Well I think this thread has degraded enough. The OP has his answer so let's just stop the discussion and let the thread die. Feel free to close the thread mods to avoid a flaming argument.

I'd take a bit of a chill pill give things a fair shot. Your thread hasn't been open for more than an hour, on the off time, the replies will come. I don't know of any decent ways of playing the latest DayZ patch for sure on your own short of renting a private server, which I assume you'd want to avoid. But honestly, there's plenty of empty server to near empty servers you can join and learn the mechanics on if that what you're looking for. You can also take the advice of my good friend Se7eN and apply for our training course, or simply play on our servers. Whatever you do, don't take those side-chat d-bags to heart and let them represent the whole community. They exists in all games, it's just part of online play. I don't frequent the servers that advertise "noob friendly" but from what I have seen is those people are drawn to those servers because they know it's easy to troll and grief new players. Yes there is a bit of a high concentration of "bandits", but by no means are there side-chat griefers on every server. Edit: Point proven, Tr1x may hav your answer.

I Don't know the actual size of the two main island, but I highly doubt that. Chenarus 225 square kilometers of pure, interesting land. about 60-70% of your "twice as big" map (just eyeballing it here) is just ocean; plain old, boring ocean. The actual landmasses aren't very big to begin with, and with the abundance of vehicles, the presence of a divided highway around both islands, and the lack of street debris, that size is made much smaller since you can easily get anywhere on the mainland in about 15-20 minutes at most. As for the main topic, I'm in the school of thought that they're trying to do so much, that they haven't focus on key aspects, and it just all ends up sub-par or just straight up bad. For instance, the humanity system, it's cool they have different skins and "levels", but the choices they've made on it are a bit silly. The skins aren't that great in my opinion, just different, and the fact that you gain humanity from killing bandits just turns it into a witch hunt, or as someone else said "red vs. blue" instead of being an actual hero. And I haven't gotten as far as building an actual house, but from what I've heard of it, I don't like how they handled the concept; magic storage boxes that can't be looted by others, but that's been beat to death in this thread already. Long story short, Origins didn't refine their simple concepts and build up from it, so they're trying to do too much to please everyone, but it's bad at the core, in my opinion. I like vanilla DayZ because it's simple and well thought out. I like the danger of people finding my base and having to hide it and guard instead of "it's mine, you can't touch!". I feel more immersed and scared to die than I do in Origins, even without a house. DayZ does DayZ best, Origins is a whole different animal now.

One does not simply run DayZ "smoothly"
-
lol I just remember I saw that ATV when I was healing you the other night. It was probably broken anyways, but no biggie. But finding vehicles will just take time and experience. They DayZ DB map isn't exactly accurate with vehicle spawns, so you need to look around the area, up to 100m or so. For instance, the bike spawn on Cap Golova is right next to the lighthouse, yet the db map pictures it about 50m North of the lighthouse, and the boat is pictures on land. Just stick with it and you'll find one eventually. Best of luck!

I'm with Sula, I'm not seeing the $12 price point you're talking about. A link of where you're looking would be helpful. I see $12.90 for just Arma II, but you'll need Operation Arrowhead as well, which is $19.90. They offer Combined Operations for $24.90, which is really only 9 cents less than the $24.99 steam charges for Combined Operations. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to bother setting up another account on a website and entering all my credit card info, just to save 9 cents.

Zombies- make them harder or nerf them?
herrjon replied to sanchez1jose's topic in New Player Discussion
I think you'd have a split in the community, some will want the game harder to survive in to match the initial appeal the game had. Others are in it for the PvP elements, and find any buffs to zombies and decrease in loot a bad thing, as it hinders them in what they want to do. I personally am for a harder game, as that what I look for in games, and it's what drew me to DayZ. So long as it's reasonable and you can come out of zombie aggro alive if you have the skill and know-how. Zombies should be hard because they're zombies and their existence means the end of mankind, but they shouldn't be hard for the sake of being hard. -
You shouldn't have to run CO so long as you can launch both Arma II and OA. It should just download those files automatically, that's how it works. Have you tried to enter a server after you validated, ran the games, and downloaded DayZ and your Arma II beta patch?

Are you trying to join 1.7.7 servers? There's a new patch out 1.7.7.1, so that may be your problem.

Need Medical Assistance in the Mod? Find a medic here!
herrjon replied to Dr Wasteland MD's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
He's been helped. Ended up having to just have him die and run his stuff to him. Got a bit crazy because there were 60+ people on the server, he died a few times on the coast, but we got it done. Thanks for you patience Elmu, it was a pleasure doing business with you. -
Can we try spawning in the north?
herrjon replied to jubeidok's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, it's a bit of a glitch spawn, you spawn inside the red brick house, I've only had it happen to me once though. -

What about the Novy Sobor spawn? That's northish. -
Well a fireplace you can set anywhere, as they disappear when you log out. Usually though it's best to do in a forest as you have to go out there for wood anyways, and it's safer out there.

Have a heart Seven. That's not too far from common spawns, I'll go in tonight and see if I can scavenge up an box of antibiotics and a bloodbag and I'll try to take care of you. I'm available all day tomorrow, so just PM me when you'll be on, and we'll see what we can do. Worst comes to worst, I can kill you and run your gear to you. -
Glad to hear Joe helped you out a bit. Sorry for the motorcycle incident btw, I swear I thought you were still on Dobryy. lol Anyways, yeah, it'll be rough, but in a little while when you're a DayZ pro, you'll miss this feeling of fear and frustration with zombies, and not knowing how to survive. If you need a nice public server to play on though, we have updated finally, US2419. And you're always welcome on the teamspeak.
-
Just don't give up. You'll get the hang of it. This patch in particular is beastly, it even threw the pros for a loop, but we all adjust and survive, and you will too. Just know, when you do have aggro, as long as you keep moving and don't run directly at a zombie, you won't die from them. There are private servers that do start you out with a weapon on spawn, varying from hatchets and crossbows to sniper rifles and machine guns, and while they can be fun, I don't think they represent the true DayZ experience. It's up to you if you want to seek them out, but know that you'll be a better survivor if you can do it with nothing.
-
I assume you mean the axes wedged in the stumps? Yes, those are "furniture" and you can't pick them up, but there are hatchets that will spawn in barns and industrial buildings. This is the best weapon in the game at he moment in my opinion, at least in the respect of how easy it is to find one compared to anything else useful against zombies. So as soon as you spawn, head for either the docks of the coastal towns or for any visible barns. If it spawned a hatchet, you'll find it lying on the ground flat. In order to pick it up you have to look at directly and scroll your mouse wheel, and click on "take hatchet". Remove it from your toolbelt in the gear menu and you're ready to kill some zombies. If you don't find one and have a zed on your tail, just run around corners, through 2 entrance buildings, up steep hills, and through pine trees and bushes. They'll let up eventually.
-
Yep, you have to run Arma II and Arma II: OA to menu screen before DayZ will work. I do have to disagree with your feelings about DayZ Commander being "useless" beyond the downloads though. It allows you to easily browse and filter servers based on settings important to DayZ, easily shows which servers are public and private, lets you favorite fairly painlessly, automatically launch the mod you want based on the server, and just overall looks nicer than the in-game interface, at least for me.

I believe there should be some sort of Classification
herrjon replied to Jasmer's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes you are correct that those are the definitions of those words and they are different survival styles, however in DayZ, the community has more or less decided that bandit = killer. Just as bambi = new player and Hero = medic, it's a social definition that isn't entirely true to the dictionary definition. Most call the robbers highwaymen and whatnot, but no, there is no in-game visual cue to tell people "Oh, he's just a robber, he won't kill us if we comply." I'm wondering though, how would that be implemented? You will have to kill some of your targets eventually, how would you have the game differentiate that from KoS playstyle? If you based it off of taking things out of people's backpacks or tents, what about groups that play together, people that meet up and team up, or traders? Would they fall victim to the "robber" label? When it's all said and done, it's not in the game, and probably won't be. In Standalone, there will be no humanity based skins, so the worst you'd have to do is was the blood off your hands from the last unsuccessful hold up. I commend you for mixing things up and actually holding people up to interact with them before you take their stuff. Just know that there are people like me out there who won't immediately battle log or turn around and shoot right away. I wait for an opening ;) -
I don't. I've only killed one person who hadn't shot at me and posed a serious threat, and I still regret that kill. You can definitely play friendly, but that doesn't mean stupid. Stay in cover when interacting with people, keep your distance, offer them help to get things started, and if you have doubts, leave the situation as quickly as possible.
-
Well I can recommend TMW's servers. We have a private server that primarily vanilla, and a public server, US2419. The public server hasn't been updated yet thanks to Vilayer, but the private server is updated for sure. If you stop by our teamspeak server, ts.dayzmedics.com, there are typically plenty of friendly people willing to help a newbie out, either with questions or just playing with you.
-
It seems you've met the new zombies. They can push you to the ground if they get a hit on you. You're doing exactly what you should, just need to do it a bit better. You lose zeds by breaking line of sight, either with sharp corners, trees, buildings with 2 openings, steep hills, or as you have found out, crossing bodies of water. Keep it up, you'll get the hang of it. Just know you came in on a particularly difficult patch.
-
What money back. If you're lucky enough to catch it while it's up, you're in and you can play. If not, you haven't spent a dime. I can't be bothered to sift through all of the dev's posts, but I know I've heard it in interviews and such. This is a very common tactic for MMO's while they're still in development. When the game is finished then yes, it will be full public release where anyone and everyone can get it, but for the initial alpha, they have to slowly let out the flood gates. Would you rather you have to apply for a copy and wait for acceptance, because they could do that instead.
-
I assume you mean the release tactic? It's so the servers don't immediately get overloaded, and to increasingly test the new server-side structure. There have been plenty of alpha/betas that immediately crash the first few days of public release because the servers aren't set up to handle it. With the amount of build up standalone has had, it'd be no surprise this is the route they take.
-
Yeah, and even if it did release next week, from what I hear it will be a limited release. It'll pop up on steam, they'll sell a few hundreds copies, and take it down, then repeat. Best to just get Arma II CO to play the mod now. I know you already did, just being captain hindsight.
