Didn't see this in the OP and figured it was relevant, a comment on why the 4th wall (or other LoS based mechanics) aren't feasible for DayZ by one of the designers. Sadly that's really the only option that keeps third person and gets rid of the exploitability of third person, guess we can't have our cake and eat it too.

He also crapped on a sizeable proportion of his player base when he removed starter weapons, and later again when he removed .50 cals. You're still here though! -

Reminder to the people attempting to claim that DayZ SA will suddenly stop making money if third person is gone: It's been #1 on Steam's Top Sellers list every minute of every hour of every day since being listed. Trying to claim that the removal of your crutch will somehow take money out of BIS' hands is absolutely hilarious and as dishonest as you are when you say you can't exploit third person. -

This is the weirdest part, literally everything else in the game does the exact opposite of what third person does. The new complex health/energy system? Makes the game harder, more complex. Item damage/loss on kill ala Eve? Makes the game harder. Weapon mods? Makes the game more complex. Random spawns? Makes the game harder. Rarer loot? Makes the game harder. Blood bags nerfed from mod version? Makes the game harder. Saline bag nerf? Makes the game harder. Third person some how still existing? Makes the game easier and simpler... just... why?- 152 replies

Every single person that passed close to him was crouch running - head low and to the ground. Third person gives you an inhuman viewpoint high above the grass regardless of stance. -

So when is Rocket finally going to rip off the bandaid and make DayZ first person only? -
You know someone is at the end of their wits when their whole post can be deconstructed by a handful of fallacies. Also check this out. Only Possible In First Person Only The first three minutes of this are all that is needed to dump third person for good.

People have been babied too much by third person. They got used to it for exploiting to safely see around corners. They got used to it for being able to fly and drive without actually knowing how to do so. They've had it for so long that they'll fight tooth and nail to hold onto it forever. Don't listen to them. We need one-hundred and nine page megathreads about this bullshit, exploitable, one-sided, forgotten game mechanic every week until it's gone.

But making it harder to do makes it less likely to happen. Really good idea OP, making it actual zones instead of some kind of rules based prevents any information gathering through it!

Are there First Person only servers and without crosshair?
dsi24 replied to JulioRey's topic in General Discussion
Can't wait until third person is removed. -
I just think it's insane that development of the standalone started with such a big mistake. It can still be a good, even great, game, but it's been gimped from birth by not being on the latest engine version.

First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)
dsi24 replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Holy shit really? The way you people go back and dig up your old shit and fling it like it is something new never ceases to amaze me. This is at least the third time I've posted this in this thread alone: The reason why third person is bad is because it has an asymmetry of information. Think about this: You can hide behind a wall and watch an entire field and tree/bush line in third person, if someone moves up towards your wall on this tree line in third person you have a chance of spotting them, they have zero chance of spotting you or even knowing you exist until you decide to pop out and shoot them. Or maybe they never know someone was even there because you decide to go somewhere else instead of dealing with them. Third person's asymmetry of information is exactly why its so bad, and here you are trying to claim that it isn't unfair because everyone has it. Everyone has it but not everyone can use it, that is why it is unfair. Notice that "everyone has it but not everyone can use it" is precisely the reason why exploits are bad. Exploits like exiting the map, glitching your camera through walls, or seeing through walls with a magical floating invisible camera. All of these can be done by everyone, but only people in certain situations can actually exploit it. The first person outside the map can stop everyone else because he can always see and shoot them, the first person to glitch their FoV through a wall can see when someone else is coming to do the same and act first, the first person to exploit third person to see what they cannot see will always have the first move. In DayZ of course, that first move is generally "shoot them while they don't even suspect I exist". Imagine a situation where two people are hiding on corners of the same building, exploiting third person to watch the same street in each other's direction, waiting to see if its safe. Neither of them will know the other even exists until one person decides to move, that person will die. Do you seriously think that is a good gameplay situation? You cannot ever move because there might be someone there? You cannot ever be the first to move because if you move you will die? -

I really doubt that, no iron-sights or scopes? Yeah right; it wouldn't even feel similar to the game as it currently is. The more I think about it the worse it sounds... it'd be like WoW but without the easy-to-use attack commands. Also it should be noted that they play without the crosshair pipper, just the general crosshair zone. The pipper tracks exactly where your next shot will go, really stupid, the outside bits just tell you the general location your barrel is pointed, which is easy to tell in real life but hard to do without 3D vision in a game. The radar also only works for your fireteam within 20m, not your whole team :p Also it should be noted that nearly every reason to get rid of TPV was posted either in Dslyecxi's vid or within the first few pages of this thread (for the DayZ specific things). The TPV supporters meanwhile drum up lies at worst ("oh but the FoV is better!") and redundant claims of vanity at best. ("oh I like to see my character!" "huh? the gear menu? but...") -
I bet it has third person too.

But if that happened then it'd become obvious that there is absolutely no reason to keep third person view! Even RSI, you know, creators of Star Citizen, which is as RPG as it gets, understands that vanity is no reason to let third person intrude on its shooting gameplay. -

I dunno, it'd be kinda sad to see TPV go from being an exploitable mess to a buggy, janky, exploitable mess. -

The interesting thing there is that TPV isn't required anymore like he was talking about in that reddit thread. Presumably as he finds out how impossible it is to make TPV unexploitable it will become more obvious that it just has to go. -

Man the quality of that first person mod has improved so much, it used to act like a titanium rod welded to your hips: super jumpy. Looks surprisingly good now. -
Do you play on first or third person servers?
dsi24 replied to Wayze's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
If it weren't for all the non-"hardcore" players, DayZ wouldn't need a standalone designed to stop idiots from ruining the game for themselves. -

Third person still isn't any good for the game. It takes away from immersion (duh, it's a floating camera), it takes away from skill (no skill in swinging a magic camera around, no need to check corners or listen carefully etc), it takes away from combat (most combat is decided before it even starts because one person is in a position to exploit third person and the other isn't), and it takes away from interaction (no chance of just running into someone, you decide on every interaction... most people decide to kill, leading to the KOS we all hate). -

Why bother making a rest state timer in towns then? If the whole point of making the timer long is to make players not do it, then why not just not let players do it? The only reason you'd say a campfire is a death sentence is if you're planning on setting up camp near a major town and want to use third person to scout the area. A campfire in the midst of the woods would be hard to find, if you're in a helicopter you can only see the smoke in an area that looks entirely the same, hard to track to and hard to land near, if you're on the ground you can't see the smoke through the trees. Make third person only usable in a 'safe' camp area (as designated by "you thought it was safe enough to light a campfire here") and its fine. If you fucked up and lit a campfire in a town you can eat your mistake, third person lets you know where everyone nearby is, the fire lets everyone nearby know where you are, largely bypassing the asymmetry of information issue that is the whole reason third person needs to go in the first place. (the fire can't tell you how many people are there in the way third person tells you exactly how many are around, so it'd still be better for third person to just go) (PS: its really hilarious how some people are still holding onto "stop forcing them not to exploit the game!") -

Sounds good, more of a screenshot tool than a game mechanic though :p. It'd still allow you to scout a whole area just by taking a seat in a bush/on a roof though, make it so it only works around active campfires (give a signal that someone is trying to scout with third person). I think some kind of autorun mode is needed regardless, maybe only active while autorun is active? Autorun would be a button press, then you don't have to use WASD, but can still control with mouse, toggle freelook (2x Alt) and you can watch the surroundings as you run. Autorun (and third person) stops when you hit something (so people can't spend the whole time scouting as they move, or just autorun against a wall to exploit third person) or when WASD or stance change is pressed. The problem with only allowing TPV up until another player triggers something to force you out of it is that you know another player is around because of that. TPV is just as exploitable in the wilderness as it is in the cities. (in fact those pine trees are the only point where it can be physically impossible to see someone exploiting third person, making it only possible to tell they even exist by actually bumping into them. (even a heli can see someone on a roof exploiting it)) -

TPV is just as exploitable in the wilderness as it is in the built up areas. Things popping up in the middle of your screen makes the game feel janky, especially a whole player or vehicle. How would you make the mirror not look terribly janky? (Using ArmA3's RTT for a real mirror-on-stick similar to this game's camera stick would be awesome, but that specifically requires the lack of TPV to work) Either the player is putting their weapon away and swinging a stick around as you swing the camera around (requires time to put up weapon and change to the stick and vice versa, and where do you get the mirror-on-a-stick from in the first place?), or a stick is just sticking out of your back where the camera is located like this (and again, where do you get it from?). -
Nope, can't hide behind that. Humans have this great ability that allows us to imagine future scenarios. It's one of the things that separates us from the other animals. So what possibilities do you see, and how do you see them working? (Because surely, if you see a possibility, you see it working somehow, or otherwise it wouldn't be a possibility, would it?)
