Best place to start a hideout?
herrjon replied to Phil The Survivor's topic in New Player Discussion
Well I don't think there's any gas tanks that don't have zombie spawns around it, but anywhere near a water source would probably suit your other needs, provided to have the tools to hunt and a canteen. Might be worth your while to set up nearish to Berezino for medical supplies, but if not, at least make a trip there and load up blood and morphine. If you want a low key gas tank to use, there's one in the NW area, near Skalka, about 013 019. It's unmarked on the dayz.db map. The is no such thing is DayZ. Nowhere is safe, and you can and will lose everything in an instant. -
I don't KoS regardless, but I will avoid gillie players if I see them and I'll keep an eye on them. I am normally social with others, but if a person is wearing a gillie suit, they clearly aren't looking to chat.
-
There's typically a box that spawns in the back right by the ladder as well. I tend to avoid going on the roof whenever possible because you can be easily shot at from most common sniping spots in cherno/elektro with little cover and no escape.

Good guide, it is worth noting on the OP that hatchets are a very effective starter weapon that can allow you to be more mobile in cities, due to the silent killing of zombies. Also morphine does spawn everywhere, it's just hospitals are sure things. I would take out the bit about factories being a good place for weapons, they are on the spawn list, but i have never actually seen one spawn there in all my time playing, scavenging for car parts. As far as zombie mechanics, I've been agroed even while prone now, they seem to have super hearing. I usually don't bother trying to be too stealthy when going into a city because I know all the ways to lose them easily. It's better to stay mobile and hidden than crawling around on the street, being a sitting duck for bandits.

Good tutorial. Very informative. I haven't had to use my DMR much, but when I have it's been in more of clutch situations where I don't have time to calculate all that out unfortunately. However, thanks to it's semi-auto nature, you can fish out a range with your shots if you've already been exposed. I'm thinking of doing the math to transfer directly from mil-dot height to bullet drop offset, without having to figure out the actual range in the middle. And no, don't use the DMR on zombies. A friend of mine did one time, and I had to go in and save him, got about 40 zombie kills after it was all said and done.

Depending on your target's humanity, you could be pretty low. When you kill someone their humanity is subtracted from yours, in addition to the negative humanity from shooting them in the first place. You'll just have to wait it out. It'll increase 30 per minute up until 2500, and you need to get at least 2000 to lose the bandit skin. If you're planning on attempting to heal others to get it back up, I'd suggest finding camo clothing, since most people shoot bandits on sight.

Are you talking about the Offroad found at Green Mountain? I've been able to get 90 items in there on different servers, I've found the wiki and the db to be inaccurate so far with storage.

I need Survival buddies!!
herrjon replied to TheFinestofChins's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't think you can join Taviana servers with Six, since they're not official servers and not the official map. I'd get DayZ commander, that way you can download the map and find it in the browser. -
The can be found randomly throughout the forest or fields, even seen a cow wandering Cherno. The field ones typically have more meat on them though, and are easier to see at night. One way you can hunt is using the peripheral dots on the side of your screen, they typically mean there's an animal there if you're not near any zombie spawns. If you are in dire need of blood, the trusted medics can help. Just post a request here or go to the teamspeak channel ts.dayzmedics.com

It varies from admin to admin, some will ban you for simply having hacked in gear even if it's in the official loot table (such as the DMR), others will ban only if it's not official gear (such as your M16 SD) and some just won't care. I think though your best bet is to just get rid of it all and not have to worry about it. I'd recommend killing a zombie (not with with M16 SD but something else, or find one) open up the gear on him, and load the hacked in gear onto him. Then just chose the "hide body" option. The gear will be removed from the game.

You must be a new online gamer, because Australians have the hardest time connecting to anything outside their country, that's not just DayZ. I'd say find the servers that work and stick to them. As far as private hives, I'd still give them a try. I know Balota Buddies has a few Australian hosted servers and lots of different players, there's no one clan just hording and controlling the server, and hacker free. As far as zombies and nighttime goes and just general gameplay tips, there's plenty of tutorials and what not here http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/10051-index-of-helpful-threads/

I don't know all the details, but as far as I can tell they're just leftover repair options from Arma and don't do anything. I've driven my offroad around for a good month (before it got hacked away) without those and it drove fine. I also repaired them for the hell of it because I had like 20 spare wheels, nothing changed. The don't exist.

The sidearm itself will take up 5 backpack slots, which is the majority of the starter patrol pack. If you don't have 5 open spaces the sidearm will simply be deleted, no popup saying it doesn't fit or dumping things out of your backpack, it's just gone. Unfortunately one of the glitchy mechanics of the inventory, but you learn to deal with it. It also attempts to move all magazines of the sidearm into your pack, and if you don't have enough spaces for those, it will delete any that don't fit. This means with an empty starter pack all you'd be able to carry around 3 mags at a time if you plan on using the flashlight. Alternatively, if you don't have space or don't have time to fuss with it, you can simply drop your weapon on the ground or in a zombie or other storage space. I wouldn't drop it while on a slope though, they have a tendency of ending up underground. Best to fish out an existing loot pile. Also really the only way of pulling out a hatchet when you end up with 2 rifles. If that sounds like too much work, try to play on daytime servers, learn to play at night without unnatural light, or find a G17, M4A3 CCO, or a Remington 870.

So yeah, I got pissed (first day of playing)
herrjon replied to pastelpunk86's topic in New Player Discussion
That sucks that you died in such a way, but that's day z for you. You had a lot better and longer first life than the first dozen lives of other new players. It's good that you're pushing through and will start again, because if there's anything you should learn about DayZ, it's that you will die. You can avoid it and be as careful at you like, but at some point you're going to croak. And also Flashlights aren't a good idea, they give away your position from at least 1km away. I wouldn't recommend playing during the night unless you have NVG's or you can handle moving around without light, but I understand this case because it was a private hive. You can turn gamma/brightness up, but that's really up to opinion. Best of luck! -
I think 3 and 4 should be under the assumption that you are near or behind cover, and also depends on how close the shots are to you. If someone starts firing at you while you're crossing a field or other open area, if you lie down on the ground you're just serving yourself up to them. Maybe just add or note, when moving from cover to cover or across open areas, never stop. Serpentine around eratically until you are behind cover again. Edit: As far as pair or group tactics, I find danger crossing and supressive advance to be effective skills to use and aren't very complicated for new Arma players.

Isn't killing the only way to survive longer?
herrjon replied to _Anubis_ (DayZ)'s topic in New Player Discussion
Is it easier to survive if you KOS, in most cases, yes. Is it impossible to not kill and interact with people? Of course not. I've been playing for awhile now and have only ever had 1 non-bandit kill, and my victim had fired on me first. I still actively seek out player interaction, not just avoid it. This doesn't mean I look to team up with randoms, as I prefer the lone wolf playstyle actually, but I'll usually heal them up, give them something to eat and drink, maybe exchange a story and escort them somewhere. It has happened before and it will happen again. You just have to be smart about it. -
It'll go back up on its own, but you can help the process with bloodbags and whatnot. In the meantime I'd suggest finding some camo clothing.

Newcomer starter tut to get equipment easily
herrjon replied to z13l5ch31b3's topic in New Player Discussion
Why die at Komarovo? That's ideal for a starting spawn. Go to factory for hatchet, knife, and drink, then Balota Airstrip for a gun, and then you have a good entry point into Cherno. You got lucky spawning in Vysota next, but with all the respawns you did it probably would've been quicker to just run to Cherno from Kamenka. Or if you don't go that route, head North the Zelenogorsk and hit deerstands and barns for guns. -
My Day Z experience, I'm completely done with this game now
herrjon replied to F0l2saken's topic in New Player Discussion
Most people have covered the important parts, but I'll put in my two cents. The hacking issue is just due to how open Arma II is to scripts. We obviously can't confirm it right now, but the word is for Standalone it will be much more locked down. According to Rocket, it's going to be a new engine with parts from different BI products, securely working together. There will obviously always be hackers, but it will be much more difficult than downloading a script menu and having complete control of the server. The devs know that hacking is there and it is their number one focus in Standalone, but not much can be done for the mod. When DayZ started, rocket didn't imagine it would be as popular as it did, from what I hear it was him just having an idea and testing it out with a few friends, and the openness of Arma II made that a possibility. As far as private servers and abusive admins go, it's just a little trial and error. Unfortunately because they're private hives, you aren't able to report for abusive admin, since that's only on officially supported servers. However, you go to official servers and have higher chance of hackers, so it's best to go with the lesser of two evils. Your case was clearly admin abuse, however don't freak out the moment you're kicked or banned. There was a case when I was playing on a private hive to save someone, and I notice in the chat feed a number of people got banned at the same time. There was some talking, some raging, but in the end most came back in. Some private admins like to remove all possible suspects from the server and then figure things out before a scripter can do any more damage. It's not common place by any means, but it does happen. You already have plenty of recommendations to go off of so that should help. I'd provide my own, but I play almost exclusively public hive because of how I chose to play (general medic) using a lock private hive purely for training purposes. Just get out there and stay positive, once you find the right server you'll have a great time. -
Yeah, gun thing, press F to attempt to get it up on the to right of your screen, or move it into your backpack, drop it, or swap it with something else (dunno which gun it is so do what you can) and then re-equip it. Maybe they don't give you any bullets though. To check that, just see what's in your gear by pressing 'g'. And if you manage to get the gun to appear in the top right with 'f', it'll be green if you have ammo, red if you don't.

Should I wait to break my DayZ virginity
herrjon replied to gingermonkey's topic in New Player Discussion
Arma II and OA are great games on their own with other free mods that are fun as well, so just that is worth buying it. Another thing to note too is that when SA does come out, the Dayz mod, or just DayZ at the moment, will still be active and supported, so if SA is a rough release you'd still have DayZ mod to fall back on until it gets sorted out. That plus the fact that SA won't have any of the other maps, so if you ever wanted to play on those, DayZ mod is your only option for to play on those, at least in the short to midterm. -
That's exactly right. When your coords are 2x2, each square is 1km x 1km, and when your coords are 3x3, each square is 100m x 100m

If you double tap 'w' to sprint, you will go faster momentarially but the you will get "fatigued" and move slower in general. I've had plenty of experience with this with my cross country runs with friends, the hero skin who was spriting for a bit was moving slower than the gillie. Desync can play a part in it as well, but the most common issue I see is the sprinting vs. running thing.

Got off my old bike, fell to its side, now I can't get it back?
herrjon replied to sarym's topic in New Player Discussion
The only way I know of is to get back on it, so you may have to play around with it a bit. Bikes are super fragile anyways, I never seem to be able to keep one for more than 1/2 an hour.
