A light dissertation on Morality in DayZ

Punishment alone has litte to do with morality. Morality is not avoiding things that you specifically get punished and doing things that get you rewarded. The base of morality is in evolution and genetics. Altruistic behavior, care for your offspring, teamwork are all consepts that in the course of evolution have enabled species to survive. These patterns are present and lodged in our genetic makeup even today. Society will impose it own moral codes upon you but it does not erase the basis of moral behavior that is in biology. Same basic behaviour patterns are observed in animals and in all human societies. Now in Dayz the emphasis should be on survival. Teamwork is the key for individuals survival in apocalyptic scenario. The game does not at present model the hard and near impossible task of surviving alone in this type of setting. Time and energy used to gather food versus the gained nutritional value, effects of even minor injuries to your daily operational level, need for sleep and rest, limitations of how much weight you can carry and for how long, very long time and difficulty to heal from even a "normal" bullet wound including infections, difficulty how you should master skills and knowledge of sniper, hunter, gunsmith, mechanic, doctor, pilot, farmer and engineer just by yourself and difficulty to create, move and maintain shelter alone. Now these things are something that in the real world make teamwork near essential to survival. Lone wolves would be culled in time and surviving teams would band together to survive better. The somewhat romantic notion of lone wolf survivor is false and short lived. That the game does not impose full realistic and immersive difficulties of this type of playstyle is part of the reason the playstyle is more prominent than it would be. The reason for not implementing these could be technical or by design intent.

    FULL Medical / First aid

As for real life blood replenisment rates: 550 ml of blood takes ~3 days for lost plasma and ~36 days for red blood cells to recover. If this would be implemented to the game results are following: 12000 blood points are average equivalent of 5 litres of blood in human body. So 2400 points is 1 litre. Based on the the research 550 ml (1320 blood points) of lost blood replenishes in 51840 minutes (36d x 24h x 60 min). So realistic blood point recovery rate is 1 point in ~40 minutes of game time. Quite sure that if there will be any regeneration system it will be faster than this. My own preferance is slow healing, maybe 1 point per minute, possibly more if in good nutrition and water status. This means that in 8 hours of game time you will recover 480 points. And thats over two precious can of beans for free.

    Anti-Cheat Solution

Your posts have contributed very little to the topic and attacks to the form of argument (in this case the grammar) do not make the underlying argument invalid per se. Neither does attacking the person in the form of alleged inferior intellectual capability. You are aware that you are yourself writing everything in your posts without any capital letters?

If that is the logic this would create two types of servers, one with passwords and no hackers, the others without passwords and lots of hackers. The logical outcome of this is that undeniable majority of servers would be password protected after a while. After this period the hackers would "bother" to target the password protected servers as it would be the next norm. Hackers would be in the meantime probably even more likely to target those password servers as players in those servers could be more dedicate, and thus, possibly better material for hackers to get their lulz, trolololz, satisfaction or whatever.

If every server would be password protected and every server admin would be obligated to give the password for anyone that asks for it, how would this affect the hackers? How do you foresee that a player asking for a password is a hacker?

    Anti-Cheat Solution

Locking every server with password affects every player in the community. Hackers do not affect every player in the community. Hacking is a problem and must be dealt in some way but locking up every Dayz server behind an arbitrary password mechanism does only presents more problems than it tries to solve. As the things are now, yes, the viable options from server owners point of view are those two. One option is also to raise voice, contact the DayZ team and create pressure from the community to steer the game development in desired direction. The success in this is debatable and uncertain. If masses of server owners stop providing and shut down their servers, with notifications of hacking and lack of possibilities to counter the problem, it would undoubtly create pressure to fix the hacker problem. This however means that the problem is truly what it is alleged, hordes of hackers running rampart and destroying the game for the majority of the server owners/players. Until that point is apparent for the community, the status quo remains.

This suggestion would be fundamental change in the server policy. When starting to host/admin a server you agree to basic rules of DayZ hosting. One of them is that your server cant be password locked. What you are suggesting now could be never accepted as categorical imperative. If it would be accepted for you and your server, it should be accepted for everybody else. The harmfull possibilities for abuse, malevolent limiting and playerbase segregation in whole community far outweights the frustation of one server admin. While this is the state of DayZ for now, you have two acceptable options. First is to stop hosting and paying. The other is to clench you teeth, work with what you got and endure it. Like every other viable admin in the community. I do not pay to host my own server, possibly doing that in the future. Just pointing out that arguments Ad hominem do not negate or lessen the arguments of other people. That should be clear for everyone at this point?
  8. FIrst, not sure if trolling. Your high ping will have negative effect to other players game experience. Also, you want to be the one player with 400 ping. If 400 ping would be the norm, the whole server would be full of players with 300-400 ping. I dont think the server could handle that. Update your internet connection or join servers in your local area.
  9. Regarding the original subject, the idea is great. Chopping down trees should take several minutes instead of one second. The noise could be heard hundreds of meters away. In addition, the fresh wood cut from the forest should be damp and produce more smoke in the fireplace. Collected wood from barns etc. should be dry wood and burn better.

    Extended First Aid

Totally cool suggestions. Adding a few more: The first aid process should take more time. The couple of seconds it takes now is better than nothing but the bandaging should take several minutes. In addition bandaging yourself without any help, while you are bleeding, in pain and in darkness is a very hard task. This should encourage teaming up. The bandaged wounds should open up later if you are on your usual 5km run though Black Forest. Alcohol could be used to clean wounds and prevent infection.

    Secondary Melee Weapons

I was thinking this myself. Also would be a lot more efficient at gathering firewood. Maybe generating 5 or even 10 wood piles when used in the forest. The mechanism should be like the hatchet with charges that count down slowly when the chainsaw is running idle and ramp up when the saw is used. The chainsaw is not necessary the ultimate close combat weapon, as it is slow, requires two hands and connection to the target needs to be several seconds to create bone breaking damage. The chain is also prone getting stuck on bones and having a kickback effect. And if you want a chainsaw with some local Chernarus flavor there is Druzba:
  12. Couple of suggestions and notes about making fire and survival. Making Fire: The possibility to make fire is too scarce. The matches are very rare thng in the game. This could be a design intention of game balance vs. realism but I think that at least the most obvious ways of making fire should be implemented in the game. These would make more immerse survival experience. Obvious: Road flares Flares burn with very hot flame and can be used to start a fire. The flare is used up in the process. Smoke grenades Smoke grenades generate intense heat when activated. Even after use the casings are very hot. The grenade is used in the process and generates the usual smoke screen. Maybe with toolbox you could dismantle the grenade and activate the fire without the smoke screen. Possible: Shotguns Opening a shell casing and removing some pellets, then stuffing a cloth inside the casing. Fire to the ground and you have a burning piece of cloth. This could require a hunting knife or toolbox to open up casings. This method is not foolproof, generates noise and could take couple of attempts. Scopes Riflescopes could be used as magnifying glass in sunny weather to start fire. You could dismantle the scope to get a magnifying glass with toolbox, This method works only at broad daylight, takes time and destroys the scope. The possibility to make fire should depend on weather. It should be hard while raining, challenging after the rain, normal in dry conditions and easy after long period of sunny days. The amount of matches shold be finite. Each attempt to light a fire should use up a random amout of matches depending on weather and luck. Gathering Fuel: The survivor should be able to collect branches and sticks inside woods without the hatchet. This would take a longer time to collect and maybe several attempts to succeed. The burning time of branches could also be shorter. The use of hatchet should generate noise. The sound of chopping wood can be heard about 400 meters away. Trees also generate a rushing breaking sound when falling. Fuel from 20 litre jerry cans should be used as an alternative to fuel fireplaces. Car tires could be also used as fuel aso but they generate a lot of black smoke and makes open fire food preparation impossible.
