Please use the Arma 3 Engine for the Standalone
bazbake replied to black russian's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Just Cause 2. Previous versions were, but even America's Army is used for training, so that's not exactly a testament to absolute fidelity. Heh. No. -
There should be no high grade weapons in standalone
bazbake replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Typical Zombie horror situation: Sloan "Who's been stealing all our food!" Heidecker "You're paranoid." Sloan [Draws .45.] "I know it was you, Heidecker." Heidecker "No! What are you going to do with that!" Sloan fires. Heidecker "Nooo!" Sloan fires again. Heidecker "Nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!" Sloan fires again. And again. A couple more times. Heidecker "NOOOOOO!!!!! Sloan fires again and again. Heidecker "Noooo..." Sloan leaves him to bleed to death in the corner. Heidecker "Kafff...kaff...kaff. You bastard..." (This game really captures the tension of the Zombie Apocalypse.) -
"I wouldn't play this game unless it was Arma II with zombies." ... Noted. Interestingly enough, people keep doing polls on the forums and they keep showing two things. 1. 70% of players own a .50 caliber sniper rifle. 2. More than 80% of players would be fine if we threw out vehicle storage and tents and everyone started over from scratch when they died. So it's interesting to see what habits players end up falling into that they wouldn't otherwise engage in based on how a small segment of players have skewed the game. Namely, the high-level use of military weapons seems to be driven by this arms race for domination which is supported by persistent storage. But most players (on the forums at least) don't really want to play the game this way but they have to because of players like Hyp3r.

Snipers are everywhere and NO WHERE
bazbake replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
SERPENTINE! No, seriously, that shit works 99% of the time because DayZ snipers can't snipe for shit and all of the people who can actually aim are using assault rifles so you'll see them coming. -
This game's not realistic or a simulation or a sandbox game. It's a mod of a what was designed 2 years ago as the basis for someone else to use simple scripting to make an actual simulation. RDH added complex hunger/thirst mechanics and zombie AI to make a survival horror simulation. Then he removed most of the encumrbance limits to encourage high levels of military style PVP. Furthermore, if you've played an actual sandbox game, you'd realize that sandbox games are first and foremost built on fully-realized worlds. DayZ is static and empty with designated zones for hostile NPCs. In short, it's too unrealistic to be realistic and there's no sand in the sandbox. Another description would be that DayZ is a "box" game where you run around trapped with other people poking at the sides and each other until you get bored or they get more interesting. But it's still early. Maybe the sand they add will be really awesome.
-
The first comment was that people were stealing from him. The second was that it was unrealistic. Just pointing out that people only seem to care about realism when it helps make the game easier for them.

this game is revolutionary - however, a suggestion (maybe temp fix for arma2 alpha mod as opposed to standalone)

You can already stash more than 20 deaths worth of top-tier gear in this game and now you want to remove any gear being lost at all? No offense, but the day someone discovered a way to cheat permadeath is the day this game got ridiculous. -
What he said. We had an entire multi-page thread on this last week, your contributions to which, OP, would be very much appreciated.

Bacon bacon bacon bacon where!?

"We should change the game mechanics in this survival horror game. If this were real, I would never hide my equipment in a tent." "If this were real, would you wash up on the coast every time you died with knowledge of a hidden equipment stash?" "What are you, crazy? That's in the game mechanics!"
-
What RPG puts your loot in a huge pile on the floor? That doesn't make any se-- Oh, right, Diablo.
-
People are going to cheat no matter what you do. I personally enjoyed those early days not knowing what was on the map. Of course, yeah, people are going to rush to get around the game mechanics.
-
Sometimes ideas in other games are just really, really good ideas. In Eastern European Chernarus, Riot Shields would be EVERYWHERE. How else to put down the volatile proletariat revolutionaries?
-
Spawn on coast. Get shot by spawncamper. Wait 1 hour to respawn. Yeah, that'll stop trolls.

examin corpse to determine time and cause of death.

Dude flies a helicopter and reloads a M107: "What, it's a survival game?" Dude checks a body to see if it's still warm or smells bad: "Psh. What, like he's a pathologist?" -

Some things that ruin the realism of DayZ.
bazbake replied to TagMor's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
@Just A Goat By huge guns, I don't think they mean a 3-foot assault rifle that weighs 6 pounds, I think they mean a 5-foot anti-materiel rifle that weighs 30 pounds. -
make the blooddrop go empty in addition to changing colors
bazbake replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Telling you exactly how much blood you have is good for Diablo and other min/maxing metagaming free for alls, but I don't think it's ideal in a survival simulator. That said, the current readouts are a nightmare for the colorblind, so draining/filling gauges is a must for standalone. -
Why I play as a bandit and some analysis
bazbake replied to svefngenglar's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
A simpler way to do this would be to remove tents and vehicle storage and then balance character performance based on their loadout. A lightly-encumbered character could run faster but they would have less firepower, food, and ammo. A heavily-encumbered character drags ass and can't run as far but they could carry heavier weapons and more equipment. Teams would have advantages in that they could pick and choose which players carry what and then organize based on firepower and movement. You could have an overwatch heavy who moves slowly but can go unseen in ghillie camo, a mechanic who carries around parts and tools to repair things as well as a single canteen and can of food so he doesn't get completely slowed down, and a swift and fast medic with an assault rifle and medicine could dart from player to player swiftly providing healing. As it stands, everyone is a rogue on their way to glass cannon status. Unless they have camo or a ghillie suit or a hero outfit, in which case they're also a tank. Since gear determines your performance, just tie more of a character's performance to their gear and force them to choose their gear far more carefully instead of having an infinite supply to go back to. -
Too bad your solutions would just hit noobs with the nerfhammer. If you want the game to be more interesting, nerf the people at the top and buff the noobs.

Death and the destruction of gear
bazbake replied to ruggermike (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
A recent poll on these forums showed that about 70% of players owned .50 caliber rifles and 50% of players specifically owned AS50's. So...too late. -
At the risk of sounding like a dick...we've already discussed this before. Lots of times. I'll repeat what I contributed before: Based on dying from starvation from full health taking 90 minutes and dying from blood loss IRL after 4 pints of blood, then one pint of blood IRL equates to 3,000 blood in-game and a player should regenerate 3,000 blood/hour. Or .83 blood/second. Green hunger = full regeneration, yellow = half, red = no regeneration, black = starvation. Green thirst = full regeneration, red = no regeneration, black = dying of thirst. Remove all food regeneration. Since blood packs are 1 unit of blood, or 1 pint, then they should give you an instant 3,000 blood however they are used. I'd even make it so blood packs can be used on yourself, which would increase demand and force players to fight for resources more while limiting the ability to shrug off battle wounds as currently done. By decreasing the healing of blood packs while allowing more players to use them, demand would go up and fights would be more brutal.

Some things that ruin the realism of DayZ.

One unit of blood saving me from death. A steak allowing me to recover from a 9mm bullet hole. Gun damage in general. Seriously, what the fuck? Being stopped by a two-foot-high ledge. A door breaking my legs. Breaking both legs jumping off an eight foot ledge. Putting a 30 pound rifle in my backpack. No, scratch that, putting TWO 30 pound rifles in my backpack. Firing a 30 pound anti-materiel rifle unsupported and hitting anything more than five feet away. Scope drift returning me right back to my target. A 30 pound rifle being as hard to carry as a 6 pound shotgun. And easier to carry than a 14 pound rocket launcher. A 200 round case of 7.62mm ammo being as hard to carry as two 9mm magazines. A 30 round magazine of AKM ammo weighing as much as a cylinder of .45 ammo. Being unable to carry a flashlight and a weapon at the same time. Flares can burn at 1600 degrees...but you can't light a campfire with one. You starve to death in an hour and a half but you can't regenerate blood. My hunting knife can only cut dead animal flesh.- 59 replies

I believe you mean, "Rule number 1: Don't trust ghillie skins. Oh, whoops, I forgot that rule and put on a ghillie skin, my bad."
