When are you really gonna to stop OFF-MAP vehicle hoarders!!
Demon20 replied to BossFi's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
How about populate the "off map" with more villages, a big ass city (biggest one on the map), more buildings, an actual FOB with the chance for a HMMWV spawn, etc. That way you don't have "off" map. :) -
Yes. I don't know what they have. Unless I "watched" them spawn and have had eyes on them the whole time...I don't know what they have or don't have. They could have a hatchet on the ol' tool belt and then pull it out and kill me with it. Could have a pistol in their pack...and a flashlight in their hand trying to look all "nooby". I don't trust people. I don't even trust the guys I play with on occassion...they life in another state. Sure, one's a coworker, but his friend keeps eyein' my alice pack...so...you gotta watch your beans man. It ain't safe out there. Out.

Well...maybe Rocket should add that in to the next patch. Cargo plane crash sites would be cool. Very cool. Go hacker go!!!. Out. -
Why do my tents keep getting discovered?
Demon20 replied to suspectmammal's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yep. Finding other people's stuff has become a fun past time. So, yeah, there's really no security. But then that's really life. But then again, it's hard to say what exactly is the probelm. Tents come and go now...they're there, got stuff, saved, server restart, they're gone. A couple restarts later they're back but with different stuff. Some times they are bugged and you can't add anything...but the good news is you'll never run out of NVG's because the same two pair are there every time the server restarts. That last parts not as fun as it sounds...I swore to the gods I had put another DMR and the ammo I found in one of our tents...but it wasn't there. It wasn't until a couple days later when I KNEW I had put that AK74 I had picked up after a new life...only to find it gone and all the same stuff in there that I figured out that tent was bugged and was never gonna let me add stuff. Vehicles come and go to. So, it's hard to tell...hackers? Bugs? Raiders? Can't really answer until the tent and vehicle bugs are fixed (hopefully in the mod for some stability for other features to be worked out for the stand alone). I don't hackers...they don't need to raid your stuff. Besides, thunderdoming and letting you do some HALO without a parachute seems more interesting. As far as where you are placing them? Yeah...good luck with that. Every one looks for them. And that 70's washed out woodland texture is really easy to spot...so...it's kinda a fun game to look for them. As an aside, I would like to see a better tent texture, or textures...and I would love some camo netting to. Real cmo netting...the kind that jacks with IR. Oh...that would be a nice addition to the camo clothes - IR resistent (and after I jacked with that guy about him wanting to make camo clothes specialer). Out. -
"The game will be released in an Alpha build for a low price point"

He's gonna buy it. And he's gonna bitch about it. And we are going to make fun of him. And the loop will continue just as it has here. Life will go on. Out. -
Yep. What he said. Plus what I am going to say: I have found camo clothing 4 times in 4 weeks of play. Each time I have died and lost it, only to actually wish I had it back as soon as I spawned in wearing a bright baby blue shirt that can be seen for miles away, even in a town full of colors. I have found them on atrain, on a plane, in a house, with a mouse...no seriously. I have found them in a house. I have found them in another house. I have found them in another another house. And yes...on a downed helipcopter (latest set). They are not really what I would call "rare". And as I quoted above...they are a wonderful "middle" between crap that sticks out like a sore thumb (unless you get the random coolness of a black ensemble instead of baby blue/dark blue or white/grey) and walking tree. I like them. I have lived longest when wearing them. When this puppy drops stand alone alpha, I hope to see various types of camo clothing skin. Would actually love to have seperate options...say, pants, shirt, jacket...hat. That way I could pickup different pieces off the dead (if it's not tore up...ergo infected or has holes from the bullets I just put in a guy who had a nice set of Multicam on or old school duck hunting gear). I don't think they need to be changed in the mod at all. And no...they don't need to be made "special" to compete when it is already specialer (yeah...I made that word up) than civilain clothing and not as special full blown ghillie lovin'. As far as your "inventory" slots bit. Sure, if you want to add "pockets" I wouldn't complian. Back in the day I kept all kinds of crap in my side pockets. Usually something soft like pogey bait or a book or the rest of an MRE I was working on. Never anything hard, like a magazine if I expected to be landing on my sides...but hey...I wouldn't complain if I had extra couple slots of beans. Out.

It's the same tale. Unicorns, bigfoot, a free market economy and hackers killing you in DayZ. I didn't think I'd ever see or be a party to an actual, honest to goodness hack. I would read all of your stories, eagerly lapping up each work and curse. Hoping beyond hope that one day, I to could experience such a thing. I had actually given up hope. Thought I was being mislead. Wondered if I wasn't worthy of such special attention. Well...I wonder no more. Apparently I passed some test I didn't know I took. Me and my closest fifteen or so friends on the server I play regularly on were all teleported some where and dropped from a very high altitude. It was strangely exhilorating. Almost like other wordly. Until the crack of bone and flesh and the death screen woke me up. Then I just thought it was lame. Just lame. But hey...my cherry was busted so now I feel like an official DayZ player. Go me. Out.

Yes. NIckovitschj, you'll have to pay. I could go on and on about the Free Market, and people liking to be compensated for their work, etc, but I wont bother you with that. Out.

I have only found 1 DMR in a Deer Stand. And I have looted Deer Stands pretty regularly every day for the 3.5 weeks I have played. So...yeah feels a bit like .19%. But in that same time I have actually found 2 M24's (Deer Stands) and 3 AS50's (Helicopter Crash Sites). Passed on all those at the time because of ammo constraints. I am carrying the DMR I found now, I had one before as a hand me down from a guy I play with occasionally after I found the last AS50. The DMR works with NVGs which is a big plus. Out.

Yes. It is true. Watched a guy low crawl through a grazzy field for about a total of 600m, he stuck out like he was running. The only thing stopping me from killing him was the lack of the right tool for the job (new life - M1014). But he was exposed. Sure, he was staying off the zombie radar, but I could see him through my binos like there wasn't a single blade of grass. Out.

The tactical significance of sniper rifles, accumulated rebuttals and why they're here to stay

I guess that's why I never find the motorcycles where the maps say they should be. :(

Where are the zombie hordes?
Demon20 replied to ruecanonrails's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't think 100-200 is necessary at this stage of development. Perhaps something like +20-30 that spawn at a random location and then move off at a random speed between walking and running (crazy zombie olympic running) on a random azimuth until they hit the edge of the map (where they re-random their azimuth and start over) or they are all killed/come across players. I think a nice "test" horde of 20-30 in size, moving together until they hit players would do the trick to test the concept. And doing so through wooded areas or augmenting other zombies already in play within X range would be cool. Perhaps a check to see if they run across other zombies, they could change their azimuth of travel towards those zombies, say if you the player(s) trip zombies in a town and the horde comes within 200 meters of the zombies you spawned, it would alter their travel towards those other zombies. A test horde would be cool. Out. -
'OP' Guns and the Future of Dayz
Demon20 replied to tarquinbb's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Thank you for bringing up the "batteries" option. That's the elephant in the room. Power. NVGs, Range Finders. Thermal Optics. Flashlights. GPS devices. All require batteries. There's the first thing that I would do after fixing duping. Make these things require batteries. I know that I am not alone, but ask any guy that has spent time with this kind of gear plus radios and you will find out exactly how many batteries and extra batteries you have to hump in just to get this crap to work in the first place. Yep. Don't play by yourself. Scout better. Get better tactics. Tactics are more important than weapons. Numbers are also. Ask the British about superior weapons...the Zulus still killed them because they had more numbers. And another piece of the puzzle. Look, the answer OP isn't removing weapons for the game. Nor is it about "balance". You can't balance a .50 round versus .223. It's not possible. Here's the truth of the matter, Chris Kyle, America's current best sniper got the vast majority of his kills using .338 and .380 win mag...not .50. Admits in his book he's not a fan of the .50 systems. Yes, he used it, trained it, etc., but wasn't found of it. Not flexible, etc. He speaks candidly about the weapon systems he used and why. It all points to versality. .50 weapon systems are not flexible. The question about "9mm to the chest"...you'll die? Not true. People survive gun shots all the time. Even in war. I have said it before, I'll say it again, if you don't put that 9mm, or .45, or 5.56mm or even 7.62mm in the "right" place, you will get nothing but a bleeding target. Bleeding can be stopped. What kills? A bullet to a vital point. The head. The spine. The lungs. The heart. A major artery in the leg or chest. The odds of doing that? Slimmer than you think. You can't balance that like you think. That's why the .50 works as a single shot kill...it's ballistic energy and damage potential means you don't have to be any more exact than a hit. Every other round requires a vital point being hit. The answer to the problem you want fixed OP is simple. D, all of the above. Fix duping. Fix infinite ammo. Make ammo fit its "rareness". Yes, .22 is going to be very common. But so is everything else but specialty ammo. Hate to break it to you, but the world is full of everything. Millions of rounds of 9mm, .40, .45, 5.56mm 7.62, .308...etc. What's rare? .50, 6.5mm, etc. And that's rare in comparison to other ammunition types...not rare in comparison to whether they exist or not. Then for some spite, make batteries required. Make them come in two types...rechargable and not. Throw in tools for solar systems, gasification, bicycle & alternators, generators, etc...let me recharge some batteries and make them required for range finders, thermal optics, power optics, gps...etc. Couple that with some durability and chance of weapon system failure and then you don't have a problem. But in the end brother, you're still gonna die. Death will still be there. Because people will make their way from survivor to striver and they'll have the batteries and the spare barrels and the replacement springs and they'll have found enough ammo...and will guard it and use it wisely...and then they will shoot you. And you'll be right back where you are now. Out. -
Destroying a huge camp up north (sorry cheaters)
Demon20 replied to deadzen's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's already been said, but damn if I can help myself: Exactly what proof did you have other than camp location? And to be honest, I am not to terribly sure why you shared with so little proof. You took the time to open the bus inventory, which isn't out of bounds...I have found 3 AS50's and my friends have found a couple range finders. All legit. I passed on the AS50s because I like to keep a lower profile, not all boss beast and shit. A guy I play with is torn at that. Wants to be more incognito...but likes the damage...but I digress. Op, I would have loved to have seen some inventory from the tents to help you prove your case...but right now I just think you're lame. Sorry brother...and yeah...I think it's for fun that you are lame. Out. -
It deters me from getting into the area to get the goods. So...I take them all down. I like my tool box. Just did this a few minutes ago on the server I play on. Whole place was wired up. Entrance. Exit. Every building. It was a good time...shooting zeds in the head and tearing down concertina wire. Out.

I have broken my leg going prone off a firehouse. Rolling off the stairs in a barn. Falling off the 2nd level of a farm. I have broke my leg when I crashed a tracker and the explosion launched me 30m out the windshield. I have had zombies break my legs in one hit at full health, no other damage. I have gotten my legs broke from people shooting me. But I have never had a door break my leg. And the door you mention didn't do it the three or four times I have opened it. I don't know what to say brother. Maybe the door just hates you. Sorry to see you go though. Out.

A relevant quote for those that play DayZ
Demon20 replied to soapmak3r's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
“You should not have any special fondness for a particular weapon, or anything else, for that matter. Too much is the same as not enough. Without imitating anyone else, you should have as much weaponry as suits you.” ― Miyamoto Musashi And Bernard Shaw was a flaming Fabian Socialist, who's ultimate goal was for each man to prove the worth of his life, or be removed from society as he had no worth to it. If he played DayZ, he would have asked each new "man" what worth he had, then kill them because you don't even have beans when you respawn. Out. -
In a real life situation like DayZ, 'basic' weapons would be very common.
Demon20 replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
And you say you want to fix things before adding more. ;) You are right though...that would be sweet. And quite realistic. There are millions of mines still in the dirt blowing up little starving kids on their way to schools in all the worlds best jungles and deserts...it would be sweet if DayZ would let me repurpose them into new mines or IEDs. Between looted anit-personnel explosives, dug up mines and repurposed supplies...we could have some serious fun. Ultimately it would be cool to come across weapons caches with 155 or 122 artillery rounds that could be repurposed and used for IEDs or VIBEDs. Not sure how kosher that is considering the worlds hotspots...but it would make for a varity rich game...uh...simulation. Out -
See...you don't need expense therapy, you're working through your issues just fine. Out

"If you want to start bitching about realism in it then why oh why is there so many Lee-Enfields in a former Soviet country and no Mosin-Nagants?" Good question sir. There's reportly some 7 million Mosins that are NOS. Some friends and I are looking at buying a crate (you end up getting each gun for about $60 us that way. There are litterally millions still in the boxes, cosmoline and ready to go, never fired. Guns are not rare in the world. Only harder to get in countries with harsher gun control laws. Here in the southern US, there are something like 10 guns for every person. And more ammo than you can shake a stick at. I got close to 1200 7.62x39 and I don't even count as a serious ammo prepper. In such a world and time as DayZ is trying to set, the guns won't be the problem. Ammo would. And as long as the game spawns ammo, it's not an issue (even without duping). In a real world scenario, the ammo would dry up. Even the people I know who have tens of thousands of rounds for each of their guns, it would eventually dry up. And modern powder isn't the kind of thing you can mix up at the kitchen table. Takes chemistry at a refinery level. So for all intents and purposes, once that huge supply dried up...that'd be that. In time people would return to that level of gun powder production, but I wouldn't be surprised if for 50 or 100 years black powder wouldn't be king. But no, their should be Mosins instead of Enfields for this world. But if I had all the money and talent in the world and DayZ was my project...I'd have a huge world with a huge map where in one part of the world the Enfield would be common, another the Mosin and another the Springfield 1903. That's just me. Out -

Demon20 replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You make a few assumptions there brother... First, modern militaries train melee, just because they don't have "swords, shields and spears" doesn't mean that they don't. In fact, you'll find that training hand to hand, augmented with knives, entrenching tools and even tomahawks are common place. And there is ample evidence to support all modes of combat in the field, from a bayonet charge by the British Princess fo Wales Royal Regiment in Basra I believe, to knife fights on the ground in Mosul by the U.S. Army's 25th ID. U.S. Army and Marine units are actively training and carrying modern tomahawks, and have used them in combat. The British Gurkha's still deploy with kukri's. And are quite formidable with them. Melee, augmented and unaugmented is a corner stone of modern militaries. One that you can not make assumptions about. No, this isn't the British Black Watch Regiment firing a volley from their smoothbores then dropping them, and in mass charging with their one handed "claymores" and targ shields at Waterloo, but it counts. You are right though, I would LOVE a better "melee" system in DayZ as well. I understand that the Arma 2 engine isn't "pro" melee so there's some work that is needed. Not sure if the RV4 engine will support it any better. But I think that to be closer to "reality", a melee system that allows for me to inventory a primary melee weapon and swap it easily would be nice. It's not a stretch to have a kit that allows for very smooth and fast access to a combat knife (vest, belt, boot) and a tomahawk or machette (short sword) on a pack or side. That's the first issue, inventory of it, no doubt that will take work on Rocket's side. Second issue is item swap management, it needs to be accessible just as all weapon and thrown items are now. And lastly is damage. Melee weapons usually do not fall into the damage system well. The hatchet is great in Dayz, but the crowbar is lagging. A head shot from a crowbar will likely end your day if you do not have a ballistic helmet. Melee weapons do a lot of damage, but it's specific to their use. At any rate, that's my 2 beans worth. Would love to see a good melee system in place. Pipes, crowbars, hatchets and 'hawks (thrown as well), two-handed axes, sledge hammers, ball-peen hammers, knives (thrown as well) in all shapes...combat knives...fairbanks for stealth kills, bricks (yes...brick to the head...and even thrown), bayonets on rifles, butt strokes from larger rifles, 2x4's, baseball bats...etc. I would love to see all of that, good damage balance, good control of inventory, good UI...it would rock. Standalone by September? No chance
Demon20 replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This is just a guess, but Real Virtuality 4 is probably either done and stable or near done and stable enough to start building a stand alone game on. Also, it's a safe guess, that the new art and script assets are already in place and since maps and content are being built for ARMA 3, and those assets are available to Rocket. Based on those guesses, it makes pretty good sense, considering the relationship between Rocket and BI, and the tons of cash he has just made them...that they may be starting talks or done talking and have a deal already set in place that is allowing DayZ to already be developing a stand alone game on their new engine and using their assets, or near ready to do so. Since we know he loves the Minecraft model, and that all the artwork and assets are already done by BI, and more than likely already work 100% in RV4, or will with very little effort...I don't see September as too out of bounds. I don't know BI, or Rocket, and I am new to ARMA, but people being people...I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Dean Hall, an employee of BI, has been moved over to a new project, a stand alone game built on RV4 and using already constructe art assets and script for ARMA3. That he and his new team are working out game play and creating new, game specific assets and that he and BI will release a stand alone game using the Minecraft economic model. Infact, I wouldn't be surprised if the ONLY decision they have left to conclude is whether DayZ will be a stand alone BI product released with a pay to play Alpha model...or a final finished Dayz mod release with ARMA3. I for one would rather it as a stand alone game. Do keep in mind those are just my best guesses based on interviews and my experience with humans. Out
