I recommend public vanilla hive. TMW has two such servers, EU2419 and US 1503. As far as playing with people, feel free to hang out on our teamspeak ts.tmwdayz.com and find people there.

The Trusted Mentors are here to help!
herrjon replied to TMWMarijke's topic in New Player Discussion
Hello, TMW Head-Mentor here. I realize it can be a bit annoying to register on a forum, just after registering on here, but it does really help out the mentor team. It allows us to keep things organized and quickly process people, as well as ensure no request is forgotten. We appreciate your understanding. If anyone has any questions or comments about the mentor program or you just have general DayZ questions or tips, do not hesitate to message me either here or on the TMW forums. Otherwise you can come to our teamspeak server ts.tmwdayz.com and find a trusted mentor (green badge with the graduate cap). We'll be glad to lend you a hand. -
You need to have the latest dayz patch and Arma II beta patch downloaded. That and refresh all servers.
-
Ah, it's this guy again. *cooks up some popcorn* Yeah it's a buggy mod, but what mods aren't. Just learn the bugs and how to deal with them.
-
I think I may just have to save this screeny

On the forums? They're basically just likes

If you died to a bandit that means you did something that put yourself in danger and/or you didn't have the PvP skill to react accordingly. You can learn from every mistake, no exceptions.
-
Mercules pretty much covers it. Just don't bite off more than you can chew, no matter how tempting Cherno, Elektro, Starry and NWAF sound. With how spawns work, you can find food and drink litterally everywhere. Learn the importance of recon. Find a good view of where you want to loot, plan out where you want to go, how you'll get therea, and plan an exfil. Finally, learn from your mistakes. If you died to a horde gone south, figure out what led to that and how it could've been avoided or dealt with. Your deaths are your best lessons.

Welcome OldHorse, hope your surivial is going well. You will find yourself dying a lot and not knowing where you are or what's going on, but that's one of the best feelings about DayZ, trust me. I won't ruin the experience with any major tips or metagaming, just follow your instincts and learn from your mistakes. Vanilla is a good way to go about it, as some of the private servers and other mods can get a bit silly and go away from how DayZ was intended, but to each their own. If you need a good public hive server TMW has 2, EU2419 and US 1503. And if you find yourself in need of medical attention, just come out our teamspeak server(ts.tmwdayz.com) and find a medic. (shameless advertising over)

Welcome to DayZ. The blur typically happens when your 3D resolution and screen resolution don't match, so check those. Apart from that I'm not sure, so if that doesn't do the trick, just play with the settings. As for performance, Arma/DayZ is more CPU intensive than graphics card intensive, so yes, you may have to lower the settings. Just don't go down to low as this could be worse.

Probably not vanilla, as most people playing vanilla now are the survival sim-nuts. I'm sure Epoch and DayZero will still be plenty popular, and the other maps may still be played.

Just because of bandit skin, someone's bad?
herrjon replied to WhosHunted's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
They will be removed from standalone afaik -
Yeah, what sausage king said. Also, make sure you run BOTH arma II and arma II OA to the title screen.
-
Can you run the game by any other means?
-
It just takes time to learn how to move about the zeds while still staying in cover. You gotta stick close to walls and stay out of open areas, and when you have aggro go around as many corners as possible. You also have to figure out where players will typically be and where snipers can see, and stay out of those locations as much as possible or just don't linger. It is possible to stealth, even on high-pop, just takes practice, and lots of corpses. Also, living in the forest isn't boring, just different. It can be plenty challenging, especially if you don't do the initial coastal loot run and just dart right for the forest. I find it plenty more interesting than making the same old run through the cities or NWAF. I haven't had too many problems with Epoch zombies, and Origins are a different kind of hard, and they balance it out with far less of them (3 minutes in a town before I even see one). As far as Lingor and whatnot, those are just running an older version of vanilla, maybe even pre 1.7.7.1, not sure but vanilla zombies and their spawn mechanics have gotten a buff in recent patches, and the other maps are typically a couple vanilla patches behind either by choice or just time to modify it for that map.

Exactly this. There's a reason why the game puts your nav tools over the map screen. I'm always suprised to find out how many people don't know there's more to a compass than just the cardinal directions, and how to use the degrees to navigate or call out locations of things. Honestly, the compass is one of the best tools in the game. I would say though, most important of all is finding yourself on the map. Use landmarks such as buildings, roads, powerlines, lakes, hills/mountains, and even the more subtle things like the shapes of the land and treeline locations. This is pretty easy while still on the coast as it severely narrows down where you could be, then just keep a sense of direction and contantly double check this with landmarks as you move along. Thankfully when you log in, you get a pretty good idea of where you are, unless it's "wilderness", in which case HAVE FUN!

Just because of bandit skin, someone's bad?
herrjon replied to WhosHunted's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I do agree that skin means ultimately nothing, going back to my experience of being shot by a Hero (whilst being a Hero myself) and being helped by a bandit. However, the flipside holds true. Just because you were nice to someone and gave them gear, that doesn't mean they aren't free to shoot you in the back. Players are allow to do what they see fit, following morals and rules only they set for themselves. This is why I get excitement out of how I play. Most people are very grateful you run into danger to heal them, a stranger, some even offer to give me things as "payment", but that doesn't stop them from shooting me because they like my gun or backpack, or mentioned I have NVG's, or even just to try to piss me off and have a laugh. Every engagement is filled with tension and danger, moreso than a KoS playstyle sometimes. The point is, regardless of how you decide to play, you have to assume any and every player is going to take a shot at you any chance they get. It's a cynical veiwpoint at best, but it's what has helped me survive. -
prominentalex, I realize that's just your copy pasta advertizement post, but you do know what spoilers are, right?

Need Medical Assistance on a Private Hive? Find a Medic Here!
herrjon posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
TMW Now Healing on Private Servers This is a new medical assistance thread specifically for the use of aiding patients on private servers. If you are looking for public hive assistance, please go here Disclaimer: It is TMW policy that we will not heal anyone on battleye disabled servers, whitelisted servers with a lengthy whitelisting process (not instant), Rmod servers, or any server/mod that can not be found and launched via Dayz Commander. We apologize for this inconvenience, but these policies are put in place for the safety of our medics and to limit any additional wait time. It is suggested you turn to the community of your server for aid. How to get help: 1. Reply to this thread using the format given. DO NOT put the name or IP of your server in your public post. 2. Go to our forum and create a new thread in the "Request Help Here" forum. Be sure to add (Private hive) to the end of your title. In either case, a medic will publicly reply to your post and send you a PM to get in contact with you and get the server name/IP from you. Depending on the situation they will either heal you soon, or may have to schedule a time to meet up after the medic has prepped. 3. Go to our teamspeak server: ts.tmwdayz.com and get in direct contact with a medic. Things to keep in mind: As it is a private server, chances are your medic will not have a character on your server. Because of this, you may not be healed the same day as your request. It will depend on where you need help, the server's starting gear, and the prevalence of drivable vehicles. Please be patient with your medic and his/her team as they do their best to heal you as soon as physically possible. The are a handful of servers a number of medics will be setup on. These servers are as follows: BMRF Also, depending on the mod, your medic may not be able to find the necessary supplies to heal you in a timely manner. If this is the case, your medic will contact you to talk about possible options. Not all medics are willing or able to do these missions, so please be understanding if a medic cannot help you. They will do their best to find you a medic who can. What you can do to limit waiting time: If you anticipate needing assistance in the future, it will be a great help if you can manage to save space in your bag for at least 1 blood bag and 1 epi-pen. This can eliminate or alleviate any looting time your medic will have to do in order to assist you. Also, if you are able, move to a safe location with an easy landmark. The closer you can get to the spawning areas will limit travel time, and getting away from "hot spots" will limit the likelihood of your medic dying to an outside force before reaching you. However, DO NOT log back in or move if you are in a "hot spot" during a busy time (15+ players), have low enough blood to pass out (below 3000 blood or no more green in your blood drop), or any other debilitating medical situation, such as broken bone or unconscious. -

We are ready and raring to go folks, just give us a call and we'll be on our way. -
That's just a difference in semantics, which has been discussed at length in other threads. Yes the definition of "bandit" is as you said, but a "DayZ bandit" as is it commonly refered to, is the KoS/muderer person. Whatever you want to call it, the OP was camping with a sniper rifle and killing, being a "DayZ bandit" as I would say, or whatever term you like to use. And yet he's trying to deny that or justify it with bandit skin discrimination.
-
Skins don't mean anything really, I've been helped by a bandit and shot by a hero, all in the same engagement (whilst wearing a hero skin). Unless you witness them killing someone in cold blood, you don't know how they got that skin. So yes, finding a sniper rifle and popping down to Elektro to camp "for funzies" is banditry. There's nothing wrong with that, just don't try to deny it. More on topic I suppose, you do need to change positions constantly, and always keep your eyes and ears open to what's around you. Far too many people keep their eyes glued to their scope they have no clue what's happening around them, until it's too late. Try to be creative with your spots too. Everyone knows and expects there to be snipers on Dobbry hill 24/7, but as KoS pointed out, they didn't expect the lighthouse.

He asked for Vanilla DayZ, not Epoch. I'm sure they are fine servers and a fine mod, but it's not what the OP is looking for.

Looking for Clan / Group (Epoch or Vanilla)
herrjon replied to s_p_a_c_e_d_out's topic in Clan / Group Recruitment
I'd recommend Musty Gaming http://mustygaming.com/Forum/ great group of guys with an active Epoch server. Be warned though, you must have a minimum manly level of 85 to join.
