This right here, if I take a chance to group with a random, I always give them a 'chance' to betray me and act accordingly. You can usually tell when you talk to someone, but even then you can't be sure.

You'll get no argument from me regarding most players' suicidal tendencies when popping off with an AR. :D Though I've seen that behavior with people who had the shotgun but you have a point in that it gives the less experienced players out there a sense of safety that causes them to play stupid.

Why not take a Mosin then? Having only two shots is a terrible liability in battle. 7.62x39 is as common as finding the Moisin 7.62 ammo that the Blaze uses, I have no trouble keeping my AKM fed.

You're dreaming. The Blaze is a filler piece of garbage, to be dropped for pretty much anything else. The AKM and M4 are more than capable in any of those roles, and with a scope and a skilled hand make fine medium range marksman rifles. I've dropped people at 400meters with both and have no problem dropping animals with the same. They truly are 'jack of all trades' guns because the only role they don't do well is long range sniping, everything else from PVP to hunting they excel. I would carry a AKM over any other gun in the game if I had to choose.

If it was good enough for Vasili Zaitsev, it should be good enough for us. Seriously, that's what Soviet snipers had to use in WW2, and they did fine.

Haven't noticed FPS drop in rain, but I don't care for playing in constant rain as the 'white noise' of the rainfall is just so frakking loud I can't take it after a while. Ambient wind gets annoying too, but damn that rain is just headphone-filling noise.

I haven't been losing my whole character, but lately something is gone from my pack every time I log in. Yesterday it was a protector case with a LRS, PU scope, moisin compensator and a rangefinder. It was pretty awesome losing my sniper support kit, let me tell you. The day before that it was a 75 rd drum mag. Why couldn't it be that can of beans or that extra stick? Nope it had to be my most prized loot. :D

I think I'll play around with this a bit more, take my chances as a psycho on the coast for a while and if I'm still alive find a persistent server to hide my stuff in and get it back after respawn. I feel the onset of the prion disease is far too fast, far too likely to happen in the first place and too severe, but it still makes me jump every time my character starts making those creepy sounds.

Agreed. Common stuff like netting would be in almost every tool shed in existance. It's just an artificial limit to keep the amount of ghillies down.

Barring experience, you don't really. No mil-dots or range guides on that scope. You can use the in game steam browser, call up the dayzDB map and use their range tool, or find a rangefinder + battery to do it in game.

I just leave my gorka gear on and take a dip in a pond. Cools you off quite well and the water does not damage your gear. (yet)

You'll find the DayZ community is both very helpful and very unforgiving at the same time. A new guy, honestly looking for help learning the game is always welcome; we've invested both money and time into this project and want as many active players as possible. But once you're settled, if you meet 75% of us off the coast you'll likely be killed or robbed at the very least. So with that in mind, rule #1 is DONT GET ATTACHED TO YOUR GEAR, rule #2 is DONT GET ATTACHED TO YOUR GEAR. You will gear up. You will be killed. Accept this and treat each time you die as a learning experience. The Army mantra of react, adapt and overcome is very appropriate to DayZ. Have fun bro!

M4s only spawn at NATO chopper crash sites these days, but you'll be better off with an AK series rifle anyways. Much more common ammo, and the AKM is just a beast. The notations on the DayZ DB map do not translate in game, they are useful for gauging ranges for sniping and general distance measuring.

Make sure you have a mic and use it around other players. Most will at least give you a chance if you talk to them first. If spoken to, reply as silence freaks people out and will earn you a bullet. When melee fighting zeds without a weapon, go to 1st person view, it's easier to land headshots with your fists that way. For now, you can drink from ponds/lakes/streams, do so as the water pumps are broken and you can't always rely on pop. other tips tear shirts into rags as bandages best melee weapon are axes, avoid pitchforks as they are useless you can forage fruit and berries from trees and bushes avoid 'bandit' gear like payday masks, welding masks head inland asap, and start learning the map military camps are generally KOS zones

I'm looking forward to snow covered maps at some point. Perfect weather to open up a roadside grill to cook up some mystery meat for tired survivors on the coastal highway.

My buddy ruined three leather jackets I was wearing in one day doing that. I kept lucking out and finding another one, only for him to axe me during a melee. Never took any damage though. It was pretty funny.
