I saw a lot of discussion several pages back (around the 18-21 page area) and just wanted to chime in. It seems like a lot of people are making suggestions for the zombies without really testing them out- that seems a little bit silly. As an experiment, I actually went and made my own mod. It's Vanilla DayZ, with only some minor script differences. Zombies -> In the version that I started modifying, 1.7.6.1, Zombies used a pure LoS check to determine if they should chase a player, once he had already been acquired as a target. What I found out is that these LoS checks include things like other zombies, the grass on the ground, bushes, windows, glass, and don't take into account distance. They could watch you go around a corner from two feet away and lose LoS. If that happens to be when the counter ( a variable that determines when the check takes place ) says so, they'll start Loitering instead of chasing you. SO. What I did, was essentially make it so that they will always chase you unless the terrain is in the way, or you're more than a distance of 500 away. What this did was make it so that the zombies almost never stopped chasing you. Lines of 50 or more zombies became fairly common if you were sighted. They were scary again- because it became maddeningly difficult to find anywhere safe. If you stopped, they'd maul you to death, since I increased the range on their attacks, the damage, and their accuracy. Oh, I suppose there's one more important thing. Nerf the Hatchet. It's a mean, cruel change, but one that's necessary. The hatchet being a one hit kill means that a single survivor can effortlessly and silently bottleneck hundreds of zombies and kill all of them without taking any damage. So, nerf it. Headshots are still a onehit kill though, so it makes combat more interesting. Anyway, I'd bet many people think they won't like these changes. I have only this to say: I've played it. I made a mod, played it with friends, and had fun in Vanilla DayZ for the first time in months.

Survival in DayZ isn't exactly hard, though... If it weren't for those darn bandits, the game wouldn't be interesting. I say good luck to your fledgling server, but that it may be in your best interest to make the zombies more of an actual challenge if you're going to be excluding one of the only interesting things about the game, instead of making the game a walk in the park. Let me know if you want to give it a shot then. I couldn't figure out how to get my server to list itself under the global server listing (or if I even could at all), so I'm using a Hamachi connection for my friends to be able to connect. -

Are you asking if this mod is to steal peoples cd-keys? If so, no. You're welcome to decompile the source code, as well as anyone else who wants to. I made this mod so that people could find DayZ challenging again- not so people could (nearly instantly) accuse me of something like that. -
I know a lot of people will tell new players to crawl around, be cautious, not get your sound indicators up... and man, do I wish that was how you had to play DayZ. It took awhile, but after about the 8th playthrough I realized that's the most inefficient way to play DayZ. Observe. Sorry it's so long, but that's DayZ for you... just skim, if you really want to. Improving other mechanics of the game that are broken can solve this without directly influencing players. More difficult zombies. Lower gun spawn chances. Better close range combat.

How much power do private server owners have over the game? I see many servers that have custom buildings, increased vehicles, and even more zombies on occasion. How possible is it for them to change, for example, how hard zombies hit, or how quickly they attack/run? IF this is possible, are there any servers that make zombies actually difficult? Thanks!

So I recently heard that Rocket is planning to include this... Is he nuts? Actually, what's the deal, here? People occasionally suggested this in the past, but all got ganged up on and denied. Besides that, they were called sick and trolls. Rightfully so, since this makes the game akin to the mind of a 4 year old. Many of my friends have said that they will probably just not get ShitZ. I'm inclined to agree. Rocket, Please reconsider. Thanks, Zetal

I was almost reassured up until the last sentence. Then I remembered why this allows the community to be even more childish and immature than they are already. It's worthless and empowers trolls.

They have said that support for the mod will still exist. Abandoning it would be quite the dick move.

I actually really like this idea. Right now the pathing is so horrid you can just run everywhere and lose the chasers on a bush when its convenient.. But this would make that almost impossible, I think. It should definitely be tried, at least.

@kebman These suggestions are meant to work with the DayZ Mod. Supposedly, they are going to continue development on the mod in addition to the Standalone. Many of what you suggest would only be possible with engine modifications. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the forum is already overflowing with those kinds of suggestions. I'd like something a little more short-term, I guess. I'd recommend you read the rest of the post after I say I beat it. The reasoning should be pretty obvious behind why I said that.

Hey guys, this topic is a bit old but I feel it still illustrates the same bloody issues that are in the game to this day. So I figured I'd just go ahead and leave a video recording me and a friend made to try and show comprehensively what the issues are. Hopefully it gets the point across. Many parts are VERY VERY boring, because it's DayZ and that's just how it is. Feel free to skip around/skim. We also had some video issues at many parts. Try to bear with us. Part 1: Part 2: I guess it partially doubles as a 'How-to' guide on playing DayZ lol We almost always find cars with little-to-no damage or deaths within a few hours. Thoughts? I really think this should make the issues quite clear.

This poll is such a silly farce. Anyone could know that 3DP would win. Its a crutch that many players are addicted to because they don't know any better. Turning headbob off solves the nausea. Alt-look solves situational awareness. There are no excuses except ignorance or abuse. Did I miss anything? -
