice on how to avoid being killed. Most of the veterans among us will agree. I had some noob friends who were asking about the game, and I was trying to explain the PvP mentality to them. I think they will still play the game. I just hope the two minute gameplay before death doesn't put them off. PS. Some of us are not into killing other players for fun. It took me a long time to reach hero status. I can't say it was entirely worth it, because now with my new luminescent shirt, I'm even more of a target than before. But at least I can run a little faster and am supposedly resistant to small arms fire, but that's yet to be proven. PPS. The most fun I've had so far is from going back to basics. Winchester and a Makarov. Seriously. They both sound awesome and deliver the goods, at long and short range respectively. I did the AKM/DMR/G17 thing, but basic is much better imo.
  19. Pbremmus is right. The debate will rage and rage. It comes down to two scenarios: The legitimate sniper who does overwatch for teams going about their business, And the ass-hats who snipe for no other reason than they're bored. Then log out. The video evidence on youtube seems to lean towards the latter. And it's such a waste. I'd rather be sniped and be part of someone's legitimate story, than to be fodder for some bored script-kiddy. There's no way to police it currently, and pointless to try. Again, my original point was the relationship between hacking and sniping. I would just like to be sniped by a real sniper next time! :)
  20. Yes, I know it's hacked. My original point was about hacking / duping / griefing. This illustrates what players do, whether they have TWS's or DMR's or whatever. Even if they had a DMR or M14 AIM etc. It's the same lame ass "kill from afar" attitude that subtracts from the DayZ experience. Would they be as likely to front up to that player with the crossbow and pop him with a handgun? Judging by their commentary, I think not. At least the guy with the crossbow had some balls.
  21. This is what I was talking about, Utterly pointless.
  22. Let's all take a moment to listen to some badass tracks and get really angry about the things that aggro players. Then channel that into popping the mofo who wronged you. It makes sense. :) [edit] Wai-wai-wait. What was I thinking? Revenge is never the answer! ...Unless it's DayZ... dB~]
  23. You're right. I've never tried to snipe a player with a high end weapon. I've taken out loads of zombies from a distance with an AKM and even a Glock. Now *that* is hard work, let me tell you. Adjusting for head sway, ping, bullet drop. All of the comments/commentators here are correct really. My issue was with hacking / duping and messing up players' stories. If we were all experts at the game, there'd be nothing to say. I'm just championing the cause of the noobs and the friendlies out there. We were all noobs originally.
  24. I'm saying if there's gonna be sniping, make them have to work for their kill, by getting in closer to their prey. There's no effort in sniping from a rooftop a mile away.
  25. No one's discarding a game mechanic. In the situation you describe, snipers are only required to cover their clan because other non-clan snipers may be a threat. The very reason you feel the need for sniper cover is because you fear other snipers. And that's great. It makes for immersive gameplay. I'm just saying if the distance was dialed down a little, it would make things more interesting. It would change behaviour. Make the game more challenging. Rocket has said he intends to make zombies a major threat in the game, and I'm looking to the future is all. I think people have forgotten this was originally about zombies and survival.
