I know that for loot, there about a 5-10 minute cycle that checks to see if a player is between 30-100m away from a building. Sometimes this causes loot to not spawn on the first go, but usually if you step away for a couple minutes, or check another building in town that's close by, it'll spawn. As far as Zeds not spawning, don't know. They should start spawning as soon as you're within 200m of a building. Could just be a server side thing, either your ping is high or the server needs to be reset.

Most veteran servers and up won't show the blue circle on the map regardless of gear. However, with GPS, you can press ctrl + m to pull up a mini-map you can reference while you're moving, and has a similar circle showing your direction and exact location, however, it only shows immediate area. There's really no way of telling if they're have it or not until you try, but a good rule of thumb is veteran servers won't have it.

I've always wanted to go at night and set up a campfire until something crazy happens. I've been there plenty of times fixing up multiple offroads, but nothing happened other than a lot of zombies. Granted, I never actually tried to kill any of them, maybe there's something to this.

Need Medical Assistance in the Mod? Find a medic here!
herrjon replied to Dr Wasteland MD's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hi, I'm around that area, go ahead an join the TS if you haven't already and I'll get you healed up. Edit: Scratch that, my computer that have my Arma stuff decided to explode, I won't be able to play at all for a bit. -
Have a look at this http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/How_to_find_North Beyond that, with your online map, use the general location given when you log in, and use landmarks and known buildings to help figure out where you are and what direction you're facing. Just takes a bit of experience to get it down pat, but you'll get it.

By the sounds of it there was a hacker, just go to a different server, maybe a whitelisted one.

Need Medical Assistance in the Mod? Find a medic here!
herrjon replied to Dr Wasteland MD's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I got whitelisted for it, just spawned in fine so I should be able to help you. The problem is I'll be out of town from tomorrow morning until Sunday night, so you may have to wait a little. If any other medics would like to take this instead feel free, but I'll be available to help Sunday night on. Also just a note, the website is awkack.org. And as for your location, do you mean 047 127? 147 puts you in the water, 127 puts you in the ATC tower. -
Hi there, give this map a look over http://dayzdb.com/map For maps, food and drink, your best bet is the high value residential (blue) and the supermarkets (the shopping carts). For a hunting knife, they're pretty easy to find in most industrial areas (yellow) but can spawn in residential as well. As for your other issues, why don't you PM and we'll get in touch? My clan has a mentoring program that I think can really help you out.

So if I understand this correctly, you feel the compulsion to betray them because you think they're going to betray you? Sure it's hard to trust other people in DayZ, but you don't have to go about it that way. I usually don't "team up" with randoms, but I do help them out and give them stuff when I run into people. There are certain signs to watch out for and certain security practices you can follow to avoid being betrayed. Usually people after your gear will follow you around VERY closely, and tend to have their gun raised and look down their sights a lot, even in "safe" areas. You can sense a tone in their voice to tell if they really are friendly and/or new and just want the extra help, or they're just after your gear in the end. As far as practices, when you meet people try to be the one to see them rather than the other way around. Politely ask them to lower their weapon (ctrl x2) before revealing yourself, and even after that, don't stand directly in their line of fire. Always keep an eye on the movements and behaviors, alt + look is your friend. If you feel like a situation is getting a bit suspicious, don't immediately kill them unless you really want what they have and you're ok with killing (I personally am not, but it's your choice.) Try to slip away as best you can, even going as far as logging out in some cases. You can be friendly, you just have to be smart about it.

See where it says "ARMA 2: NOT FOUND (out of date)"? Just press install there next to "99515 (Latest)"

Install the latest Arma II beta patch (the one at the top of the list) and you should be good to go.

How do character saves work on the hives?
herrjon replied to Deglorath's topic in New Player Discussion
Hi there Deg, It basically works like this. Every server is to a "hive" meaning the area where character data is stored. When you connect to a particular server, it uses the character save from the particular hive it's connected to, while other saves on other hives remain untouched. A large number of servers are connected to the "public" or "official" hive, and you can move from those servers with the same character without too many problems. The rest are on a "private" hive. Usually these private hives are only connected to one server, but there are some that are connected to a few servers. You can hop around these few servers with your same gear so long as they are on the save private hive. Usually these hives have a website that tells you which servers they host and how to connect to them if they have whitelisting and such. It's certainly fine to not want to play on the public hive, so if you wish to maintain your gear simply keep track of which private hives you play on. DayZ Commander for instance has a favoriting system that lets you favorite servers so you can find them again, and even lets you put in notes to keep track of what's going on with that particular character. Hope that helps -
If you're using Six Launcher, it should just auto update or at least prompt you to do so on startup. If you're using DayZ commander, select the install/update and look for DayZ and select the most current version and hit install. If you're running it straight through Arma II, you'll have to redownload the torrent and update your files manually just as you did the first time.

It really depends what you are looking for. If you want to just scavenge and horde loot and/or kill some zeds with your friends, than yeah, low pop is the way to go. If you want intense PvP and get an adrenaline rush just passing by a city then you want high pop. It's just if you want to get amazing gear and keep it, it's nearly impossible to do on high pop. But then the dilemma occurs of, if you're only playing on low pop, what's the point of all this amazing gear? Just gotta find a happy medium that works for you.

I never said you had to be part of a group to survive, I merely said there are plenty of "zombie avoidance" guides and such that exist, and that my clan, and I use that term very loosely, has a mentoring program that helps teach new players how to survive on their own. For a long while I played entirely alone and learned the game on my own when it was still in a state similar to this (no starting gun etc.) and sure it was a bit rough, but I rose to the challenge and thrived on my own. Even now that I'm a part of TMW I still find myself being self sufficient; getting my own supplies and finding and maintaining my own vehicles, not relying on having an overwatch before entering a hotspot. It is definately doable and you'll figure it out if you go into it with the right mindset. If the no starter gun really bothers you, trust me, you're better off unarmed than holding a Makarov. Once you get a feel for the loot spots you can find a hatchet within the first 5 minutes, and that's being generous. From there, just look for barns and deerstand and you'll have a nice starter rifle to defend yourself with. I still wouldn't kill zeds with them though, shooting them just gets you killed in the end. If you really want to survive with no help at all, then be my guest. It is extremely possible and most of us have done it to some degree. After a week or two of playtime you'll laugh at how easy zombies are to deal with and how easy it is to find any gun at all.

If you just calm down a bit and simply ask for help we're more than willing to do so. There are plenty of guides and tips not only on this forum, but an youtube and such. There as also a number of other players that will help you get on your feet. For instance, my clan has a mentoring program to teach new players about the game, but you'll have to lose that attitude first. Best of luck whatever you do.

If I have a vehicle, great, if not, just run it. Set a waypoint if you can or just get a heading and off you go, should only take half an hour to an hour to get there from popular spawn points of the map. If you hit Starry or the supermarket strip on the way, then yeah, it'll take you longer, but you're still doing something worthwhile. I've made plenty longer runs than Cherno to NWA, once ran from Zelenogorsk to Berezino to save someone, good 14km if memory serves. Starry is also a good place to look for some PvP if you've grown tired of hunting coastal snipers. And if no one is there, loot away.

Unofficial servers have a separate hive with a separate character, not effected by your main hive one. The hourglass just means you're passed out, an epi-pen will wake you right up. Go ahead and add me on Steam (Herr Jon) and we'll get in touch.
-
Did you actually die, death message and everything? If not you're probably just knocked out, I can come wake you up if you like.

If I remember right, it should put in combat, but I haven't been shot recently, so I'm not sure. I know it can be a bit glitchy anyways. Hard to say if it was a hacker or not too. Usually if they're not planning on teleporting you or them and messing with you, they'll jut insta kill you. You can be hit with snipers without hearing them. For instance, the DMR can be fired from 800 m away, but only has an audible range of 180 m. On the other hand, all official sniper rifles deal upwards of 8000 blood, meaning you wouldn't be taking 2 shots from one and surviving. It's possible they had a M16A4 ACOG, that has a range of 600m with audible of 80m, and deals 3555 blood. Silenced weapons are also a possibility. On another note, did you need medical help? I'm a medic and I can go heal you if you need it.

tbh as a new player all you need from industrial spawns is an axe, maybe a hunting knife, but mainly the axe. Strange that the firestation had axes in it, since they don't natural spawn there. As for the light, check that it is infact binded to 'L'. try putting it back on your toolbelt and requipping it, or switching weapons. It's pretty fickle about it sometimes.

This sort of thing just comes with the territory when playing a mod/game in alpha state. There will be glitches and bugs that will force you to restart, and they're not limited to public servers. Playing on private only is perfectly fine, but if you'd like to play on public, the best thing you can do is find a few good servers that work well for you and you get good ping/fps and stick to those. Beyond that, to save your gear you do have the options of tents and vehicles to store gear in. If change servers and you get a glitch death or something, you merely have to get back to your tent and your gear is still there. Best of luck
-
I'd recommend doing a little troubleshooting to see what works. Spawn in, find some form of loot, can even be an empty can, then relog and/or change servers and see if it is still there. This is probably no way to regain what you lost from the first server, but you can test other ones to rule out this issue on your side. All else fails, just reinstall, your private hive gear should be fine. As for that lack of a character model, I actually experienced that on one of my servers I played on. At least for me, in first person I looked a bit like soldier clothing, and since that skin isn't supported by dayz, there is no model for it. You are basically invisible. I tried everything I could think of to get rid of it, but nothing worked, I ended up having to abandon that server, one of which I had 3 vehicles and 2 tents on. But life goes on. Thankfully that's a server side issue.
-
Have you tried other public servers beyond the one where you lost your gear? Different servers can have strange glitches that come with them, public or private, and there's really no what of telling until you play on them. Just try other servers and see what happens. If it's just on that server, it's server side so just don't play there, otherwise it's client side and the best general fix is reinstall. As far as a reinstall goes, I can't say for sure everything will go completely smoothly, as there is always issues with changing dayz versions and arma patches, but I do know people have completely reinstalled Arma as well as DayZ and maintained their gear and location just fine on the public hive. Oh, and the 3rd person "not working" just has to do with the settings of the server. The admins can enable/disable a lot of mechanics including 3rd person, crosshairs, waypoints, nametags, death messages, etc. Most servers list what features they support in the name that you see in the browser, and dayz commander has them shown separately in the details, and can even be filtered through.
