Are the number of hackers increasing?
kander replied to MperorM's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Came across this hack this morning, anyone know if it's new? Logged into a server, and I spawned on a barren plain. Had 5 people standing around me so I couldn't move. The server then told me that I had died. Logged off and onto another server and I was back on the beach with absolutely nothing, but the same amount of health and debug stats.. Strange that the server would be hacked.. There were only a half dozen players on it. -
Has anyone else noticed that finding a hatchet is much, much harder since the arrival of 1.7.2.5? Before, it was so easy, and crowbars seemed really rare. Now it seems to be the other way round. One of my recent lives, the crowbar was the only weapon spawn in the first 5 buildings I went in. Cherno supermarket contained 4 but had no other weapons! The fire station had one and no other weapons.

Why Bandit skins are a terrible idea.
kander replied to RaxUK's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Whilst I agree that the skin system is quite artificial, I think that it is a slightly flawed way to achieve a realistic end result. Trying to model this IRL: people would trust each other more. You wouldn't go wasting your ammo deathmatching and you wouldn't enter into battle with someone who would not otherwise know you were there because even if you get the jump on them every battle just might lead to (permanent and possibly genuinely painful) death. We have a human instinct towards sociability. If you meet another cold and hungry survivor IRL you are more likely to help each other out and share stories. I think this is where the skins come in. The skins to me represent things we would otherwise 'learn' about certain players in a real life situation. I meet you on the road. We chat. I tell you about the kind guy who gave me morphine in the woods North of Balota, you tell me about the bandit at NW airfield who murdered two of your buddies. We give each other physical descriptions of these people: their face, build, backpack, gun etc. Then we meet these people and we know whether they are heroes or bandits not because they have, in some unrealistic sense, 'chosen' to don certain clothes, but because their reputation has preceded them and we know to look out for them. This to me is what the skins mean, in the absence of any real need to socialise and share, they are the next best thing. They are a slightly unrealistic way of making sure that folk end up a little more clued up about the intentions of their fellow survivors. -
This wouldn't help. I can see people turning off routers or unplugging wires to simulate 'connection lost'. I propose this combination to fix most server-hop problems, the first a common suggestion, the second I believe is original: 1.) Combat server hopping to avoid death by keeping the character on the server for say 10 seconds after DC (can be harmed/killed in this time). 2.) Combat server hopping to find fresh loot (at least partly) by lowering the spawn rate percentage of good items on lower population servers. If you want to switch servers to find good stuff your best bet is to go onto a busier server, and this means more danger. Hatchets rarer, crowbars more common?
kander replied to kander's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
hmm maybe so. Can server admins do that? adjusting spawn probabilities I mean -
Sounds reasonable.. Very occasional gun jams should be a feature too. 16 slots though?

How did Rocket want "DayZ" pronounced phonetically?
kander replied to Optimist (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Thinking about it, Rocket's a New Zealander, so the real question is whether it should be: a.) Day Zuy b.) Day Zid Not a dig at our all-black cousins.. Your accent is the coolest. Anyone who is a fan of Flight of the Conchords knows this to be fact. -
LOL I forgave her because it was Rammstein.. I'm not a fan but I find it makes excellent post-apocalyptic survival music

I found a bus hidden in a forest last night. It was my very first vehicle! Drove it from the SW corner where it was stashed to Kamenka, and was happily baiting some zeds, when my GF decided she was going to download a couple of albums on the wifi. Bye-bye connection. I got straight back on the server afterwards but the bus was no more.. First rule of DayZ, Don't get attached to your bus.

So I found an MK-48 Mod...
kander replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Believe it or not it was the first weapon I ever picked up. Someone had ditched it in a barn, clearly because they were running out of ammo.. It was my very first life, so needless to say I didn't get much time to use it : ) -

Day-Zed.. especially as zeds are called zeds -
Had an amazing experience the other day, thought I'd share. I spawned near Balota, and did a quick run of the hangers to get a weapon. Managed to get an AK47, some mags and some basic supplies. I had all the survival equipment and a serviceable weapon so decided to strike out north and see what I could find. Running due North of Balota, over and down a couple of hills I came across a single house at a crossroads. Ahead, in the far distance, there was a strange, tall futuristic tower - it looked like nothing I'd ever seen before and I decided to investigate once I had examined the house. I had plenty of ammo, so had some fun shooting zombies until the area was clear. I then sprinted down to the building to get a closer look. Finding nothing of interest I decided to loot the zed corpses of any beans or ammo, and was just examining the last one when I heard rotor blades and saw little puffs flicking up in the dust right around my feet. I was being shot at from above. I had no idea how the bandits had got the jump on me, but fortunately I was near the house and made a dash for it, hoping to put the structure between me and my would-be murderers. I had escaped unscathed, for now. I had not enjoyed enough time to spot the chopper, but I must have chosen the safest side of the building because after some frantic scanning I could see the rotors of the helicopter as it set down behind a low ride about 300 yards away, on the other side of the building from where I had hidden. Any doubts about the intentions of my new friends were quickly dispelled when, leaning around the corner, I saw a lone gunman appear at a canter from around the ridge which largely obscured his ride. In his arms he was carrying an M249 SAW. I instantly realised that, for the time being at least, I had the advantage. My attacker knew that I was behind the house, but could not be sure which corner, and as he flattened out his run to investigate I was able to open fire into his side with my AK. Heart pounding, my aim was horrible, but his continued to be worse as he sent a burst of fire over my head. Before he had a chance to steady himself and fire again, my stream of bullets had found their mark and he was down, face down on the grass, sprawling in full view of my position, and by now less than 50 yards away. I knew I had very little time. Working on the premise that it is quite hard to fly a helicopter and shoot at the same time (no matter how badly!) I reckoned on his friend(s) being nearby. If they had any sense they would be trying to outflank me. I reloaded my rifle just in case. No time then. My priority was to loot the body and get out. I crouch-ran over and started emptying my pack of the less useful items in anticipation of the loot haul I was about to receive. Pack off my back and down on the ground, I was rifling through it when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. Surely.. Nah I killed him. He's dead. Why else would he.. but no he's crawling, spinning round to my position and he's raising his machine gun. I'm quick, I still manage to shoot first, but why have I gone prone, and why's my gun switched to semi-auto mode? There is no time to change it. I frantically fire off a half dozen rounds. Three of them hit him in the chest and all of a sudden he's yelling in the direct comms. I don't understand a word of it, but I'm well versed in the language of DayZ telling me I'm fucked. The broken limb symbol appears and all of a sudden I have a minus level of blood. I'm exsanguinated. Kander has died. That's the story of the stupidest thing I have yet done on DayZ. Not checking my 'murders' count. It's a stat that would have saved me, but I'm still against the disruption that this counter brings to the immersion of the game. My enemy must have been unconscious and I made the fatal error, in the heat of battle, of not checking I had finished him off. How he survived enough AK rounds to knock him down and out, and then still be able to take another three in the chest and survive I do not know... But it's a mistake I won't be making again.

Yeah, don't try to introduce third person though.. they don't tend to go for that..

Cant seem to get some keys to work what am I doing wrong?
kander replied to mitch_howdie's topic in New Player Discussion
Hmm then I'm not too sure.. try checking the key bindings in 'options' and make sure Arma II hasn't changed it by accident? -

Mate, you bought a computer to play this? That's extreme dedication. TBH I probably would do the same, this game is the nuts..I hope you end up in the camp that love it rather than whine about the bugs ;) Folk in the new player forums are generally pretty helpful if you have any questions.. It's maybe not the friendliest community but you'll find out what you need. Main forum tip - make sure you do a search, even if it's a quick one, before asking questions - duplicate threads are annoying. -

Right, then you need to look down the left hand side and choose the icon that corresponds to 3rd person view. Click it green to make sure that only servers which have 3rd person enabled are listed. Anything you click red will filter OUT so be careful. While you're at it, it's worth setting up the other filters based on your preferences (nameplates, tracers etc) and things like full/empty servers and ping ranges. This should solve your problem. -

Make sure you're playing in a server which allows 3rd person. Which launcher are you using? -
How long before a load screen is deemed infinite?
kander replied to binaryman010011's topic in New Player Discussion
Coast spawning happens to me every time I kill the programme due to long loading screens. I find the best way is to keep all my version up to date and keep a list of favourite (via DayZ Commander) servers which I know don't cause much of a problem. I have also heard that you won't coast spawn if you wait more than 15 mins after Ctrl-Alt-Del (less than 15 mins on a server constituting 'server-hopping') but I haven't verified this. -
Welcome Ecliptic, hope you enjoy. Feel free to ask away in this forum if you need any help.. You almost certainly will before very long!

Debug monitor will be gone in 1.7.3 !
kander replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Well, quite, but it's going to change the way you play - even a little. And that change is a step towards realism. Not knowing in an instant if I'm a corpse or if I'm playing dead will require you, just like IRL, to look down your sights at me for an extended period after shooting me. This could mean that you miss other targets, or fail to notice yourself being outflanked in the process. I'm not having a dig - it's better for me, and I'd bet it'd be more fun for you too. Taking away the digital clicker just makes sniping that little bit more challenging. -

kander replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
# Anything that simulates anything to the slightest degree is, in a sense, realistic. DayZ is realistic. Quake is realistic. Fuck, Pong is realistic. To argue that DayZ is not 'realistic' just because it's not a perfect simulation of a particular environment is missing the point. Realism is aspirational, and DayZ does a good job. Getting philosophical about it: Nothing can ever be a perfect simulation because everyone's experience is different. Two people can experience exactly the same situation and come away feeling differently about it. This has as much to do with your state of mind and predisposition to an event, object or person than it does about the scenario. When you render this into a computer game, yet another layer of variables is introduced. Even if you code something like Sukoku perfectly it's not going to be the same as doing one on paper, even if this is because you can't smell the pencil and paper. -

kander replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, that's another bonus. Want to snipe me? You're going to have to come right over and check I'm dead, or watch me for several minutes afterwards. Just like real life. Fewer stats = fewer stat harvesters => murder is less rewarding and the game becomes more realistic=> more fun -
Why DayZ is both the BEST and the WORST game in recent time.
kander replied to deathdealer's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You have my beans for agreeing with me, Nah, for your sensible reply really ;) I completely agree, and it's tough.. but someone used the analogy yesterday on the boards that DayZ is like a free party and we've paid for the taxi ride. Some jerks have shown up and keep trying to turn off the music and ruin the party, but the party carries on regardless and most people are having fun. Next time though, we'd rather pay an entry fee for a bigger, better party with bouncers on the door. -
Starting with/without a gun
kander replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Spawning with a makarov makes the game harder. Everyone spawing with you will also have one and will happily use it. DayZ - seaside deathmatch between idiots with underpowered pistols? No thanks. -
As an addendum to my post. All posts about hacking should just be edited to "Idea for standalone: try to minimise hacking" Because that's all that can possibly be achieved by this debate. These debates. These endless debates.
