    ethics of first kill

I either avoid or approach in a friendly manner. I haven't killed anyone in SA, and from my years in the mod, I've only killed 1 in cold blood (which I regret), with the rest being where I had no other choice or I had a patients life on the line. In the first one, there wasn't much more you could've done, he clearly wanted to take advantage of you and KO you. You could've maybe shot his leg or tried to knock him out, but for both of those you're basically leaving them for dead anyways. For the 2nd, you had first sight so you made the voluntary choice to take a life. You can easily avoid them by seeking concealment, figuring out where they're moving and avoiding their line of sight. It's even easier in SA with the number of enterable buildings no one bothers checking. Beyond that I've approached heavily armed people like that before, just chat with them, build rapport, offer any assistance, and walk away unharmed. If they do see an opening and fire at me, I usually accept it or run, I'm not going to bait an engagement. But yeah, in terms of morality and all that, you're welcome to play however you like, but when you get into it, you do second guess yourself and think if it could've gone down another way, and think that they could have just been another survivor like yourself, trying to do their best to survive, and you just ended their life (play session). Food for thought for converted KOSers due to a bad experience. Think of that feeling of when you got killed by someone out of the blue, and realize that's the feeling you're imparting on others when you needlessly kill them because "they could be a future threat". Just play smarter not harder.

So if you had an M4 before the 0.45 patch

Still around like in the mod when they "removed" a gun. Still found thermals in a remote tents once every blue moon. They had to set the damage to 0 to get rid of the .50 cals. But yeah, AK will be the new semiautomatic on the DM zone soon enough.

My plea to remove military gear

Well looking at other things like utility, a bullet can save your life, batteries might, pens won't. (Just being devil's advocate now) But yeah, logically there would just be loads of gun with nothing to shoot out of them.

My plea to remove military gear

I've seen you throw out the "less rare than pens and batteries" a few times in this thread, and while I feel the ammo situation will be the inevitable fix for this, the analogy is a bit off. Ammo is highly consumable, i.e. you pull the trigger, there goes one/a few rounds. Batteries I know can last you a good hour or two at least of continued use, and pens while I haven't used them myself, I can assume you don't burn through them like candy. I'd say it'd be better to realize in some cases you find more ammo than food. (just bothered me, sorry) I'd say in term of the M4, limiting the magazines will be the balance factor more so than the ammo, as you can't use it without one, and reloading it with just one mag is a terrible experience.

My plea to remove military gear

I think it's fine as it is, especially in experimental. It's hardly up to Arma or DayZ mod standards, as the M4 is gun that favors fire rate at the sacrifice of stopping power and long range accuracy, so good for suppression but can be bested by others with equal skill. We're hardly at a point of super weapons of .50 cals, DMR, M14 AIM and the M240 or Mk 48 Mod 0 in DayZ mod. And there's no zomb-ease weapon like the M4A1 CCO SD. I don't see that happening with the direction things are going either, and how they're going to balance things. Military weapons and overall variety aren't bad with proper balancing. Each weapon has the pros and cons, and the higher tier weapons will still be more rare, with ammo and attachments rare as well. Coming from someone who played DayZ 2017 for awhile, both Chenarus and Namalsk, sticking to ONLY "civilian" or generally low grade weapons isn't a smart idea. There's no progression, variation, or specialization. You had a choice of Lee Enfield or Winchester, so one with slightly higher damage and the other with slightly higher fire rate, and using anything else was garbage. Made things stale and boring fast. And there wasn't really any "hardcore survival elements" to keep things interesting, which was the whole point of that mod. Just some food scarcity, lack of bandages on spawn, and some weird skins.
  6. Definitely worth checking out. People periodically go back to the mod while waiting for the next SA, and for the mod they finally released 1.8.1, and are working 1.8.2.

    Disabling the irony algorithm?

It wouldn't be DayZ without it. The trick is to have some pals and look for different things, and end up finding stuff for each other. No joke, was playing the mod, I was fixing up the Heuy, all I find is a bunch of wheels and fuel parts. My buddy was fixing up the Ural and was finding tons of glass. Loaded it all up into the Offroad and got it all fixed up.
  8. I took the question of "which is more of a clusterfuck" as which place is messier and unnecessary. Balota is a clusterfuck of unnecessary military loot in an already loot rich area. It was fine as it was before. In terms of NEAF, it's straight forward. Some military loot to keep you going, but clearly a risky area that any sniper would love to camp. In terms of PvP clusterfuck, it really doesn't matter the exact location, it's gonna be a mess wherever the bambies happen to watch up.

Removing spawns is making this game bad

While I'm with you on "random" inland spawns, some of your justification is a bit skewed. In reference to it being "numerically pointless" you have to look at the statistics a bit further. Now let's just say you wanted to spawn near NWAF. Near is the key as while it's difficult to get that exact one spot you want, near something can be a large area. I personally would be happy just in the NW quadrant. With that in mind we'll cut the map into its 4 quadrants, and say you have the same number of possible spawns in each (even though NW would probably have more given terrain) making the chance of spawning in one of them vs the other the same, or out of 100%, a 25% chance. So then you spawn it and you end up in the SE. Keeping in my NWAF is your primary goal, you can make the long run or suicide. If you suicide there, you have a 25% of ending up in about the same place and a 75% chance of being closer to your goal, 25% of which is where you wanted to be. Logic dictates suicide is a viable option in terms of getting you where you want the fasted. Then we'll say you spawn in SW or NE. It's not too bad of a run, but if you feel like suiciding, you only have a 25% chance of being further away than you are. 50% will put you in about the same distance, and you have a 25% of getting even closer. Still a viable option for those wanted to get there as quickly as possible if suicide can be quick. Point is the math doesn't support you. Now we could have different things put in place to prevent suicide for spawn placement or at least make it a pain to do, but look past that and think of why things are they way there are now. People don't hang out in Berezino/NEAF/Svelto just because it's uber awesome amazing. They hang out there because it's close and the loot is decent. They don't travel inland because in terms of loot there's nothing considerably better that is worth the trip. (I'm leaving PvPers and socialites out of this as they just go where the people go) We of course know this and have discussed it, and exclusive loot, vehicles, camps, yada yada. Now, what would happen if spawns were exclusively around NWAF or Zeleno? Would people put on their hiking shoes and head out to Berezino, NEAF, or Svelto on a regular basis? I say no, for the same reason mentioned above. The loot wouldn't be worth the trip. If you look at Zeleno and the nearby mil base specifically, it has the same amount of comparable loot in a smaller area than the NE coastline. The point is, hotspots are hotspots right now because they're close and the loot is the same. There won't be any "map flow" unless there's specialized loot in specific areas (like hospitals in the mod) or exclusively loot in one area (Certain mil loot in barracks in the mod). If you need an example of this, look at the release of SA. Even though everything was all new and awesome, 90% of the players stayed in Balota, Cherno, and Elektro, 9% ventured to NWAF, and the last 1% went to the ghost town of Berezino for funzies. Random spawns across the map wouldn't hurt much in the current state of the game, but I'm not sure if anything should be done now though. As I stated before spawns are they way they are now for testing purposes, and we don't know enough about future plans for loot mechanics and balance to decide the endgame spawn system.

Removing spawns is making this game bad

Easy fix would be death by player would not count as a reset. In fact if someone kills you, you spawn far away from them so there's no back and forth.

Removing spawns is making this game bad

I'll go get you some burn cream before the flaming begins. More on topic, the spawn shifting is for testing purposes I believe. People are spawning where the new towns primarily are so bugs can be found, as well as it's a loot rich environment so people can test the functionality of the items. There's also performance testing with a higher concentration of players in one area. I don't doubt that we'll move to more spread out spawns as we move along, but in this case the "excuse" of Alpha applies here. I believe some forget that we're testers before we are players.

    Surviving Day 1 in DayZ

So basically you have 3 "pools"; energy, water, and your stomach. Whenever you eat or drink, it gives you energy and water depending and also fills up your stomach. If your stomach is full and you consume more you vomit and all the fun stuff that goes along with that. Hydrated means you have plenty of water, energized means you have plenty of energy (food) and you'll see stuffed when your stomach is full. So say you go to a pond and spam drink until you're stuffed. Your stomach is now full but your energy is still low (dying of hunger) you find some food and eat it, but since you're full of water, you can't hold it in and vomit, usually dying soon after. Hopefully that makes sense. The game even now is pretty organic and make sense logically when you think about it. There's and devtracker you can give feedback in. I'll link it when I get to my computer, but you can find it by going to the root forum.

    Surviving Day 1 in DayZ

Those are just forum titles based on post count. Someone who's been playing awhile could have finally come to the forum and started posting. Once you post enough though, you get to set your own (like myself) or the highest preset is bean king at 500 posts. A few tips on my end, -Any sharp object can open cans for less than full amounts. If your starving obviously do it, but otherwise hold the cans in your inventory until either you find a can opener or your inventory is full. Otherwise, eat everything in site, your belly has plenty of energy storage. -DO NOT drink from a pump or lake until you're full. You can't eat and you'll die of hunger with pockets full of food. Most cans will have water content to get you hydrated on their own, so pumps and lakes are just there for late game to top you off or if you're dying of thirst. -In terms of food and drink, you're goal is to continue to eat/drink until you see a bright green "energized" status in your inventory screen as well as a "hydrated" status. At this point, you regenerate blood, then health, seeing healing and healthy respectively. This is the only way to regain health atm, and therefore the only way to survive in the long run. -Rice is great for energy. One bag will typically get you to fully energized. However it's a lot of food and also drains your water, so do not select "eat all" option, but find a water pump, take it in bites, and make sure you don't get full or thirsty. -If you're cool with using a 3rd party map, you can find the town you're in by finding a sign on one of the paved roads going into town. It'll have the Russian name of it which you can match up with the map online. Otherwise the in-game map you can use normal map reading skills, but keep in mind you may not have the piece of map of where you are. All I have for now based on your issues you've posted and what's been said already. Best of luck to you!

    Playing the good guy...

You're story is not about KoS not does it justify it. What happened was the two of you started out with a mutually beneficial relationship, but as you went along you either became more useful to him dead than alive or feared you'd feel that way about him soon enough. He saw an opportunity to end it for the better for him and took it. You can play the Hero of course, but typically the average player is going to be selfish, so if you want to interact with them, you have to make yourself useful to them as well as build trust. You also can't let your guard down and always be safe, without actively showing it. It' a tightrope to walk on, but just because some guy took an opportunity to kill you for you stuff doesn't mean you should KoS from here on out. You can't win them all, but the ones you do are worth it.
  18. Charcoal should fix it if it was just rotten food. When you take them you still have the sickness flag but go into the recovery stage. Sometimes the flags won't tick off, so you could be healthy and it won't leave until you get sick again. Are you still showing signs of sickness? Low blood, constantly needing water, status messages, etc?

Is this seriously the whole game?

    A) It's the Internet B) The DayZ fanbase in highly concentrated on the DayZ forum, so it looks like flaming when it's just a bunch of people giving the same information. C) People who say "anything negative" usually don't know what they're talking about and go apeshit about everything little thing as well and are never dissuaded. It's been a few years of this now and we're tired. Anyways, this thread it heading the way of most other threads, so I'm with Element on this one, it's derail time. Here's a puppy
  20. herrjon

Isn't "DayZ" quite possibly the dumbest name ever?

Well there's thousands of people dying on a beach and military loot lying around everywhere. And some mod servers added tanks, so there you go.

How to look and act like a hero ?

You're on to the right track with the clothing, but it could be better. Of course the KoS folks will shoot regardless, but others are subject to color psychology, meaning you want to stay away from reds and oranges as these are more of warning colors, and people seen green and black as threatening because you're trying to hide. You want to stick with blues as well as lighter colors like tan, beige, grey, and white, or even just light blue. If you have a female character you can get a pink hoodie by putting on a red hoodie. My recommendation on the clothing is to not be so dark and rich, go a bit lighter. Swap out that black assault vest with a khaki or olive one, and get blue or tan pants. Maybe find a different shirt as well, not such a rich blue, maybe a blue hoodie or something. I personally don't care for the UN helmet myself, but that's fine. I personally don't were any headgear at all or go functional with a head lamp. Oh yeah, and get rid of the gloves until it serves an functional purpose. In terms of what to do or how to act, I personally don't carry any weapons at all when interacting with randoms on the coast, but that's just me. I'd say keep the rifle shouldered as even holding it is considered hostile, but you can pistol whip in emergencies if need. If you run into someone, engage with your voice and disengage with your body, i.e. be friendly and light in your tone of voice while you seek cover and plan an potential exit route. Try to get folks to put away weapons and lower their hands, but don't demand it from them. Finally, find rice to hand out, and collect saline. You can go the blood route, but it becomes a mess with blood types and such unless you have a confirmed O- donor. Morphine is great to hand out as well, but will be less of a need once experimental goes live. Best of luck out there, and have fun!

Is this seriously the whole game?

Not necessarily, it all just depends. I mean, the trip from Cherno to NWAF only takes 30-45 minutes straight shot, probably about an hour from the usual spawn points. OP had seen some gameplay and maybe found a map so he had an idea of where to go (I mean, it's in the name) 6 hours is certainly reasonable to figure it out and get there. It could have even been a coincidence. I know when I started playing the mod just simply wandering around after my first 2 embarrassing deaths I ended up at Stary Sobor by accident, and then NWAF after that.
  23. herrjon

Is this seriously the whole game?

You know OP, I think even with the completed game, this may not be the game for you. All of that stuff is just fluff, but the core of DayZ (and the reason I love it) is already there. Yes you travel long distances for a gun or a can of beans, but it's the journey, not the destination. You need to be able to appreciate traveling and taking in the little things. It also servers to build tension to a situation. It's that feeling of fear when you take all that time to get somewhere and you hear a bullet whiz past your head, or see and more human like figure in the place you're going. You know if you mess this up all that time you spent traveling would be wasted. If you were in a gunfight every 5 minutes you'd be desensitized to it and when it happened at random it would be a bore, just like any other shooter. The point is the game is a slow build to big moments. Yes there are elements that can be fixed and more done to bring all of the focus away from the NE, but at its core, DayZ is a slow paced game. Even with vehicles, you would still be running around for hours finding parts and such to get it running, all to have it stolen by someone who was tailing you the whole time. Just no. We don't need some silly quest/achievement system put it place to make things "more fun". People just need to set their own goals and make plans for their survival, and their reward is getting what they worked for. Fix a car? Spend the next 3 hours doing this, your reward is a car. Go on an adventure? Pick a place you haven't been to, plan a route and go, the enjoyment is in the journey. Set up a camp? Collect supplies, make a base, protect said base. There will be plenty more but the things to do should be organic and make sense. No need to shoehorn in some run of the mill MMO system.
  24. We're definitely willing. I recommend you log out now if you haven't and head to our teamspeak server ts.tmwdayz.com and find a medic.

    The best worst game ever!!!!!!!!!

First of all, you should read the forum rules. You are referring to the Standalone title whereas not on is this thread in DayZ Mod discussion, but the OP is referring to DayZ Mod, a mod of Arma II: CO. Also the post prior to yours was made over a year and a 1/2 ago, so you necroed this thread as well. In response to your post, although you should honestly move your frustrations to a more appropriate area, but SA is clearly labeled as early access, there's a large disclaimer on the steam page for it saying it is not finished and saying not to buy it, as well as heaps of information on the status on the game that is hard not to hear about if you're not living under a rock. If you really are a "developer" I should hope you would make more informed decisions on your purchases, and if not, you've learned something. See you in the beta.
