Predictions that actually came true
dsi24 replied to Eazy-Makaveli's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
All Dslyecxi did was give people a reason to point out the problem of third person, and a concise video to point to with every reason why. I remember talking about third person's removal back in February. Anyways, just like the easy crutch that was starter weapons and the highly exploitable periphery dots, the highly exploitable third person will be removed. -

Answer this question: How do you get rid of all of third person's exploits and keep it in a usable form at the same time? (spoilers: you can't, it's either usable and exploitable, or gone and unexploitable. The very nature of third person is what makes it so exploitable, you can't get rid of the exploits without getting rid of what makes third person third person) -
Do you play on first or third person servers?

I find it absolutely hilarious that anyone is trying to argue that FPV only will 'turn off the masses' or anything like that. Every single major game that involves guns is FPV only. All TPV only games with guns are very carefully designed around the flaws of TPV. -
The only reason you think TPV can be fixed is because you won't go through the motions of seeing the many possibilities for fixing it and how they won't work.

I dunno about that, for most of the third person people here the argument has gone from "but third person is fine!" to "well how do we fix it?". Once they start questioning it, it's only a matter of time until they exhaust all possibilities for fixing it and realize that, oh, it doesn't belong. Of course, you can't give them that "no one's opinion's are swayed" lifeline. -

Well there is only so much you can do with an inherently broken game mechanic. It's interesting to see what people can dream up though. They usually keep what they really use it for safe from removal and you can see a lot about how they play that way. -
If you make it close enough to actually stop exploits, you end up staring at the back of your head. The Last of Us, like Gears Of War, is very carefully designed to make 'tells' that someone is hiding around a corner. It also has a down but not out system to combat the idiocy of being killed by someone you didn't even know existed. Its gameplay is also much more fast paced than DayZ is, lowering the usefulness of third person's exploits. (notice how all of that also applies to Gears Of War, the only other 'big' third person shooter around) It isn't that simple :P

Cool, so what are your solutions to fix third person's exploits? -

Made this prediction at the beginning of the year when another crutch was removed... maybe it can still come true??? -

dsi24 replied to Wayze's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Oh man you're crazy. Most people do not give a shit about TPV v FPV, they just use the best tool, and because TPV is so easily exploited, it's the best tool to use. Most people wouldn't give a shit, a lot would love it, and some would hate it if third person was removed, just like the removal of starter weapons. -
You're forgetting about the "I don't give a shit about TPV vs FPV but use whichever is better" crowd. That crowd will always use TPV servers because they know TPV is better than FPV but don't bother to think any deeper about why that's the case. If TPV was gone they'd just use FPV and that'd be the end of it. Just like the crowd who fought back against the removal of starter weapons, we have a crowd who is fighting back against the removal of another crutch, third person. DayZ didn't die because starter weapons were removed, and neither will it when third person is.

Well yeah, it makes third person undesirable. Great if thats your goal... but why not just remove it? -

I really enjoy this poll, 4.5 thousand people with a majority that want to see it gone and a super majority that do not care if its gone or do want it gone. What reasonable person would respond to that with "well, it should stay!"? -
I find it funny, once you exhaust all of their arguments they just go "well its gonna have it anyways!". Well, why should it? What good reason is there?

At 0:00 if you just turn left instead of walking forwards, bam you're seeing around the corner without any chance of anyone knowing you exist. Again, if you fix the exploits, you ruin the camera. The exploits arise from what third person is. -
1) Freelook and gear menu doll solve that. You're really reaching trying to use this as a reason for third person. 2) You do not require a sense of balance in a video game, your character has perfect balance. You're really reaching trying to use this as a reason for third person. 3) You can feel objects when you bump up next to them in all first person games, you can tell what surface you're on by the noise it makes in all first person games, you can tell if you're in a bush by sight and sound in ArmA, and freelook allows you to look without moving your whole character, giving you a better sense of self than every other first person game in existance. You're really reaching trying to use this as a reason for third person. I always have to laugh when people talk about the senses in regards to first v third. ArmA is the single best game for sense of self and sense of surroundings out of all first person games ever. Purely due to freelook and the fact that your view model is the world model. It's obvious that people who say things like this aren't really thinking about what they're saying. All third person does is give you senses no human, or any physically possible creature for that matter, has.

It being close enough to the back of your head to not be exploitable (your shoulders would have to be at the limits of the FoV) would leave the back of your head taking up most of the screen. You wouldn't be able to watch your ass or watch where you're walking. Every single solution that actually stops exploiting just makes third person as a whole undesirable, every other solution doesn't stop exploiting. It's really that simple. -

Because no one else is playing on them because most people will just do what is easier. -
Third person makes the game too easy for most people to ignore the option. It's like (I mean, literally the same as) saying "You can either play this game with these wallhacks or without them... the wallhack will never get you banned either". How many people would say no to that? If you think you would say no, I hope you don't use third person.

1) Scouting is perfect in third person, camping is perfect in third person. Shooting (read: aiming at a target) is only possible in first person. Do you see the disconnect there? TPV trumps FPV in every single case except when the game makes it physically impossible to use third person. 2) I'm not quoting anyone, I'm using logic and reasoning. It's well known that FoV in third person does not change from first person. Of course some people will try and trump it out every now and then and have to be put back in their place. 3) Minecraft and DayZ: Both survival games. I hear DayZ SA is even going to have a construction component? One of the points you third person players like to trump out is "well DayZ isn't an FPS hurr because its not just shooting other people durr" Guess what, Minecraft is a game that can be both PvE and PvP just like DayZ, and guess what, Minecraft is played from the first person perspective. The only difference is you actually consistently shoot people in first person in DayZ (you can in Minecraft too, but it's mostly swords) How is DayZ not an FPS again? 4) ArmA and DayZ have been played FPV only since *both* of their beginnings, are you seriously trying to re-write history? It's shit like this that makes it obvious you people have no idea what you're talking about. 5) Shooting with an eye closed is blinding yourself to your surroundings and your target's surroundings, only a CoD kiddie would think this is true. 6) Nope, no words put in your mouth, only following your train of logic. You say third person needs to exist because of all the problems (bullshit in and of itself, and you know that, otherwise you would never have posted the line I'm talking about), then say DayZ SA will have everything new... so why does it need third person? That's all your logic, all from your post, you just forgot to connect the dots, so don't blame me when you can't keep your logic consistent. 7) TPV is too exploitable to keep, the best thing you can do is technically not remove it. No one will use it if it is fixed properly because it will be either a shitty camera (the change camera mechanics crowd) or make the entire game, when played in TPV, feel janky (the change game mechanics crowd) so why not just cut to the chase and remove it?
-
-
Exactly, the poll was very carefully worded to be FPV Only vs TPV Only. Because FPV and TPV trends to TPV only (except for that bit where you shoot people but surely you wouldn't mind doing that in third person?) It's not about opinions, TPV cannot be fixed in a way that both removes the exploits and also makes TPV usable. If you think things through you'll notice this, but you stop at key points to pretend that if you really did it it would all work out.
-
Then why not remove it? TPV cannot be fixed without ruining its main uses or ruining playability of third person. So why the fuck bother?
-
But those few people that would vote for both would buy it regardless, they belong to the "I don't care deeply about this game" group. There are only two preferences, First Person Only, or Third Person. Most people play Third Person because its easier, the people who care about the game and want to see an awesome hard-survival MP game want First Person Only.

Spoilers: you can actually think about things before doing them. Why waste development time and money on a fruitless effort? Dontcha think that, somewhere, someone, some company, would have made a good TPV/FPV game where TPV isn't all powerful? Why do you think this is any different?
