I still have my everquest binders. Tons of maps and stuff printed out. Games used to be so much more mysterious before it was so easy to just alt tab and look everything up, or have a second monitor etc. DayZ does a decent job really, without including tutorials or mini maps etc in game, but unfortunately it's just a matter of alt tabbing to the dayzdb any more.

I don't really understand why it's hard to figure out the reproduction steps when so many random people are seemingly doing it. Same with actual hacks and how they're some times denied at first. Why not hire some one who's job it is to basically be one of these cheaters/exploiters/hackers so it's quicker to just reverse engineer what's actually going on? Buy the latest hacks and see what they do, hang out on the forums or whatever where these people are sharing these exploits etc. Seems like the team is often playing catch-up in some cases. Same with the general attitude even by Rocket, in that PAX panel, saying he hasn't seen that many hackers and thinks its overblown. Have some one on the team actually play the game like a large amount of the population plays, and go and spend the majority of their time in Berezino or around problem areas like the NEAF atc to see just how prevalent exploiting/glitching/hacking is. Every time I see the devs stream they're off on a little adventure away from these major hot spots, which is fine don't get me wrong, but there just seems to be this disconnect between the way a lot of people actually play the game and how the devs/team play the game, which limits their actual interaction with this type of behavior and it would seem valuable to have a few people's who job it is to stay on top of this sorta stuff.

I write down ranges from my favorite sniping spots on a notepad on my desk =P

Fresh spawns make the best target practice, for sure.

Just because people are taking advantage of it doesn't mean it's a hack. It's likely similar to the splint crashing the server bug, where there's some specific thing(s) you have to do to trigger it. People figure out what those things are, prepare in advance (stash duped grenades nearby/whatever), and then trigger it. Hackers/cheaters are the most likely to take advantage of it, but it doesn't mean the cause itself is a hack.

Restarts are too often for sure. They'll get longer. They've tested longer restarts on experimental before, the game just isn't in the state yet where it's reliable. As mentioned, servers get really bogged down and have to restart to keep things running smoothly right now. If you want to see this for yourself, throw an object on a full server that's been up for over an hour, compared to one that just restarted. Also, listen to all the glitch sounds etc that accumulate the longer a server has been up. There hasn't been enough optimization yet to avoid that. As well, even with persistence and loot respawn, the world either becomes devoid of loot or just full of trash at the moment. Until loot respawn is fully implemented correctly that's how it would continue to be. Even though loot respawn is currently enabled and persistent servers exist, I still find myself preferring non persistent servers because those are a crap shoot for finding items. Bottom line is, you're not wrong and I'm sure if you look hard enough some where the devs said they want longer restarts too. It's planned, but like all things in DayZ right now it's just not there yet.

Just had a sniper fight against about 3 other guys from 400-600m (started at 400m, then I moved back to 600m). Hit each of them multiple times, none of them died, for the most part they stayed in the fight too. Server ended up restarting. Just sorta frustrating to have to hit people 3+ times, when it's so easy to get into cover. I even broke a couple of their legs but they were able to just crawl away. It may be too easy to make splints imo, perhaps that limping animation should finally be implemented, so if you have used a splint you're forced to limp for a bit before it's fully healed. It's sorta a rough deal, I don't want to drop people super easy or anything, there's just some sort of gap that needs to be filled between taking 2-3 shots. 2 almost seems too few, but 3 is too many. I think it comes down to there needing to be a better status effect or something, they should really feel those first 1-2 shots and even if they don't die it should knock them out of the fight, not have people just running off and bandaging and being ok. This isn't restricted to sniping, damage in general is too inconsistent.

Yeah exactly. I'm sure there's a few people who embody that stereotype you're raging against BioHaze, but the whole appeal for a lot of people is that there's investment in DayZ. It makes the pvp all the sweeter, and it makes killing people more satisfying. The people who play for that risk/reward style of pvp, are always going to play for the pvp regardless of the other factors, and most with any sense realize those other factors just make it all the better. Also, besides arma there really aren't a lot of good games for long range sniping in a multiplayer environment. The one that comes closest to mind is battlefield obviously, but the series has gone way down hill in general and the maps have become incredibly linear. Battlefield also legitimately does hate snipers and has a multitude of shitty mechanics involved. DayZ is basically the ideal game to snipe in if you actually enjoy that type of game play. You're offered a huge map, with various points of interest, and complete freedom in finding a firing position. The view distance is awesome even if the network bubble restricts shots to 1000m maximum. As some one who plays some arma 3 as well, I find sniping in DayZ more of a challenge and more satisfying in general.

Arguing about the background of your character is idiotic and has absolutely no bearing on how firearms should function. Your character is whatever you want it to be, that's the entire point of a sandbox.

Sniping is pretty easy when it's working properly and snipers are the easiest enemy to predict. The exception being really good ones, but those are the exception and pretty damn rare. 99% of the time, the guys gonna be in the same old spot as every other guy before him. Also, this game is not played in a vacuum. 1v1 scenarios don't matter. The sniper shooting away might have a huge advantage over you, but who's to say some goof with an axe isn't sneaking up on him at the same time due to all the noise he's making? The only things I'd change are weapon damage in general being so affected by "regular" clothes (non armor), and cleaning up lag/desync etc because bullet travel time is largely affected by server lag as well as funky animations/sliding/desync makes hitting moving targets very unpredictable. Sway isn't really an issue besides the current bug where being hit at all gives you shitty sway. Use a splint, even if you've only been hit once, and your sway is fine right now. Sniping isn't hard, it's just buggy like everything else. When it's working properly (which it has at various times in the SA) it's arguably too easy, like in arma 2 and 3.

How is games like Planetside 2 able to have thousands of players at the same time?
Bororm replied to d.walker43's topic in General Discussion
There's a ton more stuff going on in DayZ than there is in planetside 2. Also, planetside 2 is still broken up into zones (continents) and does a ton of culling (I think that'd be the proper term). There was a huge problem when I used to play that you couldn't even see the majority of people even like 100m in front of you in large battles, because they just wouldn't render in to save on performance. I dunno if that's still the case. They're just totally different types of games, DayZ isn't a true mmo, I think it's kinda dumb that it's labelled as such on steam. -
As long as it's not ruined it offers protection, albeit slightly less for each condition of wear. The main thing though is having on multiple layers. Basically your clothes have to become ruined before you take any serious damage.

Duping is never going to be fixed completely in this type of game. Drum mags are lame. I get Katana's point, but that's why I'm more of an advocate of waiting to implement these things, because right now we don't have a loot system that supports "rare" items, and look at the state of the game. AKMs and AKM drum mags are so common that you can find 7 of them in one loot run of a mil base. There's also the detriment of drum mags when it comes to LMGs and differentiating between weapons. What's really the point of an LMG if your assault rifle does the same shit, in the context of the game currently. 100 round m4 may as well be a SAW until they implement more mechanics to better differentiate between the weapons. So again, they should wait till they have these systems in place. Wait till LMGs are in, wait till there's a larger variety of military grade weaponry, wait till the loot economy system is actually complete. Also, there's a pretty big difference in being able to spray 30 rounds vs 100.

Ok. Can they please either reduce armor from clothing.... Or

With the mosin: I shot a guy in the head who had a helmet and all that happened was he knocked out for the amount of time it took the falling animation to play, then stood back up (about 1-2 seconds). I then had to shoot him twice more in the chest to kill him, which indicates to me that the head shot hardly even did any real damage. I shot another guy twice in the chest, the second shot only knocking him out then had to shoot him again to kill him. It regularly takes about 3 shots to kill most people who are "kitted." I agree it's total shit, the main thing as you say is that the first shot does nothing to slow them down unless it's a leg shot. Of course if you shoot them in the legs, you're probably looking at 4 shots total to kill some one, and it's actually pretty difficult to hit a prone target at distance. I don't think sniping should be easier (it's already pretty easy), but I think head shotting anyone with a mosin round should kill them. These helmets aren't designed to withstand that shit. If it does knock them out, it should be a long ass knock out, not 1 second. It should be 2 chest shots to kill imo, and the first one should really fuck you up. In the mod, 1 shot from a sniper rifle knocked you out, the second killed you. Hopefully we see damage in general become a lot less randomized by gear. I'd rather bullet protection come solely from wearing actual body armor, rather than how many layers of shit and items you have on. -
I suggest NEAF or Novod rather than Berezino, you'll run into less hackers (although no where's safe). That and NWAF as mentioned. I'd avoid Berezino unless you really don't give a fuck, it's got the highest concentration of hackers.

A couple new things from this weeks Status Report
Bororm replied to Forrelist's topic in General Discussion
Really disappointed in a drum mag for the m4. Probably be 100 rounds. I'm getting sick of high capacity mags. At least wait till there's more variety of weapons in. Makes reloading/fights super dull, I wish 30 round mags were the max. Also, really goes against the whole scarcity thing. Look, I'm not saying they should never be included (though I'd be fine with that, leave it for LMGs to be high capacity ammo weapons) but they could at least wait. So bye infinite ammo mags with the wipe (hopefully) and hello their legitimate "replacement." -
You can bind hold breath to 2-3 separate keys, and holding them all steadies your aim even further. Holding your breath normally steadies it pretty well, but there's still a slight sway, but binding multiple keys essentially stacks the effect, making it completely steady. This isn't actually intentional, and it's going to be fixed. The default settings have RMB both holding breath and zooming in. Binding them to separate keys, so that you aren't necessarily holding your breath every time you want to zoom in is a legit thing, and people suggest it (I don't personally do it). It's just binding hold breath to multiple keys to stack the effect that is a glitch/exploit. Hope that clarifies.

Nothing looks pristine to me. All the windows are always broken, the paints always peeling, there's blood stains etc. Also, the airfield sorta does look like that, there's bushes all over the place. Maybe your settings are too low or something?
-
Hmm, I don't remember it making a return but it's entirely possible. Sniping was pretty messed up for a while, not showing impacts at all past about 100m or so. Perhaps it was to do with that? Either way, yeah it's fixed now.
-
It was fixed quite some time ago (months). I don't remember if it was specifically stated in patch notes or not.
-
Binding multiple keys is a glitch/exploit that's going to be addressed soon, so I'd advise against using it. Not only because it's exploiting, but because you don't want to get used to it and then have to relearn to snipe when it's fixed (supposed to be fixed next patch in fact). What I recommend is using + and - on the numpad, to zoom in and out. This has the added benefit of letting you zoom in, in increments, as well as not having to hold your breath while you aim, leaving you ready to hold it when you're actually ready to shoot. Then just right click to steady as usual. As stated, getting hit at all, regardless of a fracture basically messes up your sway and you should use a splint/morphine. The difference is huge. Good luck!
-
It's called gas station roulette for a reason. It's sorta random. Though a couple patches ago it got significantly less so, and generally only takes a few hits if that.
-
The respawn mechanic blows, I hope they change it soon. It's like the most basic, stupid, way to implement it.

What's the current hacking status like in DayZ:SA?
Bororm replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
I'm a bit skeptical too but the system message about combat logging being an act of cowardice is one I've seen often on a server I frequent. Don't remember which one specifically, just that I've seen that exact message before... Pretty awful if it's legit. Definitely seen some of that stuff/had it happen, but not the forcing animations and wasn't aware of stealing player's vision etc. -

Bororm replied to RadikulRAM's topic in General Discussion
I kinda believe the whole it's a glitch thing, because as mentioned that is seemingly the default spawn, and you can actually get that spawn some times and end up completely naked there with your character reset (used to be to the white male) and full hydrated/energized. However, I don't think it ends there, and even if a glitch it's one that's being intentionally triggered. "Hack" or not, it's still something being done by "cheaters" imo, even if it's closer to the spectrum to wall glitching or duping than 3rd party hacks.
