  1. Beans for the above. The hatchet has a longer range than you would imagine - thing to remember is that it is coded as a ranged weapon (with a short range) therefore you have to make sure the reticle is exactly over the target before you 'fire', or it will count as a miss. This is counter-intuitive to IRL because IRL if you mistime a swing of a melee weapon you will probably still land it somewhere, especially on a target which isn't moving.
  2. OP - if you're impatient... just run. Aggro the zeds (you can lose em in any building with 2 entrances) and check barns and larger buildings with 2 entrances for guns. Even a hatchet will allow you to kill all zeds chasing you as long as you are indoors - you have a longer reach and can move faster.
  3. To develop the point, I think you'd struggle to find any players who would genuinely want the PvP aspect to be entriely removed from DayZ.

    I was running around with a hatchet in the middle of Cherno, near the fire station. Guy was the other side of town (or even outside it). He has no discernable reason to shoot at me, other than it would be fun. Not judging him, the game incentivises you to shoot other players with sniper rifles because it's not worth shooting zombies with it. You get a new toy, you want to use it. He obviously needed the practice because he fired three, maybe four shots and missed with all of them giving me time to get away. Personally I'm a little disappointed every time time I upgrade my weapons. I'd love to be able to engage another player will an Enfield knowing he probably has similar, but chances are an opponent will have something good so I need to match that. I'm tempted to PK every time I get a new weapon just for the rush, but choose not to, but If the game made it harder even to be tempted I think that would be a step in the right direction.

    IMO KoS has more to do with availability of good gear than it does about fear of dying. I was shot at today with hardly any decent gear by a guy maybe half a mile away. I had no way of knowing he was there, he didn't need to atack me. He just had a nice sniper rifle and wanted to use it. You get to a point where you have so much good stuff all you can do for fun is PK. A useful solution would be to make military gear unbelievably rare, like a tiny fraction of what it is now. This would make most encounters for example winchester vs lee enfield. This would make the standoffs and battles longer, tenser, more fun and (as with real life) easier to run away from. Good shots who have mastered their weapons will do even better relatively speaking. It's a former USSR map so the odd AK may not be out of the question, but a sniper or military assault rifle needs to be rare as rocking horse shit. You want to engage an another player? do it in close up: let's see how good you are now,
  6. Paradox. Hackers hack because it makes them feel big and clever. They're preying on this mod since it is a small project in development, and so it's easy to hack. Therefore hacking DayZ is neither big, nor clever. Nor is it even remotely original. To the hacking infants out there, you just may (but probably still wouldn't) get my respect if you manage to successfully hack something WoW and get away with it. Until then, trying to ruin a potentially fantastic indie game in development just because you can? I can't express how lonely and pathetic that is. It's summer for Christ's sake, at least try and get outside for a few minutes a day. There's girls out there and all sorts.

  9. Until this morning I thought I needed to be looking out for things like deer stands, fire stations and crashed heli sites. It turns out I've been striving towards the wrong goals. Thank you for enlightening me as to all of the various locations I can find 'penis' and 'big penis'. Not to mention 'huge penis', which I previously had assumed was simply a mythical, aspirational location (or maybe a hacked item). You know I'm going to be playing this game differently from now on..

    Getting a sniper Rifle.

    CZ 550 is no frills but a perfectly decent rifle. AFAIK you can pick it up in any barn, so it has the added bonus of being collectible in low-traffic areas. Ammo is plentiful too and can be found on zeds. I had a lot of fun with mine until my friend Alice got hungry one afternoon.

    I have found 4 auto injectors in about 8 lives so far, so they're not terribly rare. Not one in a hospital yet thought! Found 2 auto injectors in a deer stand about ten mins after breaking a leg the last time. I think I may have got lucky, but it's still worth checking if you see one.

  16. OP I'm amazed you gave him so many chances. I consider myself one of the in-game 'nice guys', but if that were me in your situation, the second that guy emptied his first barrel he may as well have put the second to his head.

  19. Yeah so I normally play this game solo, and today I was running on my own earlier today with some basic gear like a chemlight and a helicopter. Doing my daily sweep around Electro when I hear the dreaded sound of a makarov. I had heard about them before but never seen one, and all of a sudden I'm face to face with 4 douches. One of them is holding this makarov. I was over the roof of the hospital with nowhere to go, but I noticed one of the douches was hurt, and I thought "Hmm, that's an irrelevant detail - I'll remember that for later". The 4 douches begin circle me for a clear shot with this pistol and I'm thinking my number's up, I mean, I'm looking with dismay at my helicopter counter and I'm down to my last one. I have no choice, I wait for them to get close strafing side to side avoiding the incoming gun fire (deadly, deadly small arms fire as I'm sure you will appreciate). I pointed my helicopter at the makarov man and let it fly into them. nothing happened at first, then I see: Douche 1 has died Douche 2 has died Douche 3 has died Douche 4 has died This is how I took down a makarov with a single helicopter. I was streaming at the time this happened to so an audience of 6.2 saw it happen. Currently in the process of editing the video and putting it up on youtube.. It may take a while as I do not own a PC. And I have been banned from ever using online video sites in 203 countries due to 'the misunderstanding'. Also I have no hands. Still, it'll definitely be worth waiting for. Keep the faith.

  21. Had a search, could not find this topic, at least not recently. Simple really. Permadeath is not really a major deterrent, as there's a good chance you can leg it to your place of death with a new character and collect your loot, no matter where you spawn. Even if the corpse has been looted you've not really lost out on the gamble because you're on a new character anyway. Corpses should last exactly long enough for a killer to be able to loot his victim. Maybe 5-10 mins? The issue only serves to broaden the difficulty gap between playing solo and playing in pairs/teams. As things stand, there is practically no penalty for death if you have a remotely skilled and geared friend or friends, because they can guard your corpse while you sprint from wherever in the map you start off from and just step right back into your old skin, so to speak. Solo players do not have that luxury. If newly respawned team players want to gear up again, they should have to take exisiting loot from the common stock, at the expense of the group's stockpile. This would make the group dynamic a lot more tense and realistic.

  23. That's a great outcome for you, but in a game where you gain nothing for experience or geographic position and all you get is loot - the upshot of this story is you never died the first time. There was no penalty for death at all, and no proper restart. You lost a few clicks on the 'time alive' counter, but that's all.
  24. Good point, though this presupposes the killer (or a random) has already found the body and has already had the opportuniuty to loot it. I'm talking about deaths from long range snipes or accidents/zeds in the middle of nowhere.
