Worst idea ever. Close thread. Ban OP.

    Life appreciation

I think the easy way to solve this problem is by making areas with higher end gear infested by many more zombies that spawn more quickly. It stands to reason that a military base would have been crewed by more than just the 40 zombies that wander the airfield. Increase the zombie horde in the airfield to 250+ and make it a damn challenge to mow down an enormous horde to access the best equipment.
  3. I had recently gotten killed, and upon respawning a new character headed to the south airfield. Someone had barricaded themselves in with barbed wire at the entrance, so I started to climb the ladder and noticed him peeking out over the top waiting for me. So I climbed back down and ran around the side, in full view of him waiting for me. I opened fire on him with the Mak I had, hit him once or twice before he backed into the tower. I then positioned myself so I could see through all the windows at the stairs and the tower edge. Eventually he moved to the top of the stairs in full view. I aimed through the window for a headshot and took it...and dropped him. I believe his name was Ninja. Too bad his corpse was bugged and crashed my game.

    Longest survival

My first ever character lasted a week (of playing a couple hours a day). Had an AKM, G17, ALICE pack and lots of goodies. I had just gotten into a firefight with someone at the airfield and got hurt pretty bad. I legged it outta there and headed to the nearest town (at night). Searching through the town I got backed into a corner by a wandering zombie, who then proceeded to wander directly toward me. Once he was alerted, I ran and pulled an enormous horde. I took down maybe 10 of them before they overwhelmed me. It was pretty depressing, but I worked my way back up and am camped right on the outskirts of the airfield right now. BTW, the G17 sucks. 1911 is way better.
  5. Let me preface this by stating that I grew up in rural Vermont where the closest town was 10 miles away, and lived there for 18 years. I then moved to rural Southern California for 4 years in the Marine Corps. I then moved back to rural New Hampshire, and have lived here for going on 6 years. I know a lot about vision at night, both from a casual and from a tactical perspective. I will agree that night is way too dark in DayZ. Yes I love the simulation aspect, but the darkness in DayZ does NOT simulate night time in the countryside at all - it simulates an enclosed room with black walls. Fact of the matter is the human eye has an incredible ability to focus to account for low-light situations in anything but zero light - an ability that is NOT apparent in the game. You guys can argue all you want that DayZ at night is fun the way it is, but that doesn't change the fact that it is completely, 100% unrealistic. I'm also inclined to believe most of you like playing at night for the simple reason that it keeps everyone but the "hardcore" players off the server, which is a very self-defeating attitude. The whole point of the game is to introduce the challenge of numerous players in the same scenario, thus excluding the majority because they can't function due to the the lack of proper lighting catering to NVG users and not to the realism aspect of the game. I'll say this in closing - rocket should increase night-time visibility, but not to the extent that it makes NVGs pointless. I've used real NVG's in the Marine Corps, and they definitely come in handy for seeing people at distances greater than 50 meters, something one without a set has a hard time doing in any lighting but a full moon. At least give players the option to navigate at night without the need of a chemlight.
  6. Supposedly deep fried twinkies are the best snack food ever. I've never had one, though.

    Performance Drop; 1.5.8.2 Hotfix

I don't get performance issues when I first start playing, but I noticed that if I play for over an hour, performance slowly begins to degrade to the point that its almost unplayable. This seems to happen most often when rejoining servers, but not closing out of Arma. Restarting Arma fixes it, so that tells me there is a memory issue somewhere.

    Disappearing Inventory when swimming

Ah, this reminds me of my days in boot camp trying to tread water wearing cammies, boots, a kevlar helmet, an alice pack and holding a rifle. It actually is possible for extended periods (depending on how much gear you have). If you float on your back and kick your feet, you can float pretty much anywhere, but its tiring.

Would you shoot the unarmed person?

When I first started, I would not have killed another person. But now that I have an AKM, a 1911, an ALICE pack filled with AKM/1911 mags, food and drink, a map, matches, binocs and enough supplies to last me a century...all in my first life (have yet to die)...I will shoot ANYONE on sight.

less likely to shoot female survivor?

How can you shoot women or children? Easy! You just don't lead 'em so much!

    PC Performance question..

I would verify that your 3D settings are not forcing AA/AF outside of the game.
  12. Do individual weapons have individual muzzle velocities in Arma? If so, you would have to compensate leading for different weapons.

    Flashlight + pistol symbiosis

I kind of wondered why the flashlight requires the use of the secondary weapon slot in the first place. It's pretty counter-productive to choose between a pistol and a flashlight, and extremely unrealistic. I feel as if the flashlight should take up a spot in the utilities section (like where the map goes) and if you have one, you hit a button to turn it on and sends a beam of light out. Realistically, military flashlights have 90 degree lenses with clips on the back of them so you can hang them from a pocket and still have forward-facing light...that seems like a viable alternative to me.

    Dogs: Discussion

It's an interesting idea, but it kind of decreases the tension and atmosphere of isolation and self-reliance. I thought that was one of the driving ideals behind this mod? Granted I'm sure there will be the option NOT to have a dog for the loners out there. I'm just concerned that survivability without a dog might become compromised.

    Enterable buildings

I'd like to bump this to the top, as I think it's one of the things that currently hold the mod back from becoming truly immersive. It seems to me if people are willing to jump through a bunch of hoops to download all the files and play the game, what's to stop them from downloading a new map or a replacement map with new models? +1 to more open structures.

    Average life expectancy

Probably the influx of new players dropping it like a stone. Or just a reset.
  17. I agree it sucks, but this is an alpha build of a mod in progress. You cannot come into this mod expecting it to be bug free, or expecting the level of service you get from a paid, fully finished MMO. Expect this kind of stuff to happen and always plan for the worst.

    anyone tried a controller?

Only thing more sacrilegious would be asking flight sim junkies if you can play with a controller.

    [FREEWARE] DayZ Install Tool v1.61

I tried using this updater and all it does is sit there doing nothing. Here is the logging up to that point. Once it hits Success!, it just sits there forever and does nothing further. Saving settings ... Checking current ARMA II path setting... Found ArmA2OA.exe, game folder correct. Detecting .rar files at : http://www.armafiles.info/dayz/ =============================== Success!

    THE GOLDEN SNITCH

OP missed platform 9 3/4 and got on the train at platform 10.

IF this was an actual game...

Definitely one-time payment for the game, like Minecraft. I also like the Minecraft development style, with cheaper access to the game in alpha/beta leading up to a more expensive full release. Kickstarter would be a great place to start.
  22. It seems to me like most of you are thinking far too extreme. If scoped rifles make sniping people far too easy for anybody, why not simply change the accuracy? I can speak from my experience in the US Marine Corps that just because a weapon has a scope on it does not mean it is zero'ed in well. Not only that, but a weapon which IS dialed in is done so at a very specific range, and does not account for huge variations in range outside of that range of accuracy. Bullet drop and windage play a HUGE role in determining shot placement at distances of 500+ yards. No scoped rifle is going to magically overcome the elements simply because it has a scope. My suggestion on this matter is to make entry-level scoped rifles more inaccurate and more difficult to use. I don't know if bullet-drop is accounted for in this game, but making the spread larger at range shouldn't be very difficult.
