Glad to see this game is handicap accessible. -
Fellow DayZ Survivors/Heroes/Nice Guys (Tips and Tricks) and I want YOUR tips and tricks too.
puppetworx replied to KatieKillz's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Always have an exit strategy. I do this anyway, no matter where I am going, I make a note of cover around me and exit routes should shit go down. Half of the time when I am attacked it's easier to just evade, most people suck at shooting. If they pursue lead them somewhere you have an advantage and ambush them. Coyote Backpacks are, in my experience, going to get you killed more then anything else. Stick to an ALICE pack when helping people. You don't need to use shitty guns, in fact that's just going to get you killed. I roll FN FAL - since it doesn't have a fancy sight sitting on top of it people underestimate it. It's a two hit kill, very accurate, good range and stable for a fast rate of fire. One other thing I do is give away spare Ghillie and Camo that I find. Lots of people covet that shit but in my experience it only makes you a target. I do use a Ghillie when up North though. This seems to have a profound effect on the rate that people turn on you. I can only speculate as to why that is - but it seems to work. -
This amuses me greatly.

I'm a hero and I roll FN FAL. Pretty abundant gun at heli crash sites, ammo less so but I always find enough. I don't take kindly to folks shooting, threatening or trying to rob me so I want a powerful gun to knock them on their ass. The FN FAL does 8000 damage per hit, which means a lot of people will go down with one hit. Great range, accurate and very, very loud. It scares the pants off the folks in Cherno/Elektro. M14 is another good choice, less accurate but you'll find more ammo for it.

Settle down everyone the debug monitor is bugged, your humanity is not decreasing, if anything it's increasing when it shouldn't be. You will perhaps get a glimpse of your true humanity the moment you login, but if you don't have the debug UI enabled before you login it's possible you won't ever see your true humanity reading in the debug window. Changing skins resets your humanity to read zero in the debug monitor, but your actual humanity remains unchanged.

Be careful what program you use to launch DayZ

Sucks for you OP. They should really start teaching computer security basics in schools, if only the teachers had a clue. -
Sounds just like my first DayZ experience, apart from all the friendly people ;).

Stay off my DayZ ye damn whipper-snappers!

I wish vehicles were saved to character instead of server
puppetworx replied to sostronk's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Removing scarcity and allowing complete safety of possessions is not DayZ. Unfortunately I think tying the vehicle to the player and introducing car keys would decrease risk of loss so much that it would have severe consequences on the experiential quality of the game. I hate losing vehicles and other loot, but it's part of what makes the game so intense. Besides anyone who plays on a server without many scripting attacks knows that holding a vehicle is a lot easier once that variable is removed. -

Friendlies in Cherno - This Is Why You Shouldn't Kill On Sight
puppetworx replied to chernojourno's topic in DayZ Mod Gallery
Just watched the whole thing, great mini-series! I love teaming up with randoms, sidechat really is a game changer. One person's lack of experience or there unwillingness to take advice can often cause huge problems for the group like that guy firing the Lee Enfield in town for example, or somebody running down the middle of the road making tons of noise alerting zombies instead of running on the grass. Despite the problems it's a lot of fun. The riskiness of being around randoms with guns can be pretty exhilarating. Hearing you guys all admit you were a little scared of each other was was interesting, not a typical experience you find in video games! The Billy character seemed to be pissing his pants in fright until he turned on the bravado too. Overall a pretty great showcase of the emotions you can find in DayZ. -
ALMOST killed a guy with an AS50-TWS
puppetworx replied to Muncywolverine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I wanted to see how easy it was to snipe in this game (I never actually snipe in DayZ) so I opened up the Editor in ArmA 2: OA, armed myself with an AS50 and put 100 enemy forces heading towards my position. After 20-30 shots I had the hang of it and could snipe better then 9/10 players with one shot upto 1000m away. Moving targets were a little trickier to one shot, very hard beyond 500m due to the time it takes for the bullet to reach them. You can quickly learn the animations which give you time to get your shot off, for instance standing up from prone gives you a split second of time which is useful when the character is in the 500-800m range. Beyond 800m the time delay for the bullet to hit really necessitates a stationary target or large quantities of luck. -
I've found two in my time playing. One in a red roofed barn and one in a small grey roofed barn if I remember rightly. It's easier to find an AS50 in a tent or on a player of course. I find DMRs regularly at helicopter crash sites too.

I'm on one of my best runs yet too. 7 day old character, 600+ zombie kills, 5+ bandit kills, 50+ tents found, all tools, end-game tier equipment plus a freaking bicycle which I've managed to keep for 4 days - some kind of record for me. All while playing on public hive servers. Battleye isn't entirely responsible. The mod has lost players to the other great game releases of the last couple weeks and when you're on top, as DayZ was throughout the summer, you become a target for trolling, we all know that. The community has played a huge part in cracking down on cheats with the development of things like DayZ AntiHax and Community Banlist too. I'd say the game is playing better then it has in 6 weeks or so, well done all involved.

Was this kill justified? Did this count as self defense?

You gave him warning, he made no effort to communicate his intentions before approaching, totally justified in a lawless world. -

Limited resources [Minecraft proof of concept]
puppetworx replied to Apanthropy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Interesting OP. I read Sex at Dawn a few months back - it's a book based around the the effect that abundance of resources has on a population, specifically with regards to 'sexual resources'. It contests that the move to farming and away from hunter-gatherer behaviour coincided with the move away from egalitarian communities and towards individual property ownership as a display of status, this in turn resulted in increased violence from greater competition. Such behaviour has been observed in certain other species of mammals and the book, controversially, makes the case that sex and 'sexual partner ownership'(marriage) in humans is another of those abundant resources. With property ownership being such a big part of DayZ I'm skeptical that this would have a huge effect on killing. Other then by what skin you wear in DayZ your character is entirely defined by what they own, since there is no skills ladder. There was a thread started a few days ago asking how many people had actually died from starvation or hunger. The numbers are extremely low and if it has happened it's been on purpose, or a one-off. So there is definitely room to play with on this idea, and I'd love to see it. Something that might be interesting to see in the game is loot which requires teamwork to access. E.g. crashed vans that have loot inside and need 3 players to right and gain access to, or weapons caches that have heavy blast doors and need 2 players to open. -
I know thy pain OP. I keep seeing tents full of car parts, now I understand why. It's about time I set up my own car part repository.
-
I keep camps at the same location on multiple servers and often hop between them to swap gear. Is that server-hopping?
-
Go on side-chat enabled server, enter Cherno, give out a false location that you have a vantage point of and beg for help, kill any ragheads you see. Hunting is unnecessary when it's so easy to lead them straight to you.

I decided to try the M107 and AS50 out in the editor for yucks, as I never snipe in DayZ. The AS50 is a lot easier to get a rapid succession of shots off on target with, the variable zoom of the M107 is nice but it's really no contest - AS50 hands down. I put 100 opposing forces running down the NWAF and went to down. Sniping is ridiculously easy in this game.
