    New Player!

Basically it allows the server to only allow people they trust on the server without having to lock it and maintain a password. It's done specifically in this case in order to not allow any hackers on the server. The Balota Buddies whitelsting process is quite extensive, but it's worth it. Only drawback is because it's a private server you'll only be able to play on that server and keep whatever gear you happen to find. When you join a different server, it will be a completely different character. Welcome btw. I hope you enjoy the game, and don't be afraid to learn things the hard way. If you would like to play with some friendly people, or need any medical assistance, check out the Trusted Medics of the Wasteland (TMW). website is http://tmwdayz.com/ and teamspeak is ts.dayzmedics.com. Best of luck!

    Multi-Clan Survivor/Hero Union?

There was a thing called the Coalition awhile back that was similar to what you're proposing. http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/73671-the-coalition-changing-the-culture-of-dayz/ pretty much died out now. It's a good idea, but takes lots of organization and cooperation. I don't think TMW will join any official union or anything like that again, but I'm not Marijke, so I can't speak for the group as a while. Best of luck though.

    I'm New

There are friendly people out there though. It's just, the question you should ask is not "are you friendly?" but "do you need any help?" All saying friendly means is that you don't want to be shot, which is the case for anyone, so asking that is silly. If you ask if they need help you are showing you will be some use to them in their survival, and shouldn't kill you, at least right away. Still be cautious of course, but that's a better way to get a coversation going.

    Server Restart

If you're using Dayz commander, the server will be in you recent history tab, so you can quickly get back to it once it's done restarting. You can also favorite it if it's a server you stash stuff on or a private server you have a running character on. I believe Six has a favorite system as well, but in general, just use Dayz Commander. And just make sure you're not driving or flying when the server restarts and you should be fine. I'd try and get out of a town or something as well, but it's not as important as parking a vehicle. If the server restarts while you're in a vehicle, you're gonna have a bad time.

just wondering if my laptop can run dayz

Gaming on a laptop in general is iffy at best, but with those specs there's no way you'll be able to run Arma on any playable level.

how to play on ''public hive'' ?

I assume you mean 24/7? Well, yes and no. I've had random server downtime on private servers before, much more so than public, but also most private severs aren't active 24/7, and my play time is sparatic. Plus the fact that servers both public and private will randomly shut down for good or change maps. On public, all I've lost is whatever tents and vehicles I left there, private, I lost everything. On the vanilla servers, yes private vanilla do exist, but they're becoming more of a rarity as time goes on. Few servers can resist the temptation to not kick up the number of vehicles or add a barracks in Balota or something, and even if the server description seems like it doesn't have anything weird, you get in and spawn in with some of the weirdest loadouts. Just not worth the hassle imo. I'm not saying private servers are bad, they do allow admins to be more creative with how the game is played, and it fill a niche for some players, I just personally prefer public hive, and the features of private hives cannot replace what features I like about public hive, at least with the way things are set up now.

how to play on ''public hive'' ?

Just do what Elements said and you can find them. I prefer public because I prefer the vanilla dayz experience. No spawn with tools and sniper rifles, no 4,000+ vehicles, no added buildings everywhere, no donor perks, just plain old dayz. And if the server is down, not active, or a time of day I don't like, I can just hop to one that suits my needs without losing progress. Just makes me sad that there isn't a "public hive" for the other maps, since I'm sick of Chenarus at this point.

    Returning to Dayz

tajjuk, I know at least one of those examples wasn't a hacker, and a couple others could not have been too. The large number of heli crashes is due to the server taking a long time to restart. They spawn over the lifetime of the server now and not just all at once at the start, so if it doesn't restart daily, you end up getting all those crash sites. Was the next one on a private hive? A lot of the private hives like to kick up the number of vehicle spawns to ridiculous amounts, seen one with 7,000, no joke. So you'll sometimes see large groups of vehicles in weird places, or people will horde them, like that kid probably was. If not could've been admin abuses.

Best and Worst Spots to Abort/Log-Out

Had the same thing. Me and some mates were going on basically a suicide mission on Salvation City. After a lot of screwing around, we finally took off in our heli, armed with Winchesters and AK's. By the time we got there though, some of us had to go and decided to just log out and go for it tomorrow. I pop back in later just to look around the the island, back on mainland. It sucked.
  10. That's why you shouldn't carry grenades, or at least practice with chemlights an flares until you're good at the trowing mechanic. Grenades can be a devistating weapon when used right, one of the reasons I still see unarmed people as a threat.

    New strategy

What exactly do you do when you try to make contact with another player? Run around in front of them yelling "friendly" with no cover? It's very possible to be friendly with people, but you can't let yourself be such an easy kill, or act threatening in any way. A lot of average players do want to make that contact, but as you are thinking right now, are too afraid of getting KoS'd, so if they get a chance to kill you and survive, they will probably take it instead of the risk of dying. Just create a situation where you can make contact and start talking with them, if they don't, then you can do what you will.

    DayZ Basics

No need for the hostilities fellas. Outlaw, I'd recommend coming out with some new content before you bump. No need to ask the community what they ask in this thread, just go around the forums and see what people are having trouble with, or cover a topic you know well.

    Returning to Dayz

Yeah, I'd stick with an established community server. Even on public hive, servers come and go everyday, desperately trying to get player traffic. They either shut down, change maps, or add ridiculous mods to it to attract attention.

    Skype

I don't have a problem with 3rd party chat, partly due to the fact that the in-game chat doesn't really work in the first place. Disregarding the inability for snipers/overwatch to call things out to their mates 300m away, direct chat has a short range to begin with, drops off too quickly meaning you have to yell in the mic to be heard by someone who isn't right next to you, and on some servers it just straight up doesn't work. It can "break my immersion" sometimes when I'm coordinating with people on the other side of the map, or on a different server, but it's not really a problem when we're in the same active group. And when I want to do the immersive experience, I don't play in a group in the first place, much less use TS or skype or anything. I'm also not sure what major unfair advantage you claim it has over the current in-game chat, or the promise of radios. If there was a group going around talking, coordinating things, calling things out with direct, you wouldn't hear them unless you could spit on them anyways. The only thing I can think of would be overwatch or just overall spread out groups, but this would be the case with a private in-game radio channel also. I'd also doubt radios would be super rare with the way Rocket has been talking about SA, so by the time a squad would be PvP ready, they would probably all have radios by then. If they can get radios to work well in standalone my opinion might change, but for now that's the way I see it. But even that won't matter as a game disallowing the use of 3rd party programs in a public game is a form of spyware, which is wrong.

    Placed items not spawning

Fireplaces are supposed to disappear when you leave. With the tents, is this on just one server or multiple servers? And has the server restarted from when you logged out to when you logged in? Sometimes there can be lag where you place the tent or do something and you can see it, but the server doesn't pick up on it. Usually a sign of a bad server for you. Also when the server restarts, if someone tries to login while it's loading (timeout counter in top right of lobby) the server stops loading tents and vehicles and just start up, leading to some people not being able to see and access they're tents that cycle. It's still saved to the server with you're gear, it just didn't load. Hope that helps.

    New player questions

    1. Yeah, if you log out alive, you will log back in at the same spot with the same gear. If you die, well you've witnessed what happens. Just see it as hardcore mode on a RPG game. You can find tents and vehicles to store stuff in, however these are on the server 24/7, so they can be looted by anyone who happens to find them, so make sure to hide them well. 2. Are you using any sort of third party chat system such as teamspeak or skype? I know some of these programs or windows itself will turn down game volume when they're open unless you change the options. That's all I can think of beyond a full re-install if you get sound out of Arma II. 3. What channel are you typing in? (i.e. what color is the text?) You need to be in side channel for the whole server to see it (teal text), direct is local area ~80 (white text), vehicle is for anyone in your current vehicle (yellow text) and I believe group is just for lobbies as far as DayZ goes (tan text). Make sure you're in the right channel, and never use your mic over side chat, you will get yelled at and probably kicked/banned from the server. 4. Just wait until you get into real servers where you start with nothing and you'll have guns pointed at you.

Best and Worst Spots to Abort/Log-Out

I wouldn't say Green Mountain is a big "PvP hotspot" but yeah, people do sometimes pop up in the weirdest places. Awhile back I basically lived in Cherno for a few days straight. 30+ player servers, always logged in the bathroom of the pub next to the Church. Pubs can't be blown up by satchel charges as far as I know. :)

    Dirty Tricks

I've done it before pretty effective. Just remember, if you open gear with anything other than a primary out (rifle or melee) you will stand up.
  19. herrjon

Not a new player, but almost no PvP

I gave a real go at RP'ing on Lingor Island, a map I'm not familiar with, went pretty well, was writing a story out, then the server shut down.

    Some questions !D:

Might be the case, haven't relied on meat to heal for a long time now, I was just going off of what other people have reported and patch notes. But the point is, food gives you blood, so eat it if you're hurt.

Worth it to recruit for a group?

Well I had good luck with TMW, granted they are a much larger and more established group than your run of the mill "looking for a buddy" thread, but you won't know until you try.

    Some questions !D:

1- There's many methods, setting a waypoint, using your iron-sights and practicing in Armory, rangefinders. I belive DayZGuideZ on youtube has a guide for it. 2- Not sure about the current mechanic exactly, but I know for the next patch it said it will clear out and start a new cycle every 15 min there isn't a player near it. 3- Meat gives you varying amounts of blood, and doesn't happen immediately, it regens over time after eating. Alternatively, you can come to TMW for help #shamelessadvertizing 4- I could list all the spots, but when entering an area just get in the habit of scoping things out. See what would be good sniping locations and scan for snipers, see if there's anyone in town, etc. So long as you're concealed and not dying of hunger/thirst, don't feel rushed to get into town, wait for the right time. 5- No, and for good reason.

    PBX to Nowhere

I've once seen a PBX at Elektro powerplant. Had a laugh cause I could still hear the ocean near it, since it emits the sound regardless of location. Was tempted see if I could "sail" it out of there, but then I got a patient. Just curious though, were the zeds able to attack you while you were in it? Just wondering if they had added the boats to the list.

    Picking stuff up, opening doors

Do you know what the scroll menu is? It's used for a lot of misc. actions such as picking things up and opening doors, as well as switching weapons. It will pop up when your scroll your mouse wheel and will be different based on what your crosshair is pointed at. With the hatchet, you have to mouse over it until you see "take hatchet" in green text, then that option will be in your scroll menu, just pick it up and remove it from your toolbelt in your gear menu. As for doors, a lot of buildings in DayZ Mod Chenarus are not actually enterabled, so I would assume the doors you can't open are the ones for these buildings. An easy well to tell if it's enterable is if you can see inside through the windows. If you can't, just there for show and cover, no loot to be had. If you do find an enterable building with a closed door however, just mouse over it until you see two large green arrows pointing away from each other with a line in between. This is the open door action icon, once this pops up, you should have "open door" in your scroll menu. To close doors is the same thing, just the 2 arrows pointing at each other instead. Just know zeds can open doors with ease and sometimes just walk through them, so don't expect them to protect you like L4D2. Also just a note, nearly every enterable building by default will have open doors, so if you come upon one with a closed door, there may be another player inside, so proceed with caution.
