Suggestions to Lengthen the DayZ Play Experience
bazbake replied to PorkNBeans (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
The decision to treat DayZ as a persistent RPG experience instead of a roguelike is probably your problem there, mate. -
Heroes should get fuck all like the rest of the damn world.
bazbake replied to Outypoo's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
This is DayZ forum. If you close your eyes and wish hard enough, the standalone will be exactly how you want it. Trust me! -
You do realize that "playstyle" is just a term for "shit I like to do," right? Anything you can do within the mechanics of the game is technically fair play if you want to get down to brass tacks. However, I'm not sure where people got this idea that just because they can do something they should be able to without anyone having the right to criticize them. People whined about spawncampers in other games. People whined about bunnyhoppers in other games. People whined about snipers sitting in the woods motionless not playing the game eating cheetos behind the screen while their team did all of the work in other games. Funny thing about multiplayer games is that you have to take responsibility for your actions with regard to the other players. You are held to a certain regard when it comes to courtesy and decency. You're not "just playing a game" you're "playing a game with other people." So go ahead and do what you want, that's your right. Meanwhile, other people have the right to call you a coward, a reject, or a tool for the actions you have chosen to take. They can even make very vocal arguments about how you personally are ruining the game. And you know what, it's quite possible that you personally are the worst thing to ever happen to the game and gaming in general. You're participating in a group activity, it's quite possible that you are destroying the gaming experience of most of the people you come across just as assuredly as if you had taken a shit in a public pool. If you want to do whatever you want without anyone saying shit about you, buy a copy of Just Cause 2 and shoot some random people in the street. But as long as you remain connected to other players, you have to deal with them hassling and judging your actions and occasionally telling you that you are a total waste of space and you need to go somewhere else.

*sigh* Not this shit again. Go to options. Go to graphics. Turn headbob all the way down. Double tap "-", FOV is maxed out. Double tap it again, FOV goes to normal. Double tap "+" FOV is minimized. Double tap again. It goes away. By the way, your field of view in 3rd person is pretty much your field of view in first person. Except now you can tell if someone is sneaking up behind you. Walk up to wall. Tap Q or E. Peek around corner. Hold alt. Swing mouse around. Yay, free look! Cool? Cool. There are three people who must rely on 3rd person. People who are paralyzed at the thought of turning corners. People who get motion sickness. People who can't see over grass. The first guy's a coward, the third guy can fix it, and the third guy is out of luck. However, in Metal Gear Solid 2 back in 2001, Kojima already solved this problem with the peek action. By using the right and left corner peak at the same time, you could lift yourself several inches off the ground. And for more than a decade, other game developers have been living in the stone ages completely ignoring it. Seriously, do game developers just not like good ideas when it comes to game controls? Is the only thing they borrow bullet time or what?

Zombie games without decent melee are like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches without the peanut butter and jelly. And the rapport of guns is too small as it is, and every gamer and developer knows that the mechanics you choose to focus on makes the game you choose to let people play. I swear, if guns were as loud as they were in real life, Cherno on an average server would sound like the Fourth of July.
-
No. So make it easier for people who play the game the easiest way and at the expense of other players to continue to play the game the easiest way by improving their capabilities against other players? No.

I wonder how we got from "I don't want trains in my game" to "let's make everyone learn skills to do stuff!" On second thought, perhaps I shouldn't ask these questions.

Make it Darker, Colder and more Russianesque

Make it Darker, Colder and more Russianesque
bazbake replied to Nedmonds's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Driving trains is just too complicated. Besides, they only get 100 miles to the gallon. Now flying a helicopter. That's a lot more practical. -
DayZ players should have the courtesy to play Arma2 at least once or twice.
bazbake replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
First time I played Arma 2, my first response wasn't "Wow, this is hard." It was, "Huh, this game has potential if it could work out the gun mechanics and the enemy AI." Then I realized it came out in 2009. So...fuck that. -
Most people in this game are cowards and opportunists. Some of us aren't. I don't even shoot bandits unless they shoot at me first and I haven't been killed by anything but hackers in a couple months.

Duping gone please, ruining the game.
bazbake replied to JimmyMeatsock's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Um. You realize this is a multiplayer game, right? -
That's a really low humanity. Guess you'll never get to kill anyone ever again. Ah, and, WORKING AS INTENDED!!!!!
-
Unless there's a DMZ filled with mines and fences and guards with guns shooting the infected. Right now there's no reason to stay in Chernarus in the first place, so if we rely too much on current game design and the map to dictate logic we'll get nowhere. Truth is, the map isn't going to be the map in the standalone, it'll be bigger. But it could also be walled off like Berlin or Jerusalem to keep people on one side.

Helicopter crashes, do they ruin the intensity?

Some of us don't play on recruit level difficulty. -
Hero skins have bullet proof vests?!

Grand Theft Auto, Mercenaries, True Crime: Streets of LA, Sleeping Dogs, Saboteur, Fallout, The Sims... -
If I got turned into a zombie, I would be a goldmine.

I actually really like this idea. It would stifle the whole endgame whining. An escape route that you can play in time-attack mode would be pretty cool. Start the player off with an infection and force them to make a rush to the exit as fast as possible, any way possible, using all of the survival skills they have. Some players see this game as World of Warcraft, where you collect loot and gear and then PVP against people while "leveling up" or some shit. I prefer to view the game as a sort of a friendly-fire TF2 sandbox where the fun isn't leveling up and getting to the end, it's just joining up with the game and playing it. That said, I think adding game modes to player spawns that don't provide any bonuses but give players different pre-loaded end-games if they choose would be interesting. I could see the escape endgame. You start out infected and have to escape the quarantine before your blood runs out. If you go without food or water too long or your temperature drops, your infection gets worse. Anti-biotics can keep your infection in check but can't cure you. You have to gather supplies necessary for an escape before you die.

We did a poll last week I think. About 60-70% of people on these forums have .50 caliber sniper rifles. It's not the drops that are the problem, it's the tents and storage that are the problem. If you decrease the loot drop, you'll just make people farm 5 times as long. And then they'll die and someone else who isn't farming will get their gun. And then the guy that just died will go back to his tent and get a new .50 caliber rifle. You have to understand, this game has attracted an entire loot farming/server-hopping element into the game economy straight out of World of Warcraft and the like whose sole purpose is hoarding gear. This also means they can combat permadeath by gearing heavily and then farming hard while they have the arms and supply levels to do so with minimal risk. On the off chance that they are killed, they usually have enough supplies in reserve to immediately gear back to full. And while we complain about tents being found, no one person can carry a tent worth of equipment, so it's not like there's a danger of losing all of their loot. They just become a gear farm for other players. As long as storage exists and there is nothing to limit the amount of spawned gear players can maintain on the server, as long as gear never goes away, the drop rate of loot won't really matter. The loot will still keep piling up and circulating around the servers.

Atari 2600! I used to rock the fuck out of some Crystal Castles when I was but a wee babe.

There are reasons to kill zombies. And sardines are fucking delicious.
-
Punching wouldn't be bad, as long as it does the same damage zombie punches do (which is not really all that much). Someone mentioned the obvious but no one else has since then. Buttstroking/pistol-whipping. You can kill someone with a well-aimed pistol-whip and butt-stroking was, at least at one point, taught in the Army combat manual. If I'm carrying a gun, I should be able to crack a skull with it.

killing bandits should earn you their negative humanity reversed
bazbake replied to LeYuno (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Being a bandit is easy. Being a hero is hard. The scores and points reflect this. -
Helicopter crashes, do they ruin the intensity?
bazbake replied to jdz (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm sorry, but knowing you can find high-value loot in NWAF and STARY seems like it's taking the adventure out of the game. It's just another raid dungeon. I found two chopper crashes in half an hour once, an AKM in one and a .50 cal sniper in another. I'd even found another chopper crash with my first SAW in it that same day. Since then I haven't seen a chopper crash with anything in it but a shit ton of ammo. And overall in three months of this game I've seen 6 chopper crashes. That's one chopper crash every two weeks. Step outside of yourself for a second and stop worrying about how well the game works for you. There are hundreds of thousands of other players on the servers and they have to play by the same rules. You got lucky, they won't, so please try not to break the game for them by taking away an unpredictable rare loot drop and forcing everyone to gangbang a 2000 square foot stretch of pavement. That shit's already making the game boring. You should be trying to spread the game out instead of force all gameplay into a first-person [insert Warcraft reference here] run like total amateur hour. -
@Rocket; Does it really have to be zombies?
bazbake replied to daedrick's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I actually found DayZ after a binge of Zombie games desperate for something to scratch that zombie survival itch. I'll probably move onto something better if it doesn't shape up. But if it manages to strike that perfect note of awesome, I'll be around for a long while. Unless they keep tents and vehicle storage. Then I'm out.
