  1. Eh, I think it's fine to draw a line on wall penetration. Arma 2 epoch/overpoch devolved into machine gun spraying houses and people calling it "wall banging." I think some expanded penetration mechanics would be nice, and hopefully we won't see the prevalence of LMGs we saw in the mod but I don't want to see pvp devolve into just spraying houses from outside.

Is the double barrel broken again?

Well I just spent close to 2 hours trying to find a double barrel but couldn't so I'm giving up on that for now. I did find a pump shotgun so I'll have something to compare it to when I do find one at least. It's probably not even worth testing since it sounds like the way guns work in general is going to change some what soon, especially considering how often they seem to fuck it up (still not saying for certain it is fucked up again).

What is your play style and goals?

I pretty much play however I feel like at that moment. I normally play in a group in the SA. In the mod I started out lone wolfing mainly because I didn't have friends to play with, I've seen made a good amount of buddies and find myself rarely playing the SA solo unless it's just to gear up in preparation of playing together again. I do think there's something more to playing solo though, and I used to highly encourage new players to play solo first so they don't miss out on that experience. I primarily play to pvp, and I primarily KOS. But it again depends on the situation. If I come upon a guy where he isn't an immediate threat, and we're in close enough proximity to talk and he seems cool then I will let him go. If he gets lippy with me I will probably shoot him. Our group has also robbed people rather than killing them on numerous occasions, it all just depends on the situation. The majority of the time it is KOS though. I don't care about dying at all. A slight inconvenience dying away from my group and no one likes to die to hackers but it doesn't get to me. I don't try to survive, if I'm geared out it means I probably need to die. I generally prefer either sniping or using the double barrel. I like to try to put restrictions on myself like using pistols only or whatever. The reason I started using the double barrel in the mod was because most people considered it the worst gun. I found it to actually be really effective. I take a similar approach to clothing and I'd rather look goofy/stylish then wear all mil/camo. I never wear shoes for fun, and generally pick bright colors. I lean more towards minimalist than hoarder. My group usually gravitates towards one area of the map and plays there for a bit, switching up that area as it suits us. Might spend a lot of time in elektro pvping, then be at the nwaf the next week/few days, then some where else. I think a good player is some one who has fun first and foremost. If you are stressing about being awesome and getting the best loot and coming out on top every time to the point of getting frustrated etc then I don't think you're a good player. You could be the best pvper around but if you're not actually having fun then what's the point?

Is the double barrel broken again?

When you guys hit zombies what does the blood shot pattern look like. It just seems like it isn't a spread to me with the normal double barrel. They do seem to drop in one hit though. I'm talking about the current patch =P
  5. Bullets do go through some walls ;)
  6. It'd be nice to see some variations on the time to do stuff for sure. That could actually be a decent way of replicating that you could open a can and not lose a lot of content if you're careful, with various tools. They've mentioned that they want to make it so you hold down a button to start some animations/tasks then simply stop to cancel it. So it would be a potentially cool idea that if you held down the button/animation to start opening a can on a pickaxe as per your example, the longer you held it the less contents you'd lose. If you wanted to just be quick and dirty about it and essentially smash it open then you could simply not play the animation for very long. Some random factor would still be nice as part of it though, so you can't just figure out the most efficient way to do something every single time (potentially ending up with using some weird tool being more efficient than a can opener).

Just returned after almost a year...

I'm not sure what you're expecting to change. The mod has been out a few years now, and at its core it's still the same game with more content. This is essentially how the SA will be. The core functionality is there, gameplay isn't going to become drastically different. More vehicles/vehicle types will be added and things like persistence will get ironed out as well as numerous bugs. But if you're expecting a different experience altogether, it's not going to happen.

Wait for host and other server crashes

Server stability is really funky lately. It could be related to a glitch I heard about where admins can guarantee themselves a vybor spawn, but I dunno. Might also be related to hackers imo, as I often experience right when I get in a fight with shady characters quite frequently. Of course that could just be coincidence. I think something is causing crashes/periods of desync though.
  9. Not to be a downer but saying it should be more like the medieval games out there doesn't really do anything. The devs have stated from the start that they'd like that too, but there's a huge difference between these kinda games. Lag already plays a huge role in games like chivalry/mount and blade/war of the roses, to the point of giving a huge advantage to those with better ping. DayZ's server architecture is incredibly more complex than any of these games and those problems will just be compounded. The result being, if you simply toss in a system with blocks and parries and all that sorta shit into DayZ as it stands it would be a total mess and miserable. You think it's bad now, making it more complex isn't going to help. Not yet any ways.

How to drive uphill in truck?

    Go uphill backwards.
  11. Melee could use some love but I don't agree that it poses little threat against fire arms right now. Depending on the gun I have, there's times where I'll just straight up run from melee. Trying to hit a point blank target with any of the low capacity/low rate of fire guns is pretty hard, and all it takes is two axe hits to die. I had a fight against an armed guy and a guy with a stun baton not too long ago. I had a magnum. I killed the armed guy first and had time to reload, but his buddy came running around a corner and knocked me out in a single stun baton hit. Of course the effectiveness is currently in large part due to desync and ridiculous run speeds, both of which will hopefully be reduced later on. At which point melee will probably take an inadvertent nerf. However, as long as 1-2 hit kills/knockouts exist with it, I think it will always be viable.
  12. Realism isn't the same as features. You could have a game that only does a single thing, in a realistic manner, and it would be the most realistic game. I liked Rocket's stance of authenticity rather than realism and I think they're doing a good job with that. I think opening cans is a decent example to look at. You could sit around and say you could open a can with anything, but after a point it just becomes ridiculous. They let you use a ton of tools to open cans to varying degrees and it makes for decent gameplay while still being believable. People would probably argue "it's not realistic, I can open a can with a pickaxe without spilling any of it" but unless you're going to take the time to make a can opening simulator a line has to be drawn due to limits of technology/time/resources, so throwing in a random % based on the tool works just fine. At the end of the day, even if it leans heavily towards simulation, the SA is still a game. I'm sure we'd all love a completely realistic simulation of the world in a fully multiplayer environment but it's not going to happen any time soon.
  13. Besides the lack of vehicles/long term persistence the SA actually arguably has more content at this point than the mod (it definitely has more items). At least, since the last time I played the mod any ways (not talking mods of the mod). Of course, vehicles and persistence are pretty big. But they're both implemented in a very basic state already.

    pso-1 scope?

For the pso-1 and the long range scope it doesn't matter if they're damaged as long as they aren't ruined currently. Being able to repair them would be nice for when it does eventually matter though, and for the other scopes where it already does.

    Strange behavior with V3S truck

You can be shot out of it through the windows/windshield, some one could also potentially open the door and shoot you.
  16. The comments in this thread about people not making videos/streaming because it wouldn't get interest makes me sad. Why does it have to be about views? I upload a lot of DayZ videos, I don't play stealthy so they're not gonna interest the OP, but I just upload them primarily for myself for the future, so I can look back at good times and along the same lines for my group. Also, to learn from my encounters. I only get about 15 views a video (primarily my group) and only have about 40 subscribers, but it doesn't bother me at all. I don't tag them, I don't care. I've uploaded a couple that got 10,000 views, and while the novelty of that is nice it really doesn't matter to me. Maybe there's some one out there doing the same OP, I unfortunately don't know of any stealthy ones. MrBlackOut's hardcore series of videos almost falls in line with what you want, he at least tries to stay alive and plays rather cautiously but he does engage most of the people he sees that don't appear friendly (he makes friends with a lot of people too). He definitely isn't pure stealth though.

    The reason behind KoS: ?

For fun because it's a video game and it's supposed to be fun, for me.

    Clans treating DayZ like ARMA?

I can't speak for everyone, but to me there's a huge difference between a game like dayz and something like arma. Unless people are duping/cheating, the people gearing out in mil gear are still gearing up. And killing other players is still depriving them of an investment. That investment goes both ways. The appeal is that you have more to gain and lose compared to a game like arma where everyone gets the same gear from the start. There's a bizarre notion that has taken over gaming imo, in that when it comes to pvp every fight should be fair and a strange fascination on "competitive" gaming. This isn't what everyone wants, this isn't what I pvp for. I want to fight people who have an advantage over me, or I want to be that person with an advantage over them. Saying that there's no challenge there, that you should go play arma is, to me, exactly the opposite of what this is. It's more challenging to me to have to go find myself a gun, ammo, supplies and go fight people than to just jump into a match of king of the hill. Where kills don't mean anything, where there's no investment. That's not what I'm into. What you guys are all basically complaining about is that some players are more organized than you. That's a ridiculous gripe, the game shouldn't be changed because of that. These players are going to exist regardless. You take it down to melee only, and guess what, there's going to be organized groups with fire axes chopping you to bits. Are you going to tell them to go play chivalry or mount and blade at that point? My point will still stand, that you have more investment in dayz than even those games. PvP makes DayZ. Risk vs reward is the appeal. Ironically, the people telling players who enjoy pvp to go play another game are in fact the ones who don't "get" the game. If they did, they'd realize these differences. And btw, I've frozen to death while being pinned down. I've had my group ambushed while trying to stay warm at a fire, resulting in one of our funnest fights recently. I can't tell you how many times I've been jumped while drinking at fountains. Survival shit is in there too, and it makes it all the funner. There's room for everything. This right here is the more interesting topic. The reason people gear out in mil gear is because it's the best shit. That's realistic, but its a topic that should be addressed. You can get full camo and not have to worry about the weather any more, while having the most inventory space and protection. There's no downside at all besides style points (and to clarify my stance, I don't even use mil gear. I think it's boring)
  19. This is actually an excellent idea and way to go about it. I just posed the question of run speed in the design section, hopefully we can get a response. I'll link this thread in my post.

It's over the holidays, which he actually said on the tweet =P I dig these maps, they're interesting.

    I dont get the reason

Why does anyone do anything? Why are you searching for weapons? Why are you playing the game? Because on some level, it's fun. Fun is subjective. Your idea of fun doesn't align with these people I guess. That's perfectly OK, everyone has their own kind of fun. But you must be tolerant of other people's types of fun as long as they fall within the confines of the game (cheaters can go fuck themselves). Play to have fun for yourself, and don't worry about other people's motives. You are responsible for your own good time, no one else is.
  22. My biggest concern is that with Rocket gone the team might try to curve too many behaviors/take the game in a slightly different enough direction to lose a bit of what made it special. I think there's an underlying current of this already happening with sniping, where they seem to want to regulate it to an unfounded degree by holding off putting in any sniper rifles until the loot economy is done. I don't think it's an inherently bad decision and could turn out alright, as I don't think sniper rifles should be super common, but no other weapons are currently being regulated in the same way so it makes me worry a bit about the motives behind it more than the act itself. I think trying to curve specific behaviors to a high degree just goes against the essence of the game. Why is a 75 round drum mag acceptable but a 10 round sniper rifle isn't? We'll have to wait and see. Aside from that example, talk of dynamic events has me cautiously optimistic. I really don't want to see anything like ai convoys or helicopters flying before they crash because it takes away from the experience of seeing vehicles and knowing they are player driven and all the excitement that comes with that. While various versions of the mod had flying helicopters to shoot down which were some what cool, I felt they really detracted from those moments where you hear a helicopter and know its a player/group and have no idea what their intentions are going to be. Instead it became "heliocopter! oh, it's ai :[" I think that again, this is something Rocket really understood and I just hope the team can continue this line. There's no real indication they will stray from this but it's something I worry about because the majority of people don't put a lot of thought into this sort of thing and just think "it's fun and cool to shoot down helicopters!" and hopefully the team doesn't just concede. Those types of things are my concern more so than bugs and that sorta stuff. The game losing its core elements. So far so good though, and there's a lot of positive talk from the team that makes me think they'll hold true.

    Clarification on "Base Building"

I agree with that part, but that's simply because it was badly implemented. I trust the dayz team to keep things "grounded" in this case. The people I'm referring to are the ones who simply don't want building/construction just because they personally don't enjoy it. The people saying "if I wanted to play minecraft, I'd play minecraft" it's the equivalent of people saying "if you wanna shoot people go play cod." This game's a sandbox and has room for everything. I can't speak for him, but bases add all kinds of stuff. They help form communities. By giving you a "permanent" home you are compelled to play a single or at least limited amount of servers. This creates community in the broader sense that players become regulars on a server. Beyond that it creates communities in the literal in game sense that base building usually takes a group of individuals to create and maintain. This creates team work on a basic level. There's possibilities for small settlements (there's precedence in other games for this, we already see this to a degree on RP dayz servers as is). Giving people a sense of permanence creates interesting scenarios, both peaceful and for pvp. If you know where an enemy's base is, there's opportunity for feuds and rivalries to be created which for some people are the funnest forms of pvp as they carry more weight. In ultima online, fighting people at their houses was a huge part of the game and tons of fun. Assaulting and defending bases on a very basic level is extremely fun besides. They also create the opportunity for RP or more peaceful scenarios such as trading or places to help out other players. This gives those who aren't necessarily into pvp something to do. They'll nearly assuredly be attacked at some point, but assuming you have a strong enough group it leaves room for individuals to pursue whatever they're into while others guard. It gives long term goals for those who want them. As it stands, you gear up and go die, repeat. Bases don't build and stock themselves and will likely be constantly in turmoil unless a group is strong enough, creating endless potential for things to do. All of this is if you decide to take part in it, it's not forced on anyone.

    Player bases you found

My friend and I found a stash in cherno, behind a locked door in one of the cafes. I dunno how long it was there and doubt it would last long but it was pretty cool and the first time I've actually seen that. There wasn't anything particularly good but I relocked the door when we left.
