Need Medical Assistance in the Mod? Find a medic here!
herrjon replied to Dr Wasteland MD's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It's ts.dayzmedics.com -
If you're looking for a "tutorial" of sorts, my clan TMW provides a training course called "Chenarus 101" for new-novice players, and there's no need to official join us. Just PM if you're interested.

In dayz, which side of the road do you drive on?
herrjon replied to daogn's topic in New Player Discussion
I stick to the right, since that's where the signs are and the arrows in Taviana tell me to go. Especially so when I take the Bus out, you're supposed to pass from the inside :P -
My new topic and thoughts : Ways to survive DayZ [Tips and tricks]
herrjon replied to tandwan's topic in New Player Discussion
You can go around with a hachet and take little to no damage from zeds, it just takes practice and understanding of mechanics. Most people will backup and swing right before the zombie does the attack animation, and while this does work most of the time with propper timing, on average 1 of every 5 zeds will get a swipe on you, the trick is to sidestep. Let them run or walk in, and as soon as they start the attack animation/lunge step to either side and swing your axe. You will get hit at some point due to some quirks in the game, but not any more that 1 out of 20 if you know what you're doing. As for the crossbow, it is a lovely weapon to have to kills zeds at a range provided you know how to not aggro zeds and pick them off while they're docile. However, if you do aggro, the fire-rate is far too low to handle even a small crowd, on hand ammo is limited even if you do take all 12 slots, and hip fire aiming with it is difficult, especially for novice players. Your only option really is lead them into a building so they'll walk single file for you and hope you have enough bolts, or as you said, drop it and take out the hatchet. My main gripe with the crossbow is the ammo per inventory slot (1:1 compared to typical 20:1 or 30:1), however this will be fixed in the next patch with quivers(5:1 I believe, which is acceptable considering the damage). All other issues people have really just comes down to unfamiliarity with the weapon and it's mechanics and tactics. I don't think I'd personally recommend it as a first pickup for a new player, but definitely something to look into for any player. -
Just look in less traveled areas. The only vehicle you may find in Cherno/Elektro is the bus. If you really want to mess with vehicles, go on Taviana.
-
As people have said, you need a tent or a vehicle to store stuff over restart. Both have their pros and cons, but for long-term storage, I prefer the tent. It's small, green, and can't be driven away. Don't get me wrong, vehicles are very useful for many reasons, but for storage, they can be found and taken or simply hacked away, and can blow up randomly during your goings about. Ideally you'd have both, with the vehicle just carrying extra food/drink and ammo, saving space for loot you find, with a tent(s) hidden carefully to hold the more important stuff and extra caches of supplies. but you take what you can get. As for where to find these, tents can be found typically in supermarkets, but do spawn in any residential building. As for vehicles, refer to http://dayzdb.com/map to find general spawn points. Be sure to look in the area around those locations, as it's not quite exact. However, don't expect them to be there, as players usually nab the more sought after ones quickly, and each point is only a chance of spawning a vehicle. Also note that boats and bicycles don't have storage space and motorcycles only hold 5 items, no backpacks or weapon/tools.

I played lone wolf when I started. After I had a handle on things, I surivive for a good 3-4 months. I join a group of people, I die 5 times in one day. Do I regret it? Of course not, it was of the most enjoyable DayZ experiences yet.

My 1st day in DayZ! And a weird glitch... Or something...?
herrjon replied to Mini Maracas's topic in New Player Discussion
Dunno what happened when you died, but if you get debugged just relog and you'll be on the coast again. -
The towel around their head means they're a bandit and have killed multiple times. Camo suit and Gillie suit are items that can be found and worn. Hero skin is a white and blue plaid shirt and bullet proof vest which you get by healing people until you have 5k humanity or more.
-
They just changed the numbers, you need a lot more cow to get healed back up. Rabbits however, rabbits are wonderful to eat.
-
Yep, 64-bit can use 32-bit, just not the other way around.
-
You probably have to manually update it then. http://www.battleye.com/download.html
-
When you join a server, you'll see some red text in the chat area with something along the lines of "Batteye checking update.." etc. and your GUID. If it says update failed, you'll have to update it manually. What's the kick message? Battleye out of date? Script Restriction #x? Wrong CD Key?
-
I'm not sure what you've done to test this, just make sure you're within range for direct chat. It's about 50m for direct text and 80m for direct speech. It seems to with the speech the further away they are from you, the quieter they are, as if in real life. VOIP is not only an immersion breaker but just downright annoying, especially if you have to hear for stuff around or tactics with your allies. It's especially troublesome on the servers that don't have the name pop up for who's talking in side chat, so you can't just mute that one player. The only option is turn of VON entirely, which eliminates the option of using direct to talk to people.
-
That was removed the from public hive servers awhile ago. There are some private hives that run a debug monitor, but not all of them. If you press scroll lock and box will pop up saying your humanity, zombie kills, and murders I believe, but nothing as detailed as the old debug.

I second this. I can appreciate a good bandit who knows their stuff and doesn't resort to just scripting to get the job done. I recall a time on Taviana where I was looting the ATC tower of the East Airfield, found a DMR on the top floor, and just as I pick it up, I see a flash down at the other end. I hit the deck and hear the bullet wiz by my head. He takes a few shot at me, but could do anything as I was laying down. Get down on the ground, fall back to the forest and attempt to find him. I did spot him briefly, but he was changing positions and moving quickly, and I had no idea on the range, so I was only able to hit around him. At this point zeds were getting a bit crazy (I already kinda had a horde riled up before going into the ATC tower), so I had to leave the area. After I got somewhere safe, I exchanged pleasantries with him over side chat, asked him what gun he was using (M24) and how far away he was (~600). He even told me he saw me before I went into the building with my Lee Enfield, but didn't shoot until he saw me pick up the DMR (dunno if he planted it or what, but w/e). I congratulated him on his fine shooting and left the server. He asked me to come back and "play" but I had to go anyways. Basically, not all bandits are dicks. They just want to play the game as Arma with zombies around, which is fine, it's a sandbox after all. I chose to play as the idiot who runs into danger to save a stranger, but that's just me, I don't expect that of anyone. You just have to figure out what you want to do with the game and find those with a similar mindset, and watch out for those who don't. The only unacceptable way to play is scripting, which should be handled in SA.

First day of survival: This game doesn't make any sense to me
herrjon replied to Sliv's topic in New Player Discussion
Hello, By the looks of it most of your questions got answered, I'll just add on. I highly recommend resetting your bindings for Q and E. They allow you to lean and roll (while prone ofc) which becomes very useful when going through high pop areas and need to safely look around corners and return fire without exposing yourself too much. For picking up the the hatchet, it doesn't have a radius you can pick it up, it's based off the model of the axe. Do your best to get your cross hairs right over and scroll, there should be a take hatchet option. If not, try holding right mouse button to zoom in, usually helps. Remember though, when you do find that hatchet, if you don't have a rifle already, do the remove from toolbelt option in the gear, and don't forget to reload it :D I tend to avoid ladders when I can, usually ends up badly, but there's some quirks with them I'm familiar with. I seem to have the best luck getting the option not when I'm looking directly at it, but if I stand near it and look 90 degrees either left or right of it. Start there and just move around your crosshair until you see the option. Sounds silly, but that's just how it is. Some ladders on other maps are just straight up bugged, but last I remember all the Chenarus ones work. -
The issue is, most of us experienced players have a group we play with or can hold our own and can't be bothered to look after a bambie. The newer players are anxious and traumatized from being killed on sight and so desperate to not die from hunger, they will shoot anything that moves. There still are people out there who are friendly and will help you out, but you can just go running at them screaming "FRIENDLY". You just have to go about it the right way. Temp ban for killing a bit is completely against the purpose of the game. Players are supposed to be free to do what they want with what they have. If someone wants to go on a killing spree and have the skills and supplies to do it, then they can very well go ahead. I feel the bandit skin is plenty for "karma" of killing, maybe just having a simple way of identifying a bandit in gillie or camo. Rocket had said for the standalone he doesn't want to punish people for PvP, but make the world more harsh on people so those KoS people will have a rough time surviving unless they have a full squad helping them out. I know people have posted here and there they want PvE servers on the main hive and standalone, but I don't think they realize how that would be. I played on a Nalask server that banned anyone who even shot another player, and honestly, it was the move boring DayZ experience of my life. I would just nonchalantly clear out a town of zeds with my M1014 without a care, no worry, no adrenaline, just some a mindless shooter where I'd have to find some food and ammo every now and then. If I had teamed up with someone, it would've been even worse. It the rush of meeting someone and trying talk to them and help them not knowing if they're going to shoot my face off the next chance they get, or they have a sniper buddy, that what I enjoy about the game.

Where can I find 100 Rnd. M240 for my MK 48 Mod?
herrjon replied to kingkrabbe.#bof's topic in New Player Discussion
Any military spawn or a lower chance in Industrial spawns. Shouldn't take you too long. -
-
It has a lot of use once you know how to use it, can really lose the zeds if you can find some fences, also do some silly parkor stuff, but w/e
-
The little bird typically spawns at NE Airstrip, but that whole area (NEAS, Krasnostav, Berezino) is usually pretty quiet and spawns some good residential and industrial stuff for low risk, with scattered military.
-
I find it's fairly easy to just pop into the south barracks area without too much trouble, just hide in a tree nearby it, see if you're spawning zeds or not and look in the windows, in and out. North barracks are a bit more tricky, but come in from the north through the forest and tree hop until you get a good view of the barracks and scope out as usual. If you insist on doing the firehouse after that, go back into the forest and repeat the same tactic. The point is, never go out on the runway. Stay in the forest as much as possible and keep your eyes open. I don't recommend even looking in the ATC tower or the hangers unless you're absolutely sure you're alone. When you loot them, you're far too exposed and in danger of both players and zeds. As far as day/night, if you have NVG's, night is ideal, if not, better off when the sun is up and you can see if players are lurking around. Just try to do it when the pop is as low as possible if you aren't looking for a fight or a bullet in your head.

I'm not sure about the Arma community since I just stick to my TMW clan, but there are plenty of dayz groups that are welcoming to newbies who mess around with other Arma mods as well, usually wasteland, so you could start there I suppose if you're looking for a group. http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/forum/69-clan-group-recruitment/

DayZ Mod in my opinion is definitely worth the price by itself, but by the sounds of it you're an Arma fan so I'd say go for it. I'm sure there won't be any good mods for Arma 3 right off the bat, whereas Amra II you have DayZ, Wasteland, Ace, among many, many other good mods. If you're worried about the hackers in DayZ, just find a nice whitelisted server like Balota Buddies and you'll be fine.
